The Story of Japanese Rice: The Amazing Grain 日本酒への道「米」★ ONLY in JAPAN #35

  • This episode is more than just rice! Perhaps this will open your eyes to the adventure you're about to take:
    ☆ Beautiful scenery
    ☆ Dangerous animals
    ☆ Delicious foods
    ☆ Handling heavy machinery
    ☆ Booze and parties! (Sake and festivals)
    All this is part of the story of rice in Japan.
    You are what you eat (and drink) and in Japan, that may just be a lot of rice! Rice is more than food in Japan - it's used in religious ceremonies and at festivals. Watch sumo and you'll see them throwing - rice!
    Rice was even once used as money just like how the Romans used salt as currency.
    There are also many varieties of rice. The reason? Japan has so many different landscapes and climates - some varieties do well at elevation, so taste better when cold, others when hot. The taste differs from region to region based on the environment - water, air, temperature, fertilizer, elevation, planting / harvesting and general daily care.
    In the episode, John Daub travels to Hyogo prefecture north of Kobe to a rice paddy owned by sake maker Dassai.
    By planting the rice by hand, it's an opportunity to get a feeling for how rice was grown decades ago.
    These days though, a rice planting machine is used and John jumps into the driver's seat for a chance to plant a few rows of Yamada Nishiki rice.
    This program opens in Tokyo at Ueno at Inari-cho Aizawa Rice Shop. The owner explains the meaning of rice to Japanese and we even get to watch the husking process and eat some gohan.
    Get a close look at the rice polishing process:
    * Genmai (Brown Rice)
    * Hakumai (Polished White Rice)
    We meet Mr. Seiichi, John's 94 year old neighbor! He talks about how important rice was in the early 1900s in Japan.

      +Thomas Dunne Congratulations! I think there are many tourist books out there that can give you basic do's and don'ts . My advice is absorb as much of it as you can, and just be kind and respectful. A smile goes a long way.
      And of course, learn as much Japanese as you can. You can certainly get by if you don't, but you'll have a much better time if you DO.

      throwing rice will definitely earn me a spank from my mother. Throwing food in general is considered rude and insensitive especially if there are starving people on other parts of the world.

    I am from Sialkot, Pakistan and we eat a lot of rice here and trust me rice growers over here are still growing rice the old traditional way by hand, in my childhood i was fortunate enough to visit a village and actually get to plant them in a soft muddy rice field., hands down that experience was so satisfying and priceless. I eat rice almost 6 days a week and the rice that grows in Pakistan are long grained white rice called basmati rice. I love your videos, high quality content always., hands down your videos awesome.

      I think that has more to do with lifestyle. Depending were you live, there is rare opportunities to relax and dine healthy. Most people I know eat fast food especially on break. They don't go to local restaurants or something to eat.
      At my old work you were able to buy nothing but maybe apples, läberkäse, a brezle and rest I don't recall.

    The rice planting thing is so interesting in Japan. My parents are from southern China, 2 years ago during summer I went back to China for a vacation and stayed at my uncles, the method of planting rice is almost the same instead they didn't have to push it into the mud, they simply threw it and somehow the green stays above the water. It looked like they were throwing darts lol

      I put a lot of work in each one. That is the good part of producing a show all yourself -- I control everything from filming to editing and I think people can sort of see my personality in the style. Hahaha!! The snake intro and music, I put together 1 hour before posting as a fun extra! Thank you so much!! -John

    Go rice! I've been eating rice most of my life as well... and I'm twelve this video has made me appreciate rice even more. However I mainly eat rice because I was born I Bangladesh and was raised with a large part of our diet to be rice, and curry. :) Even now living in England rice is still a major part of my diet.
    By the way I'm really looking forward to your new video. Keep uploading the awesome Vids! and thanks for teaching me about Japanese culture; Hope to live their someday.
    Yet again thanks! /:^)

    Growing up in the Philippines we were scolded when we leave some rice on our plate--- My mother used to say to us-- "Do you know how sweat and tears that a farmer put in to grow that rice on your plate--waste not!"
    Lesson you never forget even though you are leaving in one of the richest countries in the world!

    I've often heard criticism of Japanese rice growers for pressuring the government to protect their crops from foreign competition; i.e. providing a cheaper source of rice to the (Japanese) consumer. A staple of so many diets around the world, I have never appreciated the beauty of rice as much as what you have shown in this video. In Japan, rice is not just a 'side dish', it is an expression of their cultural heritage and terroire (the complete natural environment in which a particular rice is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate). Once again, John, a wonderful video!
