The thing underneath the taillamp is the water filler cap. Since Rheneas is a well-tank engine, the filler cap is located on the rear, just like his real-life basis, Dolgoch on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales.
Rheneas is not a well-tank; well tanks have the water between the frames, above the axles and below the boiler. Douglas- a narrow gauge locomotive who also runs on the talylln railway is a well tank, and has water filler caps under the boiler. The locomotive that became Tom Rolt on the Talylln railway (known better as Irish Pete back then) also was a well-tank before conversion to side tanks. Bellerophon and the other Haydock Foundry shunters are well tanks for a standard gauge example. Rheneas/Dolgoch just have their water tanks in the cab. I dont know if theres a designated name for that since its so rare.
@@Orlandov12 "Dolgoch has two water tanks - the main well tank between the frames and a smaller back tank at the rear of the cab." Yes, is a Well Tank.
Rheneas: I really could use a fresh coat of paint. (Post animated credits scene) Victor: I hear you’ve been looking for a yellow engine, well, I think I found him. Rheneas: TA-DAAA (Blue Mountain Mystery)
Fortunately my Rheneas in the yellow livery does not have any of the quality issues as seen on Sam's model. He is a great little runner and is a joy to watch with passenger coaches or slate wagons.
Oh, that is Rheneas in a yellow livery that was seen at the end of the special Blue Mountain Mystery. His actual livery in the show is vermilion, a sort of orange reddish colour, with black and gold lining and brass fittings and Bachmann has done him in that livery.
This was probably done as a joke regarding Duncan not yet returning since the premise of the movie was about Luke feeling guilty for possibly getting a yellow engine that arrived with him scrapped. Fortunately the yellow engine was revealed to be Victor.
@@joshuaW5621from what I understand about the making of BMM, the modeling crew actually went to the Talyllyn Railway to get dimensions off the real engines so they could adapt the Skarloey models to be more accurate to their real life counterparts. From what I know the actual reason why he got painted yellow was because in blue mountain mystery he got severely scraped up when he escaped the bridge collapse at the blue mountain quarry and got a new coat of paint after.

Hey Sam, I would love to see you review the (and pardon the suggestion) Heljan OO9 Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Baldwin 2-4-2T. I was really surprised by the quality, detail and performance!
I think this is the first time Sam's Trains got a Bachmann USA model without the catalog pamphlet! This model was released in the American market first, but it seems like Bachmann is localising all of their Thomas 009 and N scale models in Britian with no packaging changes (intended for ages 14+). This model costs around $90 at most American model train sellers. This yellow Rheneas depicts him at the end of Blue Mountain Mystery. Rheneas got his paint scratched during a runaway at the beginning of the special, and was painted yellow because Thomas was looking for a yellow engine in the special.
Can we expect more Thomas and friends characters? Rebecca is coming out this year from what I’ve heard and Bachmann just announced Stanley, and they have released Beau! Love your videos, keep it up!
I would love to see your review of the Thomas N scale range! It's also a big step up from their HO/OO range. More HO narrow gauge reviews would be great too! I think Peter Sam is my favourite, but they're probably all of a similar quality to what you saw here. I will say, my own Rheneas (in the orangish/red livery) did not come with any of the quality issues you saw, so either this is an issue with the yellow ones or you just got unlucky (or I got lucky).
Sam your channel content is fantastic but the thing that impresses me the most is your character mate because your heart is always in the right place. All the best.
Even though it’s the yellow, blue mountain mystery ending rheneas and I think we all prefer the classic red version. This model is still very accurate the the model used in the cgi and model series show, well done Bachmann and well done Sam’s Trains, epic upload as always!
Good review! I think the ttte narrow gauge range is definitely better than the OO range, but it’s still not amazing. Also these are made by Bachmann USA so I’m not totally surprised by the slightly poor quality… it’s no excuse, I just thought I’d mention that.
I don’t know if you were aware Sam, but I think Trainworld has the Yellow Rheneas on sale for $89.99 USD, and one of the only few T&F models to be on sale on that website to my knowledge… Also him being yellow was an in-joke for a movie of Blue Mountain Mystery as Thomas was looking for a yellow engine, and well, he found him 😂 I wouldn’t be surprised if they were gonna be making plans for making Dolgoch just like how Bachmann converted Skarloey’s model into 3 versions of Talyllyn, eventually that is after the latter is released earlier next year (give-or-take, based on the images seen). It would be interesting to see you compare the N scale versions of Thomas and Friends models to their HO/OO counterparts due to them not having the eye mechanisms you weren’t a fan of, as well as the fact that Gordon is now being released soon, so there’s that as well…! 😬
I love it but so small. I might start getting those type of engines at some point. Still looking for a new train. Hope to see more awesome trains soon. Keep being awesome
Im glad to see you reviewing the thimas narrow gauge items, i absolutely love these! From ecperience, Skarloey and Peter Sam are great, although Skarloey has trouble on inclines and heavy loads. Probobly would skip Rusty if I were you though O.o
I would have removed the slate loads from out of the wagons and installed sugar cubes for the Thomas and friends line-up review. Maybe even tack glue on some googly eyes on the rolling stock as well. Cheers!
Yellow paint (notoriously one of the hardest colors to paint, and I can attest!) plus a high gloss finish is a bit of a recipe for disaster. The imperfections definitely stand out.
As someone who grew up with the American version shining time station I have very fond memories of Thomas and especially seasons 1-4 I liked both narrator’s Ringo Starr and George Carlin but I always thought certain characters suited one particular narrator or another depending on the episode
Coming soon... Skarloey as Talyllyn Railway number 1 "Talyllyn". We need a green "Dolgoch" version of this as Talyllyn Railway number 2. As for quality, it's Bachmann USA vs Bachmann Europe. 😉
1) Should customizing skills be strong enough, this model can be transformed into Smudger (green and no. 7 before becoming a generator) 2) At first long ago, I thought it'd be Duncan, but nope, it's Rheneas (originally there WAS a plan of manufacturing Duncan for that scale, but it got permanently scrapped, possibly due to someone complaining that his basis was not accurate enough as well as his real life basis design is too complicating to do)
The last part isn't true. Bachmann didn't cancelled plans for Duncan just because of one person complaining about it. They cancelled it due to design complications.
Yellow Rheneas is from a post credit scene of a Thomas the Tank Engine special movie. Compared to the regular Rheneas this is as much as a novelty to TTTE modellers as the gold plated Flying Scotsman is to realistic modellers
Hey Sam have you ever thought about moving the points to the other side of the N Scale layout that way you are not doing your testing on or near a dead zone Also while you are there add in a straight section so you have more room for coupling up a consist just my 2 cents worth
Great model and so glad Bachmann are making narrow gauge range. Something if Hornby had the license they would never do unless they went for narrow gauge on TT:120! A think a nice quick fix for the cab would be to simply print the detail or use a single piece moulding. I also dare say that DCC is going to be even more important for younger children especially if used via a app. I might be mistaken but I think these are Bachmann USA rather than Bachmann Europe commissioned (certainly the case with the soon to be released Talyllyn Fletcher Jennings) Unless I'm going mad this this review briefly appear and then went down?
My dream has come true! I also have bought three rheneas models, and I have not seen the manufacturing defects and paint issues with your model. the valve gear is a bit finicky though.

With Christmas coming up, have you thought of getting some N scale Christmas trains or at least some Christmas cars for like doing your Christmas running sessions and live streams
When i got Bachmann Peter Sam, he had very little paint issues (other than a little scrape on the side of his saddletank, and it was annoying) ans is the most detailed and high powered of the range. Most of the Skarloey Railway 009 scale are based on their measured CGI designs of the Talyllyn Railway, and are the most durable of the Thomas Bachmann range, along with the N Scale line (Need to mention that they're way too sturdy for a child to play with, they're more geared for 14 year olds and over)
Oh and Sam I am down for N scale Thomas products . Tho some grahamfarish ones would be cool too . Like there standard 5 for N scale . It looks good and seems quality enough to get a review from it and a good review out of that Anyways sam . Bye and enjoy Christmas
@@SamsTrains wait … dose that mean you had something similar already in your head for a review then ? Now I am curious even more so then before Oh and now that you have both wagons and coaches . Maybe do a double running session of the new engine with the wagons and the A4 with the coaches . Now that would be a nice idea for a running session on the haulage part test that you do
Unfortunately the cost of the licence to use the Thomas brand adds to the price. Its why Hornby stopped and my very few Heritage railways run Thomas days now.
In the model series he was orange while the railway series he was red, reason for this was due to marketing and toy reasoning for the model series. Pretty sad that the model is so expensive, kinda put me off getting him but good to know hes reliable
I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Rheneas. If you haven’t already Sam, check him out in the original Rev. W. Awdry books. I have to say I’m not a great fan of the TV series. So for me he should be red! Nice little engine. Performance seems pretty good for an "N gauge " mechanism. But yes, he is expensive !
@ I was 60 this August ( not quite sure how that happened 🤣) and basically I learned to read with the Railway Series 😊. A neighbour gave me a copy of "the three Railway Engines" when I was 4! The rest is, as they say, history. If I work for French Railways (SNCF) today it is a direct result of that! I must admit I have a bit of a problem with Britt Allcroft’s TV series. The first seasons with Ringo Starr were fine but they went rapidly downhill for me as soon as they started writing new scenarios for TV which were a long way from the Rev’s originals.
Very nice. Lack of cab detail is sad for the price, but fair for the market. DCC is rare to see on 009 layouts, and generally only seen if the layout is fully sound. And I'd say that for a model like this, it's better to maximise the weight than make provisions for a DCC socket and speaker and whatnot. But, modellers could always blank off the cab (as I believe the original TV series models had) for DCC stuff. It's also nice to see a 009 model running on accurate track. 009 of course being a scale 2'3, which the Talyllyn and Corris (and the modern GVT, as the original GVT was 2'4.5) are. Could you perhaps review some 3d printed models from DoubleM Models and May Traction & Railworks that use the Kato 109 chassis?
I don't know if you know this, Sam, but despite how Rheneas's name is pronounced in the show, if you heard audio readings of the original Railway Series stories, his name is actually pronounced Ren-e-us (kinda like how you pronounce "Phineas").
Never heard of a Yellow Rheneas. The proper stories are those by the Rev Awdry which I think go up to book 26 . Looks alright but grossly overpriced for a kids toy . Bachmann are specialist and extremely successful at extracting the max cash from their customers !
Since you covered Yellow Rheneas Does this mean the other members of the SKR will be making an appearance soon? Also the wonky is kinda funny, as during one of his episodes his valve gear jammed
The thing underneath the taillamp is the water filler cap. Since Rheneas is a well-tank engine, the filler cap is located on the rear, just like his real-life basis, Dolgoch on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales.

It looks good and seems quality enough to get a review from it and a good review out of that
Anyways sam . Bye and enjoy Christmas
Awesome - I'll get to that!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains wait … dose that mean you had something similar already in your head for a review then ?
Now I am curious even more so then before
Oh and now that you have both wagons and coaches . Maybe do a double running session of the new engine with the wagons and the A4 with the coaches . Now that would be a nice idea for a running session on the haulage part test that you do
i have peter sam and rusty and love them
Unfortunately the cost of the licence to use the Thomas brand adds to the price. Its why Hornby stopped and my very few Heritage railways run Thomas days now.
Why does Mattel have to make it so damn expensive?
@@joshuaW5621+ It's not really just Mattel, it's every other model railway company these days (even Hornby)
I think anything related to Thomas will be quite popular on your channel. 😉
We'll see! I'll do more if so :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
In the model series he was orange while the railway series he was red, reason for this was due to marketing and toy reasoning for the model series. Pretty sad that the model is so expensive, kinda put me off getting him but good to know hes reliable
Personally I like the varying colors of the model versions. The orange looks good on him, not a fan of the yellow.
Including two versions of Rheneas in the lineup, but no Sir Handel is a strange move, imo.
Sam you should try a Heljan class 57 from rails in fgw livery!! Almost half price 😊
That does sound good - thanks for that I'll look into it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
So this rheneas isn’t his normal colour he looked like this once at the end of Blue mountain mystery
Yes that's right! Thanks for the info :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A history to Rheneas character in a nutshell. I think you got a defective model. But Rheneas looks great.
Thanks a lot - yeah hopefully they're not all like this - he does look good!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Forrest - I think the books have a lot more charm to them don't they? Saw some at the Awdry extravaganza!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains PS the surname is Forrest but my forename is Robin 🤣
Cool to see this. By the way does normal Bachmann thomas work on standard British OO track?
Thanks! Yeah he does - the HO/OO range will work on HO/OO track!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I gotta tell ya, some of the other narrow gauge engines are quite hefty, they got die cast boilers, and they are bigger so they are heavier
Reminds me of the loco's on the Groudle glen railway in the Isle of mann
I would like to see Thomas and friend n scale review video
I'm looking into it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It's odd how this model is so much cheaper in the US, as Trainworld has this at $109/£84.10 normally (with the sale price being currently $89/£68.67).
The high price is likely due to the high demand for that sort of chassis, used in other 009 kits.
Hmm I wonder - usually high demand leads to lower prices!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another thought, Bachmann also makes the Thomas characters in On30.
I'd love to try those!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yeah absolutely - that's what I thought! And that is fair - certainly can't complain about the way it runs!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've been trying to find both Skarloey & Rheneas for a long time for good price. Maybe I'll be able to find them one day.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Thanks J&W - good luck with the search!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A nice little Loco...😉🚂🚂🚂
it seems bachmann are stepping their game up a bit
Their N and OO9 models are their best in my opinion!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
seeing the Alice loco made me want to see bachmann make the cabless versions of Skarloey and Rheneas like in the railway series
Hi Sam if you think 009 is small you have to try T gauge from tgauge uk. God bless
And Z gauge too.
This isn’t what I asked for, but it’s what I’ll take.
haha!
I don't know if you know this, Sam, but despite how Rheneas's name is pronounced in the show, if you heard audio readings of the original Railway Series stories, his name is actually pronounced Ren-e-us (kinda like how you pronounce "Phineas").
Ren-ne-us like wren knee us
Never heard of a Yellow Rheneas. The proper stories are those by the Rev Awdry which I think go up to book 26 . Looks alright but grossly overpriced for a kids toy . Bachmann are specialist and extremely successful at extracting the max cash from their customers !
haha yeah it's a strange one - just odd that Bachmann did this I suppose - do like the livery though! Thanks for sharing - Sam :)
I’d love for you to make a 009 loop attached to your normal layout with a transfer station x
I'd love to do that too!! :D
@ I bet it woudnt be too hard to do and you can make a new scenery section
Can you PLEASE do the review of the Bachmann Stanier mogul No 2965 on Wednesday?
I do have a review of that coming soon, but not Wednesday!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@ Message from the chalkboard. 🤣Alright then, listen to me! How about the Hatton’s Bluebell P Class, Accuarascale Bluebell P Class, and lots more.
Since you covered Yellow Rheneas
Does this mean the other members of the SKR will be making an appearance soon?
Also the wonky is kinda funny, as during one of his episodes his valve gear jammed
Maybe!! :D
Bachmann HO scale Beau doesn’t have moving eyes…it would be a great one to review!
Thanks so much for that, that's very kind! Yeah I'd like to try that :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Amazon Australia has them for less than 100 quid, I think you’re a bit unlucky in the UK when it comes to the price
Rehneas is usually in orange not red
But he was red in the railway series
