  • Udom Suk is an up and coming area of Bangkok along Sukhumvit Road on the BTS Skytrain. Not far from On Nut, this part of Sukhumvit has many new condos to rent and buy, which is attracting many foreign expats to the area. I took a look around and explored Udom Suk to see what the local life was like. There are markets, street food, shopping malls but this is still a developing neighbourhood. Will it be like the next On Nut? See for yourself.

    I was in Udomsuk for a couple of weeks in May (Soi 9 IIRC) and agree that it's nothing special. I was struck by the number of Farangs in the area (far more than I'd expected) but that it was still very much a Thai area, which was pleasing. However once my initial excitement of being in a new area wore off, I found it rather uninteresting and was please to move onto Huai Kwang, although I expect I'd have liked it more if I'd stayed longer, as one tends to do.
    The street food there was generally great with plenty of options.
    Even more options if you like Char-Keow/bubble tea etc at the top of Udomsuk Rd, there must be more than 25 shops within 200 metres.... It was a shame so few of them did hot coffee.
    Once you get away from Sukhumvit Rd it's a lot quieter.
    I did walk past the Cat Cafe (next to all the clinics) but despite liking cats I really don't see the attraction.

    A nice, simple, and honest blog on Udomsuk, where my daughters live and not far from me in Bang Na. Yeah, interesting to see it on film but still a drab place to dwell. Though you're right, the pros are relatively cheap rents and a decent infrastructure. The Bangkok Mall hasn't had any work done on it for the past 5-6 years, so no one is holding their breath. (Still it's not far from 4 other shopping centres.)

    This was hardly Udomsuk, this was just the area around the BTS, it goes all the way to Srinakarin road, where another monorail station is being built and you have access to more malls and one of the largest weekend markets in the city. Tons of stuff to see and do once you go down the road and the surrounding roads. This video could have been an hour long.

    Good overview Pat. Years ago I lived on nearby 101/1 and thought it was a pretty good area but nothing special. The Rama IX park east of Seacon Centre is a big plus Imo but it's not really local to the BTS vicinity. I would also recommend a trip to the ferry pier at the end of Sanphanwut Rd west off Bang Na. The ferry goes to Bang Krachao. Not really walkable from Udomsuk but close by. It also is close to Thailand's first railway line from Samut Prakan - Thang Rotfai Sai Kao Rd. Not sure if you've done an urban archeological video of this bit of railway history.

It's good to avoid living in touristy areas but it's great to live in a building where there are other farangs or living in an area like udomsuk where there are restos where you can bump into other farangs. . Not everybody is fluent in Thai so making friends is easier with people who speak your language. Several years ago I stayed at a condo on 101/1 that had a good mix of Thai and farang. Suited me just fine. And yet as Ryan said the area forces you to speak Thai.

    @steveand8980 2 года назад +1

    I've lived in the Udom Suk area for some 22 years now, at first I was viewed as a 'novelty' but that has changed with all the condo developments in the last decade or so when the Skytrain was extended from Onnut to Samrong, and later beyond. Due to the Skytrain this place became easier to meet up with all the other farangs you may know paying huge rents in the more 'traditional' farang areas, say Prakhanong and onwards into town. It's not perfect here, is anywhere? Pat's video is generally realistic and factual, but if you're used to the 'farang scene' further into town you may miss it. There are a few exceptions, and they are currently few. However some new farang places have sprung up, pubs, bars and restaurants, all that is needed now in this area is a farang orientated supermarket if you really need that. I don't think you'll have to wait long.

Transportation, food, supermarkets and shops and rent is very cheap. I believe my girlfriend only spend 2000 bath a month for rent. but, the rooms don't have any luxory either :D
