Biggest secret known for all future artist! Practice Makes perfect! Also never ever, ever make fun on someones work, never discourage another individual from doing their art, be nice! great video Mark
Indeed, practice makes does make perfect! :D I have only been drawing since the start of last summer, and now I am able to draw to a much higher standard than I had before and that is only because I have worked hard and practiced a lot:)
I think I have some art advice for comment readers: it's much better to draw a character/characters in action instead of posing or standing still. it doesn't have to be a fight scene, it just has to tell a story.. for example: an old lady feeding birds some bread crumbs, a man reading a newspaper, a little girl playing, etc.. it's almost human nature to stop and look at these drawings.. you don't have to be good, you just have to tell a story through your drawing. that's all.
The part of this video about not being discouradged by others' art just made me feel better about myself because I kinda grew a reputation of that kid who could draw anime, then I met this girl who was way better than me at it so I was in a state of feeling very unsatisfied with myself and I started trying different thing to be good at but this video made me feel a whole lot better so I would just Like to say thank you Mark, From the bottom of my heart, now I can draw manga with full self confidence! :)
What people need to remember is that all (and I really mean ALL) skills in art are convertible. I have been drawing manga style for about three years now while very rarely drawing anything realistically. My skills developed quite a bit, and I later found that my ability to draw realistic animals had, surprisingly, grown considerably despite the fact that I hadn't drawn any in a while. So what I am saying is that any practice can help all of your other artistic skills move along.
Ok, that's it!!! I'm NOT giving up!!!! I'm WAY too inspired by you Mr.Crilley, so I will not give up! Thank you again for a great video for us aspiring manga artists!
I think it is brilliant that you make videos of your fans thoughts and the like. It gives a realistic perspective to those that learn from your work to expand their own horizons as oppose to being daunted by your drawing prowess.
I've been watching you forever and you've taught me so much about art. I flipping screamed and ran around telling my family that you put one of my comments in your video. Thanks so much! Love your stuff!
I've been a musician for most of my 35 year life and the more general tips given here have been very valuable lessons in my own pursuit. I've gotten a few "That's it, I quit" type comments on my channel and it always bums me out a little. That sort of discouraging thought process was something I quickly learned was no friend of mine. I was lucky to have some musicians tell me all about the time it took them. That inspired me to put in the hours. Greeting from Kalamazoo, Mark! We love you!
You know, I have this friend who is just amazing at drawing. When I look at her work, I get kinda envious, for I feel that my work isn't nearly as good. But it doesn't discourage me. Instead, I feel motivated to become much better. When I find someone who I think as better than me, I somehow make it into a challenge to become as good as them! It's almost like a thrilling competition for me, with the reward being improvement in my work. I'm one for challenges, so I love finding challenges. :3
Mark, thank you so much for posting so many great videos, because of you I found something I really enjoy and I could have never gained enough confidence to start drawing without your help. So I say again thank you so much for posting all these videos, you really helped change my life. Thank you.
I think the best advice is to stop comparing your art to other peoples art and start comparing it to your own art that you made yesterday to see how you improved. Hah but that's just my opinion plus I made it up from experience so maybe I'm being biased..
Never leave a can of soda in the freezer overnight = if you have inspiration now, do something with it instead of leaving it and have it burst and be impossible to work with later. Ah the Pro's of being a writer as well as an artist.
Ugh, I have a problem with looking at other people's work and getting jealous over how good they are. But then I always tells myself afterwards that everyone has their own style and I will get better as long as I keep drawing. You're an amazing artist Mark Crilley! :D
Something I've descovered over the three years I've been drawing, EVERYONE has a different style. Never criticize someone for their style not looking like yours, because everyone draws and holds a pencil differently!!
Lol! Mark You're awesome man. I wish I could show you and many others some of my work. I still need a lot of advice and pointers, but thanks for doing what you do. I don't think you get to hear that enough. Keep it up.
Your channel is just different from other channel you make me feel so personal and i can relate everything you say to whatever i experienced and you really inspired and motivated me alot thank you!!
To be honest, I'm only half watching your videos sometimes. Well part of me is watching you draw, the other is listening to what you're saying, and the rest is spent on my sketch book. I like to pop in my ear buds while I'm watching your videos. Not only do I like the sound of your voice, but when I'm drawing, there are things that you say that, while I'm drawing, I like to apply to my own art. So when you said "Art is not a race." I realized "Why am I rushing so much?" Thank you, Mark Crilley.
That lightning round XD omg I couldn't stop laughing ("If you can't draw your soul spaghetti, who will?" What???) (Ballpoint!! Freaking ballpoint!!!) There are some weird people out there
Mark crilley. Thank you so much. All of your tips have really helped me develop my drawing style . You and my dad are the best artists I know. Keep making awesome videos and don't forget the blushies
just watched a couple of your videos, nice work. being inspired is great, it's good to be teachable. don't allow pride to get in the way from adding to your skills.
When I draw i usually have some trouble when i want the person i am drawing to have a certain expression but when i make a line to dark it completely looks derpy and then i ruin it.
I tried drawing realistic for a year as practice yet I failed so manga style is only for me XD I already chose my style after 7 months of hopping from style to style haha....
You are a great inspiration to a young artist such as myself, I learn a lot of techniques from watching you. When I'm older my profession won't be in art, but that won't stop me at becoming better at what I love :D
I've been looking at Arina Tanemura's art. From your art and mine, I have improved greatly. From time to time, I refer to your Manga book. Thank you for your help Mark Crilley!! :D
I really appreciate what he says about critiques. I used to be really sensetive towards them, and I would get sad when people would put my work down. Haha, it's funny but now I actually look forward to those negative critiques. I've learned that they help me get better and better. :) So accept all critiques! Especially the negative ones!
A good and handy tool to own is a Dry erase board. I do most of my thumbnail sketches on it rather than on paper. I can blow through a couple of random sketches pretty easily on the board because of the smooth and slick surface.
agree. Micron is one of my favorite pen brands. the other one i use is the G2 series of pens (the 0.38mm). though the G2 pens are mostly for note taking and not drawing.
Really appreciate and love this video Mark! You should do more of these "conversations-with-your-viewers" type of videos. Its nice to hear your opinions in videos and its a good thing you made a full on video all about it. Thanks again, continue what you do and God bless! :)
Mark you are my role model, i am not so good at drawing but i practice every day in spite of this because i hope to be as good as you one day. i feel like i get better every time you put a video out. so keep posting videos pls
Thanks a lot Mark, i really do appreciate your work and advice it helped me draw better and have a better motivation ! Keep your happiness ! Bonjour de la France ;)
Thank you mark crilley for teaching me how to draw i starting watching your videos when the first started i was amazed and said to myself i want to try to draw that and a got attached to that style of drawing and ive watched all your videos till this day and improved alot so thank you. :)
im really loving your videos, i always feel inspired by your videos, i liked the advice you made on art styles, ive mostly drawn only animals most of my life and i only started drawing people these past 4-5 years and because of that i have yet to really discover my style, ive been trying other styles and hopefully i can find the one that's suits me best^^
I agree completely with the time comment . My friend and I are making a manga manuscript together but I only have about 3-4 hours a day due to school, homework, studying etc so really I only get maybe 8 full pages done in a week. Your videos have helped a lot, thanks so much :)
Hey Mark, I just subscribed to you and I have to say that was all really good advice from the users. I've been drawing for a just a few weeks and I find what you showed here very inspirational. I hope to learn a lot as I keep drawing and of course, I look forward to your future videos as well. And...I will definitely draw...My SOUL SPAGHETTI! Take care, Mark!
I usually listen to your videos like this when I draw. When I heard the last lighting advice an ink line spread across my character's face as I bent over laughing. Totally worth it. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. I still don't know why it was so funny but it put a smile on my face. XD
I love this art style of yours. The way you draw your characters like this. Hope to see more videos like this and maybe more tutorials on how to draw these cartoons.
I haven't seen the video yet, but most artists use a kneaded eraser. You can see one in his latest supply video. It basically leaves no little bits of eraser on the paper, is high quality, and can be shaped to a fine point if necessary. These are my favorite erasers.
hello mark. i have been watch your videos for over 5 years now and your awesome and every year i see improvement in your art and in mine i am happy i found you. still working hard to draw something that i know i can make you proud.lol i have be aspiring to be a artist for 4 year but it's a lot of work and i am glad it is because for every hurdle clear bring me happiness
My art teacher once told me "a good piece of art is never finished, only abandoned." and I think he really meant that in knowing when to stop, sometimes, you stop before you feel it's really finished, but later are glad that you stopped where you did.
Though I know this video is old. Wow, I am so envious of your inking. As someone who's been working at drawing for a long time, this is something I have so much trouble with.
I'm not exactly for so called winging but I draw sometimes "mechanically" or absent-mindedly or whatever because I do believe that it brings a degree of personality and unconscious touch to your art. It's also a good way to figure out what you can do and what could use more rehearse.
omg mark I love your channel it's so helpful!! thank you for all your amazing videos you inspire me to create my own magna series! so thank you for all your hard work!!
I also vary what I draw. I started out drawing realistic and then adopted manga style from one of my friends who only drew manga. I really hope I learn more styles, and I truly appreciate many:D
when it comes to planning comic pages I ALWAYS do a rough iddy biddy sketch before hand and edit from that. and I tend to do a thumbnail sketch when a pose is tricky to get the structure down before worrying about the style
I think that everything I see influences me in art; movies, shows, landscape. Many things can inspire artist. If you can use it, everything you see can be viewed in an artistic way.
That's actually a good quality to have as an artist. You're always going to strive to get better with knowing and accepting your faults. All you can do is thank them for their compliment and move on. You don't need someone tell you that you suck to get better, because you're already doing so yourself in your head. Anymore negativity and you'll probably end up being pissed and angry and it'll just snowball out of control. Next thing you know you aren't drawing anymore.
I know exactly what you mean I started off by copying other characters, but as time went on I started to take a pose from a drawing or photo and I drew my character in that pose. Now I can draw my characters in different poses easier. I'm still learning how to draw and I'm still working on figuring out my style but I have learned how to draw certain parts of the body better and I can draw a pose memory sometimes. Even now if I don't know how to draw a certain pose I will look at a photo for help
I was always told I worked too slow by my peers while studying art at college. I remember this one girl in particular would constantly tell me it and would refer me back to her huge painting that she did in 2 hours. Her painting only ever served as a reminder that taking your time and creating something you're proud of is better than hammering out a lumpy, messy painting as quickly as possible.
I learned a lot by this video and got a good laugh out of it as well =^ ^= Thank you for this collection, I sure will give a try to get these phrases to inspire me.
it's a kneaded eraser.it's made of putty so you can reshape it and reform it.you can buy them at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. They come is a square or rectangular shaped package and are usually about $4 to $5.
"It's better to draw imperfectly than to flawlessly draw nothing." I really needed that advice. Thank you whoever said that. :)
+Dragamation agree
"Finished, not perfect", as another RUclips artist Jake Parker puts it. :D
Biggest secret known for all future artist! Practice Makes perfect! Also never ever, ever make fun on someones work, never discourage another individual from doing their art, be nice! great video Mark
Pleids Strust Thanks!

Most people on my bus are mean
I say my superhero "Captain Rain" is the best. Superhero ever but they say
HE IS THE WORST HERO EVER
No, practice makes better. Nothing is "perfect".
Nicholas Trout ha! I certainly get your point, it seems that no artist is ever 100% happ with their work:P
I think I have some art advice for comment readers:

2 years later...this comment is relevant today.Thank you.
This is the exact problem I've had. It's nice to see some one else coming across the same conclusion...
Thanks 3 year old comment
i am defintately going to buy this book series
+ScruffyBoi Thank you!

"Draw your soul spaghetti " if that was a tumblr post, someone would have added "and now the weather"
I've been watching you forever and you've taught me so much about art. I flipping screamed and ran around telling my family that you put one of my comments in your video. Thanks so much! Love your stuff!
i read your first book and LOVED it!
+Jezebel Knight Thank you Jezebel :)
+markcrilley I LOVE "Broddies Ghost" ITS THE BEST IS YOUR OTHERE BOOK OUT
I've been a musician for most of my 35 year life and the more general tips given here have been very valuable lessons in my own pursuit. When you make a line, particularly the longest ones, don't watch the tip of your pencil, instead focus on where you are drawing the line towards.
+Axe Murderer that sounds like it could also be an inspirational life quote lol
watching you ink makes me want to try harder to improve on my inking abilities.
You know, I have this friend who is just amazing at drawing. When I look at her work, I get kinda envious, for I feel that my work isn't nearly as good. But it doesn't discourage me. Thank you.
Mark who inspired or what got you to get the motivation to be a manga artist?
thanks for posting this. Helpfully informative :)
He is where I got my drawing skills and a few others but mainly him
I am in no way talented but I like to scratch out a few drawings on occasion. I'll probably check out more of his stuff :)
Thanks Mark for all the advice you inspire me every time I watch your videos, your a great teacher !
Literally, BEST advice EVER!
I think the best advice is to stop comparing your art to other peoples art and start comparing it to your own art that you made yesterday to see how you improved. Hah but that's just my opinion plus I made it up from experience so maybe I'm being biased..
+27th letter Wow good advice
when I look at your art I try to see how I could improve or how I could become a better artist. Your art work inspires me to work on my art!
Never leave a can of soda in the freezer overnight = if you have inspiration now, do something with it instead of leaving it and have it burst and be impossible to work with later.
Ah the Pro's of being a writer as well as an artist.
Yay finally someone who is a writer and artist! Tell me when you write a book :3
BAD
Ugh, I have a problem with looking at other people's work and getting jealous over how good they are. But then I always tells myself afterwards that everyone has their own style and I will get better as long as I keep drawing.
You're an amazing artist Mark Crilley! :D
"What the eye can see, the hand can draw." This is a quote by my middle school art teacher Mrs. Rosien. She was wonderful and inspirational ^-^
Actually, the expression is centuries old.
Oh XD Opps, do you know who originally said it? I'd like to know :3
I really love watching your pieces come together. They all look so good :)
Something I've descovered over the three years I've been drawing, EVERYONE has a different style. Never criticize someone for their style not looking like yours, because everyone draws and holds a pencil differently!!
The lightning round was soooooo funny, thank you for putting that in!
YEAH IT WAS!!!!
Whenever I listen to other people critiquing my artwork they say stuff like "the eyes should be green because I hate blue"
bluelivesmatter.
Tell them that it isn't their preference, it's your choice. Tell them it's not the coloring that matters, it's the anatomy
The advice here is definitely helpful and I found it interesting. Thanks for the video Mark!
draw your soul spaghetti. best advice ever.
Agreed
PAPYRUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol! Mark You're awesome man. I wish I could show you and many others some of my work. I still need a lot of advice and pointers, but thanks for doing what you do. I don't think you get to hear that enough. Keep it up.

I think I shouldn't get discouraged because I'm only EIGHT. I still have time to learn.
I really love the scene you drew. It jumps out on the page and looks so real! You're so amazing ^_^
When I draw i usually have some trouble when i want the person i am drawing to have a certain expression but when i make a line to dark it completely looks derpy and then i ruin it.
Really enjoyed this video. Picked up somethings watching you draw. It was good to hear everybody's remarks. Thanks.
I tried drawing realistic for a year as practice yet I failed so manga style is only for me XD I already chose my style after 7 months of hopping from style to style haha....
sad... really sad...
You are a great inspiration to a young artist such as myself, I learn a lot of techniques from watching you. When I'm older my profession won't be in art, but that won't stop me at becoming better at what I love :D
If my soul is dark and full of cobwebs does that me my "soul spaghetti" is creepy pasta?
I've been looking at Arina Tanemura's art. From your art and mine, I have improved greatly. From time to time, I refer to your Manga book. Thank you for your help Mark Crilley!! :D
How does one draw their souls spaghetti
Find your favorite thing. The thing that lives in your soul. And draw it eating spaghetti.
Great advice, Mark! This vid inspires me! Thank you.
Mark you are my role model, i am not so good at drawing but i practice every day in spite of this because i hope to be as good as you one day. i feel like i get better every time you put a video out. so keep posting videos pls

thanks for the awesome advice an inspiration. will defo use this info to help my art and art channel. thanks a bunch
I believe it is a type of clay eraser. I used one in art class to help clean up my pencil project. It helps having a clay major as a student teacher.
when it comes to planning comic pages I ALWAYS do a rough iddy biddy sketch before hand and edit from that. and I tend to do a thumbnail sketch when a pose is tricky to get the structure down before worrying about the style
I loved all of this advice, thanks for doing this video!
Mark, you are great!!!!!!!!!
I grabbed Book 5 off my shelf and looked at it while you were inking.
Stage Lined Sweet! Thanks for getting Brody's Ghost. :)
Thanks for the good work with answering so many questions!
Always have Inspiration and Motivation, it goes a long way in time consuming projects!
I've read how 2 draw manga one and two and 1-3 of Brody's ghost . I love your art and your mangas!!!
OH MY GOSSHHH!! Yo you are the best cartoonist i ever saw! Im gonna try drawing manga (since one of the advice things is try diffferent styles)
I love how clean that looks :3
I think that everything I see influences me in art; movies, shows, landscape. Many things can inspire artist. If you can use it, everything you see can be viewed in an artistic way.
I really enjoyed this video, great idea man! Could listen to something like this all day.
That's actually a good quality to have as an artist. You're always going to strive to get better with knowing and accepting your faults. All you can do is thank them for their compliment and move on. You don't need someone tell you that you suck to get better, because you're already doing so yourself in your head. this is really great advice! im just starting out, i will deffinately keep this in mind

Her painting only ever served as a reminder that taking your time and creating something you're proud of is better than hammering out a lumpy, messy painting as quickly as possible.
I learned a lot by this video and got a good laugh out of it as well =^ ^=
