Just got this D5100 for Christmas a little upgrade from the D3100 for me. Thank you so much Dave for explaining and showing this HDR how to set it up and how it works I am off now to your web site to have a look at those photos cheers
@abhi8384 Another possible reason is HDR only works on JPG files, not on RAW files. Maybe if you change your options on: Shooting Menu-Image quality-JPEG fine, normal or basic.
@abhi8384 in fact, I am a starter too ;) yes, the lens is good for indoor and outdoor too... maybe you just need to turn your lens switch from "M" to "M/A" in order to switch it to autofocus. Try different autofocus modes (AF-S,AF-C or AF-A), or different AF area modes (Single-point AF area mode, Dynamic-area AF, 3D-tracking (11 points) or Auto-area AF. Before shooting don't forget to press the shutter button (only partially) to focus first.
@sfu421 Or just use lowest ISO setting as possible. I usually shoot with ISO 100 to reduce the amount of noise dramatically. And then asdjust the shutterspeed or aperture instead.
@yaudtube I was wondering the same thing. Maybe I'm missing something simple - I just bought the 5100 and haven't had much time to play around with it, but..mine will only take two pictures in HDR mode. I've been trying to figure out how to get three.
@andrw24 Did you set the camera in live view? You will hear three shots, but there's still only two shots for the hdr because when you shoot in live view mode you always hear two shots. I'm not sure though...
I think flip-screen is not only for video but for still photos with different angles, also when you want to get yourself in the photo. It is not condition to have vary angle screen with full video control.
@alexmottram07 sounds gr8, I am veryyy much new to photography! I am sure I can learn lots of stuff here :) last night I tried using 55-200mm lens but for distant objects I got only blur images while for closer objects it gave me amazing clearity and effects ! would you be able to tell me why is that ? Is the same lens good for indoor or outdoor photography ?
@abhi8384 I'm glad it helped. If you have any other question we can share/answer it here; I am learning a lot these days about the Nikon 5100, I'm just loving it!
@cornbits311 I'm guessing you were shooting in RAW format. I had the same problem last night and realized that you have to be shooting in JPEG or it won't work.
THanks for the tutorial. But why didn't you just turn off self timer if you didn't want the long wait? By the way, for some reason my nikon won't let me go to Shooting Menu... It says the camera cannot, at it's "current state" or something.
Can you tell me what the settings have to be on the d5100 to use the hdr mode? I'm not able to select it.. it says, it can not be used in the current settings.
@vrie8 hey I have the same problem as "urinmyhart" has. I tried M mode but it doesnt work. I think there'es something wrong with my camera. I don't have some of the options that you have on yours. I keep getting the "THIS OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE AT CURRENT SETTINGS OR IN THE CAMERA'S CURRENT STATE" message...???
Hello, Thanks for a tutorial. However, I still have one dilemma. After taking a HDR photo, on your live preview display, photo still looks like overexposed trough the window. Do you need to some additional software or something to get final HDR as you are presented as "HDR in Camera" ? I have the same camera, and in the camera display I'm also not satisfied with it. But I'm never transfer it to PC to check :/ ... Is that just a display "error" or it needs more editing ? Thanks ;)
I just figured out that one can accidentally disable the easy HDR mode if you have selected auto-exposure bracketing elsewhere. It comes back to life again when you turn exposure bracketing off again. ( I button, bkt in the bottom right ). HDR only works in P, A, S, and M.
No it takes 2, I had the same question, what is happening is that the mirror locks up to enable live view mode and falls down again when the process is completed. It happens even when taking a single shot. Thus giving an appearance of 1 more shot. hope that helps.. :)
hey ! everytime I put my D5100 to manual mode and I wanna change the aperture it doesnt work , it keeps changing the " SHUTTER SPEED " instead ,, how to change aperture ?
@m3g1 If you chose to shoot and record RAW images, HDR would be not available. So get back to the menu and choose to shoot with JPEG only :D hope this helps
Hi there, how come that my HDR setting can't be turned on my D5100? It says"THIS OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE AT CURRENT SETTINGS OR IN THE CAMERA'S CURRENT STATE" Thanks for answering :)
One problem with D5100, there is not a lot of control. You have to go to menu and turn thin on and then use it, which is quite difficult to do every single time, you want to use a feature, for example timer. There are only 2 short cut keys but functions are a lot.
In HDR mode it makes it himself i think, and he uses the photomatix pro software to adjust the contrast and other setting, but i'm not sure. Sorry if i'm wrong. My friend has a Nikon D5100 i will try it out and i'll be back with a right answer :)).
They don't have the same sensor, D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000. Also, D5100 has continuous AF while you shoot video. There are more AF points in D5100, it also has external mic input or whatever and I can't remember anything else right now but there are also some effects and the ISO range is larger on D5100. Just google "D5100 VS. D3100" and you'll have all the answers.
@HomeStudioMovies I had the very same problem, but... I just found the solution!!! All you have to do is to reset the Shooting Menu! (Shooting Menu/Reset shooting menu/yes)...
Well, in the camera store they also didnt know how to put the self timer on 2 seconds. And I agree, in terms of convenient settings the d5100 can be a pain in the ass. The EOS600D is much easier to handle but unfortunately has no HDR. Here you depend on photoshop.
@m3g1 I had the very same problem, but... I just found the solution!!! All you have to do is to reset the Shooting Menu! (Shooting Menu/Reset shooting menu/yes)...
You can change the timer time, by going into the custom settings menu, then Timers/AE Lock, then scroll down to self-timer. There, you can change the timer time. You're welcome!
There is only 2 picture !!! just read the manual! the 3. noise what u hear its not the 3. expo, its just a mirror coz u rae in live view! sorry for my poor language im hungarian. And if im wrong somebody correct me pls
So D5100 is basically D3100 with tilt screen, and it has a HDR feature, when D3100 doesn't? Why is that :\ I mean it's firmware thing, not hardware, hardware-wise they are pretty much same.
@kathleen023 and why does anyone care what your brother thinks? or are you making that up, coz you did write "friend" in the reply to a different comment. Plus you should know Canon 5D MK2 is killing the photography range so I think your brother/friend/you are wrong.

nice video.
At D5100, what is the difference between HDR, Multiple Exposure and Auto Bracketing?
@yaudtube I was wondering the same thing. Maybe I'm missing something simple - I just bought the 5100 and haven't had much time to play around with it, but..mine will only take two pictures in HDR mode. I've been trying to figure out how to get three.

It is worth noting that the HDR menu is only available in the dependent modes (M,A,S, or P)
@sladjanvasic try playing with aperture/shutterspeed/exposure compensation.
I think flip-screen is not only for video but for still photos with different angles, also when you want to get yourself in the photo. It is not condition to have vary angle screen with full video control.
@TheodoreTDT yeah HDR isn't available in RAW because a RAW image is only what the sensor see so all 3 pic`s would look the same
@alexmottram07 sounds gr8, I am veryyy much new to photography! I am sure I can learn lots of stuff here :)

I think I figured it out. You have to be in one of the P/S/A/M and can't be using RAW format. (Have to have JPEG selected.)
does canon T3i have HDR?
you are a gentleman, tahnks for taking the time to share your skills.
@vrie8 hey I have the same problem as "urinmyhart" has. I tried M mode but it doesnt work. I think there'es something wrong with my camera. I don't have some of the options that you have on yours. how can i use my hdr in d5100 it says that "this option is not available at current settings or in cameras current state".
i found one stuck pixel ont he LCD screen, should i take it back?
I just figured out that one can accidentally disable the easy HDR mode if you have selected auto-exposure bracketing elsewhere. It comes back to life again when you turn exposure bracketing off again. ( I button, bkt in the bottom right ). HDR only works in P, A, S, and M.
Dave I got a question for you ,on my Nikon D5100 has an option on menu "High ISO NR" what is that for? Thanks.
@GamerRadar Maybe all you have to do is reset the Shooting Menu first...
@urinmyhart I am facing the same issue mate ! have you found solution yet?
thnx in Advance !
@christina are your battery not fully charged?
No it takes 2, I had the same question, what is happening is that the mirror locks up to enable live view mode and falls down again when the process is completed. It happens even when taking a single shot. Thus giving an appearance of 1 more shot. hope that helps.. :)
do u need photoshop to merge the photos taken with 3 different exposures????
hey ! everytime I put my D5100 to manual mode and I wanna change the aperture it doesnt work , it keeps changing the " SHUTTER SPEED " instead ,, how to change aperture ?
I read the manual of D5100 and it says it only take 2 shots in HDR mode. How come your video shows THREE shots? Thanks
@SpaceDyeVest yup thats right it wont work in RAW format.. i just read the manual haha..
can someone tell me how to enable auto focus in video mode?
hey my camera isn;t on raw and its on JPEG normal, HDR option is still unavailable, do you know how i might be able to get it to work? thanks! :)
@IsaSartor Hi, I think Nikon D5100 is much better than D7000 and Canon 7D for video recording.
Which lens did you use?(Sorry For Bad English)
@m3g1 If you chose to shoot and record RAW images, HDR would be not available. So get back to the menu and choose to shoot with JPEG only :D hope this helps

@IsaSartor 7D better for video
@alexmottram07 that didnt help me ! still gives the same message !
any other solutions ?
@totoni2000 not built in HDR.
There isn't a need then for HDR software?
thanks for this info
.... been trying to figure it out for quite a long time, u've helped me a lot!
Can we do HDR Video in the D5100?
@HomeStudioMovies Make sure to render in JPEG, not in RAW.
thanks so much..almost frustrating! why i can't switch when it's in RAW...
Does anyone know how to use bracketing (not just the in camera) or histograms with the Nikon d5100?
on my d5100 the hdr mode only take 2 pictures, the one in this video takes 3, why is that?
hi Dave are u migrating to NIKON now?!
When i shoot in the hdr mode it only takes 2 shots. Can someone please tell me how to make it take 3 shots like it does in the video? Thanks.
In HDR mode it makes it himself i think, and he uses the photomatix pro software to adjust the contrast and other setting, but i'm not sure. Sorry if i'm wrong. My friend has a Nikon D5100 i will try it out and i'll be back with a right answer :)).
Does anybody know why the camera takes 3 shots whilst in LiveView-Mode, and only 2 shots whilst using the manual viewfinder?
where did u buy ur shirt??
What a great tutorial.
Thanks ever so much for this, and keep up the great work you produce.
-Matt
You can set the fn button to activate HDR mode with one click.
N51000 here..so i appears under the HRD on the menu it can only be a jpeg shot..any manual away to get three shots in Raw??
Why?... You can simply use the raw file later to make an HDR. That contains all the information.
eniggy7 just shoot in bracket mode

how do you turn on your HDR on.. im wont turn on.
how do I get photomatics pro ?
Well, in the camera store they also didnt know how to put the self timer on 2 seconds.
And I agree, in terms of convenient settings the d5100 can be a pain in the ass. The EOS600D is much easier to handle but unfortunately has no HDR. Here you depend on photoshop.

@m3g1 I had the very same problem, but... I just found the solution!!! All you have to do is to reset the Shooting Menu! (Shooting Menu/Reset shooting menu/yes)...

can anyone tell me how to Activate HDR on my D5100? Seems like its disabled ! I am a beginner
D5100 in HDR only takes 2 photos , he thinks his is taking 3 because he is using Live View , the 3rd one is only the mirror flipping back up
I'm garbage with photomatix pro so this will be very useful, thanks!
how come mine takes only 2 pictures?
It is the same on D5200, HDR only in JPG.
can someone tell me what soothing is?
You can change the timer time, by going into the custom settings menu, then Timers/AE Lock, then scroll down to self-timer. There, you can change the timer time. You're welcome!
I had bracketing on .. so when i turned that off, it worked perfectly...
Nice! More on the D5100!
Great explanation, thank you !
thank you Dave.
There is only 2 picture !!! just read the manual! the 3. noise what u hear its not the 3. expo, its just a mirror coz u rae in live view! sorry for my poor language im hungarian. And if im wrong somebody correct me pls
I put HRD on my function button on the left side of the flash - Easy to reach!
So D5100 is basically D3100 with tilt screen, and it has a HDR feature, when D3100 doesn't? Why is that :\ I mean it's firmware thing, not hardware, hardware-wise they are pretty much same.
does not work with any option i choose
@playmyyoyo Thanks alot Dave!

@kathleen023 and why does anyone care what your brother thinks? or are you making that up, coz you did write "friend" in the reply to a different comment.
Plus you should know Canon 5D MK2 is killing the photography range so I think your brother/friend/you are wrong.
