I think this plug-in can not only help with mono compatibility, but it can also create movements in the stereo field of the track that can make the sound more alive, and I love that feeling.
Don't be fooled by its SynthEdit 2000s look!!!! I never seen any other plugin that gives so much polarity while keeping it in phase via the correlation controls per frequency segment crossover with controlling the bands width. HIV sick! Izotope's Ozone Stereo Imager's polarity easily goes out of phase (although it gets nice and wide) so it is a no-go for me. It also calibrates the low end so that the kick and the bassline(s) aren't fighting for the lower frequencies. Although Rob Papen's MasterMagic has this low-end calibration/mono-bass-maker capability, Rob's MM is not doing what SideMinder Mastering Edition does. This plugin with Gullfoss and gHz's CanOpener really polishes it up!!!! How would you compare this with NuGen's Stereolizer and Stereoplacer plugins?
Great presentation as always. Already reviewed the original myself and was glad to see they implemented all my suggestions. I also already had the ME version before seeing this. One important comment: I use this more as a correlation limiter than anything else, watching for inward action without doing any widening and it is incredibly helpful in that. Part of my "mastering" process is using the Liepwing trio of plugins in series - DyneOne, StageOne, CenterOne - and that's where my stereo spreading comes from if I choose to go that route on the entire mix.
It seems to be something I can use when I get to the mastering stage of my craft. If the price is still the same I think it's a good investment. Thank you so much for the review, I honestly trust your advice on weather something is "snake oil" or not. You have saved me a LOT of money. Thanks again and keep the truth about these tools coming.
Interesting plugin. I can see the benefits for EDM. For me S1 Imager is quite enough. I only widen distorted electric guitars and only just a tiny bit. Great video as always. Cheers from Slovenia.
Sometimes I wish I could get out of face 🙃 But seriously, I'm still seeing the correlation meter swing into the negatives (meaning some stereo cancellation is still going on). It also seems that it's mainly reacting to the amount of low end going on? But that said, it doesn't sound bad and in fact I thought it didn't seem to introduce (new) problems in mono while still making things wider. That second version of Sandstorm is pretty cool though!
Here's one for vocals: use a dynamic at close range, with a mid/side array of high quality condensers 12 inches away. Make sure to phase/align the mics afterwards. The dynamic creates a boomy additive waveform, while the mid/side create incredible depth. In a church setting, or other large room, the natural reverb is incredible, and yet, also makes the vocals sound in-your-head.
a lot of people don't have a treated space for recording things like spread out overhead mics, or can't record things like loud amp'd guitars, so there is definitely a need.
Wytse, in regards to clearance for royalty-free use, i've had to fill out contracts with channels before clearing them to use my music. obviously it would be left to your discretion entirely as to which ones to use, but if i were to draft a generic royalty-free contract for you would you be open to creating a submission box for tracks to use in videos? Though I am a massive fan of Sandstorm and its many remixes (lol), i think it could be a great thing for subscriber interaction and could open up a lot of possibilities for videos. Thank you for great content as always, I hope you have a good day!
Could be handy for acoustic piano’s if some notes are too wide and go out of phase. Will demo it to see if it doesnt affect the good notes and only fixes the bad notes. If it can do that i buy it straight away. I dont need it as stereo widener. Nice vid Wytse.
Billy Buttlord yea me Too! Its so annoying that so many notes are out of phase, i’ve once tried to export all separate notes individually and and phase fix the Notes that needed to, and only then you will get a very natural sounding piano with excellent freq response, however loads of work! Cheers.

that's a great improvement for this plugin and it's not even too expensive for what it does :) man, it's annoying. i always learn about so many cool plugins i can't afford yet through your channel. but ok i guess.... but actually.. i just remembered i could just turn all bands in pro-mb to only process the sides. then i could make it pretty similiar to this plugin i guess, can't i?
When I click on a widening tool video and then remember i accidentally bought a pair of cheap mono bluetooth headphones so I cant really tell what's going on anyway.
I honestly think this plugin is bad for EDM. You want the difference in width to be big and precise, and not everything to be equally wide like what you get using this plugin. its better used on individual stereo recorded tracks so it wont mess with the entire mix so much.
i'm just not willing to make the sacrifices necessary for mono compatibility. it's not worth it to me. i like the sound of the haas effect! i like the sound of binaural phase inversion! phones are going to sound terrible regardless!
Honestly having your stereo width chaotically moving in and out like that doesn't sound nice to me. Inconsistent spatial information. It's like modulating the width and expecting it to sound nice. Just why?
My mixes usually end up quite narrow. But I like them that way. Do you think it's wrong? Should modern mixes be super-wide, or is it just more of a trend thing?
If everything is wide, nothing is wide. Some things should be in the middle, some left/right, some wide, and so on. Also depends on how you want it to sound. But if everything is wide it just sounds like there is an anomaly and sounds weird, unnatural. And also if it's too wide it will sound too narrow when you switch to mono. I think there should not be much difference when you switch to mono. And no phase issues of course.
