This was a game I knew nothing about. None of the hype, none of the trailers, none of the controversy and not a single review. Yes I was in my senior year and living under a rock with nothing but classwork on my mind just to keep my head up. Frankly, this was one of the most enjoyable experiences I had in that extremely tough year. I think this shows how negative mindsets going into games kinda dooms the experience before you even boot the game up.
I had been bitten by so many bad games, I never thought the finished game would look as good as the initial trailer anyway, so I wasn't disappointed or surprised.
@@PinkFloydFan74 I didnt even know the trailer thing nor what people think about this game until this year bruh... I have been playing this game since 2013-2014
After all these years I still find it so fucking hilarious when you're in an intense action sequence and your hud profiles some random enemy like "Diagnosed with STD"
If there's something I really appreciate, it's a feature added in the Living City mod, where Aiden can choose to DONATE money to people in need via hacking it into their bank accounts. It adds a kindness to him that I wish was in the original game.
Wait, THERE'S MODS? I'd hate to give Ubisoft any more money than absolutely necessary (they have a few good releases that I occasionally will buy) but I NEED TO SEE THIS MOD!
@@I_Cunt_Spell Uh yeah, I have the game on PS3. Big oof. I don't know if I want the PC version because my hard drive is getting full, but I may check it out! Hopefully I'll get a call from a potential employer with good news today, so I'll make some money. Buy an unnecessarily large SSD for like $2000 or some insane shit like that, then I'll never worry about storage ever again!
Pubius Caeser I’ve replayed it 4 times for the story purposes alone. Cozy is the perfect word to describe and its the only PS4 disc I don’t ever plan on trading in.
I'm glad someone else liked Aiden. I remember hearing people complain that he wasn't a good hero, or a good person, and I was here like "Am I taking crazy pills or was that never the point?" Like, you're a glorified gunman who has hacker abilities and you're executing your justice how you see fit, solely for yourself. If you benefit others in the meanwhile? Cool. But Aiden was in it for revenge. Nothing else. And that's a cool concept for a character in an industry where a lot of characters are relative blank slate good guys for you to better self-insert into.
I wish people would read this damn comment, that’s exactly the point, he was never meant to be a likeable character, just an interesting one, the characters we were supposed to get attached to, we did, and most of them are dead, which was the whole fucking point in the end, so Ubisoft did their jobs correctly.
Its easy to make a moralisticly pure character *cough* link *cough*, but to make a vigilante that does thing for his ownself and likeable for the player is hard
The ending where you decide Maurice's fate is even more powerful after you listen to his voice memos throughout the game and hear his side of the story
Thank you for crediting me when you used my footage even though it was just a few seconds, I really appreciate it! Many, many people have taken chunks of my footage and never credited me (looking at you, honest trailers). Whether it would have been legal or not, I always appreciate when someone goes out of their way to have my name listed when they use my footage, Thank you!
@@GangreneSerenity In regards to which? This video uses a few seconds of my footage at 39:31 acquired from my first Far Cry 5 video. Has my name at the top left in huge letters which is awesome (thanks again, Whitelight!). Fandom Games used footage from my Doppleganger tips and tricks Dishonored 2 video during their honest trailers Dishonored video (1:56 on my video, 3:35 on theirs). They never credited me anywhere at all. That one actually pissed me off because while the footage they use from trailers is obviously implied to not be their own, my footage was just gameplay footage, which I'm sure 99.9% of people assumed Fandom Games had recorded -- which they didn't. That video actually has a lot of gameplay footage in it and I wouldn't be surprised at all if most if not all of it is stolen from other RUclipsrs. It's just a shitty thing to do, whether it falls under fair use or "parody" or whatever, it's just a bad take. They had over a million subscribers when that happened and I had a 1000. They have a team of people working on their channel and certainly have the ability, funds, and manpower to buy the game and record their footage themselves instead of taking it from small RUclips channels with no credit to them. When this originally happened I emailed them I and asked them to credit me. However, if they didn't want to credit me I had another option: I give 10% of all my RUclips earnings to charity and I suggested that if they didn't want to credit me, they should follow my example being as how they're using my footage. They never answered.
Having just beat Watch Dogs 1 and trying to do the "wick style" combat, I can now understand just how impressive this gameplay is. This play style is extremely hard and it is difficult to gain an appreciation for just how hard it is without trying it.
I played this game when I knew nothing about it and I loved it was fun but then when I saw all of this I was so confused why people hate it the whole game is a 9/10 my only problem was the shading was on the Xbox also I live in Chicago and the game and city are very similar
I really LOVED Aiden's character. Only wish Ubisoft would've fleshed him out more--he's got some great startings of a completely unhinged, murderous manipulator who is also quite deep in his own guilt and unable to critically think of his own actions (as in seeing no wrong in what he does, or justifying it to himself by the 'greater cause'). I really enjoyed the game too and got quite a lot of hate from my group on gaming friends bc i liked both the game and its protagonist, lol.
I only played a little bit of this game but I just recently ordered the game. I played and beat 2 but I'm currently playing the new one. I'll play 1 as well to see which watch dogs are better. And what's crazy is watch dogs 1 had the longest story and 3 have the shortest story so far.
It feels so good to have people finally acknowledge that Watch Dogs, despite its flaws, was pretty damn good. If it weren't for bad marketing with impossibly high expectations, this game would be remembered as an absolute classic. You can tell that the developers put their heart into it, and they had nothing to do with the bad marketing. I hope this video encourages more people to appreciate this game for what it is.
The fact is that people are already starting to recognize Watchdogs as a classic. Watchdogs 2 was a improvement to 1 but it lacked many features like mini-games and reputation system. Now as Ubisoft has taken a new direction to Watchdogs: Legion, people would be more acknowledging Watchdogs 1.
I don't know. I just replayed it recently after not playing for years. It starts out fairly strong, sneaking through the baseball stadium. Then it all goes downhill from there. It's not terrible, but it really doesn't feel like it has its own identity. It feels like a weird mix of Splinter Cell Conviction/Blacklist, Assassin's Creed, and GTA, and it never really comes together. The hacking feels more gimmicky than anything. Then there's the jarring ludonarrative dissonance. Supposedly he's an anti-hero vigilante, but he robs people's bank accounts, threatens witnesses to conceal his identity, and he has no problem wiping out entire gangs, but he absolutely CANNOT kill the gang leaders, for some reason. The whole thing is a bit of a mess. And that's not even getting into the boring, cliche "killed family member" motivation. All in all, it's at best a mediocre experience.
Rahul Sar idk I prefer not to have reputations systems in games like this, it takes a lot of the fun out of free roaming. You can’t go on rampages or God forbid accidentally hit a civilian with your car or people start calling the cops on sight. Then to get your reputation back to even the middle ground have to waste 30 min doing a bunch of side missions
I loved Bad Blood. That moment where T-Bone pleads to the families, and they don't forgive him... It always hit me hard. I agree, I've never met another person whose played it, but it's great, and I'm glad you showed it the love it deserved. Watch Dogs as well, but I feel Bad Blood got particularly ignored
I played it because it came with the complete edition of watchdogs (which I was going to buy but came with my preorder of legion) and my biggest gripe is how short it was
I played it because I wanted to get all achievements, and it was all I had left to get. I got it for $5 on sale one day. Now I've been waiting to do the same thing with watch dogs 2, but for some reason, the season pass for that game never goes below $20, which frankly just isn't worth it for gamerscore lol
@@shinyrayquaza9 It actually comes with the season pass, meaning if you buy the season pass (like I did, but I bought the ultimate edition) you get Watch Dogs 1's complete edition
Hope it was worth the wait! Three quick things. Firstly, this video used to have a NordVPN sponsorship in case you're wondering about the weird edit at the start. As far as I knew, their recent incident was nothing to worry about. But until I know enough to make a solid judgement, the segment is cut. Sorry for the inconvenience. Secondly, if some of the clips look odd, it's because I had to recolour them myself. My Shadowplay has decided to be colourblind. Thirdly, it's worth mentioning that I think Watch_Dogs' reputation has gotten worse with time, which I would have liked to bring up in the video. In 2014, the nukes were indeed dropped, but there was also a considerable group who quite liked the game. Over time, I think the louder words of those who hated it have stood the test of time and created a sorta negative feeback loop. In multiple ways. That's just an observation, but I think it's a common phenomena with "disappointing" games, especially Dark Souls 2.
NordVPN is not trustworthy. They deceived people for year to hide what happened. If I want a secure service, I will use the one which will actually warn me if my data was compromised. Still a great video, though.
Sylono Lie'Magno I would have preferred aiden and jordi going to San Francisco, meeting Marcus and the crew and helping them. Then in watch dogs legion Aidan and jordi go to London to recruit an army. I’m no game writer but I would have preferred we follow aiden with jordi not far behind through all of this.
I wish Ubisoft had taken more time to burrow to the core of what would make this IP iconic. Rather than GTA in an Anonymous mask and generic edgelord trenchcoat, they could’ve focused on the techno-John Wick or open-world Mr. Robot. If it was the world of the Alone side missions or Pearce was more of an assassin than a hacker, I think it would’ve gone over better
@No Faith nah I have a bit more faith in legion then I did in 2,I'm much more in favor of the dark gritty atmosphere rather than the milennial bullshit of 2
I mean... he kinda is. He was an asshole who fucked with the wrong people and got his niece killed. Instead of moving on with his life he continues to do the same thing which ends up almost killing his family. He lacks a personality. He try’s to be funny but he isn’t. He is so unlikable. The likable, interesting characters were his enemies and his partners.
By the way, Aiden never fought Blume, his goal was always to find his nieces killers, he just used Dedsec, and was just caught in the war between hackers and blume
@@sulphurous2656 Correct me if I am wrong but didn't they asked for like 30 secs is all we need and he was like 30 secs our littlr secret, nobody's gonna now. I even waited one minute like after that for them to get that backdoor in. So what are you talking about?
I hate the fact that just because Ubisoft lied to us, people hate this game. Watch dogs is a great game that if showned the way it would end up, people might have handled it differently
It's like AC unity you know how everyone hated it just bc the bugs, watch dogs had the same problem except without the bugs, no one wanted to finish the story and give it a chance just like AC unity and both the game impressed me. Ubisoft is overhated
Yeah, as someone who played this game I find it exceptional, which is rare for Ubisoft games, the only other game that was as high quality and innovative was probably Far Cry 2
@Good Hunter name a good hacker game that does this same premise better than. Whilst you’re at it you can also explain HOW they do it better or WHY this game is worse.
@@GingeryGinger fuck the hacking I love the shootouts. For me the problem is aiden is a good protagonist but he's been created for the wrong game he's an action protagonist creating a character like aiden and then advertising it a hacking game doesn't do him justice
@@KingOfCurses-309 You can see why he refused though. Dedsec for all its claims of benevolence are very misguided. In WD2 they get pissy when people say mean things about them and they aren't above commiting the same crimes they expose. They are a time-bomb and Aiden realised that.
ShadowFiend898 To be fair Aiden does the same thing is them. He complains about how the system monitors every thing but uses the system for his own good. Dedsec while still flawed for stealing took the system down themselves. And the reason they got pissy is because unlike Aiden Pearce they are borrowing processing power from the public. If a hacking group says and talks shit about them they could loose followers, which means less hacking power which means less of a chance of control for taking down ctOS
I always had a soft spot for this game, and then one time I was escaping police on a rainy night, and ended up in one of the disused train tracks. There, I accidentally found a dead body, which was ceremonially executed. This made me aware of a side mission where Aiden tracks down a serial killer, and it is one of the most affecting moments I've ever had with a game.
'in infamous second son you can ride the train' original infamous: has 3 trains each with their own mission and you ride them both during and after the mission
Mafia had a fully realized overworld train system one year later as well. Infamous 3:the tech demo actually being the first time he encountered it is mindblowing though.
26:30 it only displays Aiden's face if you are playing in red reputation. Cannon is that Aiden hasn't gotten into red by then so that's what the story assumes - and that's why Nikki doesn't know. It's a weak explanation, but better than none imo.
And also the fact that by the time they start mentioning aiden in the broadcasts Nikki had been in captivity for like a 2 or so weeks (or however long the time is from Nikki’s abduction to her escape) and had no way of seeing or hearing those broadcasts. honestly my only problem with that whole thing was the delivery from the actress, it just felt a bit off but i can’t really articulate my thoughts on it
The Immature Gamer don’t get me wrong Ubisoft is no saint but yea i feel like they get excessive hate, for every game that has failed at launch they never abandoned it.
Its kinda warranted. Crowbcats video really highlighted this. I played this a month ago and just finished Unity and i can honestly say, the hate for unity is much more unwarranted than it is for watch dogs. Playing those two games back to back. Watch dogs has aged terribly. Whilst unity has aged like a fine wine.
Especially as a non native speaker I, for some inexplicable reason, can’t help myself but to view the way you choose to articulate yourself as incredibly pleasing and beautiful
I quite liked the reputation system, it reminds you that you're avenging your niece's death not causing the same damage to others, for people who go for Anarchist it doesn't apply to them because they're just playing a game not playing the character. I would say more but I'm not sure how to convey it
I played aiden as a benevolent dude the first time i played the game, doing the best i could to save any and every one, i play games like i am the mc, the second time tho, i literally spent an hour shooting cops in the spiral parking thing for fun, i know what you mean, the first playthrough i was doing my best to keep people from pain, doing the best i cpuld to make sure that the damage was as little as i could, i was sympathetic, the second playthrough tho i was all over the place, fuckin bgg eevvvverybody up, this is a long way of me saying, i get what you mean from both sides, the rep system is story driven, if your playing a game, not being the character the rep system is meaningless, if your playing like you are the character, the rep system tells you how your fucking people over, hurting familys, killing people, not npcs
I killed nearly everyone I was allowed to kill, but didn't have to, and a few I felt deserved death but were classified by the game as a civilian. The dudes with the briefcases after the auction? I executed every single one of them with a shot to the back of the head with a .45 after hacking their phones. Felt right. I also killed a few random civilians after profiling them if I didn't like what I saw or heard them say, and I didn't hesitate to draw down on rude pedestrians if I bumped into them by mistake, or blow up cars that bumped me while I was crossing the street, though mere accidents didn't generally rise to a capital offense. Even still, the game was rewarding good behavior enough that my extracurricular murders and property damage weren't enough to make me negative in the rep system. Oh yeah, and I often put a bullet in the head of anyone I merely knocked out in the course of missions unless they absolutely had to stay alive for some reason. Can't leave witnesses when you're dealing with an evil corporation, the mafia, or a tech-savvy gang. As far as Chicago understands, there is no vigilante named Aiden Pierce, just a series of unexplained murders. Maybe they're hits. Maybe somebody just died in a mugging. Maybe it's a gang war. Whatever happened, nobody's alive to tell the tale, or seek revenge of their own. I was also very particular about where I parked my carjacked vehicles after a job, or any stolen from a violent crime scene. Totally roleplaying on my part, but I didn't think it was a good idea to leave a trail back to my secret hideouts from such hot vehicles, either from the police or the gangs I was messing with. As soon as possible after fleeing a scene with witnesses, I'd hide the car someplace unlikely to be discovered all that quickly, and switch to a new, clean parked vehicle (often car on demand) to drive the rest of the way to wherever I was going to sleep or meet up with my friends and family. Just once I'd like to play an open world game that actually has consequences for the evidence and witnesses you leave behind. Hitman series might punish you for not hiding your bodies well enough, but nobody's made a game yet that I know of where you need to clean up your brass and wipe down your fingerprints.
If you pick up and listen to the audio logs you actually get some of the backstory behind Maurice and why he did what he did. He really was much more like Aiden then you started off thinking, just trying to protect family. I thought that the revelation, and acceptance, that Maurice was a victim too, and deserved a second chance, as Aiden finally accepted that he too deserved a second chance, was a great piece of storytelling.
I agree, but curiosity got the best of me. If you fire the gun, even if it isn’t at Maruices head, it’ll count. I reset the save and got the ending I wanted, but still something I wanted to point out.
I liked both. I loved the second when I played it in 2017. But I truly, truly believe that a light hearted tone was not the way to go. I hope Legion finds a reasonable compromise.
Sort of the Assassin Creed 2 effect? Taking a flawed-but-promising baseline, and then massaging it by committee into something more enjoyable, but less engaging?
Probably because the map isn't Chicago at all....it's a map called that. Landmass is totally different to the real place. Driver 2 got it right, I don't know why they made a city that's completely different. It's a nice map, but it isn't Chicago.
13:50 "for some reason CtoS can't use this to find you, but people on the street do." This got explained actually. Adian found a backdoor to stop the CtoS automated face recognition system from identify him. He still need to convince the general public they didn't see him though.
@@Whitelight his entire body is pixelated too. Not just his face. His phone probably sends out a signal that activates whatever program he set to scramble his entire form, when a ctos camera is pointed at him. Also you probably addressed this somewhere in the comments but the surrender blackout animation does happen but only if you have one star/less than two full stars. When they get closer Aiden lifts his arms like the trailer but you can do whatever you want, including blackout and focus shooting the police. If you do nothing, you get arrested
Best in the series by far. Idk how more games don’t have the John wick gameplay. The simple detail of aiden holding his gun behind his back to hide it a bit when not aiming goes a very long way.
Honestly, I really enjoyed the car chases in Watch Dogs 1. I don't know why, maybe it was the "weight" of the cars, but they were really enjoyable for me.
@@Syne50 its an intentional design choice to connect the 2 parts, if they wanted it to be read as two seperate words they would have left some sort of, i dont know, empty space to signify such
@@femthingevelyn _ is used commonly in computer programming languages specifically in names(files, etc) to signify a space between words,so it's there to separate the words not connect them. Maybe watch dogs is kind of a hacking game idk
So I've spent the last couple of hours watching most of your "Years Later" Series, and I have to say. It's one of the best "Critique of an older game" formats I have seen to date. You see it from both sides, not only in "Is the game any good anymore?" But also "Was it good at release, and what does that have to say for it now." Aswell as taking the story and Mechanical and Graphical limitations as a factor. I have one issue however, I feel like you've got a problem with easy and non-skillbased Combat. Do you feel like you factor in the fact that some people simply lack the patience and neceserry ability to play games with skillbased combat? Because I tend to agree with you, that difficult combat would be alot more fun sometimes, aswell as add to a games length by having you become more familiar with the Combat Mechanics and learning what works and what doesnt against certain enemies. But also, In alot of skillbased combat systems, I am very much out of my depth. And it prevents me from experiencing a Story I would otherwise find Compelling. An example for me, Is Darksouls games vs Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Personally, I would find a game set in a medieval world, with swords and an actual interactive combat system super fun. If I could just not get instant killed half the time. Whereas in a star wars game I usually play it once unless it has a replay value factor ala Kotor I, II and Old Republic. But with Jedi Fallen Order, I have played it once on the normal difficulty to be able to feel challanged but also immerse myself in the story, and once on NG+ at the hardest difficulty. And I enjoyed that immensly because of the challange and difficulty. I might be simply just commenting on a problem unique to me but having more games especially games like the new ACs coming out having a slider go from: "Very Easy" to "You will get 1 shot by most enemies" Would make the game super fund, because I could just crank the difficulty to a level I am comfortable with to get the story and then replaying it with the challange turned up to max. Sorry for rambling. Please keep the amazing content coming. Also, if you could do an Elder Scrolls and Fallout version of these that would be amazing.
I get what you mean. For me I’m more about harder combat. I’m big into games like insurgency and ArmA so those games are basically 1 hit kill kinda stuff. But I like that watchdogs and later on far cry 5 had very adjustable difficulty. Easily combat if you want, punishly hard and rewarding if you want it. Accessibly isn’t a bad thing in games. Think of how many people wouldn’t be able to play this game if the combat was like dark souls
I take it you like For Honor. If you haven’t played it, it sounds like something you’d fall in love with. Medieval, interactive and skill based combat.
Would've been wayyy cooler if they went for more of a psychological story, like what happens to a person when they try single handedly taking over the world, the ptsd, paranoia, depression, substances that they use to keep them going, and having aiden just lose everything just to stop those who have power
@@siddharthsagar1506 nah those aren't the same, at least far cry, idk much about hellblade This could've been a great modern take on things, far cry 3 saw jason thriving in a ruthless environment, he was the one with power, but watch dogs would've been the opposite, seeing a more human protagonist taking on the faceless corporation who runs the world all while trying and ultimately failing to keep his friends and families safe, always having to be on the run, cover his tracks, never getting a full nights sleep, and just getting to see Aiden use every bit of resource at his fingertips to make all his suffering worth it
I really enjoyed this review. I love watch dogs 1, but it doesnt really get any attention anymore. I really liked the characters and story in the first game and i thought that aiden is a very badass and overall awsome character. Its a shame that watch dogs got so much shit even though its an amazing game. I also think bad blood is painfully underated because i found it very fun and i think it reveals more about T-bone as a character, who i think is also a fantastic character.
What makes me laugh is that only issue people seemed to have with this game was sun effects, which is too bright on normal settings in a clear day anyway.
@@VRockVulture My theory is that all this hate comes from people feeling indirect peer pressure to hate this game. Same with many other hated (yet, at the core, good) games. I guess people just can't truly think for themselves, huh? Like with those "New Coke" drinks tasting better than old Coke, yet it got massively hated because society is society. Governments can knowingly be wrong and harmful, society can be unknowingly wrong and harmful I suppose.
Thank you for covering the soundtrack! A lot of people don't talk about it, but the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. The bunker mission was i think also the only time you could hear aiden laugh. Good game. could be better, but I loved it.

I remember getting in a garbage truck in multiplayer with random guy driving. It's incredibly rare and cannot be ordered through your smartphone. Essentially this is the only vehicle that can provide full cover to people. We were driving around shooting everything in sight for an hour straight. We couldn't be stopped really. It was really hard to get away after all the mayhem we caused, but the driver was pretty good and with us constantly controlling traffic lights, garage doors and other environmental hazards we managed to escape. It was one of the most intense experiences in the online games that I've ever experienced
When I played this game, I decided not to use guns. It often lead to me having to use melee or grenades because there's just not enough lethal hack opportunities to deal with all the enemies. It was an interesting experience, and pretty unique. Also, I never really had issues with reputation. It never really felt like a challenge to avoid injuring/killing civilians or police, which is why didn't do it at all.
I know this is late, but same here. Although I mainly used a silenced pistol because the aesthetic of walking with it hidden behind your waistcoat and executing someone quickly or chasing someone down through alleys and over fences to tackle them and knock them out. I think a lot of complaints about reputation were from people who don’t do stealth games, prefer a military style game, or only played the game shortly. I’ve played GTA and acted like a madman but in Watchdogs I knew full and well how to act and what the game was asking of me.
@@foxe2465 lets look at Assasins Creed. Bad reputation builds up, if you steal or cause crimes. You can lower it by ripping of wanted poster or bribe someone. It’s easy to build it up and lower it. It doesn’t mean you can be a madman causing crimes because it could lead to desynchronization. In Watch Dogs it takes hours of building a good reputation and what is the effect? Literally nothing. But to lower it? In seconds. If you have thousands of cops up your ass and you can’t kill anyone because it will lower your reputation, it’s a pain in the ass. But you can hack steam pipes to blow them up or indirectly kill them and it won’t lower your reputation. What’s the point of it? It should be more like Assassins Creed rep system

"Watchdogs went trough all the trouble to create an interesting concept and then proceeds to do everything it can to be as uninteresting as physically possible." This pretty much describes Ubisofts philosophy on making games. Cool on paper. Generic in execution. I do buy some games they release and every time it feels like I've played it before. I am never surprised by anything that happens. Its obvious they put a huge amount of work and dedication in them(I was kind of blown away by the detailed city in The Division), they are mostly polished enough for open world games, but f*ck me, its just a looter shooter with no sense of completion after you beat its "campaign missions". I did not care about a singe character in that game. Its so f***ing mindless. Great video, by the way.
The only reason I even like the first "The Division" game is due to the very convincing and detailed NYC setting (I'm born and bred New Yorker). Well, that and the gameplay is solid, but I am otherwise bored by looter shooters and their mechanics, and The Division in that regard bores me to no end. That's why I will never purchase The Division 2.
I guess the only Ubisoft title I can say that goes against the grain there in recent history that I can _think_ of is Rainbow Six Siege. But does that even count?

- MightySpriteKnight - yeah I don’t get why they did that this watch dogs told a story had a mysterious and gritty tone to it then suddenly we get watch dogs 2 and now watch dogs legion were they suddenly shifted to all the focus to dedsec and even in the first game they were kinda introduced as a mysterious hacker group like anonymous now they’re some kind of punkish rebel type of hacker group, that being said though I don’t hate the new games I just wished they kept the same tone as the first game
If they can get both I'd think it's perfect. Both games had redeeming qualities wd1 was great in story and gameplay, etc wd2 had good music........... and some funny jokes..... it looked better? It was still good

Am I the only one That actually LOVED THIS GAME AND it's characters. I literally put 500hrs on this game and loved every minute. I loved the stealth mainly because that's my play style. I prefer to go in and out without no one noticing I was there and well took out anyone that got in my path. So does nobody ever mess with the traffic and blow the cars up 😂
Same, this vvas my second open vvorld game, and Im happy my experience is as good as it is. This is truly an underrated gem that should be give another chance. My man Aiden Pearce had the character of John wick, and the lore and detail of John wick before John wick ever came. (If you see the lore behind aiden pearce and Assasins Creed.
It's my 5th favorite game of all time, and I've played hundreds of games. I love the gameplay, look, story, and characters. I have to replay it about once every year.
I just hated how the difficulty ramped up to super unreasonable when getting to the last few generators. They start spawning enemies all around you. I did beat it and get the outfit for it, but the experience of struggling to beat the last bit of it make me not want to go back to it for a while
I was still too young to understand Aidan when the game first came out but now that I’m older and able to buy my own games and laptop(I’m still in college), I’m now able to appreciate Aidan’s journey more deeply coming from a Witcher nerd’s pov with the dark theme and emotional attachment that made me root for the main characters.
Well, one of the consistently strong aspects of Ubisoft's games is their sound design. I tend to wear headphones anytime I play one of their games (Splinter Cell Blacklist) because the sound design is so damn great.
it bugs me to no end that when hacking defense it's best to turn all the music off but my goodness is that sound design gorgeous a futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic....
Awwww come on, Watch Dogs 2 was still beautiful and has amazing gameplay. I personally enjoyed the multiplayer and did multiplayer most of the game. I think most of us can all agree that it has some of the most beautiful graphics of all time.(or so I think so)
So glad that you mentioned amazing music and strong DLC. And yes, Aiden Pearce is a compelling madman, I love him. I think more and more people find out about Watch_Dogs after the fact and they don't really care about the pre-release claims, so they get to enjoy the game as it is. I have played it in 2019 as well, it was a stand out game for me, and I have only heard about the release scandal only after I have spent 100 hours in Watch_Dogs.
I have a soft spot for this game, one of my fav series Ubisoft has done. Sure it had flaws, and sure they're milking it now like Assassins Creed, but I'll always love the original.
@@morgan0__o wheres beyond good and evil 2 or other new IPs? That's all I'm saying. Thankfully they don't release a watch dogs every year like they did assassin's creed
I'm really glad someone has finally gave this game a second deep look, it surely got more hate than it deserved, yet it was quite an original game with its dark take and new concepts, I even prefer it to the 2nd entry. Though I have 2 remarks to make about the video: - The surrender-blackout mechanic does exist in the game, you can perform it up till Act 3, after that the cops directly shots without notice (I believe it is tied to the story but i forgot the details of it). - The E3 graphic settings does exist hidden in the PC game files, the early mods just activated them back. And by the latest updates of these mods, I can argue that the results looks fairly similar if not better than the demo (except from explosion effects which were better on the demo) Again, thank you for this enjoyable video, I hope you will give us a same quality ones for other overlooked games such as AC Unity, Watch Dogs 2 and plz one for AC Origins.
Im one of the very few that loves Aiden as a protagonist. He literally knows what he wants and stops at nothing but his family to get to it. And even at that, he sends them away to give him power to not slow his conscious down. Im very much looking forward to him being in Watchdogs legion.
I know this is an older video, but one thing you might've messed up on: coming out too early and scaring the potential criminal away doesn't award reputation because the public has no idea that the criminal was, in fact, a criminal. They hadn't committed a crime yet, and for the most part, only you knew that they would. However, if you intervene in the middle of the crime, it's obvious to the public that you saved someone because the criminal was waving a gun around. The rep system shows how the public views you, not how you view yourself. Mind you, I'm not saying that the rep system is good. It's incredibly annoying. But people often get confused with the crime intervention scenarios. Also, I heard was that the original graphics are possible to unlock on PC, with some file tweaking. For some reason, they disabled it, whether that be for performance or just so that the consoles and PC would be identical.
I remember playing the hell out of Watch Dog’s multiplayer races. I don’t know why but I really liked the driving physics despite what everyone else says
Playing with keyboard, in watch dogs you press the arrow key, the tires start to turn so the car doesn't do a big turn at the first moment. If you hold the arrow key a longer time, the wheels then get a bigger angle and you feel the car turning more dramatically. It takes time to get used to it (when I started to play i thought it was a delay about the input). In GTA this movement is more regular, you tap the arrow key and the car do a more intense move to the side, it's easier to do quick small corrections, but it's less realistic. I think this is what happens, but I can be wrong, I don't know.
I finally came back to this game, started over and beat it in 2021 years after it came out. To be completely honest, I really like Aiden as a character, the story is cool and yes a little odd and the gameplay is kinda wack at times but I’m glad I got to beat it and I wish I could play as Aiden more
I still feel guilty about how I treated this game when it came out. I played it on PS3 and thought the driving and controls sucked. I tried to play it like a GTA game and it isn't GTA. Played the game for what it was on PS4 and it was amazing, one of the best games and stories I think I ever experienced. You really feel like you are taking on the underworld as this vigilante guy out for revenge. The story is very dark. It's way better than the second in every way. Sucks that they won't do anymore games like this one especially seeing how Legion is going to be. It looks interesting in that you can play as any NPC, but the tone feels silly. It reminds me of Saints Row the Third
Actually u cant call them NPC(non-playable character) in watch dogs legion becaues u can play with all the so they must be a new term for what we should call them
Exactly my thoughts. Watch Dogs had that realistic tone, that I really enjoy. Watch Dogs 2 was more childish, I cant describe it but the atmosphere wasnt just as good as the first game IMO. And yes, Legion looks that is going further than watch dogs 2, into the saints row realm.
I come back to this video every couple of months, honestly, your script delivery, editing style & ability to TELL a games story (something designed to be experienced) so entertainingly is ridiculous. You truly are one of the greatest to ever do it
Probably the best review I’ve ever seen, an hour of pros and cons both making me want to buy the game even though I already have the 2nd game and don’t rlly need the first but also not want to get the game. Seriously good work
@@Subpar1224 not really, I've been having a blast with WD2, it takes itself less serious, sometimes too much, content is WAY more interesting, coming from someone who did side content in WD and ended up with a copy paste mission. Aiden is more likeable than Retr0 tho (and more interesting since he's probably an Assassin)
@@aayushdas19 Yeah, I'm really worried about it. The gunplay looks like it lacks any impact or punch. Despite being worried, I do have faith in CD Projekt Red though.
DUDE I'm so glad you actually went into detail with the game and spoke about Alone. That was literally my favorite mini-game and I probably played that (and Spidertank) more than the actual game itself. There was so much to the atmosphere and mechanics of the game that I enjoyed that I seriously considered getting Watch_Dogs for my Steam account just so I could mull through the story until I could play that trip again. What was really cool was that the game never forced you to actually succeed in Alone. After I beat the trip half a dozen times or so, the next time I booted it up I just sort of wandered around. I had just completed the first sector, and when the night turned to day, I started running towards the next one until I stopped and just felt like going the other direction. Funny thing is, the game's entire map is free to explore in Alone. The city is full of empty cars, and the dark zones are full of robots, but aside from that the map is completely devoid of life and activity. Drive to any part of the city and you can reach the other end undisturbed. In a game full of hyperactive technology and people living their artificial lives, the world just feels so atmospheric and melancholic compared to the rest of the game. My favorite thing was driving my car up the stairs and onto the train tracks and just driving all the way around the island rails. I was even able to use that to my advantage at one point and wheel myself really far into the dark zones and kill a bunch of the robots from above before jumping back down and freeing the zone. Between that and the uniqueness of the invasion mechanic (where other players look like pedestrians to you, and vice versa, spread out in an entire open world map) I wonder if we'll ever get anything like that in a AAA setting again.
I had zero expectations when playing this game and i loved it! I didn't know much about it to begin with. You felt very powerful, more like a legendary hitman that also had some hacking abilities. I missed feeling this strong in the second one. One thing i really liked was FEELING like the main character. Underrated game.
Jesus Christ this video is a masterpiece. I loved the game back when it was released. I loved it much more than the second game. The setting, the atmosphere, the characters, the gameplay, the story. I love this game, even with all it's flaws. I really hope that they will make the Legion a game the Watch_Dogs 2 should've been.
the reason why i love this game so much is the animations. every single animation in this game from walking to reloading feels so weighty and realistic. Gives it much more replay value for me
The intro of this video is brilliant. You made the right decision by using "Collateral" in your intro. 6:19 Tbh, first half of 8th gen felt like a remaster of 7th gen to me. 8th gen would be 7th gen with a prettier face and higher resolution If PBR material, volumetric lighting, checkerboard rendering (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X), and TAA weren't a thing. 7:26 For some reason this sounds exactly like Dutch Van Der Linde's infamous "We need money." quote. 8:42 You can still take enemies down even without utilizing QTE in chases, just time it well. Ubisoft should've completely removed hacking QTE and risked "criticism" from new players. Looking forward to the day someone manages to remove hacking QTE from the PC version of WD1. 12:59 The handling is alright in my opinion, the handling can sometimes be a bit twitchy and unresponsive. Also, the sense of speed is fantastic considering it's not even a racing game. 15:00 _"Aiden is a man of _*_focus,_*_ commitment, and sheer will, something Damien knows very little about."_ I have no idea why Ubisoft didn't show some John Wick style gameplay in the marketing material alongside usual social hacking. Also, John Wick came out after this game came out. And VC made his first WD1 JW style gameplay video before the first John Wick released, but one of his 2017 videos popularized this playstyle. 17:55 WD1 is one of the few open world games where it's possible to detonate a grenade mid air by shooting it. 28:43 I would've agreed with you before finding Lucky Quinn's audio logs. Turns out he was the one who funded ctOS program. 30:53 -Police- E3 Bandwagon who should have moved on a long time ago instead of whining about WD1 not being a "GTA Killer", those people hyped up the game with unrealistic expectations and decided to do a 180. I'm glad that WD1 found it's own fanbase and most of the E3 bandwagon moved on since then. 37:54 Criminal convoys could've been made even better if you were given an option to speak to the NPC targeted by the bad guys and take him/her to a safe place (and maybe get a conversation that sheds light on why he/she was targeted to begin with). Also, have only one criminal convoy happen per 24 hour in the open world (and unlimited, obviously). 48:48 This circular search zone system could've worked if the number of circles of doom were reduced to a maximum of 2 and restricted to the borough where the crime was originally committed (with the freeways being exempt from these circles of doom) 50:56 WD1 became more popular since you posted this video because WD fanbase consists of people who never stopped playing and players new to the series. Also, WD1's multiplayer is the only multiplayer I really enjoyed. 51:54 T-Bone wants to know your location. 53:52 This is why I consider you to be one of the best retrospective videogame reviewers alongside Raycevick. 56:51 So, Raycevick was doing some voiceovers for Ubisoft before he started reviewing games? 57:41 It's possible in the final game in Act 1&2 ruclips.net/video/bWf8QalPP7w/видео.html 1:03:44 The pre-crime system demonstrated in this mission should've been applied to free roam as well, would've made profiling NPCs more interesting. 1:03:55 So, shooting an NPC in the nose isn't lethal. 1:09:41 At least you get to keep the collectibles instead of mindlessly visiting 50-100 places for a checklist. Also, WD1 implemented audio logs pretty well, you can listen to them anytime you want without going to a pause menu. John Wick's world reminds me of WD1 where anyone might be a fixer willing to kill Aiden Pearce at any moment (assuming you are playing with internet turned on). Tbh, Ubisoft should have given us the option to have AI controlled hacker fixers attack Aiden every once in a while. Watch Dogs 1 is one of my favourite video games of all time despite the overblown criticism it gets from "most people". Thankfully I wasn't on the hype train when it was released and only learned of this game's existence when it was already out for a while. "most people" is a small group of people that managed to change the general consensus without letting people give the game a proper chance. (people on the internet does not equal people outside the internet and the ones who are simply enjoying the game). WD1 has plenty of fans, but they aren't as vocal as the ones who do not like this game. Ubisoft (publisher) and Ubisoft Montréal (developer) aren't the same entity. *Ubisoft Montréal* is the developer who made the game and *Ubisoft* is the publisher that created the hype surrounding the game and created unrealistic expectations through its overambitious marketing tactics. Ubisoft deserves the backlash for how they treated the then brand new IP, not the developers. Ubisoft saw this as an opportunity to set this game as a "GTA killer" while the developers wanted to create a unique open world game with the idea of controlling a city through hacking. Developers work hard only to be given an unrealistic deadline by the publisher, and end up creating a game that falls short of expectations. Ubisoft had 4 games in their 2014 release schedule: ACU, AC Rogue, FC4 ,and WD1. While Rockstar had a remastered version of GTA 5 in 2014. Rockstar involves *every studio* into one project at the risk of *bankruptcy,* Ubisoft does not do the same since *diversifying* resources into different projects reduce the chance of bankruptcy even if one game is a disappointment. Ubisoft operates like a *business,* treating games like *products.* WD1 *maybe* would've had a chance against GTA if Ubisoft launched no other games during 2014, and a better development schedule was used with every studio working on WD1. No, this game would have *never* beaten GTA 5 even if we were handed the E3 2012 build as the final game. E3 version's NPCs were completely scripted, same goes for NPCs in the final game. GTA will be more popular than any urban open world game made by other publishers because GTA is a monopoly in the urban open world crime game market at this point. GTA offers something for everyone and the stories are simple enough to be understood by anyone (which definitely helps boost sales). And the fans of Rockstar games have the power to turn facts into opinions and opinions into facts. WD1's PS4, XB1, and PC versions contributed 66% of the total sales, meaning PS3/360 versions should've been canceled in the first place. This game had a $68 million development cost, a large amount of that money went into building a new game engine, a brand new WD universe, and the game was developed for 5 platforms at launch. WD1 made around $400-450 million *assuming* the average price was around $40-45 per copy (it would be foolish to assume a $60 average price due to the tainted reputation at launch, a heavy discount was obvious) with 10 million copies sold by December 2014. The game needed around $140 million (3.12 to 3.5 million copies sold) to break-even, marketing costs are usually equal to development cost. The game would've still turned a profit even with 66% of the sales. ($268 to 300 million) GTA 5 was developed at a cost of $265 million (development cost was over $137 million) and made $1 billion in 3 days and sold 16.7 million copies assuming they were sold at $60 per copy (no reason for R* to discount the most hyped game of the year in only 3 days). It needed 4.42 million copies sold to break-even. GTA 5 developers had a mature engine (RAGE evolved during GTA5 development) and only had to build off of GTA IV. It was made for 2 platforms at launch and they spent a lot of time adding to HD universe, something GTA IV devs already built from the ground up. While WD1 devs almost had to start from the scratch. FC's AI system, Driver SF handling's tweaked version, and parts of AnvilNext were used for WD1's Disrupt. AC4 Black Flag *apparently* had a $100 million budget (found on the internet, might not be true) compared to WD1's $68 million. AC4 was built off of AC3 and simply built a new world with existing tools. WD1 and NFS Carbon are on the same boat IMO. Both games were hated by a certain group of people at launch, the ones still come back to "correct" and shove down their opinions on the people who liked these games. In NFSC's case, people who joined social media back in 2005-2007 are the ones who come back to express their dissatisfaction over a dead horse. In WD1's case, it's the E3 2012 hype crowd. Both games didn't live up to expectations (since the expectations were sky high). Both games somehow managed to be on my favourite video games list even though they shouldn't be according to that "certain group of people". Both games are actually good but are treated like some kind of "one of the worst games of all time" and stand between 75-80 on Metacritic. WD1 deserved a better publisher than Ubisoft. If you decide to do a retrospective of Watch Dogs Legion, please remember to point out the absence of train in that game. *UPDATE (4-1-2024):* Whitelight spent around a minute criticizing WDL's lack of trains in the WDL 3 Years Later video. 10 million copies sold is impressive by itself (many games couldn't even reach half of that), but I still think that WD1 was a disappointment in terms of sales, it should've sold at least 15-20 million copies to justify the hype it created. Many newer games from the late 2010's and early 2020's sell nearly twice that figure. Ubisoft is secretive about its sales, so I'm not sure if we'll ever know if WD1 reached 15 million copies over the years. We're heading for a future that is very similar to what WD1 and Person of Interest demonstrated, so WD1 SHOULD have been more successful. I wish that you brought up Person of Interest in this video. Excellent video!
The ending of watch dogs specially after Aiden delieved his speech about protecting everyone punishing the bad once made me remind of Light Yagami (the main protagonist from Death Note) who also thought like this after getting the death note. Both these guys felt like god after recovering something powerful. Aiden got the entire CTOS network control in his hands and Light got the entire death note control in his hands.
I get what you mean by becoming John Wick, the cover vault kills, gun melee, stumbles and rolls make moving quickly and closing gaps very, very satisfying. I’ve felt like WD and WD2 has always struggled with weapons. The marketing and sickass takedowns makes me think WD1 was supposed to have pistols be the main tool, but instead you get ARs, shotguns, and snipers. WD2 suffers from this way worse - it’s clearly supposed to be a breakfast club hacker teen movie, but you can whip out an assault rifle and gun down dozens of cops, despite your goal literally being good PR. That, and the addition of the taser and having electric traps and melee being explicitly nonlethal makes it clear to me that combat was supposed to be limited. In my mind hacking is necessary since the taser has one shot and takedowns take time, but instead I can whip out a shotty and delete people. Ubisoft’s execs clearly had their fingers all over WD combat. Should’ve let WD1 be John Wick. Should’ve let WD2 be a feel good nonlethal teen movie. Both would’ve been great, but AAA will be AAA. Dunno what Legion will want and fail to be.
Ganjack Bogle Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about, it was planned to be just a pistol but someone higher up probably forced them to add in rifles and explosives. And I’m pretty sure if someone actually went out and slaughtered dozens of cops with a grenade launcher in S.F. they wouldn’t be portrayed as a hero lol
Astolfo Yeah, and we’re saying you can kill every gang member, civilian, and cop and no one reacts any differently. I think if the story wants to be as light as it was they should reflect it in the gameplay.

Many, many people have taken chunks of my footage and never credited me (looking at you, honest trailers). Whether it would have been legal or not, I always appreciate when someone goes out of their way to have my name listed when they use my footage, Thank you!
Well I looked through your channel. What footage are you talking about?
However, if they didn't want to credit me I had another option:

@@HaloofWar35276same here. The game is really good if you're not reading Twitter posts about it before playing.

Yeah watch dogs was popular but not that much and way less people bought bad blood
I played it because it came with the complete edition of watchdogs (which I was going to buy but came with my preorder of legion) and my biggest gripe is how short it was
i played bad blood too! the story was great but it was too short sadly and not much had it

Whitelight! Whitelight! Will we get a halloween video or is this your halloween video?

I always had a soft spot for this game, and then one time I was escaping police on a rainy night, and ended up in one of the disused train tracks. There, I accidentally found a dead body, which was ceremonially executed.

Not his daughter, his niece.
Hitman series might punish you for not hiding your bodies well enough, but nobody's made a game yet that I know of where you need to clean up your brass and wipe down your fingerprints.
and in watch dogs 2 you was supposed to "save the world" in story missions and then went on a killing spree in open world
If i ever did an anarchist gameplay it would probably be because i always end up accidentally killing people with my shit driving skills
I honestly like the original more than 2. Something about Chicago felt more fun than San Francisco.
I love the first one so much, and I love the second one, too..as long as I don't play through the story.
I liked both. I loved the second when I played it in 2017. But I truly, truly believe that a light hearted tone was not the way to go. I hope Legion finds a reasonable compromise.
@@Whitelight It was like watching a cartoon. Completely bonkers. I can't wait to see what you say when you review the second one...

👍
I think he did do a Skyrim episode! it wasn't quite this same format but it might be what you're looking for.
Tldr
Would've been wayyy cooler if they went for more of a psychological story, like what happens to a person when they try single handedly taking over the world, the ptsd, paranoia, depression, substances that they use to keep them going, and having aiden just lose everything just to stop those who have power
For that play far cry 3 and hellblade senuas sacrifice
So Mr Robot
@@siddharthsagar1506 nah those aren't the same, at least far cry, idk much about hellblade
This could've been a great modern take on things, far cry 3 saw jason thriving in a ruthless environment, he was the one with power, but watch dogs would've been the opposite, seeing a more human protagonist taking on the faceless corporation who runs the world all while trying and ultimately failing to keep his friends and families safe, always having to be on the run, cover his tracks, never getting a full nights sleep, and just getting to see Aiden use every bit of resource at his fingertips to make all his suffering worth it

I'm starting to think Watch Dogs Bad Blood is what I expected Watch Dogs 2 to be.

"Watchdogs went trough all the trouble to create an interesting concept and then proceeds to do everything it can to be as uninteresting as physically possible."
This pretty much describes Ubisofts philosophy on making games.

@@frogglen6350 *cough* *cough*
Dark Souls is an easy game since all you have to do is play the boss twice and remember the patterns.
Once you know the bosses its only a matter to remember what to do if A or B happens.
Watchdog 1 has terrible mouse control, and i do not play with a controller, even than, running in the open air with 4 ennemies able to shoot at you when 4-5 bullets kill you ded that are 💯 accuracy to perform the John wick melee kill is much harder or difficult to set up than beating any DS boss.
The game is easy if you just abuse the time slow and stay behind cover.
Which, is the total opposite of that.
If you want to prove me wrong, simple. Record an uncut video of you going trough a fight heavy mission without a silencer (or even with it) but since ur so gud and play Dak Suul you should do it without a silencer. Killing every single with a melee gun shooting finisher kill without dying once.

Though I have 2 remarks to make about the video:
- The surrender-blackout mechanic does exist in the game, you can perform it up till Act 3, after that the cops directly shots without notice (I believe it is tied to the story but i forgot the details of it).
- The E3 graphic settings does exist hidden in the PC game files, the early mods just activated them back. And by the latest updates of these mods, I can argue that the results looks fairly similar if not better than the demo (except from explosion effects which were better on the demo)
Again, thank you for this enjoyable video, I hope you will give us a same quality ones for other overlooked games such as AC Unity, Watch Dogs 2 and plz one for AC Origins.
the "E3 Graphics" are far from E3 Graphics

Me Too
Yeah, its reminds me of Gta 4 and John wick... The feeling that your not alone, but not safe either. Like uncertainty.
I hear it was developed by the guys who made Driver San Francisco.
Same i liked the car pyschics more
Playing with keyboard, in watch dogs you press the arrow key, the tires start to turn so the car doesn't do a big turn at the first moment.

I'm so glad you actually went into detail with the game and spoke about Alone.
The game soundtrack is also amazing. Try walking down the sidewalk at night while listening to a song, its immersive

($268 to 300 million)
GTA 5 was developed at a cost of $265 million (development cost was over $137 million) and made $1 billion in 3 days and sold 16.7 million copies assuming they were sold at $60 per copy (no reason for R* to discount the most hyped game of the year in only 3 days).
WD one of the greatest open world games ever created...
Wd 1
@@zobr0s77 And watch dogs 2
No.
No.
That's what I thought too.
SorryBones in beta it was planned for the only gun in wd1 to be the spec op 1911. Also only idiots like cops
They changed the feeling of the second game due to people complaint how dark the first game was.
You know you can complete the whole game without killing a single soul in watch dogs 2. I do not why why you're complaining.
Astolfo Yeah, and we’re saying you can kill every gang member, civilian, and cop and no one reacts any differently. I think if the story wants to be as light as it was they should reflect it in the gameplay.
I have only recently discovered your channel and already watched several of the videos(mostly AC and Forza/Crew). I must say, you are an amazing narrator. The comments are witty and the occasional inserts and/or references are a delight. Your sense of surprise/shock is hilariously well done and I absolutely love it. Thanks for all you do for these videos/reviews. Your work is outstanding.
