I'm very new to succulents and this was the most helpful video I found about beheading/propagating plants! I have a VERY stretched stem with a heavy bloom on the end (hanging out of the pot). And another that has grown outta control that more resembles a bush bc it needs cut down! Now I know what to do. Thank you!
Why the cinnamon on the ends? Do you plant straight after, or still wait for callous on roots?

Hi Chanel! Just meeting your channel…not sure if someone already said this, but on a tour of a grow nursery I asked about stems dying in the middle. It’s been a mystery for a lot of people for a long time. They said they discovered some sort of burrowing insect that likes to get in the stems. They believe (as I suspected) when the stalk has a woody center in the dying part that is the result of the parasite. Don’t quote me…but that’s my hypothesis!

I cut the stem and dry it for 3 days before planting it in the soil. It hasn't died yet, but it's probably right to plant it after rooting after drying for a few weeks. And your daughter's voice is so lovely~~~~♥♥♥
Yes, I've used different ways of planting the cuttings. It all seems to work as long they are not given water before they grow new roots. Thank you much for watching and my daughter and I say hi! 🤗

I have that happen to Fred’s a lot . Not sure why . It’s painful when it happens to the crested ones . But they survive if beheaded most of the time . Except the crests . They usually continue to rot after cutting. Still a favorite of mine . Great video! Love beheading and getting stem babies! So exciting. Especially with thick stems 😊
Yes, I've noticed Fred is prone to rot or fungus during the wet season especially when it's not well established yet. I don't have a crested one yet and hoping one day a crested one forms from props. I do have another crested type and noticed that crested succulents need much less water than the regular. So to prevent rot, I just water it much, much less.

Can you propagate with cut stems alone? I have some very old ghost plants that have a lot of long stems with nothing on the end. Hi there little sunshine Happy New Year to you too! :-)

Do you also use rooting hormone, or is cinnamon sufficient on its own?
I've used rooting hormone in the past. But quite honestly, it's not much of a difference as far as results go. My succulents still rooted as normal. So now I don't use it anymore. To me, cinnamon is sufficient enough.

-Do you ever leave any leaves on the stem when you behead? I heard that it will produce babies easier if some leaves are left.
-What’s the purpose of cutting at a slant?

If there are a lot of leaves along the stem, yes, it's always better to leave a few behind. For me, the leftover leaves let me know when the stumps need to be watered. It's hard to tell when its bare or when there just a bunch of small babies growing. But if theres not much leaves or no leaves to be left behind, like my plants in the video, it's ok too. They will still generate new plant growth along the stem. 😊
Oh, and I cut at a slant for more surface area for roots to grow out of. And my little Chanel says hello and thank you! She loves helping with my succulents and loves being rewarded with leaves to propagate and apply cinnamon to cuts lol! 🥰😅💚

These Succulent Buddies My personal opinion is maybe there were insect bites causing open wounds hence rotting after rain or watering. Mine do occur but luckily just one or two which can easily be remedied. Sun burns wouldn’t have rotting results I think. They would have discolouration or a callous but not rot unless there was a break. Sorry I misspelled Channel instead of Chanel but I’ve edited my error. That’s the trouble with names haha.
Yes, I agree, maybe bugs ugh! But thankfully it doesnt happen too often. Maybe once or twice a year on a plant or 2. No worries about Chanel, she just loves when she sees her name n I tell her that her RUclips friends say hi to her. 😊

Ma'am and Nell. I have an Echeveria that had roots growing out of buds but no leafs. I scratched 'em off. Can plants grow out if roots are present or am I out of luck? Thank you. Have a grand safe holiday season
They can still grow yes. It's just that sometimes, some leaves only produce roots and no babies. But until the leaf is dead, there's always hope!

I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm still bottom watering my SOP as per your recommendation and it looks like it might be working. I just did my first beheading of a sedum pachyphyllum and I'm nervous about the babies not surviving but I had to try it at some point. I want pots bursting with them, not just one plant. Plus it was getting too tall and unstable, even though it wasn't etiolated. My question is: can I behead more from the top down? Speaking here of sedun pachyphyllum only, btw, not as a general rule. My plant has babies growing from the top leaves and in general the stem is getting sooooo long and heavy that I think it will topple at some point and break. Thank you! I hope I made my question clear, though. 🤔
Hi Nicole! Yes, you can absolutely cut the jellybeans from the top down. As long as the whole stem has leaves, you can actually cut those stems down multiple times and get a few cuttings per stem. Say cut down 1 stem into 2 or 3 cuttings depending on how long it is. So long as the stems have leaves, they will root and grow new babies. The headless ones will grow babies from the sides. Be careful though, because the stems and leaves are quite small, they can dry up quickly before rooting if your temps are high. Make sure to have them rooting in a bright shaded place that doesn't get hot. Good luck and my little Chanel says hello! 👋💚

You can also apply glue on the cuttings themselves, but I normally dont. Just on the leftover stumps. 😊

It's takes about 4-6 weeks depending on the succulent you are propagating to see new growth the leftover stems. 😊

How high do you keep your grow lights for cutting
Anywhere between 12-15 inches from the succulents. This all also depends on how powerful your grow lights are.

Yes it's a sign it's ready to be watered na. But just a little water at 1st. Enough to wet the roots. 😊
Also, newly potted ba meaning, potted as a cutting, or newly re-potted lang with roots? If planted as a cutting, check muna kung meron na new roots in the soil. Kung wala pa, dont water yet. But if its newly re-potted lang with roots, then you can water na a little bit. 😊

How do you know which succulents to cut low and which to cut higher?
From my experience, the only ones I ever noticed should be cut low are the graptopetalum superbum and purple delight. About half way works. All others don't need to be cut low and they will do just fine. But in general, when rosettes to start to get leggy, it's good to cut so they can grow better.
How do you know whether or not the cuttings have grown roots, if they're already planted?
I usually pull them out of the soil after about 3-4 weeks to check for root growth. Some take longer than others to root, while some can take as little as 2 weeks. 😊
I already planted them on their permanent pots. So how to know that they have roots already. I don’t want to get them out of the pots. Thank you
You can simply pull on them and feel if they have held on to the soil. Different succulents don't all root at the same time. Some take longer than others and the only way to really know is to take them out. You don't have to uproot the whole thing, just enough to see roots. If you have a whole pot of the same ones, just uproot one and if it has roots, the rest likely do too. What does the cinnamon do?
Cinnamon helps the wound heal and also acts as a natural antifungal barrier on the open wound. 😊

I hipe you cleaned your shears before cutting, otherwise you just spread whatever it was that caused the rot on the first plant that you cut.
I didn't clean the shears in between because I knew it wasn't fungus I was dealing with. The rest of the plants I cut all rooted and did well and nothing was spread.
