    I'm starting a job at a school in Minburi this week and just arrived today, I didn't realise how very quiet and far from the city it is 😅 but I'm looking forward to exploring and getting to know a more 'untouched' part of Bangkok and am grateful for your video, there isn't much information out there about Minburi and it's nice to see the highlights. I'm especially excited to go to the food markets!!

    I've lived in Minburi about eight years now after long stints in Prawet, Sukhumvit 50 and Sathon. It's a good place to live.... when all the people come, I will head out to Nong Jok haha... I live pretty near Romklao/Ramkhamhaeng junction and I have never heard a plane. There was a pretty cool chase scene in Ong Bak shot next to old Minburi Market.

    I first visited Thailand in the late 80s and it's grown beyond all recognition since then. The biggest growth spurts were immediately after the opening of the BTS Skytrain (99 I think) and again after Swampy opened up with the Airport link MRT (06).
    I'm not sure Minburi will grow as much as they expect but it certainly will grow to be unrecognisable from today.
    Bangkok is a fine example of how a Capital city grows by providing efficient, reasonably priced public transport to allow the movement of workers and/or tourists.
    Sadly, one day in the distant future it will grow beyond it's transport capabilities and start to drown in people like London is now.

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  2 года назад +6

      Good points Andrew, there are another 10 Minburis all brewing along many other BTS/MRT extensions opened recently.
      By the time Bangkok becomes like London did in the 2000s I'll hopefully be long gone or the city will have sank.

    Thank you for your video. Nice to see the area I live close to. I live in Nong Chok, close to Min Buri border in one of those big gated communities that has been built there.
    If you follow Suwinthawong Rd you will eventually come to Chachoengsao. The last years they have extended the road as it will be one of the entrances to Bangkok from Eastern Economic Corridor as I understand.

    Many thanks Pat. I love living in Minburi so it is so nice to see it being filmed and commentated on so well. Thanks for the excellent info on future developments. Thanks for the mention too. I’m so famous now!
    I like living there because of the value for money (great cheap local food options and I pay 4,200 a month for a large room in a well appointed apartment block) along with the almost community feel. Us few farangs tend to stand out so maybe we get a few extra smiles and sawasdee’s? It’s also far enough away to ensure it’s an effort into the centre and its expensive attractions but not too far when fancying a venture.
    Shame you didn’t get in Pak Soi Night Market (Mon-Wed-Fri) on Suwinthawong Rd near Big C, but a comprehensive look. Other cheap transport options into the city until the MRT opens is a bus to Bangkapi to join up with the faster khlong ferry or songthaew down Rom Kloa for the ARL at Lat Krabang or the direct buses. I’m lucky I’ve lots of spare time as you need it.
    The Soi dogs can be hazardous but aside from that I am really happy there. Certainly more so than in NW9 in London. Perfect for a retired Cheap Charlie such as myself.

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  2 года назад +4

      Good to hear that mate, I missed the snooker cue place and left out the supermarkets. On the map the Pak soi market seemed a bit far off, but I'd already done 3 bloody markets and none were very spectacular at all. Chatuchak 2 was the most buzzing.
      That rent is typical for an area like Minburi I suppose and I doubt they'll rise steeply in years to come, the upwardly mobile will stay in the new condos and hang out in the new mall(s) by Romklao intersection, also within easy reach to Central Village, Siam Outlet and the airport.
      You didn't mention the old housing development, have you ever wandered in there?

    • @RABernard
      @RABernard 2 года назад +4

      @@BangkokPat You’re braver than me going in that old place. Been past many a time to use the gap in the fence at the bottom to get into Minburi Market but Soi dogs are a nuisance. You’re obviously some kind of Dr Doolittle as animals seem to be calm around you. I think some homeless are in there.
      Pak Soi is at the intersection of Suwinthawong & Thanon Hathai Rat. Like a cross between a market & car booter back home with plenty of food & drinking opportunities.

    Back in the days Minburi was literally a Mininum Buri just miles of sleepy villages and emerging residental areas but mostly just grassy swampy parts of Bangkok I was bored my mind away while my family driving to their sibling's opening of then new restaurant that was like 13 years ago the place was without much street lights and was literally in the middle of nowhere in Min Buri of course the place went bust very shortly.
    I could really use that Monorail MRT line though as even today driving from Bang Khen to Min Buri is still a big ask to many people hope for the place to feel more developed as it was literally the backwater parts of Bangkok that you use it just as a passing by kind of place you either live there or you drive pass it to get somewhere else.
    That's starts to change of course as more development moving more towards east side in anticipation of EEC.

    The last time I was Bangkok (2019) I took the Saen Saep water bus all the way to the end (Wat Sri Bunruang) to visit the Airliner Graveyard. And I was surprised to see that there was another water bus line that continued on from there. Not marked on Google Maps. I suppose it's those electric boats mentioned at 10:30, or their predecessors. I was planning on getting on whatever was continuing down the canal and seeing how far it went and where I would end up. Now it's a little less mysterious. Following the Saen Saep, it goes on way past Minburi, into some rice growing areas (why are Thai rice fields long and narrow?) and then ends up against a very large river called the Bang Pakong, which ends up in the Gulf of Thailand near Chon Buri. I wonder how far the fare-taking boats go.

From here, you can also take a van to Rat Uthit area but after 9.00 p.m, you cannot take any transport back to Ramkamhaeng unless you can hail a cab which will take you just near Ramkamhaeng Hospital. Many halal vendors and food in this area. In 2016, I started to rent a car and used Google Map to drive here and back to visit my friends. From Lat Phrao, just use the Sirat Highway, pass Kaset Navamin then exit left before the twist and turn underneath the highway before you reach Hat That Rat area. The Mrt will link Ramkamhaeng to Min Buri so it will be good for a visit.
