Hi Pat, Im currently living in Onnut and I can see how fast it changed since this video! you should come back again. Condos are already built, no more noise, nice food markets, and it's so convenient to live there. I don't think there is so many places in Bangkok which have BTS, 3 malls with cinema, street food, restaurant, night life, bars, river, coffee places, all within 5min walk... with a direct access to highway.
I'm going to onnut and will look for a short term rental there and go gym and work remotely. If you could tip me in any direction would be awesome. For now I booked a hotel for 3 nights in the area, then I will look for a condo.
I think Onnut is pretty good area for these reasons: two huge grocery stores right next to the BTS, tons of places to easily get local and western food in the area, best beef buffet, outside eating/drinking area next to BTS, some chill bars nearby, often a lot of girls who like to date expats live in this area, and gyms, especially for doing Muay Thai or Jiu Jitsu. Also, you can rent a newer studio or maybe 1 bedroom condo here for as little as 10k to 12k baht a month. The bad part is that it's crowd with locals and expats alike and not as hip or close to the center as the other BTS stops like Ekkamai, Thong lo, Phrom Phong, and Asok.
Having lived in Thailand for 17 years yet never having explored BKK properly, I really appreciate these fantastic videos you make. I find them fascinating. You do a really great job. Thank you.
In my opinion, On Nut BTS station being the last station back in the days really gave On Nut area real opportunity to grow economically but noise and crowd can be overwhelming. The condos near Digital Park area just two stations down (Punawithee) is definitely less crowded with all the restaurants/ 7-11. The fruit price in Bang Chak area is so much cheaper than Thong Lo :D
"On Nut" and "Bearing" were ones that stick in your mind, since they were at the end of the line, you saw them on many signs no matter which platform you were standing on.
@@tonythaiger93 Don't know if that's necessarily bad... Rural patches are disappearing and they can be interesting in their own right. Condos might be nice to live in, but I'm not sure they add to the ambience of an area.

Great series, Pat! As a long time Bkk resident I like all the interesting and fascinating historical details you present about the neighborhoods you cover. Keep up the great series! Thank you! 👍
Nice job Pat! Great to see brothers in arms finally cover my hood. Some cracking shots of OnNut and nice balance overall. My reasons for choosing Onnut as a newcomer to BKK, are.. a modern well priced condo, 3 mins walk to bts. 3 supermarkets, 2 beer gardens (u missed one just down the road from the one u visited, they play live music in there), a modern shopping mall with a cinema and plenty of western outlets, the bars on soi 50, the great street food on soi 77, all within 5 mins walk! And a local vibe where no one ever tries to sell me anything or treat me like a tourist, which can't be said for living more "downtown". Constant hive of activity, never a quiet moment. Sanriri and habbito also a nice quietish oasis 10 mins walk away..but u are right on the wall of noise, its relentless, probably get less decibels living on an airport runway at times lol. Loving the football shots and poor Chris waddle impression from world cup 90 mate. What a player by the way, one of best England's ever produced. Cheers. Hope to catch u again soon.
I call it ''crappy'' but in an affectionate way, goes back to some comment I read saying it was all characterless and bland. Look closer and you often find great details!
This is the first video of yours I have come across, and I am so pleased I did. I have subscribed now, of course! Me and Thailand go back a long way, but this is the first time I have seen a more 'illuminating' side of Bangkok. It was a most welcome presentation. Your style, locations, photography, editing, etc. are imaginative and humorous. I loved that when you were greeting the goats over the fence, you started a story..."When I was a kid...". Loved it!! Thank you for some great moments, and I will now seek out more of your work.
Thanks for this nostalgic postcard of Onnut. I've been there lots of times but your video manages to make it more interesting than I remember. Short videos are bound to rise above the often punishing shopping trips to Tesco and Big C. I always enjoy your takes.
Thank you for this video Pat, it reminded me of the very happy 3 years I spent living at Ideo Verve On Nut & was especially great to see my old "Have a quiet beer" haunt at the little food square downstairs (I didn't see it in your video but the owner, who used to come chat with us most nights, opened a new place just down the road on the corner of Soi 79 which is very nice as well)... Great place to live if you want to live in Bangkok but outside of the city center, If I ever move back then I know where I'll be living (most probably back at Ideo Verve)... Where else can you have a Shopping Center, Cinema & 3 supermarkets (Lotus's, Big C & Tops) on your doorstep whilst being a few BTS stops away from the CIty Center (+ 1 stop away from Phra Khanong with all of the W-District's food offerings). Unfortunately after 3 years there we decided that we wanted a change (mainly due to Covid making everybody feel stir crazy) so we decided to move to the beach (Wongamat, Pattaya way) but I still miss On Nut & just being able to pop downstairs for a couple of beers in the madness that is Bangkok :)
Brothers In Arms. For years I religiously stayed around Soi 19 Sukhumvit, then I was told about On Nut six odd years ago, and loved it from my fist visit. A lot cheaper, more genuine people and every thing you need. Loved the video.
Pat, You are a cornucopia of useful information and you present it with style and Grace. It really is exhausting to see the work you put into a video. I moved to Sukhumvit/On Nut to be around more English-speaking Thais and Farang Friendly restaurants from 2017 to 2019 and when I returned after two years of Covid Drama, settled down on 77. You are right Mate, noise galore and the walk from The Base 77 to On Nut BTS can be a nightmare but I just love the diversity and convenience. Definitely, quieter places to live in Bkk but it is never dull. Thank you for exposing places I never knew existed in the Hood.
Thanks very much, the constant hum of traffic at all hours would drive me mad. It's the first video where I've had to reduce the volume for the street scenes and most of the off street scenes even had the noise. The expressway is to blame I think as well.
@@BangkokPat Recently rented an apartment off of Soi 81. two and half minutes walk from building to steps to On Nut BTS. Can't hear the noise from here.
You summed up Onnut just about right, but as a past resident for 20 years I still have good memories about living about 3 Klm from BTS. I lived with the local people and where we lived it was so quiet and the people were very friendly ,so thanks for putting this up.
I lived in the T77 community for most of 2021, and enjoyed it. My gripe here is the pricing of drinks/food/services. It's almost Asok/Nana levels for eating and drinking, but just one stop either way on the BTS to Prakhanong or Bang chak/Punawitthi and things get back to what they should be. Feels like a bit of a stealth tax for the residents of the "luxury" condos in the area. Still, loved my year there, great areas to explore if you don't mind a bit of sweat and grime.
Chanced upon this video today as I am doing research for my upcoming trip to Bangkok. This video is a pleasant surprise. I like your BBC documentary style videos on areas and things of Bangkok. Very interesting little infomation for a tourists/travelers wanting to learn more about the fascinating city which is Bangkok. Awesome accent too.
I have a condo at the Ramada Sukhumvit 48, spend time between there and the country. It’s actually 2 buildings, the smaller front one has a restaurant and coffee shop and will become a small hotel, the larger back building is the condo units. I chose their because of the easy access from the highway and the closeness to eateries and the BTS. Will do some more exploring after seeing your video, by the way the hamburger place right across cheap Charlie’s is one of the best kept secret if you like hamburgers.
@@BangkokPat yes I really do and the view from the rooftop is awesome. I actually saw a peregrine falcon flying high outside my window the other week, amazing.
I am a new to you channel And enjoy all of the old and the new ones in a different areas of them it's Very interesting to see it's Again for sure. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Pat, wonderful channel, I just discovered it! I have a video idea for you (I haven't found anything on your channel like it yet, but I may have missed it): You talk a lot about the expat and tourist experience but it's typically from the POV of the white farang Westerner. What's it like for the Westerner of Asian origin? For example, I'm Filipino-Canadian. How would my experience differ from the White Canadian (as an expat and tourist)? How would Thais treat me? Pros and Cons? As a half-Asian Westerner yourself you surely have stories to tell and if you can interview others there that would be super interesting to me. Thanks for all your work Pat!
Lol. You stood infront of my former apartment !!! At minute 6:40 ^^ Ive commented in another video some weeks ago already, now i see you covered both my living places in one video hehe. How come you chose exactly those? I was living in soi 50 for around 2 years. And in soi 81 for, hmm, 3 years i think. Then the rest Punnawithi and Huay Kwang/Lad Phrao. I didnt like soi 81, no. But its cool that it has the Tesco nearby, also opposite is that beer garden kind of place. Maybe, bkk is changing quickly but it was there back then. Lots of food and shops etc. Directly opposite Lotus on the BTS station. Soi 50, no good memories.... I got robbed there. Kinda my own fault but still, no good memories... Punnawithi (Soi 101) was actually nice, also next to skytrain but a bit quiter. In my apartment i didnt hear a single car in the night, only birds and insects. Crazy, middles in Bangkok. And the street had everything. Nice food, nice markets, two 7-11, a nice bar (Sports Bar) with live music often, pharmacy and all kinds of things right next to ones doorstep.
Just discovered your channel and I'm really impressed! Can't stop watching your Bangkok videos now. I've been to Bangkok quite a few times but I've already learnt a lot from the first 2 videos I've watched. Which area of BKK do you think most expats (not sexpats) live in Bangkok, would you say On nut is it? Appreciate your efforts and you gained a new subscriber, cheers mate!
Its where I go for finding Thai products at Lotus. From Ramkamhaeng, just use the tollway, exit at Sukhumvit 50 then park at either Lotus or Big C. Very busy intersection. Parking at Lotus can be pricey if you park more than 4 hours. Sukhumvit 77/1 has many massage shops where local Thais visit with tourists also and the price is lower.
You are completely wrong about that. Bangkok is basically a garbage pit. The Chao Praya River is brown with sewage and dead fish and motor oil,; the canals are in fact polluted with industrial runoff and human waste; the slums and homeless areas - like abandoned construction sites where funding fell through so the investors took their billions and went bankrupt - are inhabited by rats and poor people, drugs addicts and thieves. The air? People smoke cigarettes in order to filter out some of the pollution in the air. This guy is showing you a special area of Bangkok where rich foreigners live
@@danielcunningham5940 Disagree, this is a pretty average area of sois in Sukhumvit corridor, except for the goat farm. Plenty of more upscale areas closer to the center. Not much trash, but the sidewalks are grimy.
Dire straits Brothers in Arms. I saw them live in Toronto 92' I don't think it would be my choice for retirement it reminds me too much of the city I am escaping from ! Cool Monitor lizard silhouette shot ! totally worth the 20 mins 👍
Hi Pat. I'm really glad you did a video on this neighbourhood. I too am from the days when On Nut was the end of the line. I came to BKK in early 2004. I've been to that neighbourhood a few times to cat-sit🐈 for some friends and I always love exploring in there. It's amazing how when you're 'inside' where the buildings are, and the Sansiri garden, you're really in a peaceful haven. Whenever you go to the BTS station, however, it's massive sensory overload. BUT that's what we love about Bangkok. 😄 Would you be willing to do a video on my neighbourhood - Muangthong/Impact/Chaengwattana? It has the pink like being constructed now, and this will run from one end of Chaengwattana, all the way down Ram Intra, all the way to Minburi. There's also those tall half-completed towers that were just left during the '90's recession. There's an abandoned hotel lakeside, which now has vegetation growing out of it. I can't remember its full name, but I can easily look it up and send it to you.
Pat, your content is addictive. One comment; you create so many action shots which are only 2-3 seconds long. Many sequences are worthy of much longer duration, giving the viewer a lingering experience and continuity to a subsequent lingering sequence. I find myself pausing and rewinding to truly appreciate what you have created. OK if that's your style but I reckon us viewers are not in a rush to get to the end of your presentations. To me you are the the David Attenborough of Bangkok street life. Just a good job the felines ain't gonna eat you. Keep up the good work.
Nice trip down memory lane mate. Lived at A Space condominium, On Nut 37/1 2013-2014. had the time of my life. going off to Thai school each day on the BTS. all you could eat Sunday roast buffet at Molly Malone's Irish Pub in Si Lom. Remember my new years eve in the beer garden at Pickadaily (funny, but thats how they spell it). right at midnight there was an unholy bang from the table behind me. turned around to see a cop in uniform had let off a round from his service revolver to see in the new year. didnt know the area was fashionable. had stayed in an Air BnB apartment for 2 weeks and ended up renting long term from the owner. Your videos are very well done. cheers
I loved it there. I just kept going back to that area when I was in Bangkok. I absolutely loved the cats outside the police station - there was this little kitten that was so friendly. Barely made a sound, but just snuggled up to me every time I was there.
Had your channel pop up the other day and have now subscribed. I haven't lived in Bangkok or Thailand for a decade now, but when I last did I was on Soi 81. Pretty much just a residential road but if you had gone left at the end where you turned around, just a short distance along across from a school was what was once clearly a beautiful old house that was still lived in but had seen much better days. Could be gone by now.
Wasn't aware that Cheap Charlie died. He left a great legacy in the guise of his iconic bar. I only visited CC when it was located in soi 11. Would love to check out the new location. Pat I was going to admonish you for the paucity of monitor lizards in this video. Glad you were able to squeeze one in late in the piece.
This really captures the feeling of walking around and spending time in BKK. Visuals and audio just gorgeous, looking forward to checking out your other vids.
After a crazy few years in Thailand of night clubs, drinking, and beautiful woman I was going to choose On Nut for my choice of Condo but decided to purchase further out in Bearing and I'm happy I did being that's it's a more Thai area has everything I need and bigger distance from the bars and clubs and it has reduced the temptation of the drinking party nights I'm sure something that has saved me $$$ over the last 4 years.
Love that u r showing us the real Thailand instead just the glamorous part. Ever thought of doing a video about senior home/ assistant living. I can’t find any video about it. Talked to many RUclipsrs, but no one wanna touch the subject. Retiring in Thailand is awesome, but we all will end up getting too old for the night life and busy traffic and might need help in life. 🙏
I'd feel like I was cheating people if I showed the usual areas already covered by many. I'm thinking of a video on the subject of hobby suggestions for expat retirees.
Thanks for these videos , Pat - they're well researched , professional and I like your shots of the more obscure , unexplored parts of Krung Thep a lot !
Good job Pat. Lived in Udom Suk back in the early 00’s and my memories of On Nut were always getting pulled over by the traffic police opposite Lotus/BTS. Other than that it was traffic traffic traffic traffic. Awful Verve joke by the way mate 😁
He shoots he scores the crowd go wild !!!!!!!!. Pat I remember when the BTS ended/started at On Nut , getting off and trying to get a taxi was tough so it was off to the beer garden for food and a swift beer 😂😂 I really like those old wooden house built to last , you are coming out with some cracking jokes😎😎
Great vid Pat. I moved from Silom to Suk Soi 81 back when the NUT was the last BTS station, it was sorta green belt back then, no building's over 8 floors, changed a bit now with all the hi rise popping up all over the place. Lived in both 81 and 50 and i look back at those days with great fondness. Still miss the place mate.
Really interesting seeing these outlying areas. Looking at the BTS map earlier I was amazed to see how far north and south it now runs (or will do). It would be curious to see what there is at the new end stations
Thanks Neil, the new stations and areas are worth visiting, and already condos are springing up along these routes. All with creating more little On Nut type areas in mind I suppose, eventually!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this vlogg has the most sky train shots out of all your videos Pat. I might re-watch it and do a count. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🙏
I was gonna do a question actually, count the shots. Every time I film where there is BTS I make a point of getting a train in shot, just a habit. So how many? (I haven't counted!)
Thanks Pat, brilliant honest and informative vlog. Have only done a couple of visits to On Nut, pedestrian unfriendly as you. Guess the OnNut tourist board weren't sponsoring this vlog!!! Good on for an honest, balanced picture.
I can't pretend it's the hipster location like all the other videos who conveniently miss out the bad bits, I'd never live that down, so why not just be honest! Thanks Bob.
Excellent video. Enjoyed it very much. Thank you for sharing. I know the area quite well as I always book an apartment or hotel On Nut when I arrive in Thailand, as it is only one station away from Ekkamai bus station. Very handy if you want to catch an early morning bus to Pattaya or most other destinations.
Pat think u spot on about on nut , lived there for a while took an age to get to from flat to bts, traffic was crazy , sometimes just sat in taxi and it wouldn’t be able to move for about 15 mins, but as usual pat u always get video bang on mate !!!!!
Atmospheric BKK as I know it. Forget the flashy lights and op nuat massage. This is more like daily life. Not my part of the town so it's great to find an interesting place to visit. Big melons is different, yum yum.
This is my old neighborhood and one of the reasons I chose this area was the access to the highway of which there are two, so for people that need to get to the airport it takes approximately 22 minutes which is quite easy on the expressway and the same thing when you're returning from the airport it's easy to get to this area. If you need to go south towards Pattaya very quick and if you need to go north you jump on the highway through one toll and you end up near ayutaya. So for business travelers it's an excellent place to live. My condo is approximately 1 km from the Tesco and we had shuttle service and I had a scooter which I could park at the lotus for an indefinite period of time at no charge. The beauty of our condo was it was super quiet and you talked about a view well I had one of the best views in Bangkok. Just a heads up my condo is for sale as I'm living in the countryside in Isan now. Well documented Video

Thanks, I missed out mentioning Easy Burger! Excellent it was too. You must have a great view of Koh Klang and the canal route to the river!
@@BangkokPat yes I really do and the view from the rooftop is awesome. I actually saw a peregrine falcon flying high outside my window the other week, amazing.
Looks like an exciting and interesting neighborhood. I liked the lonelier back streets you showed.
I lived at the Thonglor area for four years and right now I'm living at the On Nut area, I love both places.
Good to hear that Dave, I say Thong Lor can be snobby but I'd kill for one of those big houses
I am a new to you channel
And enjoy all of the old and the new ones in a different areas of them it's
Very interesting to see it's
Again for sure. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks very much. Glad you found the channel!!
A future classic! Thank you!
Thanks Paul.
Brilliant video again Pat. Would love to see a video of the 2nd tier naughty bar spots. Areas for mischief outside of Nana, Cowboy, Patpong.
I enjoy your commentary with its unique sense of humor. Also, I hit the like button and it went to 1K! Ha!
As always top notch production values and interesting local histories. Well done Pat.
Very nice regards from Colombia, very professional and thanks for letting us know about that mistery of Bangkok!
Your videos are usually great on interesting and or useful information and this one is superb. Congratulations. 🍺🍺
Love your show Pat. You made me lol tonight when I watched you describe the size of the melons, at the very end of the clip. All innocent of course.
Quality video - fantastic content, filming and production!!
Lol. You stood infront of my former apartment !!! At minute 6:40 ^^
Ive commented in another video some weeks ago already, now i see you covered both my living places in one video hehe.
My son and his fiancé live in OnNut. They love it
Just discovered your channel and I'm really impressed!
I find it very pleasing to see how litter free Bangkok is, compared to every city that I have visited in the Philippines.
Very strange though, as there are literally no trash cans in public anywhere
Interesy. In other cities trash is just thrown out of windows
Philippines is a big step down economically vs Thailand.
Very good view into this part of Bangkok. It is a pleasure to watch and listen to you.
Thanks Jurgen.
Dire straits Brothers in Arms. I saw them live in Toronto 92'
I don't think it would be my choice for retirement it reminds me too much of the city I am escaping from !
Cool Monitor lizard silhouette shot ! totally worth the 20 mins 👍
Another educational video by you Pat,I just love to follow you on your exploration of Bangkok :) :) :)
Would you be willing to do a video on my neighbourhood - Muangthong/Impact/Chaengwattana?
Good to meet you Pat Nick me in the blue shirt asked for directions to benjakiti Park:)
Your videos are very well done. cheers
I love On Nut I always live across from the supermarket on Soi 50 whenever I'm in Thailand.
I loved it there. I just kept going back to that area when I was in Bangkok.
I absolutely loved the cats outside the police station - there was this little kitten that was so friendly. Barely made a sound, but just snuggled up to me every time I was there.
Really enjoyed the Video Pat. Many thanks Buddy.
Thanks Mickey!
Great channel! I love the editing!
Thanks, it often takes me a good few hours to edit!
@@BangkokPat I can tell!! Keep it up!
I’v never thought a guy who is from England would do a video about Bangkok.Thank you very much.
I usually spend about three months year in Thailand and I can say that Bangkok Pat is easily the best
Thanks, appreciate the kind words Deiter
Had your channel pop up the other day and have now subscribed. I haven't lived in Bangkok or Thailand for a decade now, but when I last did I was on Soi 81. Pretty much just a residential road but if you had gone left at the end where you turned around, just a short distance along across from a school was what was once clearly a beautiful old house that was still lived in but had seen much better days. Could be gone by now.
Thank you.Seeing Bangkok with you is great.
I lived in The Link Soi 50 for 3 years. Nice
Great video. Loved the humor.
In the future your work will be viewed with much respect as a time capsule
Great to see a professional and factual video about Bangkok.
After a crazy few years in Thailand of night clubs, drinking, and beautiful woman
I was going to choose On Nut for my choice of Condo but decided to purchase further out in Bearing and I'm happy I did being that's it's a more Thai area has everything I need and bigger distance from the bars and clubs and it has reduced the temptation of the drinking party nights I'm sure something that has saved me $$$ over the last 4 years.
Very interesting video I haven't been to that area for years, lots of changes.
Thanks mate. On Nut is no oil painting but many expats seen to enjoy the area a lot. Some great spots around there.
Great finishing Pat.
I was a good finisher in my heyday, now I'm just about finished although I blame those shoes.
Lived there for 15 years up to covid. Had a great time...😊
Always balanced, brilliant. 👍
Thanks mate.
Thanks for honest report on Bangkok slums👍🏽💐
i can remember doing visa runs many moons ago from under the big tesco sign
Thanks for these videos , Pat - they're well researched , professional and I like your shots of the more obscure , unexplored parts of Krung Thep a lot !
Cheers Paul.
Good job Pat. Lived in Udom Suk back in the early 00’s and my memories of On Nut were always getting pulled over by the traffic police opposite Lotus/BTS. Other than that it was traffic traffic traffic traffic. Awful Verve joke by the way mate 😁
Thanks Steve, I made up that joke lying in bed after a days shooting. But seeing the sign did remind me of the band and song!
Nice little walk around. Only got as far as Prakhanong on the BTS when I stayed in BKK. Living near Asoke, On Nut just seemed so far away back then.
Awsome videos love watching them. So glad you done this one reminds me of when I lived there, brought back some great memories .
Thanks vey much! Glad you enjoyed that mate.
Another fine effort - thank you.
Amusing and interesting! Cheers.
Thanks Pete!
I do like Your videos. A perfect way to explore. Thanks , please continue !! Thomas Uppsala Sweden
Thanks Thomas!
Brothers in arms, great video BKK Pat
Thanks Justin, I know the album off by heart, ever since my dad first played it back in '86
Cheers for a great video again Pat just read the comments and John Mitch mentioned a tailor in On Nut I’ll check him out when I’m in Bangkok,,,,
Thanks mate. That's a tailor I may visit at some point too.
Excellent video as usual mate, well done
Another great video Pat... Most enjoyable mate 👍
Top draw video, refreshing to find an alternative to the focus of topics from normal expat video's .
Thanks David.
Great vlog Pat you manage to make the mundane seem interesting lol 😂
I lived on soi 77 for a while back in 2013 and it was my favorite area. No bars not many expats just Thailand
This was an awesome episode. Extremely well done!
Last stop before bustoville. Its not bad and ok prices. Back when the beer garden was there it was kick ass!
Good to see you are listening to your viewers Pat! I saw the rabbit in this video 😄. The name 'On Nut' has always made me chuckle for some reason.
So I finally got to On Nut, a great few days it was (5 days actually) exploring. The noise was a constant though. Unbelievable.
Pat, did you have to gesture like that when you were mentioning how big the melons were?? Too funny, hahaha....
Thanks, Mike - fast access to the highways is a big plus.
Hi Mike. Is your condo a one bedroom or two? We are looking at buying somewhere near the BTS and we really like that area. How can I reach you?
Looking forward to exploring soon thanks to you. You answered many of the questions I always had for this area.
instead of that final shot of Chris Waddle you could have let score Gazza against Scotland :D
as if we are living there
typical area demonstration
simple still deep explanation
with a tasty history bits
thanks man
