"Did you use a pattern or just a solid color for the toning?"
--Everything you see here is solid color: shades of gray. I created a different layer for each shade, some of them dark, some of them quite light. I almost never use Photoshop for patterns in the artwork but instead suggest them by hand in the line art-- just a personal preference of mine. ~Mark
I just love how timeless these videos are :D like I'm watching the series now and it really doesn't seem made in 2013. The advice is so good and can be used any time really . Thanks Mark!
Thank you Ana-Maria :)
+markcrilley ^_^
And still applicable in 2020! :-D
Thanks for noticing. As for why I decided to put it in that particular place, that I cannot explain! ^_^ ~Mark
I am rewatching these because I am planning on making my own comic book soon :)
This is the kind of video I was waiting for! It wasn't boring at all. This is the part that I struggle the most. It's computer coloring. Thank you for this video. I hope you will make some more comic coloring videos. There is still a lot that I feel that I need to learn in this particular area.
Please don't feel that way-- What I meant to say was that if people saw my actual real-time process of gray toning, how slow it is and how little happens from one minute to the next, *that* would be sleep-inducing. I'm sure your videos are great! ~Mark
I actually like these kind of videos because they can be applied to any art style, not just Manga. I realize Manga is your thing, but it's nice to change up every once in a while.
nice video...back from a long break...time to catch up with marks vids...
I would like to see how you put together panels, why you decide for certain layouts, what works for you in some panels and what not, and most importantly how do you put together a real page in a manga.
Mark, out of all your videos, while you may think it's boring, this has really given me some insight. Many thanks.
The panel would be similar to Sai, or Manga Studio(depending on your preference) in which there is a a section where you could add new layers, each numbered and can be renamed, on top of each other. The Layers have their own menus and sliders for various effects/variables/values/etc.
What I do, in Manga Studio, is have a folder of layers and separate them by opacity value of tone. So for everything that I want at, say, 40% tine darkness select that layer and start marking things up.
This was another great demo! Good lesson in balance of tones without losing focus on the action in the panel.
You did a really good job explaining your philosophy of which elements in the scene should receive what shading, but it would have also been helpful (for people who don't know) for you to touch briefly on the method of how you actually DO the shading. For example, setting up the blending mode on the initial sketch so you can shade "under" the lines, and drawing out the lasso selections you're about to shade. I think that would have been helpful for many! But maybe that was a conscious omission.
Personally, I've used Manga Studio 4, and it is a lot simpler to use than Photoshop. It also handles the notion of comic book pages being associated in to a project and also handles word bubbles. I draw on paper, scan then tone/letter in Manga Studio 4
Not sleep inducing at all! I'm a complete beginner and using your videos to inspire me to learn Gimp, so whatever details you show help me to pick search terms to find the right documentation or Gimp-related tutorial videos. Thanks to this step by step, I finally learned the path tool for making arbitrary polygonal selections, and applying the gradient over it using a second layer. I do like the compromise of the cooking-show-style presentation, pulling each subsequent layer "out of the oven" :)
Love your videos Mr. Crilley. Very informative, very inspirational. As long as you keep making them, I'll be here watching.
We have started studying Photoshop basic in Computer class at school, so this helped me out a lot more than you would think. Thanks for the video, time and tips. :D
You can actually use the eraser brush and set the brush opacity to something low (say 10% or 20%) and it will lighten up your grey, not fully erase it. Or use any brush set to white and use a low opacity.
Hey Mark the shading down the alley way really pushed that sign forward. I'm going to try and incorporate some of that shading technique to my next drawing and hopefully I can call (or not) attention to things.
you should do the scanning process like how big your paper should be, how big to draw a full page of panels on the paper, etc. :) great video's you are my inspiration to start my own manga
How's yah manga going?
I would actually like to see how you did the toning in photoshop. Did you use multiply on the layers or channel selection to create the toning as the background? Did you use a pattern or just a solid color for the toning?
When on the background layer, click and hold the lasso tool (Third from the top on his screen) and select "Polygon Lasso Tool". Then just click and surround the area you want the shading inside. If you want multiple areas like in the video, after you've made one area, hold the Shift key and keep going :)
you put the original lineart on multiply. (you can find it in the drop down menu on layers... you can find it.. I'm sure)
it makes it so you can put color (or greytone in this case) underneath the lineart
I can explain why it does that if you like...
Congratulations, Mark. You're an inspiration to me. I hope one day i can publish my comics too. Thank you!
Great video. I'd like to know a bit more on how you do some of the selections, particularly on one of the last layers when you go outside of the lines. Do you just use the free hand selector or use the oval with the 'add to selection' option?
Hey Mark! GUESS WHAT! :D I am getting your book: "Brody's Ghost", because I read the preview, love the art, and I wanted it so bad! I am going to get it soon! So excited! Especially by one of my most FAVORITE authors EVER!
I really enjoyed seeing how everything changed a little by little. I actually want to try doing this soon.
Also, can you do a video about how to draw trees/plants? Or have you done one already? I was looking through the how to draw playlist and didn't see it, but I might have looked over it by accident.
Please do a video on details, like how you think of all those little things that makes your work from great to awesome.
mark im very greatful to u... Because of u i trained my self for 2 years... Previously i drew worse than a kid... Now i draw hitsugaya just the way he is... Thax from deep within me ;)
It would be awesome if you would do a whole series of videos for Photoshop tips. This was great!
Mark Crilley, I have done dumb little comic doodles in class to make my friends think i was crazy. it worked, btw. But thanks to you, i have decided to make my doodles into a full functioning comic, and your tutorials have helped me make it look more professional. So i thank you for all you do on RUclips and in your book. I saw your book in an art store i went to and lacked the money to buy it. Next time though, i will buy it just so i get all of your tips at my fingertips. :P
I thought the "misting layer" was really interesting. From reading Brody's Ghost, I thought you just locked the opacity on the lineart layer and toned your lineart gray. But your method added some nice atmospheric perspective.
Good to know. I may have to make a switch and see how it stacks up.
You just crushed my soul. What you describe as sleep-inducing contents is basically 90% of my channel. *Silently sits in a corner* cries*
Mark, since you referenced the manual screen tone video, I was wondering if the program you used (or other programs) allow you to digitally add the special background screen tones that you showed us in the other video.
Hi Mark Crilley!
Thank you a lot for this video :-)
Which size of bristol paper do you use for inking? And which size of scanner ?
And also, do you use the "lasso" tool for isolating the areas that you want to tone?
Hello Mr.Crilley, how long do you need for this page? Of course, you are really fast in drawing (at least for me) but it would be very interesting how much time you need for such a page.
Thank you very much for all the helpful videos and please go on with that as long as you can :)
I think the misting layer on the InstaCup van makes it look like vinyl letters that show some weathering and fading over time.
cool! ever think about using computones? i always thought those looked better than just plain grey scale. easier to get good texture.
the layers description was good, but i wish you had zoomed out a bit to show the extra menus like the opacity bar you were talking about. not for me, because i've been using photoshop for years, but i think people who aren't familiar with computer programs to see what you're talking about and how to add new layers.
other than that, super cool tutorial!
Does the gradient become a halftone pattern through the printing process, then? So you don't actually need to do that yourself?
I´ve been waiting for this video for like 5 years. Thank you Mark!
I know when you scan in an image it's flat, so would you be able to show how you set it up in photoshop to get it to the point where you can do this?
You can use HyperCam it's legally free and you can select what part of the screen you want to record, and even record your voice all at once if you have a microphone.
Nice work!
i recomend u to use hypercam as the angle of camara may effect contrast and light from the screen
I found this video extremely informative! I have been working with grey tones for a while and never really got the effects i was going for now i see where i went wrong thanks Mark ^_^
Mark, I know you use Bristol for your comics, but is there any advantages to it? I use just regular copy paper and was wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to that.
I taught myself to draw comics on large Bristol 11 by 17 cause I saw that pro artists preferred it. Did not like it, recently switched to smaller Bristol around 8 by 11 and like the work much better. You said the panel was 6 inches wide, how big is the original sheet you use for the total page.
Hey there mark i am always a fan of yours and even my classmates watches your videos because when i see my classmates are interested in drawing i told them about you and were just 3rd year high school students here in the philippines
read miki falls at the Lansing library and was hooked...unfortunately they don't have book 2 :(
Not sure if you have one but could you do a video on how to fill up a picture with objects. I can draw the character and building but I have troubles with the details, I just have no idea what to do.
Very cool, I enjoyed watching this, although I was hoping that you would touch on some brick texture for the side of the building, although from the looks of it you were going for a concrete texture werent you?
cool tutorial mark, one question, is adding gray tones to more organic enviorments diiffererent?( like trees, hills, and whatnot)
I honestly think it could work after seeing Sycra's videos all these years. All you really need is a tablet of some sort then you can draw things naturally as if they were on paper. Plus they'd be easier to time lapse since they're already on the computer.
Because of all the benefits of digital drawing, I just can't and won't go back to drawing on paper. The work flow is so much faster and more dynamic as a whole than when drawing digitally. I use the most inexpensive wacom bamboo pen tablet (no touch functions or buttons), and it's perfect for me. I get exactly what I want, without having to practice for ages first. I understand that it isn't for everyone tho.
Mark you are my inspiration i love your work and yesterday i ordered Mastering Manga :)
actually this guy is really worth looking at I was impressed with his artwork.
Wow, this is cool and helpful! I do have a question, though. Can this process be imitated in Paint Tool SAI (which I'm thinking about buying)? Tips/comments appreciated...
Honestly, that´s personal preference, just like with markers and color pencils.
Some people can add color and shading better with pencils, other feel more comfortable with digitaly painting stuff.
One big advantage in painting and shading digitaly is that you can correct errors much easier, however if you have the skill, you can always achieve the same effect like other people do with digital means.
Photoshop is not free. You have to buy it. But there are other similar programms like gimp.
I know I need to scan it in and I put it into photoshop, I mess with the contrast and brightness to clean things up a bit, but when it comes to setting it up layer-wise I always get messed up with on that.
It's good to see the anime community growing from different people around the world.
According to his "BONUS VIDEO: Japan! ^_^" video, Mark promised he was going to put that phrase somewhere in the fifth volume of "Brody's Ghost" somewhere. I'm looking forward to seeing this page when he releases the book! :)
hey mark, do you also draw lineart with your graphic tablet sometimes, or do you use it exclusively to edit your traditionally drawn pages in terms of toning?
I found this video extremely helpful. Thanks for the constant help!
Could you show us how to draw Japanese structures? both traditional and modern? THANKS!
This is so much helpful! Thank you Mark, you are the best!!!!!
What brush setting do you use so that it only lightens the grey, not erase it?
SugarRush! Love Wreck it Ralph! My kids have watched it so many times they've memorised big parts of the movie.
Pretty basic, pretty simple, but really good for all begginers out there :)
You show that "simple" is not bad. Good job.
Yay! I've been waiting for some sort of digital drawing video for a long timee! ^^
I was wondering if your book 'Mastering Manga', do you show how to do the guidelines like you do in your videos?
Good night, I was wondering if you could please do more videos on 3/4 perspective and foreshorten?
thicker paper=ink less likely to "catch" in the paper+ink dries faster+wont go soggy with paint of ink. the surface is also smoother so when you draw a line it shows easily, thats why pencil lines on notepaper always look...off.
Mark, I have a question not related to this video, I like to sketch and draw pictures and need some new pencil crayons to colour with, I was wondering if which brand I should get. I don't colour my pictures often but I do want something of good quality. I would like your opinion on this please!
3 questions i gotta ask do you have a tablet? and what kind of scanner is best for manga/comic scripts to edit in photoshop? can your books get delivered in Canada?
Hey it's me!
Your new subscriber!!
Epic A Hey it's me!
The guy you subscribed to!! ;)
markcrilley :D
Taking a lower perspective would allow that figure to be silouetted against the white background instead of the gray, drawing the eye to it more clearly.
Can you please do a video about that. I really love to draw and do'nt know what to use
i agree; i find it quite "sleep inducing" myself when i'm using Photoshop, its just click after click, not quite the same compared to drawing. Also there is a Sugar Rush sign in Gintama i think, i know it is something sugar related.
mark i noticed that there was a little odd-shaped tone on the walls, making the edge of the windows have the dirty effect, you didn't really explain how you did those...can you please tell?
I would to see the sleep inducing process of toning because honestly I haven't clue how to do it. I've read tutorials but I'm a hands on/watch someone do it first learner so I can get my own technique for it.
I like digital art more than traditional, for my own style personally. And I use paint tool SAI. I use to use photoshop, but it stopped working so I moved to SAI and I like it more than photoshop. But I'm going to start using it for backgrounds more because they have more effects then SAI.
Mark, is there any way I can do toning/shadows with out photoshop? I mean, I do have a computer and scanner and a drawing tablet, I can use photoshop to do that, but it's just I prefer keeping to just regular paper. What I mean is, what can I use or how do I shadow/tone on a regular piece of paper with out using any digital media? If you have a link to a video or if you can explain it to me that would be wonderful :)
Mikasa from Hero Many professional illustrators never use computer programs of any kind. I say find the approach that works best for you.
markcrilley
Thank you :)

Diluted ink would work better. (That is, ink with various percentages of water added.) "Deluded" ink, or ink that has been lied to, confused or decieved in some way, might be a lot harder to find :)
Or you could try grey (gray) Coptic markers; a standby for designers for generations. Or pencil, or conte crayon, which can both be smudged and erased to create interesting ranges of tone.
Or a combination of all of them. Why limit yourself?
Hi Mark, could you do a tutorial on those long coats, like that one Alucard from Hellsing is wearing.
me encantan los viernes para poder aprender y admirar los dibujos de Mark
And to think people use to do that by hand ,awesome video
I guess i was hoping to see magical selection tips on selecting specific areas
Your videos are always so helpful. Thanks!
This has been very helpful for me. Thanks again!
Can you show how to pose characters in dramatic angles?
Tablet helps if you are drawing on the computer but the toning that Mark is doing can be easily done with a mouse.
I love this video! Keep up the great work Mr Mark Crilley!
What!!!! reluctant to do this video??? this video was awesome!!
Mark it would amazing if u could give me some tips on drawing using a tablet, on outlining and colouring!!! Please!!! Thanks a million!!!
Thank you :3 I always wondered how you shades your manga.
Hey Mark, I've been hearing a lot of mouse clicks in the video. Do you not have a tablet or do you prefer the mouse? Not judging; I know sometimes that's what people prefer most
How did you separate out the alley before adding the tone??
Mark since your doing online art stuff can you do a fanart of some anime of your chosing and draw a character and color. That'd be so nice to watch...i think imo
literally been waiting for this subject! YESS!
I almost learned everything I know about drawing from you.Thank You.
love your drawings and your books. how do you get ideas for your books and characters
