if youre ever keen on 600+hp 1000+ftlbs tq look at power driven diesel. they make killer kits. had a 450 kit on mine. going for the 600 soon hopefully.
Sam, if you removed your oil pan I believe you’d find a lot of the sludge still in the bottom of the engine. In the future I would really suggest filling your engine to the top with diesel fuel, letting it sit for a few days then dump and refill with clean oil. Best of luck.
The RANGIE steering box looks like a great modification - nice to keep the upgrades LR based. That 6Bt noise does make the TDV8 sound almost ordinary though.
Nice work fixing that up, interesting to see the Rangie steering box. I'd be very glad of some Autodoc parts for my own Rangie as I fear I need to do brakes all round soon!
You did good to get that back and running using waste oil was great! Miss my 130 but I do have a 99 110 Td5 and a 77 series 3 Swb 2.25 petrol and for comfort I have a D4 5.0 litre V8 need a RANGIE to complete my collection!
My only concern would be the stress on the 130 chassis the torque on the Cummins is massive in comparison. You've done a great swap and its apparent you had this in mind.
If you’ve ever seen a Defender 110/130 chassis, you’ll see that they’re hugely strong and over engineered - at least as strong as the Dodge Ram frames in the US which are only a “C” section as opposed to fully enclosed box on the Landy.
Looks to be in great condition this jeep and I imagine it won't be easy to get parked in some places, the 110 isn't very nimble so this will take some planning as to where the 130 with its RANGIE modified steering will turn into. For your lengthyou are in Ireland you don't seem to put on wellies for the washing jobs. Great video again.
Pretty cool to see Autodoc as a sponser, they’ve saved me a ton. Funny to see somebody else also getting those huge mannol containers! Looking forward to more rangie content
Loved this video! A very very nice vehicle and happy to see it did not die! Here in Finland it is mandatory, always ALWAYS use strong mixture of antifreeze(50/50) all year long as the winters are long and cold....I am currently searching for a Range Rover Classic to use as a classic winter beater but good, honest and well looked after vehicles are short in supply or just too expensive.....Well I need to keep an eye for one! Cheers!
Lucky! only those caps popped out! I guess that is the reason for making non permanent sealed water jacket section of engine? Is that 2.8L cummins modern engine? I guess it does not bolt on straight to the defeder chasis? Truck sounds smooth!
Yeah - they’re sometimes called freeze plugs as that’s partially their function to allow expansion to happen without damage. It’s actually a 5.9 Cummins 6BT, and it’s around 20 years old so not that modern now - though it’s more modern than the Land Rover it’s in!
The Commins engine sounds pretty nice ! Way better than the Puma engine I had in my 110 I used to own. I only had it a year. It was my daily drive. I’m obviously not a true Landrover lover because a year was long enough for me. So my L420 is my daily drive now and my old RANGIE V8 Vogue a second car. Off to the Landrover International Show in a couple of weeks. Hopefully get some bits for the old V8. Great video as always. 👍
Hi Sam, great to see the 130 up and running. I have a 1983 110 pick up to restore. Are you going to the land rover show in Tipperary next weekend?. Keep the videos coming. 😊
Just watched the 130 video, plenty of scope to make it a great camper/overlander with a detachable habitation box. Comfortable as my L322 G4 is and practical as my D3 G4 is…. It’s my 110 G4 that makes me smile the most when I drive it, i blame this on a slipping disc connecting to a cheek nerve 😁 More 130 content please Sam
Nice to see you again seems like ages since last on and yes been raining most of the time here in Yorkshire. I really thought the engine would be toast with all that mayo , maybe an engine flush would of been good.?
Rangie. Isn’t the good old “engine flush” still available? It was great for removing all the built up crud in old (and newer) diesel engines, Great video, thanks.👌
Great video Sam. Once you have the engine at operating temperature for an hour or so it should vaporise any remaining water or emulsion in the system. RANGIE
...and when you've finished with that old engine oil keep it to creosote your fences! Like most things here in Ireland: "Shure your'e not supposed to, but....." As a fellow Englishman who moved to Kilkenny five years ago I'm still getting used to, and assimilated by, the Irish way of life. And I'm loving it!
Cheers for the comment Bushman! We're loving it too - the country and the people and the relaxed way of life. Don't think I'll be going back to the UK, not for a while anyway!
Well done Sam!! We are looking forward to more travelling content :) If I may suggest mate, turn the mic around so your t-shirt acts as a wind muffler. Regards, Fahed.
Hello Sam, Thanks very much for your videos mate. A real pleasure to listen to all the details that you have covered, and explained, and of course the footage that you have shared. Just wondering, have you managed to get in contact with Tom Davies at all? I believe Tom Davies was one of the first Pioneering Landy owners to put the 5.9 Cummins in a few years back. He has some interested detailed videos of his rig. Cheers, from Townsville, Australia. Matthew
Hi Matthew, thanks for the comment. Yes I know Tom quite well, he lives nearby to where I went to University, and I actually bought some of my first conversion parts from him way back in 2013/14. I've been involved with the Cummins LR scene from near the very start thanks to my Uni mate Nick who did the first conversion into a 90 and runs the Cummins Land Rover Group on Facebook. All the best to OZ from Galway Ireland!
Greetings from Cork from a fellow Sam 😅 :) we have an 03 L322 RANGIE in the family with the bmw 4.4 in it just passed 175k miles. Amazing cars can see who you're so passionate about them and the 130 😊😊 keep up the great work you're videos are really fun to watch and learn from ❤❤
Good save there Sam, love the sound of that thing!, sounds like the old Route Master buses I used to drive. Must mention RANGIE … but if I win I’d like you to spend the voucher on your RANGIE and make us some content with whatever you buy. All the best mate, Jim.
Would love a Cummins landrover. 6BT are musical. You do realise that when you drive through the irish countryside you are obliged to salut everyone. RANGIE
Assuming that to be the B Series 5.9 litre Cummins as removed from a Case Maxxum tractor or a 360 excavator, what are its maximum revs. In most industrial applications they are rated to 2200 rpm and governed to no more than 2400 no load. This would be very restrictive through a five speed Land Rover manual gearbox it seems to me, compared to LR engines that are generally rated to 4000rpm.
Yes 5.9 6BT. It's currently governed at 2400rpm but I have a replacement Bosch spring for the pump that will take it up to 3200rpm. It's not a Land Rover box - it's a ZF S5-42 from a DAF, which is a lot stronger than any LR box but is geared fairly similarly. The transfer box is running an increased output ratio of 1:1 (from original of 1.4:1) so she cruises fairly nicely at 65mph, which is plenty in an old Landy. Ideally it would have the 0.9 gearset which would drop the cruising revs down a bit, but it's perfectly useable as it is. Cheers for the comments!
Hi Sam Sam the tumbling man!! Great to see the Cummins again, it’s what brought me to your channel, then as you know you also helped me convince my Wifey to get our L322 RANGIE. Now got the AD App and applied your SAM code👍🏻 All the best Matti. 😊
Hi Sam another excellent vid, as always. Just a quick question : what the compressor for ? I think I heard something like a "blow-off" valve every time you changed gear ???? RANGIE.
Hey Dave, cheers! At the moment, the compressor is just running the air assisted clutch. However the 130 also has an ARB air locker in the rear diff, which will be plumbed into the air system when I get around to it. It could also run a tyre inflator or any other smallish air tools you wanted!
The 130 is class! I just found your channel and I look forward to going back and watching your previous videos. I live in Galway City and it's great to see the "G" reg on the fleet, the L322 is also really nice. Anyway keep up the good work and if you see some random bearded fella flash and giving you a thumbs up it just might be me. Rangie
Sam, you've definitely shown me that I can own a 'RANGIE', and keep it on the road myself, proving that it needn't cost the earth. Many thanks. Now, Autotrader or ebay 1st?
Absolutely basic mistake/balls-up. I worked at a tractor main franchised dealer for ten years and one of the annual rituals was to go around all hundred or so used tractors every November checking that they all had antifreeze ration correct in the coolant. Also the crop sprayers and anything else that might have water inside of housings. The sprayers were nominally empty but needed antifreeze coolant sent through all liquid pipes and nozzles. It took a day or so for every 25 units considering that some would need draining, refilling and run a while to circulate coolant through all systems including the cab heating circuit.
Yes - very basic. I was working on the cooling system earlier in the year and totally forgot that I had filled up with water for testing. Ah well, shit happens, won't do it again!
Sam, you should probably expect a call from Greta Thunberg for all the oil that was spilled in this video! How dare you! The truck is looking and sounding great!
Shit my Jeep Wagoneer leaked a quart of oil every 300 miles from its rear main seal... Was so bad i saw drips in parking lits as i drive around. I went through like 300 gallons of oil throughout the years lol.. I ttied fixing thst seal 3 times but it still leaks.. Finally though i noticed it stopped.. so the last seal i guess settled in and it stopped.. lol
She’s fairly stock at the moment so only around 140hp and 450lb/ft. But I’ve got some injection pump tuning to do and some performance parts to put on which will take her up to an easy 250/600lb/ft
I would say, what a bloody Womble, but it's likely something I would do. In fact I don't think there is any anti-freeze in the digger, another job before winter. I think the old DAF 45 I used to drive for Dairy Crest, had the Cummins in it, sounded much better than the MAN 4cyl trucks the others had. RANGIE
