In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Icelandic Sheepdog that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Herding Dogs
    Weight: 20 to 30 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 4 inches to 1 foot, 6 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 14-15 years
Icelandics are one of the 50 or so northern breeds from around the world classified as spitzes. The breed’s “spitziness” is expressed by a dense coat, foxy face, pointed ears, and a bushy, curling tail. Icelandics, standing no higher than 18 inches at the shoulder, is just under what we’d consider medium-sized. They come in several predominant colors, always accompanied by white markings. An endearing trait is a facial expression: friendly, happy, always looking as though there’s no place they’d rather be than with you.
It's thought that invading Vikings brought the ancestors of this breed with them to Iceland in the ninth century. Thanks to the isolation of Iceland, today's Icelandic Sheepdogs - also called the Icelandic Spitz or Icelandic Dog - probably look a lot like their ancestors.
For centuries the Icelandic Sheepdog was used to protect flocks, especially lambs, from birds of prey, and to this day he retains the habit of watching the sky and barking at birds. He also barks to alert his family to anything and everything that he sees or hears. He's too friendly to be much of a guard dog, but you'll never be surprised by visitors.
Affectionate, confident, and playful, the Icelandic Sheepdog gets along well with people and other dogs. Males tend to be more laidback and cuddly than females. Trained with consistency and patience, Icelandics learn quickly and willingly.

They bark, A LOT. But with training it's manageable. It's the perfect dog if you seek for a friendly and active cutie! They need loads of exercise when they're young. Now that they are older it slowly starts to get less. They're also so intelligent and social around everyone and everything!
We have 2 Icelandic shepherds with cats, guinea pigs and rabbits. They go so well with other animals when they're gently introduced. They truly won't harm a fly! ❤️

I currentlig have 2 Icelandic Sheepdogs and had 1 before them. The ones we have now barks when ever we have visitors coming over and one of them wil even have conversations with you. You ask/tell her something and she wil bark back at you :D
All 3 are/where very loyal and affectionate and very much perfeere to be with us everywhere and at all times. Our first one did not like birds in the air and she would "chase" out of our proberty, but she did not mind our ducks and geese and would even help with keeping them together.
Our old one of our two current dogs is very playfull both with our other dog but also with humans, but her age are starting to slow her down. The young one have had a former familiy who treated her badly, so she do not play so much with humans, but she still enjoys playing with other dogs and animals. They are definitely not my last Icelandic Sheepdogs.
And who cares if the sheeds most of the year. Just take up knitting and knit your self a nice pull over of your dogs fur!

Our Icelandic sheepdog barks at anything, anytime. Squirrels, some birds, other animals, people, vacuum cleaner. His barking is unstoppable, when somebody leaves the apartment or when the dog is in the car and the car stops and somebody is going to get out. Anything that reminds him of us leaving causes short barks or whining (taking off a shirt=intention to go to shower, taking a garbage bag out of a bin=leaving the house, my husband trimming his beard=taking a shower, me changing my pants=leaving the house, etc.). Nothing helped this behavior, so we just use treats to bribe. :) Walking with him is like flying a kite: if he sees anything alive, he will be rushing to it, floating on the leash. Weirdly enough, at the same time, he is afraid of almost everything. Strange sounds, sneezes, kicking a toy (not throwing it), moving a table or other furniture. In spite of that, he is a good and very social friend who cannot bear loneliness. Undoubtedly, beautiful.

Very! On all of the above. When the doorbell rings he always let's me know, but that's a trait of the breed and you can't mess with genetics :)

Does my Icie bark alot? Haha Wyatt's middle name is Sirbarkalot! lol Most of the barking is done outside and it's only for a few minutes at a time which is manageable. Wyatt will also bark at large hunting birds if they are circling around which keeps them out of my yard. They're not the most expensive puppies to buy - I was looking at a Pomeranian from a pet store before and it was $700 more than I paid for my Icie direct from a breeder. Definately a great breed to own if you like to take nature/exploration hikes!

wouldnt you please reccommend the breederor at least the area where we could find icelandics puppies? In my area NY they are $2200! that is a lot!

    • @tomcolfax863
      @tomcolfax863 Год назад

@@irinalipelis1207 I paid less but $2200 is in the range they are going for. You might have to get on a waiting list for a puppy so I recommend checking with several breeders to see if they have any available. I don't recommend getting an Icie if your in the city they need lots of daily exercise.

Heck yeah they make noise. Mine (sings) as soon as he hears trumpets or violins. Nothing to do about that :) but I've never seen a more trustworthy breed. And he doesn't give 2 squats about other dogs or animals, he just casually walks by while other dogs rips the leash and barks like being possessed.
