Carol Webb has been involved with the Basenji since 1962. Her love and devotion to the breed is unparalleled. She has seen the breed develop from a landrace to a pure breed dog. She has seen the early Basenji who were quite sharp and aloof change into a gregarious and loving companion.
The Basenji is a hunting dog. It was bred from stock that originated in central Africa. Most of the major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world place the breed in the sighthound type. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale places the breed in group five, spitz and primitive types, and the United Kennel Club (US) places the breed in the Sighthound & Pariah Group.
Best dog I've ever owned. Smart alert loyal fearless spotlessly clean and a very good judge of character. Better than most people actually. Thanks for the vid
Flip 74 yes I owned ine in the 70s. He would get loose when I was driving to work and be loping down the road behind my car. We also owned ab African Gray. It would call the dogs name , in four different voices. I spued through our front window one day. Dante was running around trying to find us, as the parrot immitated our vouces. I loved that dog.
Would you recommend it for someone living in the countryside without a fence around the house? Do you think they could be trained to not run after every animal they see? I currently have an Alpine dachsbracke, also a hunting dog, and he's perfect regarding this. He doesn't go anywehere. He does chase but stops after a hundred meters and comes right back. It seems like every breed I like chases after everything that moves -.-
I'll have to agree, I have a basenji now and love her to death!
@@potatoO0o Yes definitely they are very obident I have one now and are very loyal and I doubt will try to run away ☺
Are they food off the lead?
I'm glad her children made great pets for her dogs.
That was so funny.
That made me laugh. She was right he first time lol
This lady is very knowledgeable, and makes this one of the better informative videos you've done. Keep up the good work.
I can hear the passion for this breed in her narrative. If more breeders had the same love and care (and knowledge) as her, breeders wouldn't get such a bad rap...
@@AskMiko copied of the comment above
I agree! If I was to purchase one, I would indeed speak with her and get some knowledge!
Agreed..

My basenji lived til’ 16, he passed away only 3 weeks ago, but he was the best friend I could have ever owned.
Almost 40 I've never owned a dog. Wonder what it would be like
rip
@@outerspacing9207 you should get one. You won't regret it
@@outerspacing9207 get an easier more domesticated dog first. especially since you never owned a dog.
I’m so sorry I promise he be with u 😢😱😇😔
I love this lady's honesty! No sugar-coating the facts. Wonderful.
I own a. Besenji these dogs are problem solving smart, when you look at them they look back at you with purpose.
Friend has one as there service dog
Are they people pleases or an independent spirit? Clearly they're intelligent but intelligent doesn't always mean trainable :P. My German Shepherd is smart AF, but she's not that interested in keeping her people happy so even though she is as smart as my kelpie mix, the kelpie was so Mach easier to train.
I own one aswell
@@kerielwatson3197 i had a basenji chihuahua mix and he was very smart and learned very quickly. In the beginning he was a little hard to train because he was very independent and the trouble i had was he was very curious and a few times he escaped my gated driveway and liked to hunt smaller animals also these dogs have no fear. They will walk up to bigger dogs to play or fight if you don't pick up behavioral cues. He lived to be about 7/8 yrs old and he was very loyal and the things this lady said are very true. these dogs will not listen to you if you don't treat them with respect and you need patience. They act like toddlers. If my dog was mad that i left for a long time for work he would pee or poop on the floor by the entrance or in your shoe. He was extremely smart and these dogs can not be home alone for long hours. He was house trained great with kids and pad trained. these dogs have a big adventurous personality.
@@MdlnMrls I read what you wrote. I was curious about the part you said: "If my dog was mad that I left for a long time for work he would pee or poop on the floor by the entrance or in your shoe." I've read many articles saying the contrary. I live in a two-bed apartment and looked into dogs suited for that environment. This breed is supposedly one of the best breeds if you're away 8 hours a day. Are you saying this is not a good breed for that?
Sadly, Carol passed away yesterday, 10/21/22. We honor her and will miss her so very much. 😪
RIP. She provided so much knowledge and passion to this breed.
RIP. She provided so much knowledge and passion to this breed.
Rest in peace Carol! In our prayers. This video was one of the reasons why I got my basenji, this video was super helpful. RIP.
Such a knowledgeable, sweet dear lady! Are articulate speech and calm demeanour makes listening to her so endearing. Amazing. RIP!
😢
I was in Africa for a month. Tanzania and in the village were many a hungry animal. I had a small Basenji type dog following me and sleeping by my tent at night. I never let her but I did feed her. She broke my heart and I wanted to bring her home.
The lady seems to truly know and understand Basenjis. What she has shared in the video from so many years of experience is completely invaluable.
I loved the way she said, "They make good pets for the dogs..." and shook her head.
I didn't know much about that breed, really enjoyed the video and it was informative. It's was amazing at her age how sharp she was!
W.C. DOGSIDE active lifestyle! 👌
After a stroke no less.
We got our girl B from Carol Webb. She flew to Hamilton, MT to visit her friend Carol and I drove from Kalispell to pick her up and she is such a joy to our family. LOVE LOVE LOVE my Basenjis!
Thank you so much for interviewing Carol! She is a fountain of knowledge on our beloved breed. Excellent work as always!
Wow... I am in Africa. The very first dog I owned as a child was a cross breed between basenji, terrier and the German shepherd. The dog lived to about 13 years and just mysteriously went missing. We never saw it die. The Vet just told me the dog was a cross between terrier and German shepherd. The Vet never mentioned that is was also part basenji. Now I've seen this video and found the missing part of the puzzle. Thank you so much for this video.
Someone either took it or it went to hide and die. My chihuahua died a year ago and the last day she kept trying to hide behind the couch and she never did that before. I've read they try to hide and die.
I have a basenji mix as a rescue. 10 years old. She loves to cuddle and I
Could not live without her since I am a widow now.
Yes!!! Thank you! Most of the info on basenjis is so generic and comes from people who've never owned them. Beautiful dog. This is one of the best channels on YT
what a wonderful lady. im glad you picked her to do this interview
I rescued a Basenji-mix puppy. She was wonderful. Very nice demeanor.
I am very apprehensive about owning a Basenji, but it is probably at the top of my list of dogs I've researched that suits most of my requirements for a companion. This lady has instilled in me more confidence about being a proper owner of the breed. I understand the time and effort needed not only for this breed but most breeds to mold them into a good companion.
What a wonderful documentary.
Carol, I could have listened to you until the cows come home, and I would have sent them back out again so I could listen to you some more.
Your knowledge of this breed is phenomenal and I hung on every word, bur your pure charm as a lovely lady just won my heart.
The joy in your eyes and the trill in your voice as you told us all about your beloved breed just wrapped your arms around us and held this person spellbound.
Thank you so much for just being you Carol.
I wish you rainbows.
There is honestly no way to describe the experience that is owning & bonding with a Basenji. Rescuing a Basenji was one of the greatest experiences of my Mother and I’s lives, and it completely changed our perspective on what a dog could be. It sounds cliche, but there are TRULY no other dogs like a Basenji, and no good way to describe their massive wit and personalities. I have a million stories/memories of our Sadie Lady and I miss her every day. Once you have had a Basenji every other dog falls ever so slightly short.
This is one of the most knowledgeable owners of any breed I have ever met. She makes someone like me who has a background in animal rescue genuinely respect knowledgeable breeders. Thank you for this video and all of your knowledge.
What a charming woman.
ThisbeandPyramus she certainly knows her breed very well.
Agreed! I could listen to her for hours!
I've got a Besenji mix and this wonderful lady has described my boy to a t
I had my lady ginger snaps for 13 years...i miss her soo much...she was red and white...best dog ever
Our first Basenjii was definitely snappy. He loved the family, but would not allow any other children around out son as he considered him in his pack. I generally had to have the alpha male discussion with him about every 3 months. When he got older, he had a couple of strokes and calmed way down. Lived to 17 and died in my arms. Our current guy is the sweetest dog I've ever had in my life. He fits the description this wonderful lady describes. On our daily walks, he wants to investigate EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. Unfortunately he does not like other dogs. He will go up to them as if he is totally friendly, then snap at them.
My dad was in the peace corps in Cameroon and loved these dogs while he was there, they'd run with him when he was on his motorcycle and he thought they were the coolest dogs ever. Where he was they put bells on their collars since they're so quiet most of the time. The fact that they're so ancient is so fascinating. I thnk when she says Coyote she probably means Jackal though, since Coyote do not live there historically. Also, screw the AKC, if the dogs are having those types of health issues, bring in more dogs, get that gene pool broadened, make sure those dogs are healthy. AKC shouldn't have any say in if you can make the dogs healthier. the dog's health matters more than the aesthetics. also, my Dad never ran into the snapping problem, in rural Cameroon they just treated them like normal dogs.
Carl Deaton fwiw, the AKC has open the stud book, and we do bring new Basenjis in.
Nice
No Health Problems With My 2 BASENJIS. Bam Got Sick Right After My Father Had His First Heart Attack. They Were Inseparable. SPEEDY BEANS Was Fine I Only Had Him 4 6 Months. I Had 2 Give Him Up Because I Became Homeless And The New Place Would Not Let Me Take Him With Me. It Broke My Heart And His. He Tried 2 Jump Off The Balcony When I Left. He Knew That I Was Not Coming Back.
The Basenji was the favorite breed of my childhood. I would always search for them in breed books, I always wore my Basenji T-shirt, and I sometimes fantasized about owning a Basenji named Benji (I knew it was a cliché name back then, too).
I'm now 26 and still haven't owned one, but it will happen later, when I have my own land and can have as many dogs as I want.
Frida Nyberg I grew up with Basenjis and will never own any other breed if I have a choice. My dog's name was King Benjamin (Benny) and I miss him every day. I had no idea it was such a stereotypical name lol it's the one he came with, so... Before him, we had one called Rio, but he was stolen. 😣 More recently, my parents had 2 show dogs, sisters called Ruby and Rica (their show names were ridiculously long). Now, they have a Rottie, but as I live on the other side of the world, I've never met him.
Please take one from DR Congo 🇨🇩
...I have lived with 3 Basenjis (2 brothers and one rescue) and could not imagine living with any other breed. It is the most inspirational and rewarding beings to be around, even though the level of collateral damage (shoes, books, socks) can come as a surprise. :)
Quite informative! I especially enjoyed the freudian slip at the end - “They make great pets for the dogs”.
This lady is fabulous-knowledgeable, kind, funny, and a great resource for those interested in Basenjis.
I had two Basenjis , unfortunately they both passed away a few months apart . Both were 16 years old . I miss them so much . Watching this video brought tears , I miss my babies so much .
I have the basenji on my short list of first dogs. This was so informative. ❤
I have five sons ... and they make good pets for the dogs lol
Thank you for all the effort that goes into every video! Regardless of the breed they’re always so enjoyable :’) truly the best produced breed documentaries on RUclips, def gonna be supporting your future vids via patreon as soon as I’m able!

+Samuel A well this is a dogumentary and it’s as long or as short as I want it to be. #mychannelmyrules
+Vy Liao Universal law positive energy makes things grow, negative energy kills. Thank you, I appreciate the positive energy.
Samuel A that’s cool (and also untrue) but here’s some attention.
I love how she honestly she portrays this breed!
Love Basenjis!!!
Always nice and helpful to hear the opinion of a professional. Thanks.
Great video! Really interesting and smart lady. It's great to see her still involved in the breed and able to share her knowledge (even after having had a stroke). Thank you for making this available on RUclips!
Thank you Zeke, your work here is awesome.
Got one from Norway in 1977. It was not a beginners breed! Could be nice and gentle but also very sharp and quick to bite.
I've never heard of this snappiness about these dogs before, like I've met one and my dad dealt with them all the time in the peace corps and also has never had that issue. is it really all that common in the ones outside Africa?
Thank you for these wonderful videos! You're doing a great job!♡
Good to see a video on these awesome dogs, probably my fourth favorite dog breed 💪🔥. another great dogumentary, dogumentaryTv👍

Love Carol Webb's sincerity! The ending was hilarious!
11:13 the greatest line ever! Her sons were pets to the Basenji’s. She really loved her dogs.
Keep this breed going! They are magnificently beautiful!
i have a Basenji X chow, what a beautiful dog. She yodals and barks. She was a stray and a friend gave her to me. she loves people and other animals. I have never seen her aggressive! I adore her to bits. 🐶🐶🐶🐶💞💕❤❤❤
I've never seen this breed before. But I'm in love already! so elegant
My first dog as a kid was a Basenji. Very interesting, unique, and super challenging - but I made such a bond with him and it really left such a lasting impression on me.
Very communicative dogs. I'd say they are relatively like Pit Bull Terriers, but Basenjis are definitely more "snappy."
Ah I'm so happy you made this!! I've been in love with this breed for so long and really would like one in the future!
me too....
Please go to DRC Congo 🇨🇩 to get a pure puppy Basenji.
As a kid w had about 3 Basenjis. The cops came by a few time to investigate if their was child abuse cause of our Basenjis being left alone screaming sometimes sounding like kids screaming, they just don't like being left alone!
It’s hard to find any videos on Basenji’s, thank you for the amazing content!!
I am a Nigerian and these dogs are common to us, they're considered as dogs with no value at all, I didn't even know it's called a basenji till this day. They're indeed used as hunting dogs till today but because it's very common we didn't really attach any importance to it, such a Petty.
The name basenji is how Congolese call them. The purest basenjis actually originate from the central African region (Congo's. Cra)
That seems an overall African problem, to not see value in something until someone else does. Truly ashame.
Same thing with the Indian Pariah dog, they can survive anything and live a VERY LONG life, people don't care for them. I've a stray that comes in front of my homes everyday to get food, he doesn't have any smell, has double coat and he can run for miles, he follows me on my motorcycle.
These particular pups are also special as they were also depicted being the dog of choice for Egyptians and Pharos. They’re said to be more in tune with spirits and a lot more feline like than dog.
What a nice lady. Finally some real information that I can use. Manny thx.
I don’t think this breed is difficult at all. I think that Western people have an animal culture where they expect a dog to entertain them at all times.
Basenji are companion dogs, they have evolved due the way they have because Africans don’t treat animals like pets that is intended to entertain but with purpose.
If you breed a basenji with the intention of breeding out their nature than what is the point of having a basenji?
The dog isn’t meant to be cooped in small space but able to run freely.
Exactly. I think westerners maltreat animals a lot but mask it with different names n ideas. They neuter, spay, cut off their tails n do all sorts just for entertainment but yet say they r animal lovers
My first basenji had Fanconi. She was diagnosed at 7 and lived another four years. She was the best pup ever.
Fantastic information that I would never find in all the books and videos regarding Basenjis.
Such magnificent creatures, I have been drawn to this dog breed moment I saw it the first time in my life. Such a dedication she put into them, bravo:-)
I love the lady who’s teaching us about the basenji. She knows a lot about the breed and she’s very sweet
A lot of what she said fits my basenji perfectly, lady knows her stuff.
I have a basenji mix, he was a handful for a while until he could trust me. He’s been a wonderful dog for me.
basenjis are crazy they are awesome but these have to be some of the most fearless dogs. mine was attacked by two shar peis and my basenji got one of them by the throat and had it on its back it was crazy and the other one ran off. they’re very territorial in my experience and they like their space, they also seem to be on alert all the time. basenjis are savages but they are so cool.
Valerie Rodger that’s why they are bred for hunting lions they’re fearless !!! they do not care how big the other mammal is they’re gonna go for it no matter what.
I had the Honor of having a red basenji from Rita Webb. Though he died this year from old age, they are the best type of dog to have for patient people. Non agressive, and mines was very very loving. Great show dog qualities! Ate quality food and live'd over 12yrs+
I did a DNA test on my pup and found out he's mostly basenji. I'd never heard of the bread until now. Very cool to learn about
Basenji are a Congolese (DRC 🇨🇩) pure breed.
"They make good pets for the dogs...for the children!"
Basenji: 😏😏😏
This is good to know, since I plan on getting one when I’m older
This lady is so knowledgeable! What a great detailed video.
I have found the dog I want. This is such a beautiful dog
I owned a basenji which I got from a well-known breeder in the mid 1990s. His registered name was Reveille Trade Wind. He was a quarter African and a brindle. He was by far the most interesting dog I've ever owned. We took him lure coarsing and he absolutely loved it. This is not a dog for a beginner. That bit of wildness mentioned in the video is real. To me the personality is more catlike. I absolutely loved my basenji.
Love it THIS is how all breeders should be like knowing the history and temperament of the dog's there breeding very interesting smart lady 👍thanks 😀
Wonderful video. This lady definitely knows her basenjis. We've had our basenji for over 12 years now and he's still very spry. We adopted him, as a good number of them are given up due to their difficulty with training. Just a warning, they require a lot of attention and exercise. He can be aggressive to other dogs, and frustrating as an owner. This ain't your average lab.
After watching Carol's video I had a lump in my throat. Our last tri-color Basenji "Whisper" was bought for my son after we lost our first one to, I believe, a coyote while living in the rural country. He was entering his teens so she became my dog though she slept on his bed. After he went to school and the wife went to work and the house was quiet, I would softly start to howl. After a couple she would answer a little louder. Back and forth we'd go until I could scream no louder, and she'd come running down the hall to see if I was OK. She would actually invent little games for me to play with her. She was 11 when she started to pee in the house and became thirsty all the time. The last time I cried so much and so hard was when my first dog was ran over at 14 when I was 16. The vet said the tests showed she had Canine Crushing s. The treatment was very costly and I was just diagnosed with severe non-military PTSD and could not work. The vet explained that her "accidents" caused her more stress for the breed and it was decided to put her down. Once-in-a-while I will put "Rocky", a realistic
raccoon hand puppet on and remember the battles my little girl had with it. After more that 10 years I still miss her terribly, but I live alone now and I can't bear the thought of another pet dying on me. KL
This woman raised 5 sons along with Basenji dogs? That's ONE STRONG WOMAN! I wonder if they are all what kept her so young and sharp. What a great story. Little boys and curly puppy dog tails. 🤎
When she mentioned that they are challenging and snippy, I was waiting for that comment! I work at a dog daycare and the one Basenji I have met is extremely snippy and bites people when we try to bathe her. 😆😆
they hate water
You can tell they are really smart
Indeed! Check out our video of Zinga & Zulu showing off their smarts. You’ll get a good laugh too! 🤣 ruclips.net/video/bEbp0ocxpF0/видео.html
I’ve always wanted a basenji they are so pretty and perfect for my lifestyle
Wow, the woman. she is magnificient. And the basenji dogs
Basenji are one of my favorite small dog breeds. Very cat like. The one I met however loooved everyone including me! They are not aggressive. Just well they are cats with no whiskers. :D
Olive aka Olivia the lupus girl! They can be, with certain people. Mine was ok with most people, but not my cousin. Or one of my brother's friends lol We have no idea why he hated them so much, since they're pretty normal guys (relatively lol) but oh well. And my parents had two sister Basenjis, one of whom hated my sister. (and the feeling was mutual; my sister is not a nice person to be around and seemed to provoke her wherever she could until one day, the dog had had enough and attacked my sister. So she made my parents get rid of them. *still angry over the whole situation*)
I have a border collie basenji mix she’s a good dog loves playing w my younger siblings and cousins and loves meeting new dogs
She has a great aura, really charismatic lady....
I love that worried expression they possess.Basenjs are incredibly cute.☺️
I really love this breed. If I can convince my wife I would get one. Have had German Shepherds, Irish terriers, sheltie and English Springers. All great breeds.
86 or so with being a stroke survivor she's looking great. I guess all that she went through brought her to a great peace and youth. Of course, genes and having pets help.
Very well produced documentary! Very nice to see. The puppies are so cute! I am a Basenji-owner myself! (for the first time).
We got our "Sasha" from a registered breeder in London, Ky. We love her!!
I love basenji Africa
Great knowledgeable women they are a great dog good vid on the great Basenji
Dog 👍
An honest breeder! Rare in our day.
My border collie taught my Basenji to bark.
Amazing dogs, this lady is very knowledgeable and I just think it's great. Good video.
I've had three of them. Great dogs but they are high energy and will chew your house up if given a chance. lol
CycleCruza It's CycleCruza!!!
Guess I'm lucky. Only time our basenji ever seriously chewed up something was when she managed to open a door and lock herself in a room.
Thanks for the great tip!! Im sending 1 to my ex-wife!!😅😅😅😅
My one and only Basenji managed to dismantle a crate while I was on a 12 hour shift. Shortly after a breakup with my ex. There was always someone with him. Aspin (from the Philippines) are also an ancient breed.
thanks I might get on and if I do i did to know what to do duh, I have a husky but it is mostly a family and protection.
This is the only video has covered most useful information than wikipedia ❤
Carol!! Sure do miss our two, “Cleo and Trigger”. Hope they were great pups for you and you found them a great home!! 😊
I'm lucky enough to have one
She is the sweetest and smartest dog I ever had
I've seen an injured basenji run into two wild lions and defends itself. Incredibly brave dog.
Also Known as the Dog of the Pharoes! Almost wiped out in the U.S. in the 80's. This lady is very knowledgeable. Usually only bond to one or a few members of a family. You always have to try to outsmart them very mischievous but a lot fun.
The ending was amazing 😂. A very helpful video!
I’ve had three basenjis, after the first two we had a little diversion when my husband wanted a “real dog.” We love her, but are agreed, nothing but basenjis from now on! They aren’t for everyone, but no breed is.
I've been slowly searching for a dog, and have known about basenjis since I was a kid. The way she describes the breed is exactly what my personality is like as well. I have an opportunity to purchase a puppy but the reality of time investment into it, I'd feel really bad to have to shut it in a fenced in area as I operate a farm and have extended periods of lab work with my mushroom business.
Would be the perfect dog, I just have to get employees to play with it while I work...
Patchwork Gardens if you leave a basenji outside it’s likely to run away and never come back. They get bored easy and are master climbers. Mine can climb a 10 foot chain fence
I have basenji..and i feed him a lot thats why my basenji(boodong is the name)now grow so big but medium size..he is black white color and always yawn☺️playful also..
