Now for a Diesel Rail Car - ‘Rote Brummer’ / ‘the Red Buzzer’. New in 1962, this Fleischmann® Set #1370/2 features a Driver and a Trailer unit of the DB type VT989 ( 0-4-0 BO X 2 ).
Hey, don’t forget the 1970 Fleischmann® #5569 track cleaning car. and the 1957 #1452 die-cast DB flat wagon.
Pretty neat in that this model featured directional lighting, optional lighted interiors, and an available two car add on dummy set for BIG city use. Actually, these were mostly found on branch lines where there was no electrification or a regular loco was too expensive or heavy to operate. About a thousand sets were built in Germany from 1950 to 1958, they had several versions that included one, two, or three connected units. Sometimes, as with most other European trains, they sometimes towed a freight wagon or two along with their passengers. The interiors were spartan with flip-able seat backs to allow for change in direction and often bare bulbs illuminated the interiors.
This second generation unit was powered by two diesel motors, versus the single motor in the VT 95 prototype. They were quick to accelerate to their 90kph ( 56mph ) top speed, and their air-brakes slowed them almost as quickly. Ours is ‘lightening quick' at 84.93kph ( 52.77mph ) at 50% power and has the ‘trailer unit’ fitted with factory interior lighting.
For Part Two, we connect Fleischmann’s® non-powered ÖBB set #1373/2 from 1965 in order to get close to ‘Red, White, & Blue’ for the USA Independence Day Holiday. BTW, this unit features directional lighting in one trailer and it averaged 0kph ( 0mph ) at any power level when set on my track by itself - LOL !
