The Making of "Tin Trio"

- I've published this video to other sites, but I wanted to give it a home on RUclips as well. The basic premise of this tutorial is how I achieved the triplet effect, but there are plenty of tips and techniques beyond that, so hopefully this will help you in your own video work.
- - FAQ - -
How are you applying the ramp effect to create the gradient mask?
- This link shows basically how to do this: dvxuser.com/V6/archive/index.p...
How are you syncing up the audio so perfectly?
- Look closely. I'm using earphones to listen to the dialogue and music.
UPDATE: One question I get asked a lot that I didn't cover in the making-of video is how the videos are synced together so well. If you look very closely, each character has an ear piece. They are listening to the previous character's recording. This makes the timing and interaction perfectly natural during filming.

It's tutorials like this that help me get a step closer to my dream of being a director. Thank you very much, sir.
that's very kind of you to show us how you made the video!! you are a genius
after closer inspection i noticed that. very clever. great work!
My college degree was computer animation. These videos are basically my hobby.
Think it's amazing how much work you went through...But it paid off at the end!
Thanks for the quick class! Hmmm, I might try making a video, who knows! Very easy to understand tutorial. I can't wait to see what other videos you got up your sleeve. Later!
Mr. Bazzle, this is really cool. I've enjoyed the videos and I've really enjoyed seeing how they're made.
Props

I am blown away that it's just one person...
ITs amazing!!! im a graphic designer, so i use photoshop and i really understood what you explained, i never thought After Effects could be that easy =), it was amazing keep up the great work and the amazing music!
i love your videos and now i get to see how it was done! keep up the great music and work.
Sure. The earpieces are plugged into my iPod, which is in my pocket. I filmed "Me" first. The audio Me heard through the earpiece was simply a metronome tick, so his playing would stay at the correct tempo. I took the recorded audio from Me, and then played it back during the filming of Myself. All Myself has to do is respond to what he's hearing from Me, and then play his part of the music. The same applies to I. Pretty straightforward - just took a lot of pre-planning and practice.
Wow, yes, that makes perfect sense, though now I see why you had to adjust for lighting differences! Perhaps I'll try that on the next "2 Hot Guys" video...
Thanks,
~Trav
Exactly what I figured! Pretty cool man, keep it up.
yeah, after effects is amazing. if you check out the after effects classroom in a book it breaks down all the effects and includes a dvd with lessons on it. it's really easy to use.
wow that's amazing...ur a genius! At 1st I thought there were three of you guys
I've been wondering how you did the timing thing with the dialogues. How come they are so perfectly syncronized?
You're the man, dude! Peace.
i've done this type of thing before but not with an ear piece. completely genius! where'd you get yours?
The ramp effect can easily be moved around in the shot. So at the end, I simply slid the ramp to the left side of the screen, which makes the video layer for "Me" disappear. The same applies for "I". As long as the camera does not move, and the objects in the scene (especially the chairs) all stay in the same spot, this effect will go off without a hitch.
If you look very carefully, I'm wearing earbuds. I'm listening to my other selves during each recording. Then, I can naturally respond to what the other just said. And there was a bit of practicing before each take.
Hey thanks a lot!...I'll try to do my own (hehee) I love all of your work. You awesome rock!I hope you keep on the good work...GRATZZ
OK, So There Is Just 1 Person ! AMAZING !
I've never used Vegas, but you might try looking for any kind of masking tools. At least with After Effects, you can get the same result using masks. Vegas might have that, too.
It's actually the earbuds to my iPod, which was in my pocket during filming.
Thanks for sharing, indeed enjoyed the video
"Drug in"? I thought as much... :P
Good bit of work dude.
Yer right. And that's the technique I used for the second Tin Trio video.
it sounds funny when ur talking about urself but three "different" ppl at the same time :) lol and really good job... im gonna go download that program right now!!
What about the audio? Does it over-lay and mix that easily? Or did you have to do mixing separately?
impressive!
This is very interesting, I did something similar in a few of my videos. I'll post as a video response... all I did was layer and crop with some edge feathering in Final Cut. Seems like it was a lot simpler. I wish I had better timing, that's what impressed me the most about your clip. Can you put a little more info about how you used the earpieces?
Thanks,
~Trav
Check with Amazon or Adobe or pretty much any computer software retailer. Prices vary.
Instead of ramping couldn't you have just cropped each video with a soft edge? Each video would have been 1/3 of the screen. That would have eliminated the need to color correct... assuming all three videos were shot under the same lighting conditions... I'll have to play around with this and see what I can come up with. I LOVED the original video! Good job! And thanks for sharing the secret to your video!
I have no idea. It's been a very long time since I've touched Pinnacle.
Unless you do it in a controlled environment, such as closing the curtains and using the home lights.
No need for a green screen. It's the earpieces that make all the difference.
u did a rly nice vid xD congrats
Hey Scott, are you using an older version of After Effects because the Adobe one I see now will not work on my Windows 7 32 bit. Is there a place I can get the older version you have been using?
I've never used Vegas. After Effects is my program of choice.
wow thats cool i really wanna do some stuff like this or go into game designing
Great instructions. Thank you so much for your explanations and the video, itself. Are you a professional in the video field?
That is correct.
If you look very carefully, we're all wearing earbuds.
So how do you make sure each part of the song goes together? Did you just do a recording and put it over it?
What the name of the program you use to make this video? And 5 stars for this video and the other two. Great job
how long did that take u to make that whole videos
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MAN V NICE
I was sure that was done with green screen, but the lighting was too perfect. Now I know why. Is that doable with pinnacle studios 12?
U have brains bruv!
I know you have Adobe After Effects but what version is it ?
This could be a REALLY dumb question, but might this be possible on Windows Movie Maker?
Where can you get and how much is Adobe After Effects? Thanks...
how did you time it so well though?
im going to try thisout right now...if i need help ima look to u for it
*choke*after effects*choke
so are you not a fan of sony vegas then mate? coz i find it a hell of lot easy cloning myself in vegas than in after effects....
Tin Trio 1 - one weekend
Tin Trio 2 - one week
Check the video description for the link on how this is achieved.
