The uppercuts are really hard to throw in vr. Also I have knocked out about half the fighters, but there are also difficulty settings so i'm not sure if any of mine have been altered. I do try to fight on the hard mode. I also wonder how it would work if you streamed it onto a tv and had someone coach you, would that be affective or not in getting fighters used to listening while fighting.

I love that idea of when you stream it to the TV, which works really well. Not sure how much lag there is, yet the coaching idea could be a fun idea. Future video idea right there.

some tips for the boxing game: i got a couple knockouts when i first started playing, but after a couple fights, it didnt matter how hard i swung, the game would indicate a lighter impact (via the color of the flash that appears when you land hits). i realized the game doesnt actually measure your punches...it averages out your punches over time and tries to guess how hard you are punching (compared to your other punches). if you always throw 100% hay makers, it will think those are casual punches, and youll never be able to punch hard enough (in real life) to make the game register a harder in-game hit. theres a bunch of stats on one of the main menus relating to your 'mass' and 'mass multiplier', and a way to reset them. try resetting them and do some fights with all medium speed punches (compared to your power shots) to give the game a 'normal' to measure your harder punches against and you should get more kos. landing real boxing uppercuts with good form is hard, try a mortal kombat style one :)
another cool fighting game that feels good is called dragon fist:vr kung fu. the character animation is kinda off looking at times (they look like they are moving/floating from their head, instead of their center of gravity), but the physics are pretty nice, and you can actually employ some basic trapping/parrying techniques from wing chun/jkd/fma/boxing once you get a feel for the game and the enemies fighting styles. its not a serious training tool, as its designed to be fun for anyone to 'play kungfu', but its got enough things going for it that you can feel like youre getting some kind of benefit from using actual martial arts experience imo. saw a clip from the developer recently demonstrating a new full body tracking option that lets you kick, and check kicks (if you have the required tracking hardware). it looked pretty awesome.
theres also swordsman vr, which is imo the best weapon combat game. i did arnis for years and from my first fight in that game i was amazed at how well it translates. you can do single (left or right handed) and double weapons (various swords, daggers, axes and a mace), the enemies attack at realistic (for the most part) angles, and the 12 basic attacks and defenses all work fine against them. once you get a feel for it, things start happening...i spontaneously started to utilize skills i learned from sinwali and redonda, for example, and they work in the game as they do in training (to my surprise/delight). you can also cut their hands off, which is pretty core to fma, and is a very satisfying result of the other techniques and setups working as intended. i imagine this would also be great for hema enthusiasts as most of the enemies are wearing armor and using weapons they typically study.
lastly, a fun melee combat game is blade and sorcery. the actual fighting doesnt feel as good as swordsman imo, but the overall combat is very satisfying. its a fantasy setting with magic, you can grab people and throw them around, jump like a superhero and really interact with the world around you (you can use the hooked head of an axe to slide down a zipline, climb things, swing from chandeliers etc). might not be the best for training actual techniques, but its a fun way to let off steam and still get your heart going.
i havnt trained in a few years, but playing these games feels great to me. i would say that standing there in swordsman, defending against the seemingly random attacks coming at you is like 60-75% as good as practicing the 12 basic (fma) strikes coming at random from a real partner. the key to trying to get actual training out of vr is to just play along. its not as good as real training, but there are things that carry over (distance in vr is spot on, for example, and managing multiple attackers with footwork/positioning, the attack animations were likely motion captured from real people, so you can learn to read them a bit etc).

Thanks for doing this video. I've been very fascinated by using VR for training since I went to Vegas this past April. I did a "VR Ride" there and it was horror themed so I was being attacked by a zombie nurse with a scissors...it could happen LOL. But even though it wasn't my intention I just reacted with my FMA empty hand vs knife defense skills and thought WOW!!! This would be GREAT for Martial Arts training. I am definitely going to look into this now thanks to your video. Cheers,

Cool, yeah I really like mine. I need to use it a bit more. Got a little to busy but I'll check out a couple zombie ones.
