    Chips are about the club choice, practice and confidence. Once you can match the loft of club and speed of the swing you can confidently strike the ball.
    A lot of practice is the only way to be confident. After that you need to trust yourself and hit the ball the way you practice and not be afraid of hitting it too hard and misshitting/hitting too soft.

  • @send-golf
    @send-golf 2 месяца назад

    Great advice. Actually the only advice most people need for chipping.
    Only thing I would argue is when you open the club face, you actually stop activating the bounce and you rely on the rear of the club, so if its deep (wide bottom) the wide bottom acts as bounce instead of the spine.
    This is my understanding from a club forging video I watched years ago, and reiterated by phil recently in a video with bryson.
    If you use this exact technique as he states, and you force the toe down (heel up) it will cause a higher, softer chip as well, Same mechanics but it yields a shot between a chip and a flop.

    • @CrankyBuddha
      @CrankyBuddha 2 месяца назад +1

      Well this just isnt true. If you're skulling the ball with your weight forward you ought to film yourself because youre probably either flipping or leaning back at impact. If you lean forward and dont flip there's literally no possible way for you to hit the ball with the leading edge the way that causes the 'line drives'

      Go to a practice green and chip with different clubs, wedge, 9, 8, 7.
      Each club gives you a different flight vs roll, and the lower clubs give more roll vs flight.
      I found a 9 or 8 is easier to hit consistently than my wedge/60 degree. Those clubs require a more exact hit on the ball.
      You can adjust the flight distance as needed and roll the ball to the hole.
      Chips with a short green run need a wedge but the longer run chips are easier with the lower # clubs because to me the shortest chip flight is easier to hit.
      Jack Nicklaus has a picture book called "Playing Lessons" I believe it's called that I used back in the early 1980's and he explains the loft vs run method.
      You can practice to judge the difference chipping a 9 iron with 4 feet flight and run vs chipping an 8 4 feet flight and run. The idea being a shorter flight is simpler/easier to master.
      You could even cut down a 7 iron as a chipping club.
      Good luck, this method helped me become a 6 h'cap in my young days.

    Ok but how do you spin flop it though ?

    • @NicoGolf.
      @NicoGolf. 3 месяца назад +1

      It’s a pretty common misconception that you have to flop to spin the ball. It’s about catching the most grooves as you can. Off of fairway grass, ball back of stance, slightly steep, hit ball first, nip a small divot out of the grass, boom you’ll spin. Rough grass, open the face some, hit ball first, and try to sweep the grooves through the ball (flop). Flops aren’t the way to spin it’s just one way to do it.

    • @mrsmartypants_1
      @mrsmartypants_1 3 месяца назад +1

      If you have to ask the absolutely last thing you should ever attempt is the flop shot. Just attempt a normal weight forward chip shot with your most lofted wedge. Then 5 years from now when you understand things better start practicing flop shots. This is the best advice you’ll ever get.

    I understand what he means but this doesn't work on all types of grass. And it doesn't work on all lies. Modern club design also favours a more release type of chipping. Even a toe down style. The modern way of chipping is playing draws rather than cuts. Even with an open club face, the move is more of a draw.

  • @touristguy87
    @touristguy87 2 месяца назад

    I would only chip a green side shot if I had to fly an obstruction and literally had no other choice. Your goal here first and foremost is to get the ball on the green. Short chips that don't even make the green or that stop just on the green are a disaster. You need to get the ball at least a makeable distance to the hole. Not leave it 20 feet short or some distance that you have no chance of making. Ideally pass the hole by no more than a foot or two.
    So that short chip is essentially throwing a stroke away.
