My buddy bought me this game. He said "It's just like Yakuza, but took place in Hong Kong and has little difference". While it is true that Sleeping Dogs has simmilarities with Yakuza series, Sleeping Dogs has its own unique things that make it special for me. Also Wei has some hardest line I ever heard. "Jackie this watch is fake as fuck"
I recently bought all the Yakuza games to get into. I've never played them before Also, Wei had some great one liners, that's one of the best ones I agree lol
I love both games but i perfer the yakuza games a bit more since I always appreciate a beat em up then gta with beat em up mechanics. Though sleeping dogs is absolutely awesome since i play through the game twice while barely playing through gta.@MrHammers

I'll never forget my first playthrough of this game man. I was on the EDGE OF MY SEAT almost the entire time wondering how it all was going to end without Wei ending up either dead or in jail lol. And they tied it all together in a pretty believable way. I still go back and play through this game about once a year. It just hits a sweet spot for me. ❤
This game got me into Bonobo and Ninja Tune records. Very underrated soundtrack that went extremely well with its world, and didn’t feel tacked on for the sake of just having some music. Ramping off any car in a bike never gets old. Really great game. I remember following it when it was still a True Crime game and was saddened when cancelled, happy when picked back up and blown away by the final product.
I never knew it had such a tumultuous development. It always felt like a very professional and complete game to me. Amazing that the developers managed to pull it off with all the chaos around them.
Agreed. It baffles me that Activision ever cancelled this project, if it was mostly complete at the time they saw this game and thought it'd be better to cancel than release. Thank goodness for Square buying the project

They tried to release another title for a masterpiece way too soon and also changed the formula. Totally irresponsible by the developers, which ultimately killed the franchise. Shenmue 3 didn't rush anything in terms of time, but too many changes lost what made fans like that franchise. If Sleeping Dogs 2 doesn't kill what we like about Sleeping Dogs 1, it might not suck.
You do all sandbox games a major disservice by putting the label, "GTA clone" onto them. It's a major reason why the genre is in the state that it has been in for over a decade. Too many people use that label to write off the games because they're not GTA.
It's a fun game with great characters, graphics, music and Hong Kong was a new setting for me to explore in a opened world game when it was here in 2012. Before it was released there were a lot of great live action sort movies or ads of Sleeping Dogs that were pretty amazing as well. Here's hoping for a Sequel in the future.
One of my joys in life is replaying this game every couple of years to see if it still is as good as a remember and it almost always being better. An actual gem.
Another phenomenal video from you I’d love to see more long form videos in between the shorter games you normally cover. My only gripe is that you skipped over when Jackie killed the low level drug dealer it caused him to fully second guess gang life and want to get out but that’s when he got gutted like a fish. The added context of him finally wanting to get out only to never get that chance is what made it hit harder for me personally.

I do agree with the idea Wei would’ve tried to save Jackie from the gang lifestyle once his original mission was over it’s just such a realistic thing of that lifestyle to not get the “Story Book ending”. Especially since from the start Jackie was like a little brother to us.
I’ll add another comment…. For it’s era, this is a game you can tell the creators poured their hearts out in this game JUST like Red Dead 2. This game is so much fun to play in 2023 and that’s saying something…. I urge everyone to play this game.
Loved the video bro! Great review! I bought my dad a PS4 for his birthday a couple of years ago and I got him Sleeping Dogs to play on it (we both loved the True Crime series). He instantly got hooked into it and it’s become one of his favorite games

i miss playing this game, i grew up with this game. After my rlly old pc broke, and i got an xbox one after it released i was so happy to be able to get Sleeping Dogs again. even though that was years ago, i still love the memories of sleeping dogs
I used to play the hell out of this game, back to back. The way they pay homage / references to movies I grew up with made me love it even more, the fighting, atmosphere, music, I never was bored. I used to jump of the motorcycles purposefully so I could ragdoll through the city after I completed the game, I used to complete it a lot, probably one of the only games that I 100% completed. The DLCs/Add-ons were pretty cool too, sad they cancelled the second one. Really unfair. Would’ve been awesome driving around Hong Kong with your friend / other players fighting about.
I beat this game maybe like a year ago, year and a half ago, I was gonna stream this game yesterday, and I said nah ill do watch dogs 2 instead, and now you're really making me regret my decision, this game is soooo good, it's a phenomenal game and not enough people have played it, not enough people that I've talked to anyway
I played this on release and loved it - and recently it was insanely cheap on a Steam sale so I picked it up again. The main difference... I live in Hong Kong now. When I first started it up, the thing that struck me was that it is literally nothing like Hong Kong, at all, and is missing so many things I would describe as 'iconic'. This really took me out of the experience for a while - there's no MTR, the districts make no sense, the shape of HK island is totally insane, the entire Kowloon and NT are missing... But then it was made for much less powerful consoles, to be played by people who've never visited Hong Kong. However, one thing that is absolutely incredible is the vibe. The environment is so, so accurate. It -feels- like HK. I got into it so fast that I've just absolutely been sucked in, and enjoying the atmosphere. The biggest take away though, I would say is that it's not really set in Hong Kong - it's set in Hong Kong Cinema's Hong Kong. And when looked at through that lens, it is absolutely perfect. I love it. The city is the perfect set-dressing and environment, and suddenly you're in the middle of a Hong Kong movie. I wish there was any chance of a sequel - taking advantage of all the extra power on offer by newer consoles and PCs, to see Hong Kong as it REALLY is. Although with about 10% of the traffic, otherwise you'd never get anywhere... Nobody in a hurry drives in HK 😂😂
This game is so fucking good, I remember playing it in like 2013-14 after picking it up at a game store not knowing what to expect. It blew my mind and I still consider it one of the most enjoyable and most well written games in that era, the wedding scene is still vivid in my memory as the moment shit started to get real. It's sad that this would-be series is dead but I'm hoping that somebody gets the rights to the game, seeing it's resurgence in popularity, and makes a sequel.

Honestly one of the best action game I've ever played from the Xbox 360 era. It's definitely not a masterpiece when it comes to gameplay, but the story is definitely solid and oh, the open world design is definitely doing its justice to Sleeping Dogs when you're not taking it too seriously. The fact that you can ran over hundreds of people on your 'Made in China' Lamborghini and the cops wouldn't be able to catch you anyway is what cemented this game as the best open-world action game for me so far*

Usually they are run by a company, which has made contract with the government. The red minibuses do not need to run on a fixed route. If they wish to join a popular route or depart from a popular terminal, they might need to pay the so-called "enter route fee" to the triad. As a local, I was surprised when I played the minibus mission a decade ago. Really admire that the production team had some deep study into Hong Kong culture. The only flaw is that the minibus tagged "Hang Hou Village" in reality goes between the village and HKUST, both are not located on the Hong Kong island side.
I remember playing and completing every single thing in this masterpiece of a game. Its like you are playing as Bruce Lee in a Hong Kong style GTA game, and you rely more on hand to hand combat than firearms. but it also offers much more. its one of the best open world games, and definitely the best martial arts game, but sadly it didnt get the recognition it deserved

The fighting is so entertaining. It reminds me of the combat in the ac games and Batman. Although in Batman he snaps to them it still feels like a rush and I love it.

Yes, it has the most live open world ever, and the combat system is gorgeous. It has many limits due to his dev problems and the story turns at the end but it rocks. A must play.
It’s on sale definitive edition rn on micro store for $5. I bought it , haven’t played since the original on the 360, I love it , it’s still just as great.
One of the biggest reason why I love Wei as a character, is we all know he's a cop and if the situation calls for it, he will follow the letter of the law. BUT, if you're irredeemable, or just overall a piece of shit, he will definitely introduce you to a painful death.
This was one of the games I got for a week on rental as a kid. Such a fun game, even after beating it I started a new game just to drive around and take in the setting. So ridiculously detailed even compared to some modern games
Sleeping Dogs still looks good all these years. It’s a shame that it didn’t get that much attention nor it got that much popularity due to it being overshadowed by both GTA and Red Dead Redemption. This came out on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the graphics still looks so good here.
Have a lot of fond memories playing this with my friends who were still in High School after I myself graduated. I still remember this one instance I sent a lamp post spinning like a top down the street by accident and we all watched it line up and haymaker some guy crossing the street and the boys must have laughed for a good 5 minutes lol. Also worth mentioning it's ties to True Crime before becoming it's own IP, I *SWEAR* Activision had a promo website declaring True Crime 3 was going to take place in Mexico City a few months after True Crime: New York City floundered on launch. Glad we got Sleeping Dogs instead but I honestly would love to see Mexico City become an Open World Location in a game. Hell, Total Overdose 2 was going to have it as a location before it too got canned.
Sleeping Dogs is what everyone thought Yakuza would be. The , when we finally got something like that, people couldn’t care less. This game kicked ass.
Finished this game about 3 times. What I always do is getting the Ip Man costume so I can unlock and unleashed Wing Chun combo fighting style on the enemies.. loved the moves so much 😂😂😂
I grabbed this on a steam sale expecting nothing but a throwaway GTA clone and I ended up LOVING this game. A surprisingly well written story, awesome open world, really nice graphics for it's time, excellent martial arts melee combat, fun slow mo shootouts, fast arcadey responsive driving, etc.. etc.. it's just pure old school open world fun minus the bloat and pretentiousness of modern games. Cult classic for a reason!
I still think Jet Li: Rise to Honor has the best fighting system in any game ever made. Would love to see you cover that game. But this game is a solid second place for me and I find myself coming back to revisit this every few years ever since I bought back in the day. Wei Shen is Goated

Oh man, I have always wanted to play this game. It's been on my radar for a long, long time. Basically in like 2010 My Xbox died, my computer was fastly becoming a potato and life was becoming very time consuming. I finally got a used PS4 in 2018 and a gaming PC in 2021 so there's a large stretch of games I missed out on. Good thing is most of the games I've wanted to play are now cheap and I'm going to keep an eye out for this on sale.
ive played the definitive edition of this game at least 5 times and i have never once seen where to activate the expansion pack of being a regular cop investigating bombs? Also i gotta say i agree with everything said in this video, everything that was good was good, alright was alright. Like, yea this video was a perfect summary of the kind of game this was. The only thing is that i think you neglected to tell people about the bonsues of doing things like massage, tea, eating, etc. its like taking chems in fallout games its a drastic change that makes the game much easier and more fluid and fun since you are more "powerful" while also adding into the feeling of life-siming it a bit with going out of your way down the street to get a m,assage outside of your home. then down the alley for some tea, down the block for a pork bun, etc. just felt nice to be exploring and partaking in the world and its surroundings while gaining useful bonuses that was honestly probably one of my favorite things about this game was that doing these things had a useful effect other than flair, wasnt difficult to get, gave you something to spend money on, let you appreciate the world around you etc. while serving as a mini break between missions like one would in real life.
I remember playing this on release. We got it because we weren't allowed to play gta because of nudity. Despite that, this game sits in my top 5 games because of how well it does in all aspects of game design.
Replayed it three month ago, it really was a joy to play... for a first game that had so much development hell, it ended up being really good... I wish we could have seen a proper sequel, so much potential...

Id say definitely stream this one after WD2 haha. It's a great time, and it doesn't take super long to beat

The biggest take away though, I would say is that it's not really set in Hong Kong - it's set in Hong Kong Cinema's Hong Kong. And when looked at through that lens, it is absolutely perfect. I love it.
The city is the perfect set-dressing and environment, and suddenly you're in the middle of a Hong Kong movie.
I wish there was any chance of a sequel - taking advantage of all the extra power on offer by newer consoles and PCs, to see Hong Kong as it REALLY is. Although with about 10% of the traffic, otherwise you'd never get anywhere... Nobody in a hurry drives in HK 😂😂
This game is so fucking good, I remember playing it in like 2013-14 after picking it up at a game store not knowing what to expect. It blew my mind and I still consider it one of the most enjoyable and most well written games in that era, the wedding scene is still vivid in my memory as the moment shit started to get real. It's sad that this would-be series is dead but I'm hoping that somebody gets the rights to the game, seeing it's resurgence in popularity, and makes a sequel.

Honestly one of the best action game I've ever played from the Xbox 360 era. It's definitely not a masterpiece when it comes to gameplay, but the story is definitely solid and oh, the open world design is definitely doing its justice to Sleeping Dogs when you're not taking it too seriously. The fact that you can ran over hundreds of people on your 'Made in China' Lamborghini and the cops wouldn't be able to catch you anyway is what cemented this game as the best open-world action game for me so far*

This is quite true. There are two types of minibuses in Hong Kong. The green minibuses can only go on a fixed route. Usually they are run by a company, which has made contract with the government. The red minibuses do not need to run on a fixed route. If they wish to join a popular route or depart from a popular terminal, they might need to pay the so-called "enter route fee" to the triad. As a local, I was surprised when I played the minibus mission a decade ago. Really admire that the production team had some deep study into Hong Kong culture. The only flaw is that the minibus tagged "Hang Hou Village" in reality goes between the village and HKUST, both are not located on the Hong Kong island side.
Probably one of if not the most immersive open world game. Only game that comes close is probably Assasin's Creed 2 with it's depiction of Italy.

I remember playing and completing every single thing in this masterpiece of a game. Its like you are playing as Bruce Lee in a Hong Kong style GTA game, and you rely more on hand to hand combat than firearms. but it also offers much more. its one of the best open world games, and definitely the best martial arts game, but sadly it didnt get the recognition it deserved

The fighting is so entertaining. It reminds me of the combat in the ac games and Batman. Although in Batman he snaps to them it still feels like a rush and I love it.
Sleeping Dogs is my favorite overlooked game, finished it twice and the whole ambient is super well made, when it launched I could not wait to play it and I do not get why most people don't give it attention

Yes, it has the most live open world ever, and the combat system is gorgeous. It has many limits due to his dev problems and the story turns at the end but it rocks. A must play.

One of the biggest reason why I love Wei as a character, is we all know he's a cop and if the situation calls for it, he will follow the letter of the law. BUT, if you're irredeemable, or just overall a piece of shit, he will definitely introduce you to a painful death.

This was one of the games I got for a week on rental as a kid. Such a fun game, even after beating it I started a new game just to drive around and take in the setting. So ridiculously detailed even compared to some modern games
Its crazy how they changed the name from “True crime:Hong Kong, I remember being really young and excited until they changed it to sleeping dogs.
Sleeping Dogs still looks good all these years. It’s a shame that it didn’t get that much attention nor it got that much popularity due to it being overshadowed by both GTA and Red Dead Redemption. This came out on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the graphics still looks so good here.
Have a lot of fond memories playing this with my friends who were still in High School after I myself graduated. I still remember this one instance I sent a lamp post spinning like a top down the street by accident and we all watched it line up and haymaker some guy crossing the street and the boys must have laughed for a good 5 minutes lol.
Also worth mentioning it's ties to True Crime before becoming it's own IP, I *SWEAR* Activision had a promo website declaring True Crime 3 was going to take place in Mexico City a few months after True Crime: New York City floundered on launch. Glad we got Sleeping Dogs instead but I honestly would love to see Mexico City become an Open World Location in a game. Hell, Total Overdose 2 was going to have it as a location before it too got canned.

Finished this game about 3 times. What I always do is getting the Ip Man costume so I can unlock and unleashed Wing Chun combo fighting style on the enemies.. loved the moves so much 😂😂😂

I grabbed this on a steam sale expecting nothing but a throwaway GTA clone and I ended up LOVING this game. A surprisingly well written story, awesome open world, really nice graphics for it's time, excellent martial arts melee combat, fun slow mo shootouts, fast arcadey responsive driving, etc.. etc.. it's just pure old school open world fun minus the bloat and pretentiousness of modern games. Cult classic for a reason!
I still think Jet Li: Rise to Honor has the best fighting system in any game ever made. Would love to see you cover that game. But this game is a solid second place for me and I find myself coming back to revisit this every few years ever since I bought back in the day. Wei Shen is Goated

Oh man, I have always wanted to play this game. It's been on my radar for a long, long time. Basically in like 2010 My Xbox died, my computer was fastly becoming a potato and life was becoming very time consuming. I finally got a used PS4 in 2018 and a gaming PC in 2021 so there's a large stretch of games I missed out on. Good thing is most of the games I've wanted to play are now cheap and I'm going to keep an eye out for this on sale.

ive played the definitive edition of this game at least 5 times and i have never once seen where to activate the expansion pack of being a regular cop investigating bombs? Also i gotta say i agree with everything said in this video, everything that was good was good, alright was alright. Like, yea this video was a perfect summary of the kind of game this was. The only thing is that i think you neglected to tell people about the bonsues of doing things like massage, tea, eating, etc. its like taking chems in fallout games its a drastic change that makes the game much easier and more fluid and fun since you are more "powerful" while also adding into the feeling of life-siming it a bit with going out of your way down the street to get a m,assage outside of your home. then down the alley for some tea, down the block for a pork bun, etc. just felt nice to be exploring and partaking in the world and its surroundings while gaining useful bonuses that was honestly probably one of my favorite things about this game was that doing these things had a useful effect other than flair, wasnt difficult to get, gave you something to spend money on, let you appreciate the world around you etc. while serving as a mini break between missions like one would in real life.

I have never revisited a GTA game after the newest entry, Sleeping Dogs was different, ran it back on PS3,ps4,ps5 ,PC and Xbox, if they release on switch, it’s a day one purchase. 9/10, just wanted a little better gunplay, even with that , this game was amazing!
