- In this video, I show how to set up AOV’s like Z depth and ambient occlusion passes, as well as how to create light groups to create useful render passes with Arnold in Maya. After that, I show how you can combine these render passes in Photoshop and use some filters and adjustment layers to make your 3d renders shine, as they should!

11:45 adding Depth of field

Render passes used:
- Z depth
- AmbientOcclusion (using Arnold’s AiAmbient Occlusion material)
- Mask (using AiFlat)
- ID
-Beauty (one for each light)
- Diffuse (direct/indirect)
- Specular (direct/indirect)
Creating these render passes gives you a lot of control in Photoshop and allows you to get the most out of your 3d models. Especially the Camera Raw filter is a fantastic tool to experiment with. There are a ton of cool presets to try out for inspiration and then there is a ton of other settings to experiment with. There are a lot of basic functions like level and HSV adjustments, as well as sharpen, texture, and vibrance to name a few. I find especially the Split-toning super fun to experiment with different color schemes. If you watch Transformers or the Island (2007) you will see this effect and I think if used properly it makes for stunning, very cinematic visuals.
I hope this video was helpful and you create some awesome renders. Feel free to reach out on my artstation (artstation.com/lukaskut/) or youtube if you would like to share results or leave a comment if you have a question, as I usually try to get back to every question.
I appreciate a like, comment, and subscription as this is good feedback to see what content you guys like.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

Can please someone to help me with the export/safe the passes, what is the safe settings ?Because I can't safe for instance the AO pass or the Z pass it safe with the colour info or totally white.
Thank you
Thank you. I'm having trouble rendering out a shadow pass for the gobo filter. Would you happen to know how to do that?
hey can you help me ? how to remove sky background due to the skydome light? i dunno how to get the black background like your scene thanks dude
Hi , I would like to render only albedo map. I have a character which is handpainted and I wanna render it just like I do in Marmoset. Should I only add albedo_Diffuse as AOV? or are there something else should I need to add ?
I render some passes using arnold in exr format but why is file size big? I mean i was trying to export those passes on nuke but it’s unable to load due to big file size. How can i solve this? Please help
Lukas fantastic tutorial! I really appreciate it. There is just one thing I tried but I didn't manage to make it work, how do you save all the passes in one exr file? or do you save it one by one? Thank you, keep up the good work.
I think there is a merge AOV option you can check when you select the driver of any aov in the aov tab of the render settings and that opens up the option in the Attribute editor to ‚merge aov‘ . That’s how I remember it. Else you can just Swith to any pass after the render is finished and save it out as exr. Glad you like my tutorials!
@@3dsculptingtutorials thanks :)
I'm searching to find a way to make AOVs work in renders that were generated using the GPU. I literally can't find anything about. Whenever I render using the GPU I import the renders in Nuke and the passes are supposedly there but can't be edited.
It was very helpful. Thank you. But I have a question. By any chance, may I ask what the setting of SkyDome light is?
I used HDR file for SkyDome light, but AO and Mask are blurry or white.
AO and Mask come out well after deleting SkyDome Light. SkyDome Light Attributes also set the Camera of Visibility to 0.000 because the background should not appear. No other settings have been modified. What could be the problem? Please help me.
That's suprising to me, because AO should not work based on lighting, same with the mask. Maybe you'll have to render these passes separately then, if it works without the hdri
@@3dsculptingtutorials These answers are also very helpful. thank you~ thank you~ have a nice day~
Do you know how to comp AOV's into After Effects?
My teacher praises this video, I will count for many views😂
Have you got the timelapse of making this character and if so will you upload it?
Unfortunately not, but a full character timelapse is something I plan to do
what about Pref pass?
Hello you could help me, I did the same steps as you but the aov of the mask does not work
have you figured that out?
Very helpful, thank you for sharing!
I have one question...How did you make texture and material? because the model is 5m tris, so high poly.
I created the UVs on a low poly mesh and enabled the keep UV options when I decimated the high subdivision level. I use displacement maps instead of decimated meshes now though
@@3dsculptingtutorials wow, so you did texture in zbrush, right?
No, substance Painter
@@3dsculptingtutorials thank you so much. Hope you will make more video. Keep going!!
I can't find the passes in the arnold renderView. the beauty tap is not even there. Help :(
you need to enable AOV's
@@3dsculptingtutorials i just figured out i have to open arnold render view manually from arnold tap to be able to see the drop down menu of the passes in the render view
How can I get specular aov for each light 7:30
I got the answer
Add (specular_light name).
In custom aov pass
I'm a total beginner in maya, no matter how hard I try I can't activate AOVs, the only thing I get in my render view is beauty, that lead to a noisy render result.PLAEAS HELLLPPPP !
increase the AA samples in the arnold render settings to reduce the noise or try increasing samples of your lights if the shadow is very noisy. there is good documentation on the autodesk Arnold page for AOVs and everything arnold
@@3dsculptingtutorials thanks sir, my AA samples in the arnold render settings is already on 10, my ligt samples are on 7, (I have 4 area lights in my scene) but as I try to add AOVs on my Arnold render view, the only thing I get is beauty, altough I added the RGBA and indirect diffuse and direct diffuse in the AOV Arnold render settings, for some reason in doesn't appear there. It's killing like 4 days, lol
@@farianbahal9646 wow 7 on light samples is crazy high, i might be wrong but from my experience 2-3 is plenty, but depends on the scene i guess. Regarding the AOVs did you check the 'enable AOV' option in the render window in the 'view' tab . I think I missed it in the video, because I had it enabled, but it's maybe not by default

@@3dsculptingtutorials yes sir, and this is the crazy thing about it, AOV is anabled, in the view tab, also in the render settings in the common tab it is on merge AOVs and image format is exr. but despite all this it still doesn't work. that's crazy since i watched lots of tuts to get this fixed, but for some weird reason it doesn't.
