@@Immolator772 I feel like it was only better than most horror maps, because it was ironic. There have been some good gmod horror maps on the workshop that I’ve seen. There is a horror map called “Death Gear” that I really enjoyed. It has some interesting atmosphere
Ah, that one specific shocker scream that's been so overused I literally cannot hear it without being immediately pulled right out of the mood. A+ good start
I've had gmod addons remove critical textures and other files when uninstalling before, one time I even got restricted from using admin stuff despite playing single player becase uninstalling an addon deleted a file related to who's considered admin in the server (shoutouts to GMOD's support team for managing to figure it out and help me fix it!). If you're having problems with texture loss or models rendering poorly, your best bet is to just save all current addons to a steam workshop collection or to favorites, uninstall them, boot up gmod and load a map temporarily like flatgrass, then close gmod, then uninstall gmod, and finally re-install gmod, verify files, and re-install your addons, one by one. It's tedious, but it's fixed problems for me a few times now.
@@adirblazkowics7717 Source engine is very versatile and moddable, but when you're working with upwards of 200 mods at once sometimes like me, because I make poor life choices, it gets fucky. But that moddability is also it's main selling point. The community makes a lot of cool stuff and figuring out where to _stop_ is always the hardest part of browsing the Steam community addons page.
What an utter delight of a map! Truly well-done satire, excellent writing especially considering the creator’s using English as a second language, and fun stylish presentation.
4:02 omg exactly. when i was going through the map, before learning how the proximity worked i was absolutely terrified of encountering jumpscares. it almost makes me think: letting the audience know there's a jumpscare coming is almost more tense and stressful then just encountering it on its own--although it does lessen the "jump" of the jumpscare. while jumpscares can be useful in their own right, just letting the audience build the tension for themselves can be effective. 9:45 i didn't turn around immediately for this part, so the warning was a little more effective. funny to see you just whip around and get spooked before the map could warn you lol 12:42 i'm pretty sure that checkerboard thing is an issue with the bump-map of the texture, when it doesn't have a correct one assigned in its .vmt... i'm no expert but you should either use a different texture or maybe look into seeing if it's a problem with the actual game if it was working before...
What's also funny and has to be intentional is that same sounds just keep looping on and on. I noticed that with many horror maps. It's like creator used just a single audio file called "spooky ambience" and it's always some cliché audio playing non-stop with few sound effects on top. And those sound effects make no sense.
The image from thst first jumpscare has recently and quite prominently been used in the film Luther: The Last Sun this year. Was going mad trying to figure out where I'd seen it before, and you've got it in the thumbnail! Thanks haha
the checkerboarding is a usually the result of a missing texture, or the games inability to find the texture. Texture may be present, just in the wrong directory.
This type of lighting and visual effect gives my point of this area looks had a very high approximate scare level and also it looks good when you got a black & white vision that improves the horror gameplay
This makes me want to make an actually functional Gmod horror map, with a cohesive, thought-out story, but I’ve never even played Gmod, let alone made a map lol. If anyone sees this and has the same aspirations and the ability to carry through, the story was basically like the SCP games, but you’re a tester in a crowbar factory/research facility (which is why you have a crowbar lol), and some “living” crowbar experiment goes terribly wrong. Contrary to the trope, you would not be in the room when it goes wrong. Your choices: escape alive, or hunt down the monstrous living crowbars. Player character identity: established Purpose: established Setting: explained Crowbar monsters: playing with their food
I found a mod that might help you when you go exploring in GMOD maps, it's called "Player depends model" you can edit how tall you can be or how much health you can have, meaning you can edit your size and not see through the map every time you go through a vent.
I kind of have to agree, having the proximity detector actually does add a level of tension... at least in the beginning. Once you've gotten used to the jumpscares, it becomes a "oh, I wonder what it is this time" sort of deal. Still pretty funny, though.
Hey Librarian, Im working on a huge liminal space / backrooms map in Garrys Mod. I've recreated tons of reference images liminal spaces and now I just have to bridge them all together seamlessly and believably. Is there any way I can get you to test it out in its alpha state? I "think" you might find it interesting because of the size of the level and variety of envirornments.
Ironically isn't the point of the backrooms and most liminal spaces to be "illogical", like a corridor can go from huge to small with one corner turn or have random pillars and then random walls serving no purpose for the rooms?
@@CloneLoli True. Though I cant go too wild with the extreme in space transitions all the time since that might shorten what would be 6 hallways down to 1 turn of a corner. Im thinking of laying things out in a 3D gradient to get a bit of everything. For instance the lower you go the darker it gets, the further west you go the more distorted architecture gets, and the more south you go the more weathered away everything becomes

I remember the youtubers Super Best Friends Play would play through horror games for like every day during October before they broke up. Called it "Shitstorm of Scariness". Oddly enough, there was only one game out of the hundreds they played that they stopped playing because it was too scary called Deliverance. Not technically recommending it since the first half is just generic asylum horror and has negative reviews, but I do remember the part that made them quit being an oddly effective PT rip off
I feel like if you stripped away the jumpscares and horror elements, you'd have a liminal space map with how harshly the scenery changes location to location.
