The key to this device is it’s 4:3. We don’t have enough screens over 3.5 inches that are 4:3 so that makes this device pretty unique and in my opinion it’s the sole reason to get it. I never understood widescreens on emulation handhelds that are meant to play games that are 4:3. This is the first device with enough power to play PS2 that actually has a 4 inch 4:3 screen and I’m here for it!
+1 on the ergo, especially if you like using the analog sticks. I’ve been playing a lot of N64 and as nice as the Retroid Pocket 5 is, the stick placement looks actually bad for large hands. Unless you want to drop $350 on an Odin 2, this looks like the best option if ergonomics is a deal maker/breaker. I would have liked to see a bit better chipset, but this should do. I have a Steam Deck and a 8845HS mini pc in the living room of I want to run higher stuff.
@@natalyakeane not true at all. Retroids 4:3 screen is too small on the mini version. This is the only handheld with a big enough 4:3 screen that can still play ps2. Pretty unique. Plus The retroid Mini can’t even use shaders. The resolution is defective.
This should have come out first instead of the cube. I bought the cube and enjoyed it for a month or so but eventually the 1:1 aspect ratio started showing its downsides. I ended up trading it, and an additional $200, for an ayaneo air pro 5825u version. Now that the 406H released I have a hard time convincing myself it's worth the purchase.
Great video, can I ask what bezel feature you are using in your gameplay? It looks like it extends and blurs the image on screen. Such as the fzero @0:55 I really like that. Thanks
We need HD OLED screens in these Anbernic handhelds and other brands. Bump it up to 4.5-5 inch while maintaining the 4x3 ratio. Add 6 face buttons where there is space like seen on OG Xbox controller. Hopefully they can improve in the future.
So what do I get if I do want to play GC, PS2 and Dreamcast? I was going to get one of these but I saw someone playing Dreamcast Soul Calibur and it was lagging. I would like to play some old favorites like Dead or Alive on DC and GC games like Wind Waker. Any recommendations for hardware?
Amazing review, love your battery tests! No plans to get a T820 portable, but If I was I would love to see something with the RP5 screen size from anbernic.
The GPD Pocket 4 is my next handheld. Going for the max sku and pairing it with my BSP-D8 Pro and a pair of 9 inch 2560x1600 500 nits portable monitors.
Got myself an RG405M for 126$ while on sale from Retroid. I used it for a week now, got Gamma OS on it and honestly, if not taking the resolution scaling into account (I used 1x), I got even GoW2 to run smoothly with no dips. Plus, looks wise and pocketability wise, the RG405M is goated, the RG406H looks pretty bad and very chunky. I'll be upgrading when Anbernic comes out with a same or somehwat similar form factor to RG405M with an SD chip or something equivalent
This is awful value compared to the much better and similarly priced Retroid pocket mini and 5 handhelds. Those have OLED screens and snapdragon processors for 190-219$. Way better game compatibility image quality performance etc for not much more
It's $160 on anbernic website. Comes setup and ready to go. Unlike the retroid where you gotta download all the emulators and put the games on it. For a high price.
not even close the d pad on this one is a huge red flag for me. To be really honest I got myself the Odin 2 for my birthday in September and even though it's just the base model, nothing else seems to be worth it anymore. my only real gripe for the Odin is that it is kind of heavy, it's a very small flaw that I've noticed nobody talks about in the reviews

this wil replace both my 405m and rg cube....im sure i will use it even more than my odin 2...same like i use more the rg cube
The The 407H will be such a good device
With that said, I will probably be getting a 406H anyway.
If it has a sd8xx....then hopefully yes. I have the cube and it it soo comfortable.... I just wish it was a bit more powerful with an SD865 maybe.
Anbernic will find some crappy Unisoc to ruin the rg407h and extend the weekly console release
Great video Michael! I always love to watch your reviews!
This is my ideal retro hanheld
- decent performance upto PS2
- decent price
- aspect ratio
- ergonomic

my 3dsxl, didn't use it for 6 months. Still full battery when I turned it on.
our 2DS - didn't use it for years - still full battery when we turned it on last week
My nes, haven't turned on for 40 years and it's full battery.
the anbernic t820 handhelds make very little sense with the new retroid handhelds coming out for not much more
Anbernic being anbernic

@@turnbasedtoddy7664also, the shipping rates and taxes with retroid devices make them almost double the price of the 406 line.
This one is more my style! I like the ideal of a pocketable handheld to use while just waiting around, like at the dmv

you can tweak the deadzones on the system settings as well as the circular or square range
It felt like you tried to undersell the Retroid 5--it has an amazing OLED screen. That on itself is a great reason to get it.
I want this Handheld and the RG406V! 😍

Amazing shirt !
does it charge off of usb pd
Fzero GX runs perfect if you change the settings, turn off dual core and turn it on again and boom perfect.
Can it play God of war 1 & 2?
So all PS2 and GC games its already on the device? or what?
For that price I would rather get a retroid pocket 4
Good point!
Is it worth getting?I have the RG505 I got it in March of this year or should I get the RG556
When does it come out?

Any recommendations for hardware?
Would the gpu driver issues likely be resolved? Would that have to be an android update or seperate? Thanks
Seems like a good one.
can you record play and post in youtube.
Would you recommend this over the Retroid Pocket Mini?
@@pambarth3183 I don't think I would tbh
which one should i choose between rg cube and this one?
As one person said, the novelty of the square screen may soon wear off
@@davidrhodes9997 yeah they may be right
I wish they'd refresh the arc-d with this chip.
Спасибо, было полезно.
Yes it is
Can this console run rpgxp games like pokemon hacks?
When ppl say the whole game cube and PlayStation 2 games is so many games to even consider in that context..
Is Princess Crown playable without the Beetle Core?
It's playable on the beetle core
Is it? Is it though?
It was 😢
I'm going to send Anbernic some more Emails.😊
I wish the cube had these upgrades. Is the plastic nicer than the cube?
It is better in plastic.

Is the Rog Ally with regular Z1 stronger than the Steam Deck? It's on sale for $350. I'm thinking about buying one or the other
nope, I like it and all, but the retroid pocket 5 stole it's thunder, still kinda like the 406v, but I'll wait on that one too
Its the exact same as the RG Cube but has a wide screen
It's a no from me. We had a similar situation last year: RP 4 or RG 556. The answer is Odin 2.
I have all 3, used rp4 pro most
I would buy it if it would have a stronger cpu.

It'd make sense at about $140 -150
I may just be seeing things, but the video looks slightly out of sync when you're on screen.
It's definitely out of sync by about 50 milliseconds.
I just bought 40XX H and this came out! Total B! But anyway, death, taxes, and Anbernic releasing new devices.

Won't be my next handheld. My next one will be Switch II or whatever they decide to call it. Switch U?
That's 3 more years from now
@suhtangwong I doubt it.
