    You did not mention the grooming differences and temperature tolerances that the very different coats of the two breeds present. The Basenji’s short coat and cat-like self-grooming make its coat very easy to care for. However, the short thinner coat and small percentage of body fat makes it mandatory that they wear sweaters or dog coats when spending time outdoors in winter weather. Booties may also be needed if walking on snow or ice. The Shiba Inu’s thicker coat would seem to be more tolerant of colder weather, but would also require more maintenence.

    • @mdegginger4761
      @mdegginger4761 2 года назад +1

      My basenjis love the snow! they have no need for booties, I just use mushers wax on the pads year round it helps for snow, ice, hot pavement, hot sand, rocky trails. For cold / rainy/ snowy days I have jackets for them and they are very tolerant of everything except extended periods of rain / wetness.

    • @tonyh74
      @tonyh74 2 года назад

      My basenji no doubt dislikes the cold, and I have to clean his paws of snow in the winter, but he demands a walk every day, no matter the weather. He is fine without extra gear.

    I had a Basenji for over 15 years. He was a very precious little soul and very affectionate and playful. I liked that he didn’t require grooming other than a brushing a couple times a week. And that he wasn’t noisy at all. I will get another after I retire.

      @@dacostarik That's great!! The big Basenji rescue group is called BRaT (Basenji Rescue and Transport.) be prepared for them to ask you a lot of serious questions because they want their dogs to really find forever homes. Keep in touch with reputable breeders in your area also in case they would like to "rehome" one of their older ex show dogs (got two of my Basenji's that way and didn't cost me a cent however, she was a very unusual breeder. Wonderful lady by the name of Susan Coe. Wrote the book "The Basenji.... Out of Africa to You". Had the audacity to retire and move to Australia!) Actually, any reputable breeder is going to ask you a lot of questions. Here are a few examples: 1. What kind of lifestyle do you have ?. How many hours a day can you spend with your dog? Do you have a fenced in yard? Do you have other pets in your home? Do you have children in your home?

    Once you go Basenji you don't go back! That is as long as you understand beforehand what they require. No barking with little to no shedding along with self grooming is a hard combo to ignore but make sure you understand they are very very smart. Watchin both breeds you will see their head swivel at the same things at the same times. The main difference I see is the Shiba Inu has fur and requires some grooming. The fact that both breeds don't like getting dirty is awesome. If I lived in a cold weather climate the Shiba Inu would have more consideration but overall the lack of barking takes the cake for me. Be advised, they communicate, just more quietly via low growls, whines, barroos and yoddles. When they first see another basenji they don't know they can do a cat like low growl while circling each other or standing rigid. It can sound super intense and it kind of funny.

    I had a shiba inu for 13 years. She was very quiet and it was like pulling teeth to get her to bark. If she saw something outside, she’d howl bark. The shedding of the undercoat was a pain two times a year but I found a good solution. Instead of brushing several times daily and creating flying hair, I’d wait a bit and keep an eye on how her coat looked. When it starts coming out to the point that she looked like she had mange or something, I’d give her a bath. Get a cup to put hair that collects around the drain in and wash with shampoo, comb while shampoo is in the hair and then rinse. I’d do that twice and then use conditioner on her to get the rest of the hair to rinse out. After that she’d run around the house like a maniac. I’d call it her spin dry! This was the best way I found to deal with that undercoat as brushing just seemed to cause the hair to multiply. I’d do this twice a year. My shiba was very agile and used to bully around 3 Saint Bernards. They could never catch her. 😂 she would nip at their hind quarters to get them to chase her and then she’d run away. she listen when other people in the family would give her commands but lazily. When I trained her, I would snap my fingers as I would give commands to get her attention. This worked great as I could snap my fingers and point to the ground and she would hear the snap, look at me, see the gesture and sit without having to break a conversation with another person. When she was outside, I’d never have to yell for her. I’d just extend my had out of the back door and snap my fingers and she’d come running. Due to this, I was her alpha and she would listen to me over all others and if I was out of view and she was awake, I would always see her peering around the corner to see what I was doing. She would even follow me into the bathroom. All dogs have their own personalities just like people. All the bad things you hear about shiba inus is because of the trainer. If you are consistent and the alpha, shibas are great dogs. If you trip up on that consistency even once, you ruin that task/chore forever. I would never let my dog on the couch. She never went on it even when I wasn’t home. One day my wife let her on the couch and that was ruined forever. It was changed from “no couch” to “I now understand that I’m not allowed on the couch when daddy is around!” I’m thinking about a basenji now because of the similarities and less hair.

      I have a Shiba and it's pretty quiet. It barks once when there's someone by the door, in a very low volume like "oof.". While every dog is different, Shiba is known for being the quiet type in general. They do have a significant scream kinda bark when being very emotional. Either your neighborhood is unlucky in getting a natural screamer, or there's something wrong with their dog/ them.

    I love them both! We have a female Shiba Inu and one of her best playmates is a basenji. They both are remarkable dogs. With allot of the same characteristics, but shibas are far more loyal.. great example if a dog which she doesn't know touches me she will go crazy. Doesn't matter how big the dog is, she will scream so loud (the shiba scream) that it hurt the ears so they back off.

      We used to say that our Basenjis were the perfect dogs for a cat lover! Independent, smart, jump like gazelles, super fast, lick themselves clean (i.e. were almost never dirty), were very affectionate - but on their terms. No other dog has their "coolness" factor! There is a reason they've been around for 5,000+ years. We fitted ours with goat bells and used them to hunt rabbits in thick brush while we road horses! Ha!

I looked up dogs with her characteristics and found the basenji looked and had her personality the most, but something was missing. For one she definitely yodeled and made other noises, but she can bark, and the colors were off, so I kept searching. Then I saw a picture of a basenji-inu mix and looked up more information on it. You cant compare talk about Basenjis without mentioning they are barkless dogs Vs. The Shiba Inu which barks and yells a lottt.. Also, you didnt touch on "Shedding" at all when the Basenji sheds zero Vs. Shiba sheds several coats a year. Also, Basenjis have no dog smell or odor, even cleaner than Shiba, yet you mention Shiba cleanliness and not Basenji. Otherwise, good video.
