    This is sand casting of cast iron in a two part mould.
    The bottom half of the mould is called the drag.
    The top half of the drag is called the cope.
    The casting sand is rammed into the mould with an air hammer in this case, though traditionally in foundries the ramming was done by hand with a ramming tool, and it's still done this way in a lot of places, but I love that they're using the little digger to move bulk sand and an air hammer to do the ramming. Same skill level required, but much faster and less wear and tear on the body.
    The inner faces of the mould look to have some residual release agent from when the halves were rammed on the pattern. This can also give a finer surface finish to the casting.

    When I was in high school we had Industrial science classes Wood Shop, Auto Shop, and Metal Shop, in metal shop we learned how to do Sand Casting which what this is, we learned about replicating something from a pattern or existing object, we learned about the the sprue and riser, and we made projects individually for grades. My father was happy about this because he was working as a foreman in a large Die Casting plant that made aluminum and Zink parts for a lot of different industries from automotive too aviation and even Coca-Cola machines, as a younger child I would sometimes go to work with him and was fascinated by all the big machines and molten metal and the noise of the Punch presses busting out the parts from the runners, millions of parts exactly the same filling giant bins going out to finished at a different division or by the customer, I never wanted to work there growing up but occasionally got summer jobs there doing other things not working in the shop. Eventually there was a special position created in the company for me to distribute a product that the company was making a major component for that was assembled in Wisconsin and distributed in California to the Jacuzzi industry that was very popular around that time till it wasn't. We use to have a lot of foundries in the Los Angeles area that made all the manhole covers and you would see their names on different ones on different streets in different cites till environmentalism closed them all down and I started seeing manhole covers manufactured in China on cities streets all over the place. Die Casting companies that had been so vital to the growth of industry in Los Angeles soon was run out of the city and across our borders.

      Foundries were prolific up until the environmentalists took them down. I worked my way through college in foundries both iron and steel. Most are gone now....shipped off shore. We can’t even make large pressure vessels in the states anymore. Heavy industry is gone along with the “good” paying jobs. Nowadays we just sell each other crap made in other countries. We don’t make much here anymore.

    • @FireGodSpeed
      @FireGodSpeed Год назад +1

      uh so i work in a foundry and its alot more automated then this lol..
      Molds get machined, finished by hand and then put on a machine where the mold shells are created and then they get poured into (Croning process).
      Aswell as cores for complex inner contours.
      So no ramming sand or putting halves on and removing them and all that lol.. We could easily pump out like 200 out of these in a day.. but obviously they are cheaper. If you look at their machinery.. i mean wow WELDED together to the max because of the abuse on the tools..
      And i am not even gonna talk about the inclusions you saw when they did close ups.. but yea thats what paint is for XD:.. (atleast in their factory)- it wouldn't pass inspections in the foundry i work in..

    Stone pots, stone ware, metal, functional-decorative ceramics(sand, pebble, stone, glass) on metal with expansion-contraction abrasion load-weight inch-pressure specifications... usually broadwalks need pallet-trucks(2.5t) pressure impact and light-trucks 15t and friction when wet-dry and durability warranty. There should be bigger niche for this specification. Customer sends materials and design. MOQ-vs-Price list as quotation.

    I'm quite surprised what a manual process this is, but then I suppose you don't need thousands of manhole covers each day; less than 100 probably keeps up with demand.

    Сейчас более предпочтительны пластиковые люки, легче, дешевле, прочнее

      Когда это пластик стал дешевле и прочнее чем чугун ? 🤔 Пластик вообще делается из нефти, какой на неё ценник?

    • @xrutsai
      @xrutsai Год назад

      @@user-bv7yr6wy3h ну разница в цене у них примерно 1 к 3, можете загуглить, прочнее за счёт амартизирующих свойств, чугунный люк разлетается от одного удара кувалдой в то время как по пластиковому надо колотить долго, сам работаю в тепло сетях и знаю о чем пишу

    It's good to see you actually test the composition of the metal, even if it is only a manhole cover.
