14:19 Amen to that! Cheers everyone that loves to see John's standard-time-control games! You're absolutely right John - we are indeed heavily invested in these videos, and because of this are some of your most loyal fans. :) The instructional and entertainment value you provide in these videos is far and away the best on youtube and even exceeds premium videos from the likes of industry competitors. After all, most of us are looking to improve our 'serious' game, and the only way that can be done is through OTB tournaments - and these videos, although only 15-minute, give us a clear program for that improvement and insight into what is needed at a competitive level. Keep them coming! Cheers!
John your standard games are not just some of your own best videos they're simply just some of the best chess videos available anywhere thank you so much for doing these they have helped me tremendously
These videos have the highest quality! The deeper insight and the explained thought process are both really valuable. Will always watch your standard games! A true gem in the midst of all the blitz and bullet games that are posted online. Thank you, John!
You are correct. I watch all your time controls, but get the most out of the standard time control videos. I am a 1500 otb. Thank you for continuing them!
I reached home at 10:00 am after 30 hours whithout sleep (I play in a band at the nights) and the first thing I am doing is watch this vídeo. love the standard games
I think this illustrates the limitation of many highly tactical players, (at least from my experience) they really don't tend to have any strategic plans, they just like to dive into the tactics right away without long-term goals, and when the tactics aren't there, there's nothing left for them to do in the position.
Sure, it's fun to watch 45 minutes of bullet games, too. But your commentary is gold. It's such great instruction of how a player should think during the game.
Thanks for another educational and entertaining video John. I agree with the 15 minute game comments...perfect length for commentary. Have a great week in Arizona at the chess camp!
Love you John! And I'm really glad that I found this gem but just sad that I'm watching this after so long and when you don't even post anymore, not as frequent atleast. I'm a beginner (1200ish) and I win games in streaks everytime I play after watching your videos! This is great help! And I've decided that I'm gonna reach atleast 1600 using the content of your videos only. And then maybe I'll be financially good enough to buy your Chessable courses so will do that too! Thanks a lot man I've become a huge fan of you and I just can't thank you enough for this. - vik :)
Played one of my first 15+10 games today where I felt like I really used all my time effectively. It was still a loss but I'm glad I've kicked the short attention span and got some good thinks in Love the longer time format content, and especially the advice about how to get better. Thanks for the great videos John!
Hi John for those of us not on twitch and those that are like myself, We find the You Tube Videos to be full of excellent value! Standard time is my Favored to watch with your excellent Commentary and graphic pointers, they meld together just outstandingly. i greatly;y enjoy and benefit from the climbing the rating ladder as well. If you think from what I've just described that I may still be missing something else then please let this major fan know.
I don't know who is stronger in Chess between you and guys like Levi Rosen and that Adgimator guy, for instance, but I do know you are the best teacher\annotator. You are always clear and concise and easy to follow. You might be the best player too, but I sure wish I could catch you more on youtube going over those grandmaster games.
Hey john thanks so much for this standard games!! really helped me improving. i just ordered karpovs book since you mentioned it helped you to improve. But im not sure how to study it to get the most out of it.. maybe a short vid how to work with a chessbook in general in an efficient way and not just superficially? Keep up the good work, really love it ;)
Speaking of the Najdorf, would you consider MVL the current premier practitioner of the opening? He just used it today to beat Caruana. Everyone knows he's going to play it if given the chance, yet he still has great success with it.
Nice job handling the wing gambit! Now, about your bullet/blitz comment near the end of the game: From experience, I can confirm how frustrating blitz is when you're a novice, but do you think playing some blitz might help a club player (say 1600+) improve their OTB play in zeitnot?
John, why did you consider 5... d5 with 6. e5 Ne4 more closely than 6. e5 Nfd7 in the opening? As a French player playing in that manner seems more natural as the central pawn structure would resemble a French advance, did you think the lack of a c7-c5 push to weaken white's central structure made putting the knight on d7 less worthwhile? Or was it something else entirely?
The people who left early may not be the most patient folks alive..ha! My theory, as if anyone is interested, is that the mass craze in smart phones...makes our society less patient in general. Lichess calls the 15 minute game, Classical.
Well, John, that was a convincing destruction of this gambit. As a sicilian player myself, b4?! distracts me. I don't lose more games than in normal sicilian lines, but as it is a dubious line, I should actually win more. So hopefully I can use in my games what I've learned from this. On an unrelated sidenote, I can't help but boast a little bit. Last week we had a little get together with my friends. One of them really likes playing chess, he is much stronger than someone who only knows how the pieces move, but still not as strong as someone who studied the game. Now since I've become better over the years, he doesn't really like playing with me anymore, because I always win, so I decided to try something and play my first ever blindfolded game against him. And I won really nice and clean in a ~35 moves long game. It was a really fun experience and actually it was a lot easier to keep track of the board than I thought it would be. I think I'm going to do this more because I feel like it improves my awareness of the board and my calculating abilities, though not sure to what extent. So, besides patting myself on the back with this, I've posted it here to ask you this question: Do you think playing blindfolded is useful to improve overall, is it worth to include it as a method among others while studying chess, or is it more like just a fun thing to do and used as a tool of demonstration?
This, children, is why IMs and GMs do not give away free pawns in the opening. It's a losing strategy to cross your fingers and hope your opponent mouse-slips the material back...
I think there's something to be said for the wing gambit for under 2000s and shorter time controls. Getting someone out of book early and taking over the centre is a pretty straightforward plan.
Albert Einstein yeah he was probably thinking d5 bxd5 Ne4 but Qf4 or Qh4 both still win the piece for black. And yeah of course Qxd2 immediately after d5 wins 10000000% but at least he has a decent d pawn.

Standard games are the best! I get excited every time I see you upload one :D

Great game, John! I'd never seen this opening before. There's so many Sicilian variations lol. Thanks for the vid!

Standard games are awesome and ones that we can learn a lot from, so thanks very much for keeping them coming!
I enjoyed the steadily evolving bromance in the spectator chat
We love you John! I've seen every video you have ever posted up to this one. Fell a bit behind recently.
I watch all your standard videos. Great way to learn! So few utubers record long games.
Your long games are always super instructional, thanks! I think I'll go play one myself!
Thanks for the standard games. They are soooooo instructive.
John you're the best ! Please keep these videos coming

Very insightful video!
Love the standard games! Keep 'em coming John! BTW, is the ICC 15 minute pool an option?
I think John has mentioned that the ICC 15 and 10 minute pool is pretty barren.
The ICC 15-minute pool is pretty dead, unfortunately. I'm currently getting decent competition on lichess, though.
good and brave coments from a renown contender to GM

Yes, MVL is definitely the top Naidorf player at the moment.
Please keep making standard videos, much more instructional than other modes.

Loved it !
Você só vai ser notado, se der o melhor de si
nice game John, cheers from Aussie
Thanks!
There is no luck in chess. Greetings John!

why didn't he just play Nf3 on the last move to block checkmate and attack the qeen?
Bxf3 - the g pawn can't recapture because of the pin
WHATA GAMEEEEE JMAN
Hey John, do you feel you are capable of becoming a grandmaster in the future?
Super GM John Bartholomew!

InStinct all the best players in the world have extensively practiced blindfold chess, so it definitely can't hurt trying it.
Better was 17 Rf1 to c1 looking to 18 Qc7

for me 15 minute standard games are still too fast. 30-45 min with an increment is better for me
Nice
Good but too fast. Something like 45+10 with good opponent would be nice )
Hello
lpdo loose pieces drop off
play stronger players man!
He should resign 5 sec after Qg5. So slow at calculating.
Albert Einstein yeah he was probably thinking d5 bxd5 Ne4 but Qf4 or Qh4 both still win the piece for black. And yeah of course Qxd2 immediately after d5 wins 10000000% but at least he has a decent d pawn.
First dislike!!!
