  • Health anxiety often leads individuals to perceive greater danger or threat to their health than is actually present. This doesn't mean they are imagining physical symptoms; these symptoms are real. The issue lies in how they interpret these symptoms. Health anxiety sufferers tend to think catastrophically, which intensifies anxiety and exacerbates physical sensations related to anxiety. There are four common catastrophic thought patterns in health anxiety: 1) Overestimating the likelihood of having a severe health issue, especially rare diseases; 2) Overestimating how bad things will be if a health problem exists, ignoring the potential for effective treatment; 3) Ignoring or dismissing less catastrophic explanations for symptoms or reassurance from doctors; 4) Underestimating their ability to cope with potential health problems, leading to excessive worry. This catastrophic thinking not only increases anxiety due to the thoughts themselves but also intensifies physical sensations of anxiety. This creates a cycle where heightened anxiety leads to more symptoms, more worry, and further catastrophic interpretations. Breaking this cycle involves changing the way individuals interpret and think about physical symptoms, aiming for less catastrophic perspectives to reduce health anxiety's grip on their lives.

Unreal. I've "had" just about all of this. Stomach pains/increased toilet useage? Colon cancer. Headache? Brain tumor. Fatigue? Also cancer.
You really hit the nail on the head when you brought the arthritis example, in terms of what that will MEAN for my future. Won't be able to do all I once did (then add in shame and self loathing for not appreciating those things enough up to this point in my life. HUGE one.)
So these narratives absolutely seem to be something that is lurking beneath the symptoms & anxiety. I'm 45 now, and at the juncture where not only is the body showing more signs of aging, but also a time that so much from my childhood is coming to the surface. I notice that the "energy frequency" these health anxiety thoughts operate at actually FEEL like so many of the fear based thoughts that plagued me virtually every day of my early childhood. I just don't know what to DO with those buried emotions and anxieties.
    Great video, thank you.

Thank you so much Dr. Rami. You explained the cycle I go through so perfectly. I now have a much better understanding of my health anxiety, and hope I can work on managing it.

Why is it that if i see a news, for example, of a person having a heart attack, my mind almost automatically goes "that's going to happen to you too" and it will start this dibilitatiing cycle of worry and anxiety. How do you deal with that?

I realize Dr. Nader that you focus on CBT, which is a different model than somatic experiencing or "psycho-physiological" approaches etc. But in health anxiety, I see a lot of overlap of CBT with "mind-body" (or "unlearning") models. For me health anxiety fuels ongoing mind-body syndrome issues, where my anxious brain keeps creating physical sensations even though there is nothing medically wrong, and the anxiety and hypervigilance over the symptoms just keeps the whole cycle going. CBT helps me cope and/or recognize behaviors that do not help. MBS approaches help me address the underlying stress and emotions that is driving the "symptoms" in the first place.

It is natural for everyone to fear death. When we see someone suffering or in a lot of pain, we often imagine ourselves in that situation, wondering if we might experience the same suffering. Fearing what may happen tomorrow only serves to destroy the peace we have today. Instead, we should focus on being present in the moment, as whatever will happen is likely to happen regardless of our fears.

What might cause healthy anxiety? I think that one possible reason could be past personal experiences. For instance, children raised by parents suffering from serious illnesses may develop a tendency to anticipate worst-case scenarios if they find themselves in similar situations in the future."

I'm definitely discovering more and more, just how much my childhood has to do with what I'm feeling now regarding the health anxiety.

Thank you Dr. Nader for creating this wonderful content! Is the conclusion or next part of this video in the works? Because I believe this is really helpful for me as I am a person who has health anxiety. I think I've mentioned this previously in other comments, but, through your videos, I have realized how to approach getting a better handle of things. Specifically through a CBT type approach. I'm in the process of doing so right now. Thank you.
