Meruem was indeed a main antagonist of the series but he was never a villain. He only appeared to be one because of how the story was building up to his birth and yet, the end result of his story was that he chose to deny his mission, the very reason why he was born, even after seeing how ruthless and devilish humanity is. When it came down to choosing, he did the exact opposite of what he was supposed to, a villain at heart would have made very different choices but he was never evil, that's the whole point of his character. He was born as a killer-ant who was supposed to murder all species in order to evolve and instead he declined his nature and purpose, becoming an admirer of humanity, his very prey, the moment he met someone even more extraordinary than himself. He let Welfin, Palm, Ikalgo, Knuckle and Meleoron live for no reason, being fully aware that they all wanted him dead, even while having amnesia and not being aware of his true personality at the time. Them not being a threat to him didn't mean a thing. Before he had formed his real personality, he would have murdered them in an instant. Villain my ass. If he lived he would had become God and turn the world into actual heaven, as he told Netero, but that would be a Disney movie ending and we all know that Togashi would never do that, thus Meruem had to die. Pretty sure Togashi cried himself out while writing/drawing that whole arc, as did we watching/reading it.

Kurapica has chosen similar, but struggles with maintaining that darkness.
What Chrollo embraces, Kurapica is unsure of using in spite of his dedication with want for vengeance.

Chrollo quite literally lost himself to protect those he held close to him; He was forced to. This shows how quickly doing this for others becomes a double-edged sword, which is what we see plenty of time in other animes but self-sacrifice is depicted way more positively for 90% of the Shounen battle series. This case spotlights how far you're willing to go for someone and if it's worth it. Admittedly this flew over my head but seeing how he was really similar to Gon as a kid, I'd say Togashi did a great job at conveying this dilemma that anyone can face at any given time.

No he wasn't forced to do anything he did 💀 His circumstances were FAR more pale than what he did. Biggest example is the kurta clan. Amazing analysis. I think the Troupe's flashback came at a perfect time too. Togashi linked the current arc's theme of "man ruining society" back to the Troupe, as society's treatment of Meteor City hardened their inhabitants and led to the formation of the Troupe. Not only that, Chrollo now strongly parrels his foil Kurapika, as he has taken the same role Sarsa's murders took in Kurpika's story while Kurapika resembles younger Chrollo. And now, just like Chrollo, Kurpika has nobody to keep on the straight and narrow as Gon and Killua are not present, and Leorio, despite being on the Black Whale, is absent. This is interesting as Kurapika is the only person stopping the boat from descending into chaos. Will he let what society took from him overwhelm him (Revenge on the Troupe and Tserriednich), or will his urges overwhelm him and lead to his destruction and the destruction of the micro-society on the Black Whale.

Kurapica has Melody, and his duty to Prince Woble, as well as the other members of the guards/Hunter's Association, including Leorio.
The negative examples of Hisoka, the Troupe, and the other princes are also a factor.
I think Kurapica WILL die, but so will the Troupe, and we've already seen multiple ways that Kurapica can be restored to life.

I don't know why you think Kurapika will die, i think he will find redemption in choosing life, and he will be able to let it all go and move on with his life. He is far better morally than young chrollo.

I really appreciate the many layers steeped on top of using the image of fan dubbing an anime as the backbone of this flashback. As mentioned in this great video, Chrollo’s ability to relate to multiple roles including the villain, the origin of the “troupe” in their name, standing on the broken stage, the meaning behind Ugovin’s requiem. Also… The light hearted nature that appeals to 100% of anime/manga fans (from those who either have to rely on fan or official dubs/subs/translations all the way to the native Japanese fans who still require manga speech bubbles and anime voice actors to deliver the material…. We all can relate to the power of being able to express a story in a medium we can all appreciate). This parallels the in-manga use of communication as a tool to create community (most of these kids are illiterate, some of them cannot even understand the same spoken language as each other… all bonded together over making something they can all enjoy together). This nearly magical thing they accidentally discovered that brought several fractured groups of children together doing something fun, something they all looked forward to, that gave them purpose and a goal, brought them hope perhaps for the first (and sadly maybe last) time escaping from the bleakness of their lives, and that they could spread the joy out to all the other rejected and abandoned children who also looked forward to every performance.
And then to take this beautiful moment and crush it. Not only did Sarasa, the sweetest and most innocent member, die. Not only did she die after going out alone to find more tapes for their project. But that her death was prolonged, terror-filled, gruesome all because a group of people also wanted to put on a show, film it and distribute it to others who looked forward to seeing these horrific “performances”. Not only did those few weeks of Chrollo directing and participating in making fan dubs allow him, despite his mind crushed state, to instantly see that Sarasa’s death was staged and that people stood around long enough to watch it and smoke multiple cigarettes, but tragically led him to the realization that an act he and his friends all treasured so much, the first activity they found that brought kids together and gave them hope, could also be twisted into this dark and painful display. This forever tainted that loving memory both of Sarasa and the group activity that brought them together to begin with. The troupe was born on that day, but it also died on that day.

    • @tng2022
      @tng2022 11 месяцев назад +9

your last sentence just broke my heart into pieces. yes they had nothing, and they realize the double edged nature of every single choice in life, the paradox of one thing being both good and evil, both pleasure and pain. but for me, i think there might be redemption for them. they still only live and die for each other, they have each other. that is the point. each of them has the rest of the troupe to mourn their deaths, to be partner in crimes, to be together no matter what the costs. i mean how many of lucky and happy people has their kind of friendships? ride or die, all or nothing togetherness? i think yes their lives were tragic, but at the same time they have something so pure together. nothing could tear them apart from each other, isn't that the beauty? of course the tragic part is why and how they are together that way. but to have 13 soulmates, people who are willing to stand by you no matter what, to die for you and with you, doing all that together completely and absolutely, through all of their lives without ever having to say I love you? or thank you? i think that's a special privilege only few of us can obtain in life.

i think he cries because he realize that he means as much to them as they mean to him. for him they are his family, everything he has. that's why he became what he becomes. he blames himself for Sarasa 's death. he will never EVER let that slide, he will get his revenge, and he will succeed. he wants JUSTICE, and he went too far of course, he took his family ( the troupe) with him on a path down the rabbit hole of darkness. i think it's beautiful in a way that none of the troupe has the intention to stop him. they all want the same thing. they could tell him No but each of the founding members would become hypocrite. you can't say : don't do it to your friend if you want to do it too. there i said it.

I feel as if - with the most recent chapters - Chrollo and Meruem are in many ways the thematic antithesis of one another. One is a human, shirking his humanity due to trauma and obligation, obsessed with deterministic ruminations, whilst the other is a non-human entity who not only possessed humanity within him, but came to encapsulate everything tragic and beautiful about the human condition, defying his predetermined path as only humans truly can.
Additionally, I adore the notion of Chrollo as an actor, being forced to immerse himself in his pre-orchastrated role to the point that he no longer has a defined sense of self. It honestly rather reminds me of a lot of elements present within Fate/Zero, specifically the conviction with which characters such as Kiritsugu and Saber integrate their myopic ideals into their core identity, spiraling into self-destruction due to a lack of the opportunity to introspect.

I never saw Chrollo as bland. His blank stare is one of a man that has no sense of optimism whatsoever. He is someone so shell-shocked from a life of brutal cruelty and suffering. Basically, he's someone who has become a psychotic monster from abuse. I've seen it happen to a few friends of mine who grew up in abusive or neglectful households. They either became timid nervous wrecks or have issues with social conduct that lead to lashing out violently and committing crimes. Doesn't justify anti-social acts but it does show where things originate.

    • @jacobesterson
      @jacobesterson Год назад +3

It doesn't have to go either of those ways. When your regular every-day human goes through "brutal cruelty," it either breaks or warps them. And when I say "warp," I don't necessarily mean for the worse. I don't think it's possible for anyone to go through that kind of trauma unaffected, but you do still have a choice. You can wallow in self pity and force your problems onto others, or you can bite down. It's easier said than done, but those are the two options.
Example: A heavily abusive father could result in a son who goes on to abuse his own kids, or it could result in a son who's entirely non-violent because he doesn't want to put his own children through the same trauma. In both cases we're talking about a person who was deeply affected by actions taken upon them that they had no control over. One is a pitiable monster, the other a beloved parent of good moral character.
It's important to remember that no matter what you've been through you still have moral agency as a human being, and that no amount of pain can justify evil. I'm not disagreeing with you incase that wasn't clear, you already briefly outlined that there are no real excuses. I just thought it was important to point out that you *can* come out on top of your traumas. You have to take your negative emotions and dedicate them towards something good, instead of using violence as an outlet.
Cruel origins often lead to the best and worst of humanity.

Before I start with anything, I would like to say, thankyou, you/re the reason Chrollo is my favourate character in HxH and why I'm so invested in how and where the story takes him. I don't have much to add to the truely wonderful job you've donw analysing his character, what a truly broken soul Togashi has created. I really think he has forgotten what he was or even if he remembers he hasn't looked at the memories in so long that it basically doesn't make a difference. I think the confliction between his past and what he's become won't break him, because maybe, it already has. Maybe when he found Sarasa's killer and went for the killing blow, that realisation came dashing to his mind and broke him so much he choose to forget it rather than enduring the pain of it. Also about the Kurta clan, I think after the video I'm fully convinced there's more to them than we were lead to believe. Maybe they _were_ the ones that started this hellish cycle and maybe not, maybe the girl that left the clan just died and the troupe thought the clan killed her, and killed them for something they didn't even do, regardess of the curcumstances, I think whatever happened , when comes together will be,... just, a piece of profound writting from Togashi. Alsoo btw I did think why exactly chrollo did the requem and I thought I kind of understood it something was missing, that somethinng being Uvogen wanting to be the greatest villain and that being a tribute for him for just amazing, thanks for the analysis

It would make more sense had they had anything to do with Sarasa or any other kidnapping.... it would have made way more sense to send a message of not to mess with meteor city had they done this to one of the previous culprits too instead of a non related party like the Kurta clan.

GAH. You always deliver the most scrumptious meals when you analyze H×H, especially Chrollo. I'm talking top-tier multi course fit for a king fine dining! ❤ Thank you for this wonderful piece!!
It's been my opinion for a while now that Kurapika and Chrollo were meant to be the results of a "fork in the path" with Chrollo showing the bad path you don't want to go down and Kurapika showing the good path. That's why I fully believe Kurapika will abandon his desire for revenge and manage to live a happy life and find joy again. Chrollo, though I do not believe he will die, he will end up alone in some form. Either because the entire troupe has been killed or most were killed, the remaining couldn't take it anymore, and everyone split up successfully killing the spider. I just have a feeling he will end up like Kurapika just before he met Gon and friends, very alone after having his family taken from him only with no more resolve for revenge. Is it a more fitting punishment for Chrollo to be alone after everything he did instead of outright killed for "justice?" I think being left alone with the memories would be torture. Especially for a boy like him who is so often in his own thoughts.
I think Hisoka is gonna die, though. :3 When he takes his final, final breath, I will be celebrating. I will be looking forward to the location of his grave, too, so that I may dance upon it.
On the topic of the Kurta massacre... it's my personal opinion that it was deserved and that potentially the Kurta were doing shady things. We've been fed this idea that they were such precious little cinnamon rolls hiding in the jungle for their safety for so long. I just have the vibe that's gonna be a false belief that will be shattered. Maybe it's what will be the catalyst for Kurapika abandoning revenge? The whole "don't take from us" warning just feels really... important than just being a calling card.
I definitely think the Kurta were paying for young girls to be snatched from Meteor City and brought to their clan to prevent the genetic collapse that comes from a community that isolates itself for too long. Young girls are easier to assimilate into the community, and coming from MC, they'd have no one looking for them or anyone to return to, so they'd just accept their new fate.

Wiki: "Nen is subjective but to what degree is unknown"
If your a HxH-Fan, maybe my rant will be of interest for you but dont read if you dont want to. Togashi refusing to tell us the basics is hurting Conjuration-Fans most and outright prevents any Games or Game-Mods (Fiy, Minecraft would be ideal to house a Nen-Mod) to be made. How is how much it costs to conjure something decided? I see 4 options: Mass, Complexity, Individual Feelings, Group-Feelings Aka Economy!
In Star Trek they literally have Conjuration-Nen but its called Repilcator and they even outright say about its function "Gold is one of the simpliest things so its easiest to make."
Does Nen work the same or is molecular Complexity irrelevant and its simple "The bigger something is, the
      more Energy it costs"?
Problem is, they're all exploitable. Exploitable af. But i guess im fine with them all except individual Feelings
cause that would mean i could just go to an Orphan and gain Mountains of Diamonds by telling him "Hey, kid
you just happen to have been born with Magic to make this thingy called Diamonds. It aint worth much but hey, if you
make me a bunch i give you Water and Bread. Well, Tapwater, lets not get greedy"

Some of the best stories have parallels and foreshadowing between the villains and the heroes, or side characters and the heroes.
Berserk has Guts' paths forward paralleled by both Destroyer Zodd and The Skull Knight, with Zodd showing the heartless monster he was going to become if he'd kept fighting without heed to the innocents he killed as he slaughtered demons, and The Skull Knight showing how Guts' obsession and goals can lead to him caring about bystanders, but having no one to personally care for, and being an obsessed soldier fighting a nigh eternal battle against his targets/enemies.
And my feeling is that Guts would/will find a third way, sharing his strength with others and gaining strength from their support, learning to wield his Berserker armor in a cold fury, controlled and yet raging so far beyond ordinary wrath that he's in full control
It's a terrifying state, but the ultimate form of being "Berserk".
And yeah, the parallel between Chrollo and Kurapica is where I'm going with this.
Also, Kurapica has his friends, and even his mission with Woble pushes him to the light.
