The Amish are so respectable and fascinating, often when people think of conservative religious communities they only get negative ideas.... These people have always been peaceful, self-sufficient, positive, hard-working, preserved their values and beliefs, and an excellent example of how a strong community can stay pretty much self-sufficient with the right mindset. As a person who was in a religious cult for almost 20 years, the temptation to get into perversion or drugs can be greater in a restrictive community because of boredom or the sheer lack of fun activities. You need balance in live. It is best to be part of an ethical supportive community for sure, but too restrictive causes pressure points, that will eventually burst.
While that may be true, our young people are turning to drugs and lusts of the flesh in droves, never having been in a restrictive setting such as the Amish or any other. So it seems the opposite is true as well. Young people looking for purpose and a place to belong will turn to perversion and/or drugs easily in today's " anything goes " world.

La seule chose qui me manquerait le portable pour les jeux. :)

This documentary is mostly correct, but seems to suffer from several mischaracterizations. First of all, the backsides of the Lancaster Amish were shown, but then interviews done with the River Brethren - referred to as Amish; which are not Amish but a different group that does use electricity. The Mennonites also fall under a different group. They are all under what is known as Anabaptist. In addition, technology, with the exception of TV, is not regarded as 'evil', but rather something to be avoided because it can possibly pull members away from their dependence upon each other and away from the group.
I am a native of Pennsylvania, and grew up around Amish and Mennonite communities. This video amounts to little more than propaganda. Also, it conflates Amish and Mennonite practices a little too freely. For example, it talks about a Mennonite high school. But Amish kids, as opposed to Mennonite kids, only to to school up to the 8th grade. The video also utterly ignores the problem of incest, which is widespread among the Amish. All in all, this video amounts to a whitewash of a very, very troubled and troubling sect! And finally, the video gets the pronunciation of "Amish" wrong. It is pronounced "Ah-mish", not "aim-ish." If the video can't get something as basic as that right, then it isn't to be trusted as a source of accurate information!

It is not fair to stereotype all Amish as the same. For example, incest is a problem in some communities but not in others. It all depends on the teaching they receive and the role models of a particular community. It is sort of like any place else in the world.

Ca fait peur quand même ce rattachement à des croyances religieuses qui excluent toutes reconnaissances scientifiques alors qu'ils utilisent des voitures ou portent des lunettes. Le seul avantage que l'on pourrait leur conférer c'est cet esprit de communauté ainsi qu'un certain respect de leur environnement sur lequel ils ont un impact relativement réduit.

A chacun sa foi, j'ai 58 ans je suis catholique non pratiquante, mais je n'ai plus allumé ma télé depuis plus d'un an et ça ne me manque pas. Je pourrais vivre dans ce genre de communauté car je vis seule avec mes 2 chats, mes enfants, je les vois rarement à part ma dernière 2 fois par an. La seule chose qui me manquerait le portable pour les jeux. :)

This documentary is mostly correct, but seems to suffer from several mischaracterizations. First of all, the backsides of the Lancaster Amish were shown, but then interviews done with the River Brethren - referred to as Amish; which are not Amish but a different group that does use electricity. The Mennonites also fall under a different group. They are all under what is known as Anabaptist. In addition, technology, with the exception of TV, is not regarded as 'evil', but rather something to be avoided because it can possibly pull members away from their dependence upon each other and away from the group.

I learned a little about this people when I watched the movie "Witness" (1985 movie) starring Harrison Ford.
I am a native of Pennsylvania, and grew up around Amish and Mennonite communities. This video amounts to little more than propaganda. Also, it conflates Amish and Mennonite practices a little too freely. For example, it talks about a Mennonite high school. But Amish kids, as opposed to Mennonite kids, only to to school up to the 8th grade.
The video also utterly ignores the problem of incest, which is widespread among the Amish. All in all, this video amounts to a whitewash of a very, very troubled and troubling sect!
And finally, the video gets the pronunciation of "Amish" wrong. It is pronounced "Ah-mish", not "aim-ish." If the video can't get something as basic as that right, then it isn't to be trusted as a source of accurate information!
They also said that the Old Order Amish are the most strict group within the Amish. But I think the Swartzentruber Amish are??
@@jantjej8619 they are the same, just most call them old order. I drive for the amish in Ohio and this film was a mix of amish and mennonite and not real accurate.

It is not fair to stereotype all Amish as the same. For example, incest is a problem in some communities but not in others. It all depends on the teaching they receive and the role models of a particular community. It is sort of like any place else in the world.
@@ernesteby2793 -- I never said all Amish. But it is a serious problem within many Amish communities, and many of those communities are none too eager to cooperate with law enforcement on those cases, and believe -- incorrectly -- that it is something they can "handle" among themselves.
