Hey Scotty, I have a question about a 2010 BMW i320. It has 170k kilometers on it. This guy I know is trying to sell it, should I buy It? Don't know much about BMWs but I do know German cars are good up to a 100k. But I'm not too certain it's the case for BMWs. Can you advise on this please?
Scotty you are OBVIOUSLY a great auto mechanic but you are even a better TEACHER and great person
He sure is.
Really enjoy these lecture format videos. This is exactly the kind of class we need when we take Drivers Ed.
Scotty, I know these are much longer and harder to produce than your car repair or QA videos, but please keep making these. This is high quality content. Thank you!
If all teachers in public educational facilities were like Scotty. We would not have so many ignorant youth being turned out into society whom have no clue about how to function once they graduated.
Excellent and to the point video Scotty.
Nothing pleases me more than watching Scotty having fun fixing cars😂
Agreed.
Are you like the one fella that rolls up a reefer and gets schmoked up? 🤪
If your car has tremors get it a prescription for Gabapentin.
This video was “shocking “
What was it that mechanics don't want us to know? I didn't hear the topic broached during the video.
Scotty is a mechanic, and he didn't want us to know.
Because 🎶 Scotty doesn't know! Scotty doesn't know! 🎶
Scotty is the only reason my 2001 Dodge Durango reached 255,000 miles before needing a new motor; bought it used with 76,000 miles on it. Thanks for all your great automotive advice Scotty! 🥃🥃🥃
This guy does such a great job explaining the ins and outs of the Auto’s technological challenges. Can’t say enough good things about this guy’s knowledge, experience and attitude towards car repair, and car purchases.
I've been following and watching your videos for many years now and anytime someone tries teasing me saying things like, "Now how & the Sam hill could a little thing like you have been able to know what anything under that hood is" or my favorite, "Show me how you did that again darlin' I would've never thought to..."😂 I've had other responses that'd crack y'all up. Anywho lol. I just wanted to Say Thank You from the bottom of my heart for starting off where my uncle and daddy left off teaching me how to do things for myself for the most part and knowing when a mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about or thinks I'll fall for the whole, it's gonna cost ya close to $1,700 after parts and labor and two days before you can pick up your car, all for fixing my struts and sway bars My ex husband tried having someone loosen in order for me to go flying across the highway or worse. Took it in to another place, told em what I thought needed worked on and they had me up and running by the next afternoon, $700 on part's and discount on the labor because they were impressed at me knowing what to look at etc. Thank you again Scotty and I hope you keep doing your videos and shows 😎
I don’t feel like watching this whole video. Where do we spray the WD-40?
Thank God I watched this. My 2014jku has a bad shock. I been thinking of changing it myself but it seems I should take it to a proper mechanic. ❤
Scotty you have been our you tube mechanic for over a year --Thank goodness we found you too. Saved us a mint!! We hope to see you in Rhode Island if you head there again. Thanks Scotty...Happy Holidays.
I just recently had my shocks & struts replaced on my 2005 Honda Accord with 230K miles because they were leaking. The vehicle rides a lot better now and I’m super happy with the results. First time they’ve needed to be replaced, so I did very well in terms of longevity as well.
yes dont forget to check your suspension especially before winter!!! 8:32
My truck had some vibrating for a month along with a squeaky sound. Then last week it started vibrating harshly, but the sound went away. At first it was only at 70 mph, but then 2 days later it was doing it around 40 then all the time. I took it in to get balanced, rotated and aligned. Guess what! It still did even after all that. Went to my mechanic this morning and found out both my back u joints were bad. Now I have a very smooth driving truck!
Thanks Scotty for your videos!
Great video. Thank you. Cheers.
This was GREAT! Thank you, Scotty! Well done!
Thank you for the comprehensive and thorough explanations. It’s why Scotty Rules!
By far the best educational series going when it comes to mechanical issues
Thanks for the information.
Thanks for the information
Outstanding content Scotty. I would be shocked if you did not have a huge staff of people working behind the scenes.
Great video explained 👏
Always watch your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. I’ve followed your advice on many issues. Thanks Scotty !!!
Thanks Professor Kilmer.
Thanks Scotty, ive had my car pulling hard to the side sometimes, gotta check that out
Another awsome job. I love learning about all the different car repairs. Scotty makes it easy
Thanks Scotty. Good data
You’ve got a super brain for automotive engineering and education, thanks for sharing it with us 🤓
Always a big help scotty
Lots of the commenters want you to go into teaching at a tech school, but Scotty, you are better on youtube where I can slow your voice down 25% to the understandable level.
Great video appreciate your time
God Bless You - Your Information About Vehicles Is Unsurpassed, Welcomed & Appreciated. Keep Them Coming - Champ.
Great presentation. Well done and technically accurate.
Excited to learn
Great insight sir!
Fantastic information. Thank you!!
Excellent video.
Well done.
The shop that I go to helps keep my car properly maintained by reminding me of problems if I don't notice them when I get my oil change
Always great information and always presented well. Thank you.
Great stuff!
Great video 👍
Have an old door creaking sound everytime I turn or just drive over a slightly uneven surface
Rear shocks were replaced 2 yrs ago and it seems like the front one's are gone now? But the mechanic was not able to diagnose the issue.
Wish Scotty had talked about any noise issues that can be a symptom? 🤔
Thank you for helping us. We love you, God bless
Great video, Scotty!!!!!!❤❤❤
You are awesome you tell it as you see it and not afraid to speak your mind
Great video!!
Well done!
I bought a set of KYB strut assemblies. They also came with the strut mounts.
Awesome very informative
Excellent
Thank you very clear and useful information Good Job
I always look at his advice and knowledge
Very instructive video from the leading expert.
I have a rather large collection of wheel weights. I used to cast tin/lead miniatures.
Cars losing wheel weights is a very common thing.
Such an informative video. Well done Scotty!
Informative
What are your thoughts on road force balancing vs regular balancing? Is road force really better? Thank you for creating good content.
This is very interesting. I did not think the suspension system was that important for my driving experience.
Great video
Thanks for your videos!
You have advised that alignment is not necessary unless the car pulls to the side in previous videos. Have I understood properly?
Thanks Scotty 👍 we ❤ your RUclips channel 🇺🇲
So true real important
Your timing is fortuitous as I am preparing to replace the shocks/struts on my 22 year old Mustang Bullitt.
👍🏻 good job
As always, great information Scotty. Great presentation as well. You're pretty tech savvy.
;)
I like how you make these educational videos. I learn from your understanding of automobile designs.
But, who in the Heck can afford to have their wheels balanced every 5-6k mi.?? You check the price of groceries lately?? :)
I have Learned so Much from your channel and all the info that goes into them really shows!! Love it!
Scotty I have a question for you. I have a 2002 Ford E350 5.4 liter with 287,000 miles. It has the 4R100 automatic transmission, I want to change the transmission fluid but I can't find the regular old Mercon fluid. All I can find is the Mercon V, and I have read other people use that as well. Will the Mercon V be ok or will it cause damage?? Thanks so much, we love all of your videos
I always get the mechanic to check the suspension when the car gets its yearly inspection, I know the importance of proper suspension and how it can have an impact on your car’s tyres
Learn something new everyday awesome video
McPherson Strut sounds like a dance 💃
Very educational video when it comes to vehicles suspension, keep up the good work Scoty 👍
Theres absolutely no secret or anything related specifically to the video image shown, it is still informative and worth watching
Old School, great advice, do really enjoy & learn. Thanx. P.S. Tx.
My 2003 Saab 9-3 slid off the road last February. Wheel alignment got all messed up and my left control arm got bent. Got the alignment fixed, but the control arm is still bent so I can feel vibration through the gas pedal when accelerating about 50 mph or so.
Best car channel
With the absolute worst condition that our roads have ever been in with no relief in sight our safety is at risk not to mention the absolute destruction of our vehicles. Here in SC very few people know that you can file a claim against the state for damages to rims and vehicle caused by potholes and such. If people filled enough claims maybe they’d fix the problems. Great video thanks.
"Onfortunately oneven wear won't be oneventful." - Scotty
I live in Michigan, which has some of the worst roads in the country -- some blame for the weather and a lot of blame to lack of funding. I'm a conservative and alert driver and went through 2 front struts at 43K miles on my 18' Accord. Dealer charge was $700 for each front. Both were making noise -- don't underestimate the expense.
The primary purpose of suspension is to keep the tires on the road. Over rough roads and transitions, during braking acceleration and during cornering manuvers. In body on frame vehicle the frame is responsible for providing strength, allowing a much liter body. This puts a lot of weight down low. Look at commercial trucks. Ride is secondary and mostly irrelevant because seats can be suspended also.
Wife's 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 100,000 miles started making noises in the front as if the car was crushing something like a can when going over a speed bump. Also was very bouncy when accelerating in 1st gear. I knew her struts were getting worn and just bought the assembled version. Didn't know these would wear out faster 😢
With pickups you can't do a bounce test on it. I try to change the shocks and struts between 60,000 to 80,000 miles. When you take the old ones off, you will be amazed on how worn out the old ones are. Mechanics really need to look at them, when they are servicing these high mileage vehicles.
something I hate from tire shops its that you want the balance and rotation and they only do the rotation, almost never do the balancing. I have trouble before with alignment, got it done and next week was the same.
Scotty would have been a great high school shop teacher.
Excellent short documentary
The only shock or tire balance story I have is a friend who got new tires and all of a sudden his truck started shaking,
Is the tire store had also sold him a four-wheel alignment when they sold him the tires
So the question was did they mess up the alignment job or did they balance the tires wrong?
After several trips back to the tire store it was found out that the alignment was correct the balancing was correct it turns out there was something wrong with the brand new tires
😮
Of course the tire store had tried to tell him there was something wrong with his truck.
Also cause my friend a lot of time
In the end they gave him four new tires and the problem was solved
Question/Clarification: What should you look for when determining if the springs need to be replaced? I'm in need of new shocks and my springs are starting to show their age with a fair amount of corrosion. How much rust is too much? It's an '04 Tacoma.
Agreed, I have the same question over a ‘92 F-350 leaf springs and my wife’s ‘12 Sorento front coil springs
This guy's still making vids holy crap
Scotty, thank you for creating so much valuable content.

Do you ever take a break? 😁
Did you hear that Nissan's computer went down yesterday? Apparently, they're unable to look at a bunch of different systems that would normally be able to see. It's causing a lot of delays in shipping for parts
HELP
I have a 1995 Cadillac Deville. My suspension needs to be replaced. However the original electric shocks are no longer made. How do I fix this? Do I need to buy some sort of converter for different shocks? Can anyone point me in the different to what I need to do PLEASE
Front shock worn: rough ride. Rear shocks worn: fishtailing on the highway.
Re: struts & shocks the YT picture seems to imply you may be spraying WD 40 or some other spray lube on the top strut mount bushings. It was not mentioned in video. Can u explain this little nugget of info?
Not bad Scotty😊
Repeat after me: "WD49 is not a LUBRICANT, it's a SOLVANT !"
The hub assembly
Scotty said to get wheel alignment checked every 6000 miles. The charge for this is at least $80. Every 6000 miles is about twice a year or $160. I pay around $80 per tire for new tires when I replace them. So, having an alignment check every 6000 miles is like buying 2 tires a year. Sorry Scotty, no go on this one.
if your steering wheel is straight and the car tracks straight on a good road when you let go off the wheel, then it's a 99.9% chance your alignment is a-okay.
Lol. $80 per tire for new tires. Well that says a lot about you.
What kind of vehicle you have, with only 80 bucks per tire? Or it was 20 years ago?
@@MyDadCanFixAnything Why? They handle great, last for years. Actually, $80 is on the high side. Last 4 I bought were $60, 2 mos ago. You do you I'll do me.
@@alexfonov8350 3 vehicles. 07 Honda fit sport, 99 Dodge Grand caravan, 08 Nissan versa. Original owner for all. Actually, last 4 I bought for my Honda were $60, 2 mos ago. They're great. Not Michelins but not $150 either. Anything else?
Hope some Brits can clarify here. In the UK many years ago there was a "Bounce test" we had,if it bounces like twice it needed new shocks....so the mechanics at these quick fit garages ie Jiffy lube/Pep boys you have over there,BUT mechanics here took advantage of this & said it needs new shocks! These garages would say it bounces twice & DVLA/VOSSA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) or (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) found out the public was being conned the people in charge of the safety of vehicles during yearly testing was real mad. We would've spend money on new shocks! So it was changed to the leaking from the shocks,if shocks leaked to over a quarter way down then it needed shocks unless it bounced like 3 times and it would fail the MOT (Ministry of Transport) a yearly inspection.
When going to the shop never ever ever accept an open box or bag with supposed new parts in. Having to replace the top bush on my suspension again after 2000 miles thanks to a dodgy part from an open box.
One time I was washing my Subaru Forester and suddenly I just hear a piece of metal clang against the driveway. I found a chunk of my rear shock on the ground. Apparently it was just a recall I had missed though so I got brand new rear shocks at 175k kms. Though I have had to replace wheel bearings and control arms/bushings and CV axels on this car way more than usual.
