My son and I are creating a Manga together. I am writing the story, and he is illustrating. We lived in Japan for six years and thus are heavily influenced with the Manga style. He just turned 15 and is a very gifted artist. We very much enjoy watching your videos, and we each take something away from all of them! I just realized that I have not subbed, taking care of that now. どうもありがとうございました!

Ugh, man. I watched this video right before I started my new 2D Draw/Design class and one of the first things that my teacher told our class was, "You shouldn't be using Crayola markers and pencils and crayons in your pieces- you're not in Kindergarten any more. You can't use mechanical pencils in your work either; they're made for writing, not for shading." It broke my heart because I really admire you and when you talk about how you should find your own art supplies and how the 'trusty black prisma' might not work for you, it makes me wish my new art teacher could understand that. *sighs*
Anyway, amazing work- as per usual, Crilley! My own comic is still in its concept stage, but maybe I'll make a few panels like this, just kind of to get a feel and some practice for what's to come.

I, too, hope to one day create my own comics series. In the meantime, I have other creative projects in the works. Writing's my strong point, so if you need a writer and/or someone to edit the dialogue, send me a PM and fill me in on the basic story.

Art teachers at colleges can be pretty weird about what real artists use to do their work, because their experience is often isolated to academic art. I had to explain last year to a drawing instructor, back in freaking 2014, what a cintiq is, and she had a difficult time understanding why any artist would use one. Don't take everything teachers say too seriously, try to learn what you can though. Mechanical pencils are practically the norm among comic artists for penciling.

Dude, you are my favorite person.
All of your videos help so many people and you are seriously very talented. You are better than any art teacher I ever had in so many ways. The fact that you make things that look so complicated and beautiful into easier steps, and that you give advice rather than tell us what is "right" and "wrong"... You have no idea how much we appreciate you in every way just for helping us.
    Stay awesome!

Easiest way to do word balloons:
Once you make the square selection, right click inside the selection and click on the "stroke" option. Choose your preferred border colour and pixel size for the border, and then click OK. Now, when you remove the selection, you will see that the border is drawn along where the selection lines were.
    Hope that helps!

Thank you so much markcrilley for this video! You always have and keep inspiring me! I remember you visited the public library when I lived in Michigan in 2003, I think for a signing. I was 5 years old, so I don't quite remember. But I do remember getting an Advance Galley edition of Akiko and the Journey to Toog, which you signed and drew Spuckler on the first page. That was one of the happiest moments of my life. You inspired me so much, and I started to draw because I saw the ease with which you drew. I still cherish that book and I frequently read it.

Dear Crilley, in photoshop options : Edit - Stroke - It's an option that does a boarder in the layer that you selected, you can change the thickness, type, color, everything, is much easier, take a time to try it, it'll make your life really easier :3. Great work as always - Seth

For future text bubbles in Photoshop, you can select the area that you want white behind the text, then right click with the marquee tool still selected and just select fill, then you can just select background colour if it is set to white. You can also right click with the marquee tool selected and select the stroke option to create the black frame around the text area, you will then have options to make it exactly how you want it. Hope it helps speed up the process for you in the future :). And keep making these videos they are amazing! markcrilley

To Mark : I work on that free program called Gimp, working not as good as photoshop but working, and when I do the baloon, I fill it in blank just like you and then I have an option (in the "option" pannel at the top) where I simply can draw the line of the selection using a special brush, or just simple lines, and even choose the thickness of them.
Thumbs up so he can see plz ;)

Hey Mr. Crilley, I really enjoyed your video. Most people don't realize how much work goes into making a comic book. I think there is a an easier way for doing your balloons. Next time try this in PS: After selecting the rectangle, and making it white, go to Edit, find the Stroke function (right under Fill) then choose width, color, inside, outside etc to your liking. You'll get those black borders around your rectangle quicker. Anyway, thanks for the video!

Hey Mark, your way of finishing your drawings in photoshop not only is unorthodox, but it's really time consuming... try and look for some shape tutorials for the text box and learn what a layer mask is, it will help you with how you apply your tones.

this was incredibly helpful! thank you so much for the tips because I was really struggling to figure out how to accomplish the hand drawn/digital hybrid, and kind of thinking I had to go either way. hand drawings can have so much character and you can see the artist's hand, but PS editing is so very convenient so I'm glad I found this series!

If you want to save time, you can use the rectangle tool by pressing "U" and changing the properties to "empty inside", thickness 1pt (this looks as thin as your lines but yeah just change that number by a factor of 1, up to your liking) Here is a screenshot showing the settings i use for the thickness. Hope that helps

When creating a word block, double click your box layer and you will find an effect dialog box. open up the tab called stroke, and you can add a stroke to your little box. Adjust color and thickness (size). It can be on the inside (which will give you nice sharp corners) or the outside (which will give you rounded edges).

Here's a tip for creating the outline around the narration box . Make the box as normal on a separate layer: then click 'Edit' and select 'Stroke' in the drop down menu: this will create the outline around the entire box: you can also choose which colour and thickness you want the outline to be. It works very well.

Just as a tip for the border, you can just select the area with that square select tool and hit the right mouse button. Then, when you're mouse is in the selection, you get a menu and if I'm correct you'll get an option called "stroke (outline) the selection". Now you click this option and you just fill in the width of the pixels you want you're border to be.
I hope this helped a bit and that, although you say you want to do it your way, you'll start using this (faster) method. And thanks for the video, it really helped a lot!

Hey mark, when making the black outline around the text bubble if you double click on the white box layer and navigate to stroke it will create a black outline or any colour for that matter, it is much easier and you can control how thick you want the outline to be.

Jeez. You'll probably breeze past my comment with all this hype. But thanks alot! I mean. Iv'e been drawing comics since I was say in first grade. And I never sorta got the feeling of how someone does it. I understood the parts. First you write it out. then rough. But now that iv'e seen you. I'm more confident I can find my path. Another thing is, your probably the only artist that I know who opens up a how to, with drawing. And When I need some instructions or a pick-me-up. I know where to get it! :3. Seriously thank you for making my drawings evolve from what they were, with your help on explaining in depth what your supposed to do. and show how you do it. I cant possible show my appreciation enough!

Thank you so much, Mark Crilley Sensei! You're a real Master. If you had a school I would rush into it.
I'm so glad you make these videos to show the process to realize a manga/comics because there aren't many on Internet and especially of that quality and sincerity. It's been a long time a draw, but I still find it quite hard to start a Manga/comics, because despite what we can think it's not that easy as it looks, and your way of explaining every step to that realization is simple to understand yet very efficient. I'm really grateful to your kindness.
It's truly helpful and I'm gonna command your comics, Brody's Ghost, not only to support you, but because I like your work. I've read the synopsis of Brody's Ghost and the story looks captivating to me. I like anti-heroes ^_^
