The G16’’s would be a great choice. There’s plenty in the UK, so it appeals to that market. It appeals to the South African market. It even appeals to the Australian market, as a pair of them were purchased by the puffing billy railway, and one of them is in operational condition. I’ve ridden behind it, a grand engine
Interesting choice of models that I largely agree with. A few errors though in the description of the real locos which really must be corrected. 1. 111 The Great Bear. It was withdrawn from service because the boiler became life expired and as it was a 'one-off' there was no replacement boiler, also Churchward had lost interest and there was no real need for it. More importantly it was not rebuilt as a Saint, Saint George. It had more in common with the Castle Class and was rebuilt into Castle Class 111 Viscount Churchill. Also one of the photos shown of the Great Bear is in fact a 47XX 2-8-0. 2. The CIE locomotive. A number of important errors here. It was not a steam turbine powered locomotive at all, it was more conventional. It had 4 cylinders basically like a normal steam locomotive, a turbine it was not! The wheel arrangement was not 2-Co-Co-2, it had twelve wheels, six on each bogie like a Co-Co diesel loco but as it was a steam locomotive and a tank engine it was in fact an 0-6-6-0T! And astonishingly no mention was made at all of the fact that part of the reason for its construction was to make use of the only fuel that Ireland had in abundance which was peat, or 'turf' as it was known, hence the loco was known as the 'Turf Burner.' Interesting article but please get your facts right.
The engine that is most conspicuous by never having been available as a ready-to-run model is the L&NWR Claughton 4-6-0. They were the mainstay of the West Coast Mainline from Euston to Carlisle, and, after the grouping, also worked on the Glasgow & South Western and Midland lines. One even survived nationalisation ...6004.
The Great Bear. An iconic locomotive that stands very little chance of being reproduced today so a quality model would be very very welcome. Great video, keep that good work! Thank you for posting!👍
Hi Hylt. Being a GWR fan, I'd definitely buy a Great Bear. However, I reckon Hornby know their way around GWR locos, but Accurascale would probably do it just as well and cheaper. Jago Hazzard made an excellent film on the Decapod. Ah, William Francis: It's just 20 minutes down the road from me! I've got up close to it several times. Never seen it in steam, though. A very enjoyable video. Looking forward to part 2.
The Great Bear has always been one of my most favorite prototypes, I remember back in 2010 a couple of us were planning on making our own scratch build replica models of the locomotive. (This never happened) 14 years on she still hasn't been produced but I was always hoping Hornby or Bachmann might have a crack at making her.
I would absolutely love to get a NGG16 locomotive! Ride behind these on the WHR and have always loved them since. There’s also an NGG16 on the Puffing Billy Railway in Australia 😁
I personally would love to see the TGR (Tasmanian Government Railways) K1 class garrets of which two were built. numbered K1 and K2 respectively, they were built by Beyer Peacock and were among the first commercial garrets in the world, or at least their home of Australia. K2 was sadly scrapped, but K1 was shipped over to Wales where she resides to this day. Another is the ASG (Australian Standard Garret). These were built in a desperate bid to help unify motive power on Australia's scattered 3ft, 6in cape gauge lines. They were intended to be the primary source of motive power during WW2, but most arrived too late to serve that purpose. Larger railways such as QR, SAR (South Australian railways not South African railways) and the WAGR had numerous problems with them, leading to a short service life of hardly even 9 years in most cases. Other railways, such as the TGR, Fyansford cement railway and the Emu Bay Railway had much more success with the garrets, but in time they went away from here too. The book 'Australia's Garratt' by Robert Butrims gives and in-depth history into these engines, even if the information is a tad outdated.
The K1 and K2 were not just among the first, but were the first two Garrett locomotives built. K1 being the first built is why Beyer Peacock went to the effort of saving it from scrapping in Tasmania in the late forties and shipping it back to the UK for preservation.
Interesting selection of locomotives. Being a GWR person the Great Bear would be the choice for me. Hornby might me right for this one as they already make a castle and a king. Also a re- tooled saint class as Lady of Legend is also on my wish list. A really unusual one might be James Pearson's monster 9 foot single wheeler but that was broad gauge.I like your other choices too. Cheers Paul.
I’d forgotten about some of these and didn’t know about others ! Not sure about the fascination modellers have for one offs , I’d much rather see some pregrouping locomotives or at the other end DMUs or EMUs . I think the G16 Garratt is a possibility , not sure about the others ……but then who would have thought a Leader or DHPC1 would appear !
Erm CC1 was not turbine driven. It had conventional piston valve cylinders, 2 per bogies. It was 0-6-6-0. What was special is that it was designed to burn peat, not coal. Designed by bullied it was the last steam loco built in Ireland
A fun video on some unique locos. The big thing for manufacturrers is can they get value for money from the tooling? With one off locos that means variations and a a variety of liveries. A good example is Hornby's Hush Hush. They brought it out in the battleship grey, plus apple green, plus a steam generator vesion. There were also the streamlined W1s which I presume used the same chassis with a different body and again they've done them in several liveries including some which I believe it never actually appeared in. Of the ones you showed I think the decapod and fury are the ones I'd consider getting.
EE-1 😍 I don't even have a model railway but I'd definitely be interested in an EE-1 in NER livery, it's a really boxy design but the potential it held was simply beautiful. Such a shame that the timing sucked, coming in just before the First World War. Those two small Garratts are really sweet too, you've reminded me just how long it is since I last visited Porthmadog. Time to plan a weekend break, I feel 😁
I agree with wanting to see The Great Bear as a OO-scale model, but for the time being, at least we have her in Train Simulator. Incidentally, the add-on includes both real and fictional liveries; BR express blue is one of the latter, and it looks really strange on this big Pacific. As for the North Eastern EE1, I forgot she even existed. In any case, that would look good alongside Heljan's model of the ES1, although I don't think the two classes ever met in real life.
Some very interesting choices there Hylt. Now lets see who of the manufacturers are listening. Enjoyed this 'something a little bit different' think you could do more of this.
A great idea and some great choices. Ever since seeing one on a TV show called "Monster Moves" I'd love to see a ready to run model of the South African 15F but to run on OO/HO track on my British layout a degree of licence would be needed to change its wheel gauge. Wonderful engine.
Very interesting and I do like your choices of locomotives. My interest is in American locomotives like the "Kosciusko" that is a 4-4-0 but the cab is so 1800's. I do like this format and I'm looking forward to the layout update. Gret video, Jersey Bill
Id love to see the Geoghegan Guinness narrow gauge locos in 009! Would be very handy for small industrial layouts set in breweries and factories, where something like a Quarry Hunslet wouldn’t really make sense.
Great suggestions! I agree, that would be amazing. The Guinness brewery is a fascinating subject for modelling, something I would like to take a crack at one day.
The steam generator on the fury would almost be unrealistic, as it is said it moved move being hauled by other engines than under its own power. Would be a cool model, it looks powerful
Some nice locos there….be quite refreshing to see some of them developed…..to pot with accuracy…give them some unauthentic liveries for us any runs. A nice EE1 in lined Black…or the South African narrow gauge in Caledonian Blue…..🏴
Speaking as a South African I would also love to see an NGG16 and hpw about an NG15 while I am at it Backwoods Minatures made the NGG16 as a kit, but I belive it wasn't easy to make. The NG 6 might also be a nice model as it is popular with the Live steam people. I don't think there are any in the UK yet.
They made a NGG16 as a Large Scale model some years ago - back then it was R30k, now I'm sure over R100k. Of course Riekus has his 1:24 SAR stuff too :)
I love the locos you've picked. The EE1 is firm faviourite for me alongside an EF/EB1. Very unlikely to be made especially as Judith Edge make a kit. Whilst I feel confident assembling, painting is another one with that loco with the lining. The Decapod will probably end up being made by KR models - not that I necessarily believe that's for the best. Agree otherwise with all the manufacture choices though that the CC1 would be strictly IRM rather than the UK sister brand. Great shout with the Garret's! It could really open up to SA market as well. For me a massive omission is the GNR K2 and subsequent Scottish variants. A V4 and K4 would also be very welcome as a WHL modeller. I reckon the V4 has a chance with the new build coming to market. I just hope it's Bachmann rather than Hornby for this one as Bachmann tend to have consistently good new models if pricey, whereas Hornby can be more hit (P2/2MT) and miss (W1/Black 5). A HR Castle as well would be great to go alongside the Jones Goods.
Cheers my friend. Indeed, I love the look of the EE1, though as some folks have pointed out, seems I havent got my history quite right on some of them. I would LOVE a K2, thats definitely one I would be very keen on and definitely the K4 Great Marquess at some point, I think actually, it's worthing doing a list focused primarily on the WHL and Scottish region entirely now... you've got me thinking! Cheers for the suggestions. I've got 2 of those Jones Goods on order, it's my most anticipated so far.
Top subject presented with your usual dynamic enthusiasm ................(anything is possible) and given your track record who knows if a manufacturer decides to do some actual research and take the plunge.
I think first there is a need to produce the pre grouping popular (say 100+ manufactured) locomotives used by the most companies. (this would make a lot of company livery options) Also why restrict to OO and OO9 there are a lot of world locos which could use OOf and HOf (Z gauge track) and also OOm and HOm using 1m gauge or TT track. I would like to see the full range of Garrett products in all gauges.
Given Hornby's fragile finances these days, a good way to bring new models to the market would be to adapt existing toolings, like what they did with the B17/5 which uses the chassis of the previous B17s. Some of their existing toolings have a lot of potential. They can make a pre-grouping D16, a B12 fitted with experimental heated water feed apparatus, 0-8-0 Sentinels and the EMR Class 810s with few modifications. I know these aren't the type of one off experimental locos you were talking about, just thought I'd give some ideas. Edit: The lazily streamlined GWR King and Castle would be easy to produce also.
Hey Azuma, Great point! Leveraging existing toolings is definitely a smart, cost-effective approach for Hornby. I really appreciate your suggestion though, even if it's not a one-off, it's a good discussion. I wonder how long this dip period will last for them?
There are a few issues to consider before anyone considers making ready to run locos. Potential sales probably being the overriding issue. Nearly all the locos you listed were one-off construction, some with very short lifespans. This severely limits the market and taking into account the research, design and tooling costs it is unlikely that any manufacturer would take the risk apart from possibly Heljan who seem to like obscure locos. Should of them take the plunge, I'd be surprised if the rrp wasn't prohibitive!

Yes. William Frances would be fantastic in 00 gauge or O gauge. And yes, well and truly for a NGG16 or NGG13. In 009 and 0.16.5 gauge. Even a rail lister would be fantastic as well. What gets me there is a big following for South African Railways and in gauge 16mm from battery operated to live steam. So if so liked it really makes you question the main steam manufacturers why arnt they doing these in smaller scales. There missing out big time. If any of them do this it would make me collect or even make me want to get back into model railways again.
Hello, thanks for watching, agreed, if one of them took the leap to produce these in smaller gauges, I have no doubt it would bring new enthusiasts into the hobby-as you say, encourage many to return!
I would love to see a Drummond LSWR Paddlebox 4-6-0. Odd looking but also very handsome I feel!

It was Britain's first ever Pacific locomotive so it deserves to be produced in model form
A barlcay 0-6-0 side tank is an obvious target to accompany the 0-4-0 saddle tank.
Paddlebox!
PAddlebOX! 😎
The one I'm interested is the William Francis. I have a light railway layout project that would use it properly.
Would love to see that last Garratt😍
The most likely to get into production might be Fury since it should be able to use an existing Royal Scot mechanism.
The Great Bear has always been one of my most favorite prototypes, I remember back in 2010 a couple of us were planning on making our own scratch build replica models of the locomotive. There's 2 in Australia but only one working, gotta have spare parts so buy 2 lol
Great video Hylt! Totally agree that someone should make Garrett's in 009, but fingers crossed it's just a matter of time!
Dapol seem to primarily specialise on GWR locos at the moment, so I would say they would be a good alternative if accurascale weren’t available

Accurascale is a good choice for the CC1, they literally just announced they’re making an Irish hunslet loco. So, not off the table

@@roundhousetrainspotting Yes. Those ancient locomotives have tons of character.
The Great Bear was converted to a Castle class, number 111 Viscount Churchill.
