This is the Pinkerton follow-up I've been waiting for since '96. A record written by guys in their 50's and owning it, instead of the bullshit "How do you do, fellow kids" posturing they've been pulling for the past two decades. It's wonderful...which means it'll all go right out the window for Van Weezer.
I just listened to it through, and it's a pretty album, but when did Weezer ditch the distortion pedals? I didn't listen to Black or Teal, is this just their style now?
@@travistotle Nah, this is probably a one-off. As far as I know there are no electric guitars on this record, hence no distortion.

Ngl I teared up during this album more than once. "I miss my family" and "heaven shut the door on this man" are pretty powerful ways to end songs. Dead Roses is straight up one of the best songs they've ever made. This album rules.
Dead Roses is genuinely a beautiful song, as its showcasing how amazing Rivers can be when writing for a very dark emotional standpoint.
People were a bit too harsh on Screens. It's not an ok boomer moment, it's just a genuine cry for real physical connection in an increasing digital age (which reached an all time high during covid).

“Screens” really seems more to me like a warning against people replacing their real-life interactions exclusively with internet interactions, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. It, to me, was more saying “guys, when this is over, make sure you’re gonna get back out into the real-world.”
Which, granted, could be a bit boomer-ish.
I don't really think so, I think it seems more like your first point. I'm 20 and I'm worried about how disconnected people are physically now so I don't really think Rivers as boomer-ish as people assume off of the song's face value. I'm pretty sure that he is fully aware of technology just as much as young people are, it's not like he's a decrepit old man lol

@@MrMarshalltheninja I would have preferred the album to be an instrumental, because the music was a nice change for weezer. But Rivers' lyrics felt very out of place and just painful at some points. He has been a songwriter for a long time and its hard to see how he hasn't developed at all; infact his lyrics have slowly declined in quality. I feel bad for the rest of the band as they could probably come up with better vocals

BIRD WITH A BROKEN WING SLAPS MELON YOU ARE POURING WATER.
Outside of the joke, it really is one of the most beautiful moments on the album and weezer's career as a whole. It tells a really heartfelt story about passing your prime, not being able to do what you used to and having death at your door, but not dwelling on that fact. As Rivers says "Don't be sad for me, I'm right where I want to be".
The bridge is especially emotional, as Rivers sings about still having something to give as long as we believe in him which, considering Weezer's misfires, feels like a genuine attempt at rivers coming to terms with the band's perception. La Brea Tar Pits reiterates on these concepts by saying "he still has something to give" and how "he doesn't want to die", bringing in a new conceptual layer to an already cohesive album.
Dead Roses also features some lyrical highlights and even some unexpected gothic undertones that sound like nothing the band has ever done before, which really annoys me how you glazed over it.
It annoyed me too. I can't believe how two of the best songs on the album aren't talked about on the review. 🙄 That was pretty biased. They should have been talked about to offer a more objective review.

I cant believe "im gonna rock my audible" lyric made anthony cry
Screens isn't a "these damn kids on their screens" song, it's more about how our new interconnected age has only served to make us feel lonelier, which is pretty true in my experience. The second verse makes it more clear. It's coming from a place of sadness and frustration as someone in that milieu, not smug superiority.

I think people really misinterpret Screens. Rivers is very obviously not inherently anti these technologies, he’s just disappointed that people are becoming increasingly disinterested in socialising over sitting in isolation staring at screens. He’s disappointed his daughter would rather sit alone in a room for eight hours straight on a screen instead of making an effort to spend some time with her family. It's not really a criticism of technology, but rather of the people who are addicted to it.
It's still the same shallow criticisms we've heard for years, there's nothing new or interesting about the way it presents itself.
Great review Anthony, I too think the album OK COMPUTER from alternative rock band Radiohead is a ground breaking project with esoteric songwriting that stands the test of time.
Van weezer is gonna be a 10/10 calllng it now
Reading the lyrics for 'here comes the rain', I think whatever part of it that was perhaps dedicated to Sam Harris was one that pointed out how the media (mainstream or not ) tends to put information in front of you. The last verse seems to say (to me) "Everything's going to be fine, be careful what you 'pay attention to' with the news, because it basically just caters to your wants and fears.".
Just my POV on that particular line. The rest of the song is kinda just saying that no matter where you are in life, the 'rain' is going to wash away whatever troubles you've got, and you just gotta be patient. I think that take is kinda solidified in the "we're on our way to paradise". Basically, whether he's telling Sam or anyone else, he's saying "chill, everything's going to be alright."
Also if you play the record backwards, you can hear a very unpleasant rant about race realism.
I don't know who that is but I wonder what, if any, the issue even is. It seems like a pretty straight forward line. the news line is being interpreted literally? I feel like people are drawing different conclusions based on bias. or im wrong and rivers said the song is dedicated to someone idfk

Wasn't huge on this first listen, but I think that's cause I had in my head that the next album we were getting was Van Weezer and was ready for the rockness of it. After listening to it a couple more times, yeah, it's pretty damn good. At moments it sounds like a continuation of Rivers' solo Alone albums, but is tuned to apply more to the current alternative crowd more than their previous attempts.
