I only found 2 songs on this album that I liked when I bought it. Been a KISS fan since 1974.

@@danthaman03 haha. Well, in a nutshell, my main issue with sonic boom was that the first song is great the last song is great and almost everything else in between, to me, is almost totally inconsequential. I mean like just so boring and pointless that it might as well never have existed. And we waited how many years for that album like 8 or 10 years?? And then what we get is Russian roulette and yes I know nobody's perfect?? Danger us?? Really? I was just very disappointed and didn't really see a reason for putting that out, while also advertising Paul's vocal troubles all over the album and Tommy and Eric in the Ace and Peter makeups--Which I know not everybody has a problem with, but I do. I mean if they' d done all that and the album had been great, okay maybe we can talk. But totally mediocre is not what I waited a decade for.
I think with sonic boom I just feel like I went to a car lot to buy a Porsche and somebody tried to sell me a mo-ped and tell me it was a Porsche. And then I got home and found out it was a mo-ped.
I mean I do get why some people like it...no ballad, they did try to kind of give it that old '70s sound, to some extent, it just wasn't enough for me because of the lack of overall quality of most of the songs.

'Monster' came out in these times when radio, MTV, and the internet have long forsaken heritage bands and rock and roll. It's a great record with great sound which the band obviously knew would never get close to mass public acceptance compared to their heyday. It's the Monster 'Spider' staging that was criminally under-used, far better than the EOTR offering. I agree with your take on the 70s Paul Stanley vocals, maybe now Paul should revisit the original 3 albums.

Another one of my top 10 KISS studio albums.
Long Way Down, Freak, All For The Love Of Rock And Roll, Right Here Right Now are my favorites on the album
Also really like Out Of This World, Hell Or Hallelujah, Last Chance
For me, a MUCH better album than Sonic Boom

I'm always impressed by KISS and especially Paul Stanley's ability to be 100% into selling you their current product that's "just as good as Destroyer"... until the next record comes out and they admit they weren't very proud of that last record, it's this new one that's "just as good as Destroyer".
As for the sound issues? I think they were trying to go for a Hotter Than Hell type vibe with everything sounding distorted, bassy and murky. Except on that album it was an over correction to the rather thin and plain production of the debut and a testament to the fact Kerner and Wise really didn't know what the hell they were doing in terms of recording a band like KISS. In simpler language, it's not a production choice they should be emulating intentionally.

I thought I was watching a video about a Kiss album but all of a sudden you were doing an in-depth look at classic poetry. I seriously thought I was transported to a Shakespeare discussion for a minute, those lyrics were words transported here from another realm. I'm glad you did such a close up look at them although our mortal minds probably can't comprehend their greatness. I still have a bit of college left to do, if I wind up in another literature class I will certainly try my own hand at an analysis of Take Me Down Below.
After going through a bit of the album I think they might have used that production as a means of trying to mask deficiencies in performance. It didn't work, but it kind of sounds like an attempt to muddy the waters a bit. Also bands shouldn't produce their own albums.

Slaughter produced all of their albums and it worked just fine for them until the landscape changed. It wouldn't have mattered who produced them after the fact.
Radio, MTV & the record labels just threw bands like slaughter under the bus.
Also:Tommy & Eric weren't pretending too be Peter and Ace , They play characters.

I'll admit. I'm like you. I normally don't like to exaggerate but I feel you are right about that first statement. I'm sure their record company, whoever it is now, has a few more back compilation releases on the shelf. Or, perhaps, some DVD releases. Anyway - I purchased Sonic 🤑🤢🤮 Puke and the only tune I liked was Moderrn Day Delilah. Not sure what happened after that. Didn't even know Monster existed 🤷 Is that the one that was released exclusively with the partnership with Walmart stores? I rarely shop there so, like I said, I never knew of it. Now, after reading these reviews, maybe 🤔 I'm better off that I didn't. Right 👍🤷

Im not going to talk bad about Monster. Theyre some good songs but most of the songs have no originality to them . 2 verses, a guitar solo, a 3rd verse blah blah every song. Atleast Psycho Circus the songs are written well, and musically the songs have decent hooks and changes throughout the songs . Paul's vocals just get by on Sonic Boom and Monster. The Gene songs on Monster are the best songs on the album, very Revenge type. I agree 100% with everything you say. Especially have other members sing more songs live and Pauls 74 to 77 songs are easy to sing . Great great review

I think the album cover let it down a bit but the inside photos look too bland. I think if they had gone more with their solo album colours and had a similar vibe to the inside cover of the Love Gun I think it could have worked. It just looked like a generic rock album look rather a scary 'Monster' type look.

Can’t argue against anything you said. I think the songs over all are better than Psycho Circus and Sonic Boom. Unfortunately it’s definitely a horrible sounding album for Paul. Too bad if he was sounding good I think Monster “fake” Kiss or not could of been a killer album. It’s funny but when you hear Eric talk about his music influences I would think he would of had heavier rockin songs instead of sounding like as you said Bob Seger. So Monster is from that period of the “Loudness wars” Their are worse tho Metallica Death Magnetic and the absolute worse is Rush original recording of Vapor Trails. So top 10 worst Kiss songs sounds fun!!!

I didn´t find those decent tracks. "Monster" bored me. Back then (year 2011) they had their scheme, their formula for the smash hit chorus applied for 30 years. No more instrumentals, long intros, speed changes, sound collages, whatever. That´s "super hard rock music" all on the sure side aiming for airplay.
