I would like to highlight that the mixchecker is indeed handy in other work areas. TV post production, or things like app development.

For post production? 149 USD for 12 presets is still too expensive.

Love the conpany and their message, they are trying to help all of us engineers and in no way am i down talking their awesome plugin. However, i do this as is - check mono - flip your master bus pan nobs so they are straight up (now its mono) , check for earbuds - use the common apple white ones, you can check on your phone by emailing it to yourself, want to check your low end (put a filter on your master bus and cut it down to 200 hz so you only hear the low end) -(dont forget to removr it when done checking low end) love the plug in havent got it yet though, love this review been wanting to test it 💪🎶🔥

Two other plugins I know like this are: Beyerdynamics Virtual Studio (different listening environments simulation) and X-Audio MyBino (monitors simulation and binaural monitoring up to 48 outputs). Both are free.

It doesnt necesarilly have to be an exactly matched simulation to give a useful representation of a generalised situation. Not all cheap plastic pc-speakers sound the same, but there is a common and recognisable factor of degradation of the sound. Same for a car environment, all cars are different, but there is a recognisable common character to sound when you listen in a car. The 'simulated' speakers arent even my first choice to use, Im much more interested the phone/tablet (mono I asume), the car and pc-speaker situations and I dont care if its a Mercedes or a 2CV, if I can hear a decent generalised representation of what a car environment will do to the shape of the sound, this might be a very usable tool. Im curious, Im gonna check out this one

People keep saying that it's "just an EQ". It's not using EQ, it's using convolution (correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see a reason to do this any other way) - so it's actually taking the decay time that each frequency has into account as well. You could compare it to something like a convolution reverb. They could also add the harmonic distortion from the speakers if they wanted to, but the distortion is probably really minimal. It's bound to be there, though. Also, I'm pretty sure that the transient response would be accounted for in an impulse response.
E: Now that I think of it, the distortion would play a bigger role with the smaller speakers (phone, tablet, etc.), but not really with larger monitors where the distortion components are almost non-existent. It would be a breeze for a regular acoustics engineer to get that modeled though. More buttons simulating different levels of driving of the speakers should be added though, that'd actually be really handy.

  • @PrincipalAudio

From what I can hear, it appears they have only modelled the EQ response and not the nonlinearities in the systems sampled. The EQ response sounds like an EQ curve approximation because of the narrow notch cuts that can be heard. If they were able to sample the devices at all volume levels and model different types of nonlinear distortion present in each system, it would be a much better approximation. The big issue then is compensating for the specific monitors you're using, otherwise there's no point. The compensation they have is simply 5", 8" and headphones, not specific studio monitors.
I still think the best way of doing it is the more expensive way - buy reference monitors, cheap laptop, use phone audio, use cheap in-ear headphones, car system, television speakers, etc.

i have a handful of IRs set up with a convolution reverb plugin to create my own "mixcheckers" including funktion ones and auratones. Can be useful for hearing things from a different perspective, but yeah, they can't be 100% accurate since they are stacked with the playback speakers' tone. Getting additional pairs of actual speakers seems far preferable.

I really like the free one made for use with headphones called Virtual Studio from Beyerdynamic. Though it's different. It's a room simulator. Only has a handful of choices to listen to, which is great. Very clever way to test if something might dissapear to much or sound to harsh in other inviroments.
Toneboosters do also have a very affordable room simulator for headphones called Isone, which is part of a bundle for 40€. And they do also have another good one that simulates other headphones called Morphit for 30€. But those 2 plugins have a lot of choices, which might be to much. But still you could get those 2 plugins plus the free one from Beyerdynamic for half of the price of this one :)

This should be called 'Zombie Miss-down'!!! TryIng to achieve a generic mixdown on this would drive me insane. Engineers used NS-10's because they imaged the mid range with roll off at eaxh end. A bit like an upside down smiley. So if you put that e/q curve on your output buss and mix to make your track sound as good as poss' you probably will get a generically good mixdown and not a miss-down! I would also use a freq' analyser on your track and the same on an imported ref' track like Voxengo Span and a stereo analyser. Otherwise skip the torture phase and get the track professionally mastered!!! 😢

Just rewatched that, There is a cheaper / smaller version, which I got for 25€ I think. I just check for mobiles and cars and only at the very end. Used that way, it's not a bad thing.
By the way, I flatten my monitoring with Sonarworks before.
But one thing is Snakeoil in that plugin: If you only have a crappy set of headphones or speakers, you can't simulate studio monitors with them. But for lower quality devices, it can provide some hints.

MCabinet does speaker sim. just found out. name should've provided a clue. This is a good video with subtle tricks of the trade. I think they are trying to make a universal style mix these days and they sort of abandoned the idea of just making a good production and want something more "translatable" between systems. So if there is no audible bass they would simply dub a fake bass or synthesize elements on top of the bass to reach the phone frequencies. I came up with the idea to make something called "stereo cell". Which is a cellphone but with good micro speakers instead of those horrible cell speakers. Nobody is focused on that stuff for some reason for several decades now. BosePhone :)

My problem is that in my somewhat unreliable mixing space, I always end up mixing my songs way too bassy. I was hoping this speaker simulation would simulate a hifi speaker which tends to have quite a bit more bass than my monitors tell me in my room, but it seems this does the opposite and takes the bass away :/

3:31 ... thats the point i have with many audiophile engineers ... its like they say "you need this speakers and that room condition to get a perfect mix" ... but none of the people who actually buy the music will ever listen to it in a perfect engineered room or with good speakers ... isn't it the more important job to get the mix sound good in a poor environment ?

I am not your opinion regarding neutrality of speaker/ rooms. In my opinion it’s the upmost condition to have in your listening situation: you HAVE TO linearise/ compensate your setup! This doesn’t only mean measure and EQ speakers with pink and white noise at 1W/m, you also have to modify your room with acoustic measures.
I am not mixing or working in studios atm but sure as hell is even my personal living room optimized via DSPs ( built in Pioneer LX59 for floor Speakers and Antimode for Subs). My setup ( totally different story though, it’s 7.2.2) isn’t only optimized for linearity, rather for music vs movies.
In another Video you mentioned that you are also a professional mastering engineer (...), so you normally would know when and how these speaker plugins work and that they are no voodoo( snake oil). Is RTFT also snake oil? What about convolution reverb with downloadable peak impulses from different real rooms? The same is with speaker simulation.
The best way to use them is in post production for movies and reamping guitars. Revalver, AmpliTube and... are very good at this and far away from voodoo.its totally straight forward and a easy to comprehend algorithm/dsp behind this: you take a guitar cab, run a signal into it and record it with different microphones and angles. This way you ca eliminate the difference in microphones and angles and you can compute a compensation curve for each microphone and speaker... and it works relatively well like the real thing.
In a similar but more complex way they do it with valve amps and effects. Ever heard of Kemper Amp ?.....

I saw this video after I bought the plug-in. Honestly, I think it's awful. If I play a mix in my car, and it sounds ok, it sounds awful in this plugin. same with my laptop, same with my stereo. This plugin basically tells me my mix sounds awful in every scenario, only when I play it for real, it's ok. These simulated environments are nothing like reality in my opinion.
