Honestly, my first thought would also be that it isn't a benefit to then knowing how their enemies feel and think but I guess in WH every race are crazy maniacs, except this peaceful aquatic lifeform so it all checks out

While that would be funny, spacemarines do have perfect memories recollection of things, they even remember how there previous live was before they become spacemarines and before the psychological indoctrination.
That being said a spacemarine forgetting were they put there helmet and be like (proceeds ti eat a chunk of his arm) is extremely meta. 😂

Well I'm curious. Flesh Tearers, Lamenters, can you recommend any good novels with these guys? And also, what's your favourite read from the 40K novels. Been playing tabletop since late 80's. But I'd really like to catch up on some of the lore. It's gotten so massive. Thankyou!!
@@dazofthemoo1531 I highly suggest picking up the Sons of Sanguinius book. It was where I was first introduced to the Chapter and other characters like Astorath the Grim and Gabriel Seth. It definitely shows the more hardcore side of 40K. Especially the Red Thirst they carry, they literally make an Inquistor go mad from experiencing it.

The fact the chapters who eat their own dead are able to retain that fallen brother's skills and experience is a large reason why they do this and make such a large ritual of it. (there also the red thirst for the blood drinkers and flesh tearers.)

Biology is terrifying
ENS is just the peripheral nervous system that extends into the digestive tract. It's not a 'brain' per say. What's important about it is the different receptors It's riddled with, which run automated processes for the brain like the release of gastric biles, amylase, and other digestive processes like peristalsis.
The Mortifactors chapter have integrated this ability into their belief system. They practice cannibalism on a regular basis and in a ritualistic manner. In Warriors of Ultramar the Chapter Master basically forces Uriel Ventris to drink his blood infront of other Ultramarines to give him a glimpse at his visions of the future. Codex Astartes my ass, gotta love Mortifactors for the balls.

I play a D&D character that consumes the blood and flesh of dead foes to gain their knowledge and energy, and I’ve only just now heard of (the first part) being a thing here. Very metal.
Make sure to wash the Tyranids first before eating them.

Some chapters, like the Dragon Spears, eat their dead simply to pass knowledge and experience to others, and that is arguably one of the more "wholesome" examples of this practice.
Also, sometimes the potency of the memories aquired varied depending on the chapter; like the Soul Drinkers, who got their name because they would also inherit some the subjects emotions associated with the memories, as if they also able to see into the subject's soul!!!

And also wouldn't it be a bit dispersed if somehow my memories, preferences, and habits are at different organs(it's also a bit gruesome to think for a bad habit being possible to be dissected away lol)? And also this doesn't explain synthetic transplant (synthetic body parts) and nerve severing, (how can we keep that information while it's severed?, the implication is that do we lost some memories and personalities when we have an organ failure or an organ is injured?)
Plus all claims must be subjected to intense objective repeatability lol (if it can be repeated a ton of time, and double blinded as well, if it is not then it is not really provable and everything might as well be true), there is a test for what is true or not

Corpse starch is specially treated and so thoroughly processed, it transmits nothing. It is utterly bland in every way.
In the novel "Eye of Terror" that practice was rather well described. When a Dark Angel, who just spent 10.000 years floating through space, finds out, that his "brother" (indeed a Fallen Angel) was lying about the past and what had happened during the Heresy, the Dark Angel rips off the other one's head, cracks the skull and munches his brain.
What happened next is described as fast-forwarding through ten millenia.
You forgot about the souldrinkers eat the chaos space marines gene seed. This can cause them to become blessed with chaotic gifts like bladed arms, bezerker rage, or a link to chaos so they can hunt it down. This often takes them over the edge to have to be killed by their chapter.

Mortarian does it to a Cultist leader who failed him and fled battle in the siege of Terra in “Garro: Knight in Grey”.
He wanted to see what the cultist was seeing when he fled an assault on a loyalist fortress which had an astartes present he mentions to Mortarian, so Mortarian pops his skull open with his bare hands and eats part of his brain. He witnesses the battle in a strange disjointed visual journey as he has “let it rot, let it rot, let it rot” whispered in his mind the entire time

It’s about eating brains. I haven’t seen any example of this from anything other than their victims brain or gene seed and that’s only some astartes. Not all have that ability developed enough. It’s also been not retconned but like less and less mentioned after horus heresy

Canonically any organ will do. The amount of flesh consumed is more important.

What about eating the various xenos? I'd assume a Tau or Aeldari brain would give viable results, but what about a Ork or even a (shudder) Tyranid? Could eating a Nid just be a bad idea, or even a very very bad idea?

Eating a Tyranid will kill you. There are so many microorganisms and hostile parts in a Tyranid that even thorough cooking and sterilization can't make them edible
