  • This is a test of the 100 gr 3 blade Muzzy Trocar Broadhead. It's actually the Crossbow version, but can be used with a vertical bow as well.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Trocar posted in parenthesis as well.
    Total Trocar 100gr Score: 86.64 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Trocar got 16 pts & will get 1 bonus point for extra good flight.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 13.53 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.78" = 4.98 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.78" = 4.98 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.19" = 3.57 pts)
    3. Sharpness (20%, 17.38 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 225 grs = 9.75/10= 8.78 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +100 grs = 8/10 = 7.2 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 18.73 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8.5" = 8.5 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (64 layers=8.23 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 19 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8/10 = 4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: (+ 1 excellent flight, +1 offset blades/rotation = 40 degrees @ 10.5")
TOTAL SCORE: 86.64 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price of Trocar: $15/head

Got to say I appreciate your testing. It’s great to see broad heads go through the same process for comparison. I’d still really like to see what you could come up with for testing and recommendations for arrow speeds vs cut size and style of mechanical or when to switch to a fixed blade. Even at what point you would want to switch to a maximum penetration head (say for recurve). For the mighty whitetail that is!

    • @DLRinc
      @DLRinc 2 года назад

I’d love to see your thoughts on noise from broad heads. I’ve witnessed first hand the difference between a loud setup (tall blazer vanes with a three blade vented head) and a quiet setup. A loud setup will send them running. A quiet setup and theyll let you get off shots until you get the yardage right 😂

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 года назад +1

Thanks Daniel. Those are good ideas. I'm not really concerned about arrow flight noise...I've never seen it be an issue. Bow noise is huge, but I've never seen an animal pinpoint arrow flight noise. For all they know, it could be a big bug or bird zipping by. I'd have to see dozens & dozens of tests under the exact same conditions to really make a conclusion about it.

    • @DLRinc
      @DLRinc 2 года назад

@@LuskArcheryAdventures I agree that bow noise is more important than arrow noise. I do think if you’re going for a quiet bow, then it makes sense to have a quiet arrow, too. Probably a confidence thing for me.
With that said, I don’t think it’s worth increasing your arrow drop to quiet the bow down with a heavy arrow. Arrow placement is the most important thing hunting whitetail, and arrow placement vertically is much easier to get wrong than left and right. So I like to approach it with silent knight vanes and non-vented heads. G5 montecs sound like whistle going down range!

I shot these in 2020 and had good flight, but was disappointed with the performance when I harvested a deer. I struck the far side shoulder on passthrough. The head deflected bending the ferule and breaking one blade. Maybe it hit the scapula at enough of an angle to differentiate from your cement block test, but that particular head, at the most inconvenient time, left me a bit disappointed. The deer left a short blood trail and piled up right away, but the head was not reusable. I've since switched heads.

Slicktrick standard should be tested. They changed the game 18 years ago?? They are still my #1 in my quiver.

I used to hunt with them all the time. I’ve not done a formal test of them. If someone sends me a pack, I’ll gladly do it.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures I can send you a pack. What's the address?

Did you notice a discernible difference between the deepower version - that were similar to this - that you tested in the past?

That would be a great head to head battle I would like to see.

Nope. The Deepower makes a wider cut model that’s every bit as good.

The sharpness and edge retention was disappointing, it’s durability was good. If bought had a good price not bad but I feel there are better heads

Thanks Mike. What was disappointing about the sharpness? 225 grams to cut the copolymer wire is really good. It gets a score of 9.75 out of 10 for that. The retention was average-scored an 8 out of 10 with an increase of 100 grams.
