    A lovely collection of radios, especially the eighties era ones. I have the FRG-7700 which I use for special occasions.
    You're lucky with local reception conditions by the looks of it, I get too much noise to justify a collection of table tops.

    • @OxfordShortwaveLog
      @OxfordShortwaveLog  2 года назад

      Thanks Mark. Yes, most of the time the noise-floor at my QTH is reasonable to low. A mag loop will always help though. 73

    I've had a FRG-7700 since it first came out in the early 1980's. It sat dormant for about 20 years when I was moving about and didn't have an antenna up. Fired it up a few years ago and it works fine. I really like the set. I'm a licensed amateur radio operator and use it along with a separate transmitter at times.

    Nice collection of table top radios. It is good to shop around and be patient to find the best buy. I done that with my collection too. You don't have to pay top dollar to have a great collection of radios. Very impressive radios indeed. Thank you for sharing this. I hope you are staying cool in August. I'm currently in Florida taking a vacation. It is really hot here lol. Take care Clint. 73 my friend. 😊

    Thank you sir. I was waiting till the end to see if you showcased the wonderful Lowe HF-150, the only set I have acquired used. My first was a Drake SW-1 followed by the Icom R-75 sync and now the Lowe. I wish SW was as it was.

    A very interesting overview. Tabletop receivers don’t seem to be in fashion these days, evidenced by the lack of such models in the current catalogue from the traditional manufacturers. I’ve recently got back into SWLing and my daily drivers are SDR based, those being the Malahiteam DSP2 and and the Commradio CR1-A. I also use a couple of PC operated SDR’s, the RSPdx and Afedri SDR, primarily for monitoring below 100KHz. I also use a couple of HackRF 1’s for scripting applications in GNURADIO.
    However there’s something more personal about using a well spec’d tabletop receiver. I have an Eddystone EC958 that I rescued from the ship I was a radio officer on, but I would like something comparable but more modern.

    • @OxfordShortwaveLog
      @OxfordShortwaveLog  2 года назад +2

      I love the CR1-A - always wanted one! Thanks for the comments!

    • @sputniksam
      @sputniksam 2 года назад +2

      @@OxfordShortwaveLog Personally I’m a little disappointed with it when I compare it to the Malahiteam DSP2. For a SDR receiver it lacks all the functions one associates with the technology. The filters are fixed, there’s no noise reduction option, not even a RF/IF control or attenuator. On strong broadcast stations it’s easily overloaded and suffers blocking from strong nearby stations. On strong MW stations, such as TalkSport and Radio5, there is pronounced AGC pumping irrespective of the bandwidth selected or the limited AGC setting options (the AGC cannot be turned off). Performance below 500KHz is very poor, though the manual does state that performance start to roll off below 500KHz.
      However, I still love it. Construction wise it feels like it’s honed from solid vibranium. The display is very clear and easy to read even in very bright sunshine. The single 18650 internal battery provides close to ten hours continuous use per charge cycle. The controls are also very positive to use with absolutely no slop or erratic behaviour from the encoders.
      If you’re still after one there’s one currently listed on UK eBay, in the CB radio section of all places. I see Radioworld and Lamco also have them listed in their used equipment sections but they want silly money for them.

    An impressive lot, for sure. What's more amazing, all were acquired at very reasonable prices. (These days, pricing for used radios in any condition seems so exorbitant - hopefully that's a sign that interest in SWL is on the rise). After the relative success he says of your portable radio video well where else can you go to learn more about radios firsthand nowhere as far as I am concerned. Hello Professor its been a long time buddy , but nothing has changed , and I keep a low profile because your channel is now pure class , and I am so proud of the fact that your content is so broad church. Your shack can change with your ham needs as it should be , but that Kenwood is just number one , and what a beautiful piece of equipment to reflect your true standing. Don’t worry Clint I won’t be annoying your fabulous channel , but just want to say thank you for all of the hard work that you put in buddy 73 s 👍Tam.

I hope you and the family are keeping well and look forward to more comments on here if you have time! Take care my friend. 73

    Nice collection, I see a distinct resemblance between the Icom transceiver and receiver and my own IC 751 transceiver- it is badged with the words - General Coverage Reciever- I’d do scan around between 1 - 30 MHz on the non amateur frequencies just using my 40-80 EFHW. But have no dedicated receive antenna- it’s fun although I don’t know a lot about dedicated SWL.

    Evening Clint,any views on the Trio Kenwood R2000 ,i notice you don’t have one in the shack,Ive just returned to the hobby after a break of over 30 years and 3 kids later!! I was a very active SWL in the eighties and used a R2000 with a Butternut HF6 vertical,what a combination, unfortunately I sold them both along with all the rest of my gear, just managed to purchase 2 of these for 500 quid,one has the vhf conversion and 12 volt supply kit installed…a good deal I think..anyway your views would be much appreciated,thanks and 73s

      I've never owned an R2000 - although I nearly bought one at a rally a few weeks ago. I hear they are a decent, solid performer, so defintely worth having in the shack. Welcome back by the way!

    Excellent video.. I liked the way that you mentioned your 'I want but can't afford' radio from when you were younger and looking at the Ads in SWM.. I was in the same boat, with a mish-mash of Bearcat scanners & Hi-Fi tuners from Sony or Trio.
    My 'most wanted' back then was the Yupiteru MVT-7100 (now have 3) and the Yaesu FRG-100, which I was fortunate enough to get a pristine example a few years ago complete with FM and the slide out info-card.
    I see you have a Howes CTU-9 there, I bought that kit through SWM and still have it..
    Do you use it much?

    Hi, Clint hopes all is well...After following you all of the receivers but for the IC-R71E which has eluded me so far...My JRC is an NRD-525G and I doubt there is very much if any difference between it and your 525........I think the JRC followed by the R-75 are my top two until I can compare them with the R71E. The Lowe HF-150 is perfect with batteries slipped on the top of a Rucksack and 20 meters of fine wire rolled up for a night's camping...If you were to spend a month on a desert island with a generator which of yours would you take with you...Take Care 73s..............PS Just missed on eBay an IC-R71E by 5mins it went for £200.............. If I can get a 71e in good condition then I’ll jump at the chance.
    How does your 990s compare to these when receiving a/w broadcast stations. Just wondering if for example a yaesu ftdx10 or icom 7300 would perform on receive…
