That's a wild visualization, Joe! It does make one wonder - if Marcus Aurelius had to rely on such skills for survival, would it have changed his perspective on Stoicism or duty? Imagine a philosopher-emperor applying Stoic principles not just in court but in the wilderness. Do you think his meditations would have been any different if his challenges were more physical than philosophical?
2:51:35 Books Ryan brought for Joe: - Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford - The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant - Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II by Robert Kurson - The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss - The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard - Wicked River: The Mississippi When It Last Ran Wild by Lee Sandlin - What Made Maddy Run: The Secret Struggles and Tragic Death of an All-American Teen by Kate Fagan - The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield - Gregory Hays Translation of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius I think I missed one or two books, but this is what I could find :) hope this helps yall that were looking for them
It's great to see such a diverse list of books that Ryan brought for Joe. Each of these choices seems to offer a unique perspective on history, personal growth, and the human condition. The inclusion of "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius stands out, as it aligns closely with Stoic philosophy, something that can help us understand how to handle adversity and make decisions based on reason rather than emotion. I'm curious, for anyone who's read these books, which one made the biggest impact on your way of thinking or how you approach challenges in life? Does the story of Genghis Khan or the struggles in "What Made Maddy Run" resonate more with you? It's fascinating to see how different stories can shape our perspectives.
It's inspiring to see how much you value curiosity in selecting guests! Ryan Holiday’s insights on Stoicism are always thought-provoking. In your view, how do you think Stoic principles can help us navigate the challenges of modern-day fame and attention? Does it change the way we view success or failure? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Joe Rogan: When I read Marcus Aurelius, he just sounds so modern. Ryan Holiday: Well it sounds modern because his ancient words were translated by a modern translator into modern English. Joe Rogan: OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH.
This is an old episode. He just uploaded it on RUclips. That's why it says five days ago from now. So don't worry you guys didn't miss the episode. This is just an old one he released on RUclips. Back before he transitioned back to YT. This video was designed for only Spotify at one point and now that Joe is back on RUclips it is on RUclips now.
@@Gotnosocks I would say that is a good question. And yes it is an old episode, but a good one none the less. We know this by the number associated with this video. Now take a look at his current uploads (on his page) and the number associated with those videos (he is currently on #2174; as of now). This ep with Ryan Holiday is #1836, in fact an old vid. 👍

1:06:33 That's not a new phenomenon. Telegrams were a primary source of news during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These ancient telegrams were typically very short. They were designed to be concise messages that could be transmitted quickly and efficiently over long distances using telegraph lines. Due to the limitations of the technology, it was important to minimize the number of words used. While the exact length could vary, many ancient telegrams were often limited to a few dozen words or even less. The focus was on conveying the most essential information in the fewest possible words.
Joe gets great guests on his podcasts, I have learned so much from Ryan, his books, interviews, and daily stoic, daily dad, but Joe loves to hear himself talk way too much, let your guests get a few more words in Joe!
People in Florida still call northerners yankees. I’m from southern Ohio and have a an accent being that I grew up so close to Kentucky and West Virginia. So people in Florida don’t realize I’m a “yankee” and that word still gets dropped on the daily. lol
At 1:35:00, Love these guys but they’re taking away personal choice in so many cases. We all have choices. No matter where our starting line. Enough of victimization
Anyone else see how Joe foreshadowed his own transition to conservatism during this interview. All about fighting poverty and income en equality but somehow ended up endorsing Trump?
Joe is the wildest hypocrite out there… he talks about how people shouldn’t go down political rabbit holes, spending time on things outside of your control and about things they dont understand… but this is literally what most of his episodes are. He puts out content that he tells people they should ignore. Wild
Becoming conservative as you age seems to be, at least partially, a recognition that the government is an inefficient and incompetent way to help people. Most of the money is wasted on administration and who knows what else. Your typical conservative doesn't connect being concerned about people with anything the government can do. The government is for borders, infrastructure, law and order, and little else. It already sucks at doing most things and the more we give our governments to do, the worse they are at everything. That's your average conservative...government mostly sucks and I have been an adult for 30 years and that is how I know. Lol
Joe: Jamie pull that video of Marcus Aurelius shooting Giant brown bear from 250 yards with ancient wooden handmade bow and arrow.
