Can we go over the fact that ACU was the first AC game to have a 'crouch' button, in a stealth franchise.

    • @-space5615
      @-space5615 4 года назад +1090

Well it wasn't really a stealth franchise to begin with. It was more influenced by action games with social stealth as a gimmick. I think its a case of the mechanics not matching the fantasy the player expect a from a game called Assissins creed. I don't remember the Ezio trilogy having much stealth at all but it's been forever since I played them. I think AC3 was the first one to have traditional stealth in some capacity

I shouted an audible "oh my god, I LOVE YOU Whitelight!" when you said, "can this movement get any deeper? Yes! Just go play AC1 again~!" and began mentioning Animation-Cancelling's importance in Assassin's Creed. I could not believe it. Almost _no one_ actually talks about this, even _when_ they praise movement.
Aside from that small tidbit, this video is what I consider to be the definitive Discussion on Assassin's Creed Unity that currently exists on the Internet. You highlight the game's brilliance while not going easy on its BS moments, and that is _shockingly_ rare to see. It's completely understandable, of course; with a game this unique, this special, any of its champions would be unwilling to admit any fault, flaw or damage, but in revealing Unity as honestly as you possibly could, I think you do a far better job of selling people on its merits than any blind praise ever could.

@@civercras Thanks, Peivol! I'm definitely hoping that we'll once again see a game with movement _at least_ as varied and with as much player-expression available in it as we got with AC Unity. Ubisoft seem, for the time being, very wary of doing that kind of thing, but time will tell. Valhalla is bringing back Social Stealth and statistic-agnostic one-hit Stealth Kills, so that's a sure sign that, if nothing else, they're _listening._

And essentially killed the Assassins as an endearing faction in the process. I find this ubiquitous assassin/Templar melodrama in every game very annoying. Member the nemesis system? Don’t forget about the shitty sci-fi elements that shape the entire series and get shoved into every title despite how jarring it is to go from killing boar with a fucking spear to jogging down a crystalline space-hallway to get the magic golden apple!”
For once I want a protagonist to be like “You both suck, you’re both shitty - I don’t like either of you. I’m going to start my own secret club with blackjack and jezebels!” This series desperately needs some Jolee Bindo/Kreia shit to mix up the stale dynamic.

The media certainly played its part at the release of this game. It was something big, highly anticipated, and they didn't hesitate to replicate the facial bug a thousand times just for clickbait, even though it only occurred on one specific graphics card. It created a whole narrative around this game that, even if it's not polished, doesn't align with reality.
And I say this while playing the 1.0 version on disc to get 60 fps on PS5 (for some reason, the frame rate is unlocked in the launch version). It's easily playable, which I can't say about Cyberpunk at launch or even Jedi Survivor, which corrupted my 50-hour save. But as is common nowadays, games are released like this and eventually "fixed." The reception of Unity caused Ubisoft to abandon the game with minimal improvements and completely change the direction of the franchise. It's bizarre and sad.

If Ubisoft would be making RPG franchises I wouldn't mind, but that they force the formular on my beloved franchise in order to make it sell better just makes me cry, for it appears as if the consumer doesn't count. It might be that Vallhalla will be a very good game, but I know I won't play it for I won't be able to enjoy it due to the fact that it's just not my beloved Assassins Creed and I don't want to buy a product which makes me infinitely sad. Which is why I boycott every RPG AC, not because I think they suck as games but because they are just fundamentally wrong in an AC setting. Goddamit ubi, give me my Bayek sequel! I think they should have grander stories again, character sequels, important modern days with likable characters instead of... Layla... And not just release games with a setting for the sake of ticking it of but because it also makes sense in the context of that overarching story. He stabbed one guard except two. He didn't cover where he could cover. In other games, this clunky control scheme alone could have easily cost 4 out of 10 scores. AC Unity in Metacritic has solid 7 out of 10. Even with all the initial bugs, reviewers were quite favorable to this game.

That’s because Ubisoft listened to the gob Shite games media and ac RUclipsrs who made bank shit talking ac all day on RUclips for a year. They aren’t the actual AC fans. I played Unity at launch I never experienced any game breaking bugs or glitches that took the immersion from me. The media went crazy hating on this game and it was probably one of the best single player early next gen games of that time. My only problem with the game is there was and still Is no new game option in the main menu and you had to delete your progress to make a new game save. Yet now look at the ac games coming out today they don’t even compare to unity or any of its predecessors... as a fan of the series since the first game, I would say the last great ac game was with syndicate honestly.
I also think it’s because most of the big games companies have changed, they don’t listen to their actual target audience. Instead they focus too much on what their investors target audiences want. It’s why for example, we got no single player dlc for GTA 5, why ac is no longer ac anymore with no assassins and why Bethesda is a shell of what it used to be these days.
Greed and not listening to the true fanbase ruined AC just like most other franchises today. Odyssey and origins were good games but terrible assassins creed ones. Honestly not hyped for the new game but will be getting it anyway.

    • @matman000000
      @matman000000 4 года назад +44

The criticism was understandable. Unity came out at the height of AC fatigue. People were tired of the same gameplay loop. An evolution of the system, no matter how good, wouldn't suffice with such a terrible technical state. But with the new AC games downgrading everything that made the old games unique, people went back and rediscovered the now patched Unity.

    • @DOATECDIZZY
      @DOATECDIZZY 4 года назад +14

Mattchester I don’t think people were bored of the same gameplay or style at all? I never heard anyone saying that at the time. Assassins creed 4 is regarded as one of the best assassins creed games in the franchise (it was the second game to have a different gameplay style after revelations) and it came just before rogue and unity so I don’t really get what your saying there. Also most people I’ve met, myself included never experienced bugs on unity day 1 of launch that broke the game. I think the games media trashed unity over the no face bug and the sheeple gamers followed suit. I’ve been a long time fan of the series since the first game released years ago and I know unity is a great game through and through. There are better ac games like 2 and 4 but there are also worse ones like liberation and odyssey.

The thing about Arno that always struck me was the ending, as you mentioned, but I got a totally different message from it. In Arno, we see everything that could have gone wrong with Ezio's character. Forsaken by the Brotherhood which he helped to save, the woman he loved and his family put in the ground, and the man who trained him betrays him and tries to overthrow the Brotherhood. Unlike Ezio, he doesn't seem to make any real friends inside or outside of the Brotherhood, and is instead entirely alone. While Ezio got to experience love with Cristina and Caterina, and while he was hurt both times, it was not only something that made him stronger in the case of Cristina, but with Caterina he had already been so battle-hardened that he managed to push through. Arno, on the other hand, never got that because Elise was how she was.
That's why that "Leap Of Faith" at the end of the cutscene is so impactful for me. Arno has given up. He sees all the flaws in everything he's done while just trying to be a better man and find love, and he sees all the flaws in both sides of the Templar-Assassin conflict, because it cost him the love he was trying to pursue. So, ashamed of himself and his actions, abandoned, and alone, he commits a final "Leap Of Faith" to his death.

@YoStefan Well, depending on what he was talking about he's still accurate in his statement. During the times of Ancient Greece there wasn't really an Europe. Europe as a recognized Continent didn't pop up until 900 A.C. To compare ancient greece began a few yearhundreds B.C. So by distinguishing both periods you're effectively talking about two seperate epochs seperated by almost 1,000 years.
People routinely forget just how 'modern' our current names for countries are. Pretty much most modern countries and Continents that we have currently did not exist as a national identity a few yearhundreds ago. Especially Europe saw nation changing shifts pretty much every 3 to 4 decades. Most people don't know that Germany for example is a relatively 'fresh' Invention. Those territories used to be known as Cities and States owned by Prussia and Silesia, with Austria having also claims to certain territories due to noble standing. Poland also had strong claims to various 'german' and silesian territories, and had been a commonwealth with czechoslovakia at a point. Not to mention the Habsburg dynasty, who's Inbreeding and marriages routinely reshaped the political concepts of what 'Europe' was pretty much every decade.

You can only drink from the “heroes journey” well so many times before it becomes wallpaper. You spend too much time with the protagonist in AC games for the plot to not be - on some level - part character study. Self-destruction makes for a good character study. It’s more “Sisyphus” than “Odysseus” but as Odyssey proved no one’s a fan of these games for the plot alone. Though in this medium apparently nobody knows how to do a character study unless a fucking parental dynamic exists between the protagonist and some child-figure. What do some people call it? Your praises for the visual design, atmosphere, and opportunity for a wondrous and engaging interactive experience inside this game go a long way in shedding light on how easily overlooked things done so right can be (albeit, more understandably in the case of Unity, given its initial release state). The way you're able to describe the functionality of things like setting and a sense of place and how they add to or detract from the other aspects they perform in conjunction with, as well as in isolation, is commendable and very much appreciated; as are your comparisons to other media for illuminating contrast.

Okay another major problem is the history. The revolution almost gets ignored. Robbspiere is only at the very end. King Louie only shows up three times. Yeah, this is a complaint I had about this game for a long time. You don’t really play a part in shaping history in the game. They don’t address any of the themes of the revolution in the first place like class struggle. You could have place this story in any time period and it would have worked which is not a good thing. Origins and Odyssey do a much better job at this.

    • @LadyTylerBioRodriguez

Guy who caused Reign of Terror ranks higher then random silversmith.

    • @LadyTylerBioRodriguez

I found that I could "ledge grab" or break my fall by pressing and holding parkour down right before I hit the ledge. I used it all the time. I assumed everyone knew. The older AC games had lots of movement abilities that were discovered through trial and error, and were not spelled out to the player. In addition, there are movement and combat animations that are held over from older games. The game doesn't teach you these, so it's like a little bonus for long-time fans of the series.

I love Unity’s slower combat. In previous titles you feel almost weightless, constantly slashing and swiping like your weapons were made out of air. Also enemies felt like they had zero training whatsoever. In unity it actually feels like there’s weight behind Arno’s movements and enemies pose a real threat and actually require you to take your time with them. I love how they gang up too instead of standing around just watching their friends get stabbed to death. It all felt real and engaging when in previous games you could just turn your brain off and chain kill a whole room in 3 seconds. Unity keeps me on my toes and makes me look cool doing it. Best combat in the series imo

the only thing that doesn't look cool in combat is with counter attacking and makes arno look so sluggish compared to how he fights in the cinematic trailers and the dead kings one especially in game cutscenes

If by "pose a real threat" you mean you just have to wait for the bright red icon to tell you press a button then yes they are very threatening

@@JohnDoe-hj9fh Lol this post is a year old but I guess I’ll entertain your L take. What I meant is that instead of just parry killing everything in sight, mobs of enemies will try to ambush you or shoot you in order to help their friends. In older AC games groups of enemies kinda just stand around and take turns attacking you. In unity you actually have to think before you take on a group of Frenchies

@@BedfastSquid Yeah you have to think about when the big flashing red icon appears. It's like Jedi survivor's combat but neutered to have no skill attached to it. Also who cares how old a comment is, it's not expired food or anything and you literally responded the next day. "I'll entertain your L take" how do you do fellow kids indeed lol

For me, the end of the 1700's is the perfect setting for an AC game. I love the outfits and the architecture, as well as the historical context. There's just so much potential. I hope they revisit this setting, maybe even with a sequel to Unity

Wendell Novais yeah, it's so depressing. I wish they'd come back to more modern settings. Even the medieval era would be cool, not from the prespective of the vikings though.

I always loved the older settings but I agree. The setting of Origins and AC1 are up there in my preferences but I love that 18-19th century saga from Black Flag to Syndicate.
But then, maybe that's because the bulk of the series has been cast there.
Connor and Arno deserve sequels in some respect, I believe.

When Unity came out, I thought it took some inspiration from Dishonored: Arno had a similar appearance to Corvo (both having long, sleek, hooded trenchcoats), his Phantom blade was a clear copy of Daud's wrist crossbow, the stealth mechanics suddenly became more fleshed out, and both Paris and Dunwall had a similar environmental color palette (cold blue shadows with warm sun lighting). Even some UI elements had this shattered glass effect that was also present in Dishonored. In retrospect, I always wanted AC to take more inspiration from Dishonored and Hitman, because those two games are all about the art of the kill - how you approach your target, what tools you use for the job, how do you exploit your surroundings and how you kill (or spare) your target. These games give you so much variety and creativity that you could replay the same mission over and over and still find new entertaining ways of eliminating your target. And I think this is the core issue that Assassin's Creed, as a franchise, always kinda had. I thought Unity was a first step in the right direction. But then Origins happened and suddenly AC did a 180, and is now an RPG franchise. From a gameplay standpoint, it is rejecting everything that made or could have made it a trully unique franchise.
