America's MOST TRADITIONAL AMISH...The WHITE TOPPERS of Pennsylvania's Big Valley...Kishacoquillas

  • Perhaps America's most traditional Amish are the Nebraska Amish of the Northern end of the Big Valley in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Their traditional ways of dress, hair style, living, home decorations, farming methods... are evolving slowly...some not at all. With their original descendants coming from the Lancaster County region in the 1700's they share some of the same traits as their Lancaster distant relatives but have distinguished themselves in many, many other ways from not only the Lancaster Amish but most other Amish groups as well.
    The Nebraska Amish have 2 other settlements that I am aware of...one in Ohio and one in New York. I hope you enjoy the video showing the Big Valley Nebraska Amish homesteads.

    I’m not sure about my Amish friends in Marathon NY if they are traditional or not but they are the best people I’ve known in life , and honestly I don’t photograph them or take photos even though they have given me permission I just feel it would be a huge disrespect to them and I would never do that to friends they are not Amusements nor are they exhibits, they are the greatest people living nowadays and the most honest.
    As an afternote I know Amish folks don’t normally befriend “outsiders “ but I saved a Amish family from a horrible house fire when I delivered packages for FedEx ground since then they have been my best friends and I am honored.

      @@GenYGaming Very hard, you would have to be accepted { it can take a long time to prove this is the life you want to live.}, give up everything you have ever known. You will need to live in a way that you have no idea of how it is done. no internet, no gamming, no TV. You have to follow every law the Bishop sets down for his community. No complaining ever. You need to be able to work the land, and all the other things that are needed to live that way. Another rescue has a video with a veterinarian re a sweet horse owned by amish thrown into the slaughter pipeline because they did not want to do a life saving proceedure!!

      As a Native American, people love to go to our pow wows eat our foods and watch us dance, and of course, take photos and videos of us. Sometimes they would even come up and ask questions. I never felt it intrusive or strange about this. I myself am curious about the different cultures peoples around the world so I understand that curiosity in regards to my culture and me, when dressed in my Native regalia. It's human nature to seek out, discover how the rest of the world is ,the similarities and differences. It is exciting! I got to spend a month in Scotland with Scottish friends and I KNOW I took a LOT in!😊 a lot of photos and videos. I find that people look at the Amish and Mennonite in admiration and respect, a class of people that make the simple life work. They also have the reputation of some of the most high quality wood products, delicious homemade bakery, jams and cheeses around! We had Amish back where I came from in Zephyrhills Florida and I always looked forward to getting the cheese from their booth at the fleamarket. Taking photos of an event, a person, people, nature, gives joy. We may not be of the world but we are still in the world and all its beauty God created around this planet earth. It was for His glorification and our appreciation and enjoyment as well. And that includes all the cultures and peoples.
      So don't feel upset when people look, take photos of what has just made their day happier. As musician, that is my enjoyment to make others happy. I don't get paid to play lunch hour for seniors at the community centers or rehab center where your audience is old, sick people in a slew of wheelchairs as your audience. WWJD. I feel just what I'm doing, singing and playing and spreading God's word - and yes, sometimes photos are taken.❤

    Do the different groups or clans intermarry ?. If so would the wife, and any subsequent children, take on the husbands clan ?. Do they use mains electrical power at all for lights etc in houses and barns etc. Are they subject to all normal laws and taxes etc. of America. I notice some mechanical powered machinery, mostly horse powered though. Also noticed that in some parts it seemed a general air of neglect to buildings and equipment, others were immaculate. Saw mill looked very mechanised. You asked for questions. Brian. Murcia . Spain. Thankyou

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  9 месяцев назад +2

      Groups of Amish intermarry if they fellowship with another group. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the same sect in all cases. The Nebraska Amish have quite a few other settlements, some in other states. The Lancaster Amish have dozens of daughter settlements. They all fellowship. So that group is many tens of thousands. Old Order Amish will not use grid power unless they are renting a home with grid power or have purchased one that needs grid power ex. For well pumps, sewage pumps. etc. It would be for an amount of time while they make different arrangements.
      They are subject to income and real estate and school taxes like everyone else. They are exempt from social security as they take care of their own aged members. There are many many different types of Amish. Each does “Amish” their own way. Each church district may be different than another church district in the same sect. Groups define for themselves what Amish means. All Old Order Amish are similar in such things as shunning, the Ausbund for their hymnal, church in homes, plain dress…though.
      Some groups keep their buildings immaculate and are valued into the millions, others believe too much concern about their buildings looks prideful. Like I said earlier to be Amish means so many different things across the country. They have more in common though than they have differences.

The Byler and Nebraska have roots in the big valley. The Big Valley Amish used to be one group and multiple splits have occurred over the years. The blue doors and also gates have been seen in many communities. Some traditional things have occurred for so long the lore behind them has been pretty much lost.

      If I’m going to produce a video about a certain group of Amish that lives an insular lifestyle it’s going to show to what lengths they go to want to maintain that life style. Many of those shots were far away and most didn’t even know I was videoing them. It’s their same behavior when someone stops to watch them work their horses in the field. Their insularity, by the way, also makes certain kinds of abuse a little too easy to cover up. I suggest you stop reading novels and actually learn about their culture. I’ve been interacting personally with Amish across multiple states for 3 decades.

Child sexual abuse has a recidivism rate near 100% in the general population. To think it doesn’t within the Amish community is absurd. In Lancaster County that type of abuse is at the least being recognized and admitted to within the Amish community but I think there’s still a long ways to go. It needs to be reported to the police each and every time and not dealt with solely by the Church.

      As an educational video to show the insular lifestyle they wish to live I felt it important to show their actions when they thought they were being photographed. I say “thought” because I was generally hundreds of yards away and they did not know they were being photographed. You know as well as I do that they would act the same way when anyone stops to just watch them working in the fields irrespective of being photographed. Could you explain the rational for that?

      Because people do not ask and because you show their faces, is one of the reasons many of the Nebraska Amish dislike photographers and those who film. I see some folks I know and I know the families and know what they have said. Better to ask, they are pretty friendly folks if you do.

    I had to modify my view of Amish after seeing a film about puppy mills at an ASPCA event. Some of these were on Amish farms in the Lancaster PA area. More recently I learned that sometimes the large draft horses used by Amish , after 20 years+ working on Amish farms are sent to auction where they end up with “meat men “ for slaughter in Mexico or Canada. . I think this does not characterize all Amish, but just like all of us there are “ bad actors “ in every group and religion.

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  10 месяцев назад +2

      Just as in any group there are those that let money dictate character. I believe puppy mills are a result of that. However, it takes sellers and buyers to perpetuate that and the buyers aren’t Amish. 50% of the problem is the buyer side.
      The horses I tend to disagree with. The vast majority of the draft animals are well taken care of. The market is one way to make use of the animal after it cannot be useful in a farming practice. It’s not feasible to keep every animal that gets old on a farm. Farming isn’t a charitable endeavor. Most get by farming. No small farmer gets rich no matter how they farm. A cow that cannot be freshened, a bull calf, a horse that can no longer pull, a breeder pig that can no longer breed, etc.etc.etc. cannot be kept around as a charity case.

      None if well meaning folk like you would approach the farms using draft animals and offer to purchase those that are too old to work any longer. I’m sure they’d gladly sell them to you rather than auction them off. That’s a solution to the problem you see. A farmer lives on a slim margin and it is impossible to keep every animal that cannot in some way help them to make a living to feed their families. What do you think happens to dairy cows that can no longer freshen, to breeder pigs that can’t be bred, to male chicks at an egg farm, …? Start an organization that purchases at auction prices these horses that are no longer able to work. They could be shot at the farm and buried but at least the animal is put to use when slaughtered.

One thing particularly caught my eye - you obviously didn’t get the people’s permission to be filmed as the woman with two children let you haven’t as she immediately hid when she saw what was going on. You could have accomplished much more in the time you took to do this video.
