Because they looks great :) they're usually special commemorative manhole Covers for special areas. Also, a growing number of people are traveling to see these local covers and it is a nice attraction for locals and tourists. Local pride :)
Really enjoyed this one. Loved seeing the process of how they were made and it's cool that you were able to film the variety of manholes throughout your travels around Japan. Great topic and presentation!
As a person who has worked in a foundry making castings, and who has worked in the waste water industry, (now drinking water) this video was beautifully done! Watching you hold a manhole brought back memories when I dropped one on my foot. Thank goodness for steel toed boots.
We just got back from a two week trip around Japan and people thought we were crazy to have so many manhole cover photos in our collection. They are gorgeous! Thanks for a great video John!
They really are gorgeous! Glad there are more of us out there ;) I've loads of photos too. Thanks for watching Justin and happy to hear you had a nice trip in Japan! -john
Leopold I enjoy the 360° video. Esp when u r using a huge desktop screen, u can view the video in full screen which gives u a totally different experience, i can totally feel the vibe and the atmosphere of a busy street in japan without having to travel all the way there! It is an amazing experience!
I'll be taking questions about Japanese manhole covers and this video on an Instagram live stream in 30 minutes. instagram.com/onlyinjapantv or follow the #onlyinjapantv tag -John
Japan becomes increasingly fascinating the more I watch these videos. They have some therapeutic influence to me. Anytime I have a stressful or uneventful day, I just tune in to "Only in Japan" and the "Life where I'm from" videos and I feel like I have gone on a mini adventure. My goal now is to learn Japanese, travel to Japan, eat authentic Japanese food, visit attraction and events and meet a Japanese girl and perhaps live there for the remainder of my existence.......I've got to stop daydreaming in front of my computer at work, nothing gets done...gonna get in trouble....curse you therapeutic videos!!!.......LOL!!!
Let me just say that I found this channel by coincidence (probably because I like Japanese culture and had looked at related videos before) a few years ago. And I have to date not found a video you've made that hasn't been entertaining in some way, shape or form. Of course there are some I like more than others, but even those I like the least, I still enjoy, while also knowing that someone else might find those as their favorites :) I just felt like I should leave you a message, since you have given me so much entertainment, education and insight for free for a long time. So thank you very much and know that I really, deeply appreciate the work you put into every upload. Andreas from Denmark
You certainly have fun! Many people wouldn't even care about manhole covers in a city but you give us the chance to pay attention to the details. I am a total fan of your videos. Greetings from Barcelona province in Spain. Keep on showing us the beauty of Japan.
This is one of my favourite episodes, I come back and rewatch it sometimes. If I lived in japan, or even just visited, I would be a manhole-er! It’s such a cool niche interest, I never ever thought man holes would pique my interest, but I’ve found that through a lot of your videos, I’ve learned to appreciate and love things I wouldn’t even think twice about. I adore that you’re shining light upon things like this, so keep up the great work, John, and thank you as always!
Ishii-san looks so incredibly joyful and happy when speaking about the variations between big cities and small suburban areas. I've never seen someone look so full of glee.
No matter how modern Japan is, it never forgets its culture. A manhole thing may be simple from the rest of the world but in Japan they are giving them a high value. The Japanese people really know how to make simple things at its BEST! I really love your channel John! Very informative! Hope to see more from your channel and wish to feature Anime! 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
I've noticed a move to more official street art where I live in the last five years or so. We haven't got to making pretty manholes, but little power boxes on street edges are painted to different themes by various artists, and public spaces are being developed with art and nature integrated. As the world gets busier and life gets ever more stressful, there's something to be said for making our everyday surrounds pleasing to the eye. Little joys make life worth living.
Miss Communication Oh yes! My city has also started painting their power boxes as well, along with a bunch of trash containers. What's so great about them is that ever since they've been painted, they've received a lot less tagging. Guess people really like them a lot!
REALLY? John, like I needed something else to obsess about when I eventually go to Japan. Also, now I'm searching for manhole cover card's to import. Keep up the great videos John, really appreciate your hard work put into these.
I just love how the Japanese take anything that's ordinary to most folks and transform it in a profound way that has meaning. Take joy in the little things! :)
Came here immediately from the Only in Japan Instagram page! I'm always so excited when you upload. I can't get enough of your channel; your content and personality are just so captivating and uplifting. Every day you upload is a good day. Keep doing what you're doing and making great content!
I just came from the Only in Japan Instagram post. Thank you so much for another informative and enjoyable video! These manhole designs are fascinating!
Such a nice guy with a real sense of adventure in his retirement. Best thing about meeting him was feeling the passion he had for these covers. Rare indeed. -john
wow, it takes a lot of time to make this video. taking picture of so many manholes throughout Japan.. I really appreciate your dedication to your video qualities, and that's why I love ONLY in JAPAN for sure :)
This was one of our favorite surprises when we visited Japan. At first we were just impressed that the manhole covers were decorative. It took visiting a few different cities for us to realize different areas had their own design.
that is really nice. this whole manhole "phenomenom" in japan is really good for people who work around manholes. it gives them not only something pretty to look at when they go down there, but something to be interested in. it is not just the "disgusting" job other countries have.
Nice to see a country really appreciate and even re-create such as a manhole while in my country nobody even cares about those, or anything! Love your videos!!!
This is awesome. Such a creative way of making people aware of something so simple as a manhole. I totally want to collect those cards now haha. Great video! Btw, I came from the Only In Japan Instagram :) Cheers from Venezuela!
Gabriela Hiroko Silva thank you Gabriela!! So glad to hear from you here :) I know!! I have to stop by more often to get more cards! I have a small stack after traveling around from this trip. Haha!! Appreciate you taking the time to write me. ⛩ John

I def noticed some beautiful manhole designs when I visited Tokyo, and took a couple pictures myself! I didn't know if it was just around the touristy areas then, but now I know these beautifully designed manhole covers are all around Japan! :)
