8:53 Guy from Unfiltered here hahaha. I'll send PA an email and see. I hadn't seen this channel before but I really dig this review! Thanks for the honest opinions and reactions. It's really helpful watching someone download it and interact with it so that we can see what we can improve.
Synaikido QA and optimization is the longest development stretch for each of our plugins. Even with that, every single use case that we see can give us new info.
I like the gui design. It's modern, clean and functional. This is what I consider good GUI design. None of that skeuomorphic photorealistic knobs and screws rubbish, it's free of unnecessary clutter. This is a computer-native GUI that doesn't beat around the bush and just focusses on the usability. Other plugin makers should take note of this.
Lookahead Compression Lookahead compression essentially analyzes an input signal and applies compression before the signal is audible, allowing one to tame transients in a unique way. Lookahead compression can be achieved with a standard compressor by duplicating the signal onto another track in your DAW, moving the audio back in time, placing a compressor on the original signal, and using the duplicated audio as the sidechain input. Practical applications: Really anything with prominent, fast transients but especially effective on snare drum and vocals. \
I spent ages learning about compression and then I see this. I'm glad I did though. You have to know how something works to see how auto threshold is so cool.
yeah you can get very interesting effects but it's kinda hard to see through practical use cases. i had some interesting results mapping ratio and a/r times to input level but still not worked out exactly when i'd go for that.
I would imagine brightness/darkness work as shelving filters, where the filter knob is a normal high pass/low pass. Not redundant, but a full side chain eq is probably simpler.
I would have thought that instead of looking at a level of a filtered signal it would be looking at the difference in level between two crossfiltered signals, which would be a pretty cool feature and also rather unique.
If I were you, I wouldn'd try to censor myself when wanting to mention any company. Fabfilter especially, since it is pretty much the industry standard for mixing and mastering.
i did compare it to fabfilter c and it sounds almost the same. Take out low mids and you got noisyness, bring it in you got tonality. (Like the other sidechain filter stuff you mentioned in this video you can drop an expander on a sidechain why not ) That contrast knob sounds a bit like abletons sine waveshaper - LFO and modulation system is a hidden fruit in zip but you can check it on some presets. If you want to be more creative just go with that thing but if you want performance and stability take fabfilter.
I've seen several of your videos now and I knew you'd like this :D. Unfiltered Audio plugins are always fun to use and you have unlimited options for modulating and crafting different sounds.
I haven't tried this one and your coverage has piqued my imagination toward it. One thing with the averaging for the threshold, I would have upped the lookahead to see how that affected it as I suspect it would have made going from silence to sound more palatable. The way you do things always gets me to think and see things, even things you did not intend. Thanks once again for an eye-opening presentation!
This is a cool sound compressor even if you don't use all the crazy modulation features. It's actually become my first choice when I need compression as of late.
So what is this plugin exactly? A compressor with a filter with sidechain option? Nice that it has a one knob LPF/HPF but nothing new or special. XFER has a filter plugin too with an one knob LPF/HPF as well and it’s free!
White Sea Studio, See you checked out a Plugin Alliance product "Unfiltered Audio Zip". Any chance you could give any insight on their newest offer. Complete Mega Bundle (100+ plugins) for a very affordable price, about $15 per month on a annual payment. They do have some high quality products, but know you favor true analog gear I guess. So what do you think of some of their emulations or models they have for SSL, SPL, Lindell, Elysia, Shadow Hills, Brainworx, etc. Not in a position to compare, nor have the knowledge to evaluate there. Thanks!
Downward expansion is actually really useful, I wish more compressors offered it. You can get similar results with a gate with a wet/dry mix (built in or otherwise) but it's not quite the same. Anyway, I wouldn't personally spend nearly this much on ANY plugin in 2019 (this costs half again more than a basic license of Usine Hollyhock, almost twice as much as ReNoise, , only a bit less than Reaktor, nearly as much as two Axoloti boards - all of which can do orders of magnitude more than this can) but this does look good. But as far as I'm concerend, ValhallaDSP and Klanghelm have pretty much set the standard for fair pricing of high quality plugins.
I asked for this suite and i have notifications on... Took me awhile to find this. 10-17-2018. Dont know how i didnt get the notification. Thank you so much for this.
I know it's hard to believe, but there are actually many people who buy Lamborghinis (pronounced with a hard G by the way) and other performance/exotic cars because they're actual car enthusiasts that enjoy driving fast and fun cars. Some of them have normal jobs and save for many years to afford them. And some of them couldn't care less about the attention. I know it's hard for some people to comprehend the idea of cars being used for enjoyment and not a status symbol or transportation vessel, but it's true.
You should use MAXIMUS... It's something like this, clean, light and multi band option if you want it work that way...and way way more powerful... Though I think it's only FL native
This is the first plugin I've seen in a long time that looks like the price is justified. I like the range of the options, and the idea that you can approach it's use from opposite perspectives... The whole thing looks very flexible, like a tool that would be frequently useful. As for reading -- who needs a manual when you have tool tips, right? ;)
Plugin Alliance has sales almost daily and most plugins go on sale for $29 us. In the space of a couple months, you have a good chance of getting around 5 fairly pricey plugins for the price of one. I have been impressed with the software, but more annoyed with the manager and customer service...but that is not on the devs. Hey thanks for all the great content!
So I bought this which brought me back to Unfiltered Audio's Byome - which is amazing. I bought ZIP which is on sale right now for $29....But Byome is the one you should check out. Not sure how much I am going to use ZIP. Thanks.
Love how you get all worked up over an actual, simple, legible UI ;) So hard to tell from a RUclips - in your opinion is this thing a groundbreaker in terms of smoothness and transparency? IOW, do I really need another compressor plug??
This has to be a sign. I have been eyeing this plugin for the last month and now one of my favorite audio related RUclips channels covers it? And you are very critical of plugins but liked this one? As soon as the sale comes I will be buying this. I have tested it and liked it. Not sure about $149 but it is great to have for the modulators alone.
nice to see a unique compressor that isnt bullshit, but you didn't even touch the ADSR envelope styles, colour knob, or any of the modulation options 🤦
OMFG! You have not opened and tested what the UA guys are BEST known for. Their awesome and very user friendly modulation goodness. Probably not super useful in zip, but it is not their typical plugin. It's like talking about *ab*il*er and not showing the UI. You need to test Dent 2 (Distortion) or Sandman Pro (Delay)...
Actually you can do some pretty cool and fun things with the modulars in Zip. You can shape the behaviour of it by, for example, assigning an envelope follower to the treshold and nudging it in either direction.
Finally got my name in one of your videos (as reviewer of this plug)!!! LOL. You didn't check out the other envelope styles (where it says Classic)... There's a ton of stuff this plugin can do. Great video as always!
They released Lion today... A synth with all the modulation options & countless effects Ps... U should have played with the modulation part... Its a crazy plugin lol
Plugin Alliance plugins are generally extremely good, but also so expensive. And of course it always takes the longest time until the plugin you want is on sale...
good video and it does seem cool (useful perhaps), bit too pricey for what it seems to be however.... I think I could accomplish the same things with combinations of other tools I already have in my toolbox.
In one of your Neumann video you mentioned that you are serching for more neumann modules. I found two w491b eqs on Sweden's version of eBay for about 800euro. The website is called Blocket.se if u are interested 😊
Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter, Fabfilter... I don't even use them, but this has to be the least minimum possible to say. I so much dislike the Unfiltered paper style interfaces, but I love their instant delay. I use it exclusively on drum tracks to make them a little bit more "alive", I'm speaking of virtual drums of course. That delay has a kind of random setting, so it's perfect for that. All the PA prices are sadly high. But with a little bit of patience you'll get much of their stuff for $29 to $49 + taxes.
The Sandstorm joke is like fine vintage wine. It just gets better with age.
It really does make me feel like all is well in the world

So this means you don't test and optimize the plugin well before releasing it?...
Synaikido QA and optimization is the longest development stretch for each of our plugins. Even with that, every single use case that we see can give us new info.
@@MichaelHetrickUnfiltered good answer :)
Don't take the bait, man.
For me, this is a wonderful plugin but it is too expensive.

Both plugins are fantastic!

SPL Iron from plugin alliance... Voted the best plugin they sell. Snake oil or genuinly that dam good?

offtopic but interesting, Jamulus software ! Do you know it ? Can you recommend it ? pros cons ?
This is the best intro ever.
Hi from Brazil! I like your humor and congrats for the tips and videos!
Most of the features you'll find in Ableton's stock compressor... plus the ability to audition the side-chain input and EQ the side-chain.
