Just a minor heads up, something you might wanna add here. I think Naz was a CI, which is different from an actual cop. If he was a cop, his confrontation with Wei would have needed to be way more fleshed out imo.
aqua I think you missed a few points such as the wide variety of costumes you can obtain in a shop in night market, which add to the over the top ridiculousness ranging from a russian mafia suit to a yakuza costume in which wei is just in an underwear. I feel like this was worth pointing out as these outfits five you a variety of abilities ranging from vehicles to entirely different fighting styles. I'll leave the list of the outfits here for reference if anyone else wants to see them. High Roller Outfit (Available from High Roller Pack). Super-SWAT Tactical Uniform (Available from Police Protection Pack and SWAT Pack; reduces all damage taken by 50%). Shaolin Warrior (Available from Martial Arts Pack; Increases melee damage). GSP Black and White Training Outfits, GSP Headband Outfit (Available from GSP Pack; Replaces normal heavy attack with GSP's Flying Punch move and Increased Grappling Damage). Triad Enforcer Outfit (Available from Triad Enforcer Pack; increases striking damage and gains face points faster). Plainclothes Detective Outfit (Available from Deep Undercover Pack). Left 4 Dead Health Kit Shirt, Midnight Rider's T-Shirt, Ellis's Bullshifter Shirt, Original Portal T-Shirt, Team Fortress 2 Sandvich T-Shirt (Available from Valve T-Shirt Pack). Racing Jacket and Dragon Helmet (Available from Street Racer Pack, 15% damage reduction from gunfire). Lightning Warrior Outfit and Wing Chun Master (Available from Screen Legends Pack, the Wing Chun Master Outfit could slow down time during combat for easier counter). Jiang Shi Cap (Available from Nightmare in North Point, can be used in the main game upon completion of the DLC). Classic Black Fedora, Straw Hat, Cowboy Hat, Ghost Pig Mask (Available from Ghost Pig Pack). Rico Rodriguez Custom Oufit (allows player to perform action hijack on a vehicle from a greater distance); Sarif Industries Armor (reduces damage from firearms by 33%); Agent 47's Suit (reduces heat from police) The three outfits are available from the Square Enix Character Pack. Drunken Fist (Available from Drunken Fist Pack, it activates the drunken fist stance when the face meter is filled up). Yakuza Style (slows heat by 50%), Russian Mob Style (increases gun accuracy by 50%) and Mongrel Tribe Style (increases melee damage by 40%) tattoo (Available from Gangland Style Pack). Mixed Martial Arts Outfit and Muay Thai Outfit (Available from the Zodiac Tournament Pack, increase melee damage by 40% and activates new fighting moves). Vigilante (counters are easier to perform), Unknown Warrior (+40% Face experience earned) and Bronze Warrior (reduces melee damage taken by 60%) (Available from Movie Masters Pack). Sun Wukong (Gives you a staff that increases in size in combat) (Available from Monkey King Pack). SWAT Tactical Uniform (50% reduction in damage from gunfire); Crime Scene Investigator (Double Cop XP earned, but no Triad XP earned). Available from Law Enforcer Pack. Cultist Uniform (Can set a bomb in the car trunk, and counters are easier to perform. Available from Year of the Snake Pack, can be used in the main game upon completion of the Side Mission of DLC.)
As a True Crime fan, I eagerly grabbed this on opening day and played the heck out of it. Imagine my surprise when I got an audition for the DLC a couple of weeks later, especially since at the time I didn’t know United Front was located in Vancouver. Well these guys gave this kid a shot and I ended up getting my first video game voiceover credit playing the reanimated Vincent in Nightmare At Northpoint, and it must’ve turned out okay because they brought me back a few times in the other DLCs. Loving that other people dig this game as much as I do, and that there’s still new RUclips content coming out! Excellent channel, and excellent video essay. Long live United Front Games.

This game is probably best game ive ever played through. Saddest moment was when jackie died tho, im afraid to play this again through because of the wedding mission and jackies death. I enjoyed this game so much and i still do, if u havent played this i recommend 100%. Extremely underrated game.
if you loved this game and havent played it yet i would suggest trying the yakuza series they are fairly similar but yakuza has a bit more comedy in it
I know this vid probably wont get many views since no one rlly plays the game anymore but i still wanna thank you for making this because i love sleeping dogs
This game was fantastic, I fell in love with this game ever since I played the demo in Xbox360 and completed the game five times since then. Even the story was great. It's sad that the company that made this got closed.
Aqua, I just want you to know that the amount of YT channels i'm subscribed to is probably about less than 20. Very rarely can i ever find any original content that interests me. Most channels are just more of the same. However, I honestly believe ThatBoyAqua is something different. This channel is unique, entertaining, and informative. Keep doing what you do and thanks for sharing your work with us.
The knife mission got me screaming at my screen for several minutes lol. After a lot of retrys I found out that not using the knife is a lot more efficient, as you only gotta do one counter attack to desarm
I'm from Hong Kong and I constantly come back to this game throughout the years, though many aspects of this game weren't as real as they should, it reminds me of Hong Kong in the 00s to early 10s and I LOVE it!
I got the game free for 360. I always turned the game away because of the first mission but once I got into the open world I was hooked lol 😆 Greetings from the Carribbean bro 😁👍🏾🇭🇹
I’m loving how people still talk about this game. I only fell in love with this game last year and expected the fandom to be dead or slow, which is expected with most old/forgotten games I play, but to see that people are still showing their love to this game with videos warms my heart
These are the sort of videos I crave for. In the age of social media, you'd think it be easier for fun discussions to be had. But in reality, it's hard. I have been a watcher of this channel for a while now and you always impress me with these tightly edited and well thought out videos. I think you are brilliant. Each time I walk away from this channel I do really feel inspired to script write a video. I would attempt to explain why I love Sleeping Dogs but you did such a good job at examining the game. So instead, I will leave on a personal favourite moment I experienced. It was just after the wedding massacre and the cutscene with the handler. It was pouring down with rain and I was sitting in the car after delivering Uncle Po to the hospital and still reeling from the shootout which resulted in deaths. The song 'Soft Room' by Lorn started to play. I couldn't quite describe the feelings but it was an incredibly dark and sombre moment. I found myself just sitting in my car and before I knew it... the song was over. This stayed with me long after the game ended. Good work :)
The mission where you save Jackie from being buried alive really shook me to the core. How traumatized and angry Jackie is at the idea that he would have been left buried in the box until he died if not for Wei. "Like a dog, like an animal man!" One of my biggest fears is being buried alive and to save an ally from that fate in this game where main characters die left and right was a huge sigh of relief for me. I was sure the next few missions would involve getting Jackie out of the gang life or even have him join the HKPD as an informant... Instead you get the text from Jackie: "I need to show you something." Had to put the controller down.
Given that 1 minute of (quality) video takes 30-60 minutes to put together, there was hell of a lot of work went into this video. Hey, I never knew there was a bullet time mechanic in the game until you said. I started downloading it as the video started, it's just finishing up now. :-)
One of the greatest games I've ever played. This NEEDS a sequel. Wei Shen is such a badass and complex character, definitely want to explore more of his story in this world.
A game I still come back to every once in awhile after first playing it years ago. Everytime I get a new console which is every few years, or get back into gaming I always buy this game and play it to the end. And the story hits me every, single, time.
Funny enough, even though they are from different genres, I say sleeping dogs is much like the yakuza games. - asian-based organized crime theme - melee blawling focus - serious plot, goofy side content - has minigames, including karaoke - lots of over the top action sequences
yes but yakuza combat sucks compared to sleeping dogs imo. Also the cutscene are too long even though the story and cinematography is really well made. I wish they took inspiration from sleeping dogs.
A little more backstory: In 2006, the game was started as Black Lotus, and was supposed to have a female protagonist. Reportedly, Treyarch were in line to develop it, but Activision shifted them to COD pretty quickly ,and that's how the project ended up in the hands of United Front Games and then the rest of the events play out. P.S. Another fun fact: Before they named the main character Wei Shen, he was supposedly called Charles Ho. Later on, they made him a seperate character who had infiltrated the Sun on Yee before Wei, but got exposed and killed as mentioned by Winston.
I remember when sleeping dogs came out my older brother bought it for the 360 while I had a ps3 I was about 7 at the time I went to his room everyday while he was school and played sleeping dogs non stop I loved it I couldn't get enough of the game he eventually sold his 360 along with the game I purchased it 2nd hand 2 years later for ps3 and played it and a wave of nostalgia came back every year I go and replay it around Christmas just to bring back memories such an underrated classic one of my favourite games of all time.
For the 30 poison knife guys mission, I tried the throwing tactic a lot, but I also found that getting as many counter attacks in as possible also helped.
Revisited this game a little while ago, and I was really blown away by it playing it a second time. I really think it has held up pretty well (at least on PC) and didn't feel like I was replaying something at all. The main story felt a bit rushed/short, but it was definitely a game I am glad I went back and gave another try.
How and why does this 2012 game look better than Watch dogs Legion ? The lighting and reflections look crazy and there's camera work in cutscenes not just a boring shot/reverse shot ! Companies really got lazy lmao. Anyway great work as always, Thanks for the vid !
1:26:28 For the MMA outfit, the special fighting moves are just a replacement for the leg breaker and arm breaker moves for the default wei shen. For the Muay Thai outfit, it replaces the running spinning kick and a new grapple finisher (which is pretty cool imo)
This is such a great video. I haven’t seen another channel unpack the contents of this game while the recognition it deserves! I love how in-depth you went with analyzing the story and Jackie’s role. I found on my first play through that I didn’t really care much for Jackie at the start but as the game progressed I found of the side characters I was probably the most attached to him, making his death that much more tragic. I’m in the middle of my second Playthru right now and am having tons of fun!
Thank you for this video! I got mad love for this game I've played it 3 times through. A underrated gem for sure, such a great atmosphere story and charm to the game. I'll never forget this one
this is seriously one of the most underrated crime games ever everything from the undercover crime story to the characters and martial arts gameplay was freaking fantastic
I just finished this game after my bro recommended this to me countless times. I'm still floored by the ending. Can't believe I _slept_ on this game for the whole year I was suggested this game on and off! Also being aware that United Front was consisted of some ex-Volition and Rockstar Vancouver developers, I totally saw the little nods to Bully from the combat and even a little Saints Row. I realized that Jackie reminded me a LOT of Carlos.. They both suffered a fate just as terrible as one another.
$3,000 tuition for a semester? You really are Canadian. Anyhow, great video! I appreciated that you went into the background of the game's development. In this era where so many games come out broken or don't come out at all, it feels good seeing that sometimes devs make it over the developmental hurdles and manage to make a quality game without it getting cancelled or shipped too early.
Man, what a video. Played this game when I was a bit younger but I never delved into the story. Just finished along with the DLC before watching and I gotta say, you really nailed it on the head. I do wish this game could've done more, maybe be more but I'm content with what it is, where it's at. I'm okay with this game being a diamond in the rough, it'll solidify it's place in gaming history and make it standout from the rest due to it's unique history. I wish we could've gotten a sequel, but like I said this is more than enough for me. Hopefully this game gets popular again somehow in the future so people can really experience it for the first time as I did. Again, really great video and I love you :D
To be honest I don’t find the vaulting as big of an issue as you mentioned, because I feel like most cover shooters are static (for lack of a better word), and the vaulting and bullet time midigate that, as for the difficulty, it’s cover shooting, of course it’s easy.
One thing I like about Sleeping Dogs is that the traditional actors that did voices in the game are playing the same character they would play if it was a film/series.
This game captures the Chinese culture perfectly. The dialogues in Cantonese, random npc dialogues, and side missions bears a tremendous amount of similarity of the Chinese thinking/ philosophy in real life. I found myself soaking more deeply into the storyline since I have experienced the same thing from the storytelling of the game. For instance, Jackie's role in the game depicts the Chinese youth's glorification of the underworld and the need for collectiveness, ended up regretting his naivety and dying because of it.
I remember getting this from the Xbox Live Gold games. I never really got into it and deleted it since I only had 16gb usable storage. It’s crazy how good it looked on the 360, even today.
This game was my childhood, watching my older brother play this while I watched, I may not have grown up with Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, but this game's depiction of Hong Kong seemed so faithful to me it was amazing to 10 year old me
It's a general technology issue. My fave file for AC 1 got corrupted on my PC as well. I think I used up all my luck when I played AC Unity on launch and saw only 1 bug. Now my PS4 Pro drops frames on Fall Guys. As someone whose job is dependant on technology, the fact that technology always breaks on me is hilarious.
Genuinely one of my favourite games released in the 2010's. But my gargantuan criticism is that it is way too goddamn easy. I didn't even know health shrines gave you a permenant health upgrade until I'd finished the main story. I also didn't know you could throw weapons until I watched this video, even after 120+ hours on the game. It also made the outfit bonuses that reduced damagd kind of just annoying to have, since I could already clean house incredibly easily. Also the amount of gunplay was unbeliecably annoying. It's not fun at all. Just let me beat dudes with a fish again
I remember being torn between getting this and Yakuza 0 when I got my PS4. I got this and while I do like the game, I preferred Yakuza when I got it 😅 They seemed fairly similar to me at the time, I dunno why 😂
Woah, I just busted out my old Xbox 360 to play this game again after probably 6 years. Never really watched anything on this game until now, I'm glad so many people love this game as much as I do. One of my favorite games ever for sure.
I couldn't care less about this game when it first came out, some time later I was REALLY bored so I decided to give it a try. Turned out to be surprisingly good with a great story and some really emotional moments
Actually, you do find Jackie and Winston’s ghost in the DLC After completing the story, return to the Golden Koi and head up to the kitchen, you’ll find your old friends up there Although they disappear when you get close
Crazy I played 2 different yakuza games years ago and just played through this for the first time ever a week ago. And IMO I like this waaaaaay more than yakuza series. It was just repetitive boring Nd not at all what I was expecting.

Maybe play this game on your channel after Mafia 2 DE?
This game is probably best game ive ever played through. Saddest moment was when jackie died tho, im afraid to play this again through because of the wedding mission and jackies death. I enjoyed this game so much and i still do, if u havent played this i recommend 100%. Extremely underrated game.
if you loved this game and havent played it yet i would suggest trying the yakuza series they are fairly similar but yakuza has a bit more comedy in it
@@Heldgalaxy Yakuza 2 on ps2 is very cool
A long time ago, I used to believe that Watch Dogs was a sequel to Sleeping Dogs lol
Don’t worry, me too😭
Reminds me of zanny playing dl2 "The sequel to Detroit become human, idfk how they got to zombies" or something like that
#metoo
I know this vid probably wont get many views since no one rlly plays the game anymore but i still wanna thank you for making this because i love sleeping dogs
100k views for a channel with 74k subs as of right now. Not bad.
250,000 views later.
314k views right now lol seems like this video has become popular, Mystic x
I still play this game to this day and I just love the way how the story goes every time. This game is truly a hidden gem honestly.
This game was fantastic, I fell in love with this game ever since I played the demo in Xbox360 and completed the game five times since then. Even the story was great. It's sad that the company that made this got closed.
I love replaying this game every few years just because I love the story and gameplay, the cinematics, amazing cutscenes just everything, loved it
Aqua, I just want you to know that the amount of YT channels i'm subscribed to is probably about less than 20. Very rarely can i ever find any original content that interests me. Most channels are just more of the same. However, I honestly believe ThatBoyAqua is something different. This channel is unique, entertaining, and informative. Keep doing what you do and thanks for sharing your work with us.
Thank you so much this comment made my day!
@@ThatBoyAqua No problem dude. Glad i could make a positive impact for you.
@@ThatBoyAqua he couldn't have said it any better, this channels brilliant
The knife mission got me screaming at my screen for several minutes lol. After a lot of retrys I found out that not using the knife is a lot more efficient, as you only gotta do one counter attack to desarm
It’s been 9 years man time flies
Dude this games brings so much memories I also still remember doing the first mission it was bad ass only og’s played this on Xbox 360
I'm from Hong Kong and I constantly come back to this game throughout the years, though many aspects of this game weren't as real as they should, it reminds me of Hong Kong in the 00s to early 10s and I LOVE it!
I've always wanted to visit. It's my dream vacation. I don't know if it's safe anymore though...
I got the game free for 360. I always turned the game away because of the first mission but once I got into the open world I was hooked lol 😆
Greetings from the Carribbean bro 😁👍🏾🇭🇹
I’m loving how people still talk about this game. I only fell in love with this game last year and expected the fandom to be dead or slow, which is expected with most old/forgotten games I play, but to see that people are still showing their love to this game with videos warms my heart
You just described the Insurgency Modern Infantry Combat community.
Dead AND slow.
I loved this game when I was a little kid, I’m pretty sure it was the game that helped start my crippling video game addiction.
"Like a dog, like an animal man!"
One of my biggest fears is being buried alive and to save an ally from that fate in this game where main characters die left and right was a huge sigh of relief for me.
I was sure the next few missions would involve getting Jackie out of the gang life or even have him join the HKPD as an informant...
Instead you get the text from Jackie: "I need to show you something."
Had to put the controller down.
Sleeping dogs was my very first platinum trophy I’ve ever gotten back on my ps3
Love this retrospective! It's one of my favorite games of all time. So underrated, I wish it was more popular. Great work on the video
I’m excited to watch this. Been thinking about going back to sleeping dogs.
I remember watching my older brother play this when I was little. I loved the driving and combat. He was really good at fighting
Currently trying to platinum the game on my PS5. What a great game.
Given that 1 minute of (quality) video takes 30-60 minutes to put together, there was hell of a lot of work went into this video.
Hey, I never knew there was a bullet time mechanic in the game until you said. I started downloading it as the video started, it's just finishing up now. :-)
A gem that didn't get the recognition it deserved. Hope they make a sequel one day
One of the greatest games I've ever played. This NEEDS a sequel. Wei Shen is such a badass and complex character, definitely want to explore more of his story in this world.
This guy is a savage🤣🤣
He K.o'd the f*CK out of Tiffany. Then still ran her over.🤣🤣🤣

I was gonna watch it but I had a 2-hour talk with my sister, which I liked. I'll watch it soon.
Im mostly not a big fan of stories in games, but this hit it with me
Felt like a real story for adults
No corny jokes etc
35:03 that flick wasn’t aim assist it was to divert your attention to the explosion to show you where to go
Thank you for covering my favorite game of all time. It’s sad many haven’t played this game, they are truly missing out.
I still go back and play this game. Awesome game
It's nice to see how much effort Aqua puts into his video's
A game I still come back to every once in awhile after first playing it years ago. Everytime I get a new console which is every few years, or get back into gaming I always buy this game and play it to the end. And the story hits me every, single, time.
sleeping dogs hand to hand combat is more yakuza.
id say its a great blend of yakuza 5 and GTA
I'd say more Arkham Style combat with a mixture of Yakuza
Insane how old this game is already, I feel like it came out a few weeks ago.
Funny enough, even though they are from different genres, I say sleeping dogs is much like the yakuza games.
- asian-based organized crime theme
- melee blawling focus
- serious plot, goofy side content
- has minigames, including karaoke
- lots of over the top action sequences
Yea but Yakuza us kinda hard
yes but yakuza combat sucks compared to sleeping dogs imo. Also the cutscene are too long even though the story and cinematography is really well made.
I wish they took inspiration from sleeping dogs.
My favorite part about the rat scene is that both ming and wei are correct, wei just talked faster and more convincingly under extreme pressure.
This game was fucking awesome. A gem, for sure. I come back to it every year.
Still playing the game every year or two. Really great memories.
I always think about Sleeping Dogs, as soon as I've finished any other game it's all I can think about
For the 30 poison knife guys mission, I tried the throwing tactic a lot, but I also found that getting as many counter attacks in as possible also helped.
Revisited this game a little while ago, and I was really blown away by it playing it a second time. I really think it has held up pretty well (at least on PC) and didn't feel like I was replaying something at all. The main story felt a bit rushed/short, but it was definitely a game I am glad I went back and gave another try.
The dialogue during missions were so real and enjoyable
You convinced me,I just bought sleeping dogs
(Edit) I played it for a few good hours and I can say that is worth the dollars
As someone who had never played this game before until this year 10/10 experience
How and why does this 2012 game look better than Watch dogs Legion ? The lighting and reflections look crazy and there's camera work in cutscenes not just a boring shot/reverse shot ! Companies really got lazy lmao. Anyway great work as always, Thanks for the vid !
agreed!
One of my all time favorite open world games. I need to finish this gem.

I've played this games story so many times still find something new I didn't see before every single time I play it
Even with all it's issues, it is a really enjoyable game. Nice vid.
1:26:28 For the MMA outfit, the special fighting moves are just a replacement for the leg breaker and arm breaker moves for the default wei shen. For the Muay Thai outfit, it replaces the running spinning kick and a new grapple finisher (which is pretty cool imo)
Still a classic, playable WHENEVER. I've played through at least 3 times hahaha
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you! Also, love the Mac profile picture 💙 R.I.P.
this is seriously one of the most underrated crime games ever
everything from the undercover crime story to the characters and martial arts gameplay was freaking fantastic

Dude I never forget to like these vids
Such long, descriptive and in-depth videos are what I live for
Keep up the good work man
2:10 Goddamn I was searching for this game for ages. I always thought it was a fever dream from the ads 🤣
I remember getting this from the Xbox Live Gold games. I never really got into it and deleted it since I only had 16gb usable storage. It’s crazy how good it looked on the 360, even today.
Is this where I watch the dogs?
No this is where you put the dogs to sleep, watch dogs is the one where you watch the dogs
@@DaryllAsh and then there’s naughty dog
This game was my childhood, watching my older brother play this while I watched, I may not have grown up with Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, but this game's depiction of Hong Kong seemed so faithful to me it was amazing to 10 year old me
That tournament dlc on the island actually gave me a pretty good challenge on the final fights, absolutely love this game.
This game, True Crime series, and that game series with the dog as your sidekick were super underrated.
I like how Aqua's ps4 just sucking is a a running issue on his game reviews
It's a general technology issue. My fave file for AC 1 got corrupted on my PC as well. I think I used up all my luck when I played AC Unity on launch and saw only 1 bug. Now my PS4 Pro drops frames on Fall Guys. As someone whose job is dependant on technology, the fact that technology always breaks on me is hilarious.
One of my favourite games ever
One of the best games ever made.
I love this game so much
Genuinely one of my favourite games released in the 2010's.
This is amazing. One of my favorite games ever. Thank you for giving it just care.
This game deserves better. A gamer has not eaten a pork bun, is not a true gamer.
This deserves a major revamp or a sequel. I absolutely loved this game and the story.
I remember being torn between getting this and Yakuza 0 when I got my PS4. I got this and while I do like the game, I preferred Yakuza when I got it 😅
They seemed fairly similar to me at the time, I dunno why 😂
Woah, I just busted out my old Xbox 360 to play this game again after probably 6 years. Never really watched anything on this game until now, I'm glad so many people love this game as much as I do. One of my favorite games ever for sure.
Really enjoyed this segment, can you cover enslaved odyssey to the west; a underrated game I believe deserves a sequel
I havnt played this in forever. It looks better than I remember. I probably wasn't old enough to appreciate it
I couldn't care less about this game when it first came out, some time later I was REALLY bored so I decided to give it a try. Turned out to be surprisingly good with a great story and some really emotional moments
Actually, you do find Jackie and Winston’s ghost in the DLC
After completing the story, return to the Golden Koi and head up to the kitchen, you’ll find your old friends up there
Although they disappear when you get close
You should play yakuza if you love sleeping dogs
Crazy I played 2 different yakuza games years ago and just played through this for the first time ever a week ago. And IMO I like this waaaaaay more than yakuza series. It was just repetitive boring Nd not at all what I was expecting.
Still love this game all these years later. I play it through like once a year
