  • GE Transportation today took another important step forward in its partnership with Indian Railways when the first of 1,000 diesel-electric Evolution series locomotives arrived at India’s Mundra Port.
This will be the first ever diesel-electric locomotive running on Indian tracks which complies with the international standard on emissions known as UIC 1. The locomotive was designed at the John F Welch Technology Center in Bangalore.
It is the first of 40 locomotives that has been imported to India from the U.S. The remaining 960 will be built at GE’s Brilliant Factory, which is being constructed at Marhowra in Bihar, and will open in 2018. The Brilliant Factory marries lean principles with additive manufacturing and software analytics for the most efficient production. The partnership will also provide technical training and employment opportunities for the local community in Bihar.
The milestone is the result of a $2.5 billion agreement for 1,000 diesel-electric locomotives, signed in 2015 as part of the Government of India’s Public Private Partnership program to modernize the country’s rail infrastructure. This agreement remains one of the most promising infrastructure projects in the country and underscores the importance of the government’s 'Make in India' initiative.

The informations provided by the CEO are not fully correct. Yes, we still have some 1970 techs but also DLW rolls out EMD locos like WDP. Are WDPs 1970 technology? With 4500hp in WDP4B/D, they are more powerful than US SD70. He told here that these engines will be 4000hp. Then these certainly lag behind WDP4D which are presently in service. And these WDPs are very GE technology already. Other informations are also debatable. If they produce 900 more engines at Bihar, then what will DLW do? And that too in a scenario when the country is converting more n more nonelectrified tractions into electrified ones. Seems something fishy. This may the greatest blunder of Suresh Prabhu. Hwevr, nice intervw.

The 4000 HP General Motors diesel electric locomotives imported by Indian Railways were state of the art locomotives. They were of 1990's technology and were state of the art. They were equipped with a two stroke diesel engine, AC traction motors and high adhesion trucks. The GE representative stated that the technology of the imported GM locomotives was that of the 1970's. Nothing could be further from the truth. The gentleman was either speaking out of ignorance or was willfully misrepresenting facts.

Very nice interview by Mr. Tiwari. But why we aren't able to develop our technology to build more fuel efficient and powerful diesel locomotives? Indian Railway is one of the biggest employer of this country also the oldest than why we aren't able to develop one? My guess, there is lack of R&D facilities in Indian Railway. Institutions like IITs, NITs, IISc even other engineering colleges should tie up with Indian Railways to build efficient technology.

The GE CEO handled the questions very aptly.... The strategic importance of diesel locomotives is very much there... else a company like GE will not be invested in this business... Worldover, all railways maintain a mix of traction for obvious reasons... to meet strategic requirements and for contingency in the event of grid failure... as rightly pointed out by the CEO.... Those of you who are vying for fully electric traction are very amateurish... the government doesn't take a decision just like that....
