My husband called while I was watching your video and I hit pause right when you zoomed on on the cake w/cream while knitting. I ended up salivating over that cake for 20 minutes while he talked about boring work stuff. I've never wanted a piece of cake so much in my life... Thanks for the videos!
Hello, so nice that you speak Dutch ! ‘Met verve’ is an expression for doing something with passion. And here it is used as a playful reference to verf, that means paint. 😀
Oh, we stayed half a block from Winkel when we were there in 2017. Sooooo delicious.
Hi Rebecca, I was in Stephen and Penelope in September and it was one of the staff who told me about you & your podcast, which I love. Great episode ❤
Thank you for taking us on a tour of Amsterdam yarn shops ❤️
So fun to see you walk around my hometown and visit the local yarn stores! The "wol met verve" is a bit of a play on words, "met verve" means with passion or enthusiasm but does also refer to paint/dye and dyeing, so you weren't wrong! Hope you had a great trip:)
Yes, it's difficult to understand that word-play if you aren't Dutch (or even if you are, because 'met verve' is not common language).
Coming back to this episode once again, as I will be in Amsterdam in 2 weeks time !! Didn't have the trip planned 4 months ago, so thanks again for sharing your yarn store finds.
Thank you for taking us along on your Amsterdam yarn shop journey. I hope to visit with family in the near future. Love all your purchases.
Whaaaaat hii that's so cool you're near where I live!
The breakfast choice looked scrumptious! Fun tour, seeing Amsterdam and the yarn shops. Stephen & Penelope shop was a treat to see from afar. When I go to the LYS, I always think I would like to just have a bed of yarn 🤣. Just fluff it all up and fall into it!
Thanks for recording while you were traveling. Loved it
That mohair by Canard looks *devine*. The moment you showed it off I thought cozy shawl-- like wrapping in the snuggliest blanket.
Fan-girling! Is that what it’s called? I felt that way when I was in London and visited Beautiful Knitters and Loop because YOU had been there!
Hello Rebecca, So happy to meet you and get a peek at your knitting journey. I found your previous episode yesterday and also started back at Number 1. Really enjoy your pleasant maner and explaination of your lovely projects. It is great to me that you talk about cost comparison of making things with different yarns; i'm a budget minded knitter. This Amsterdam yarn shop tour was amazing; probobly the closest I'll ever get to going there.(Living in the US) Sthephen and Pennelopie was such a lovely shop; it would be a dream to visit there. Happy Knitting until next time, Lori
Thanks for a great podcast. I love your yarn shop crawls. I visited Amsterdam this summer and my visit to Stephen and Penelope was a real highlight. As everyone says, the staff were super friendly and helpful. I bought Westknits Bicycle and Glowhair in the Dutch Sky colour way to make an Oslo mohair edition hat which I've finished and it's gorgeously warm and squishy. I had plenty of yarn left and have started a Cargill cowl. It's a really enjoyable knit! All I need now is for the weather to get cold enough so I can justify wearing them both together!!
Such a fun tour. I love seeing other shops and this removes the acquisition danger. Thanks 😂
Hi Rebecca, I liked your Amsterdam tour. I was born and raised in Amsterdam and live nearby now. Never visited Hooks and Yarn. Will do that very soon! Groeten. Mia
That Canard yarn screams Sprouted Shawl by Jacqueline Cieslak to me!! 😍😍
Oh my Word you brought back memories of Amsterdam and I felt tears welling up in my Eyes. Thank you so much for the footage of the shops especially Steven West's amazing shop. I was bored this evening and when I saw the title of the podcast I cheered up immensely.
Ps I have one skein of yarn in the grey that you bought at the first shop
But it was dyed in South Africa
I LOVED this episode……it’s my dream to go to Amsterdam some day and hit all the yarn shops. Thanks for giving this dreamer a sneak peak,
Im a bit late to the show, thanks for the trip to the yarn shops, what a huge appeltaart met slagroom! I bet that was the best breakfast! I visited some of Utrechts yarn shops in September, next time in Holland I might plan a day in Amsterdam! Doei doei
Thanks for taking us with you to these lovely yarn shops in Amsterdam!! was a real joy :D
Wow, Rebecca!
Amsterdam!! Yay One of my favorite cities!! I'm half Dutch- my mom was born in Rotterdam and miss The Netherlands so much! What a grand idea to tour with you - love your glasses compliments your hair color and style. Dank u vel, Rebecca!
Thanks for sharing Amsterdam with us and of course all the yarn!!! Great purchases! ❤
I loved yarn shopping with you Rebecca - thanks so much for sharing your day in Amsterdam!
I’m not a Westknits shawl person, but it would be so cool to see them all in one place. They truly are works of art.
Me too, but could do one in tones of grey x
The colour combinations Stephen chooses are not mine. But you can always make your own combination.
So nice seeing “my” city through your eyes. And you bought yarn from Sylvia (wol met verve) she has great yarn and lovely colors. Your mohair yarn looks amazing, I want it ( but not need 😂) so I have to go to hooks and yarn 😜.
Thank you for taking us with you. Amsterdam really is beautiful ❤🤩! I love your vlogs and your fun personality. 😊 I look forward to all your vlogs and hearing all about the great things you are making. 🤗
Always love these yarn shop tours/days out. Thanks for sharing. The mohair/merino blend looks sooooo lovely. Looking forward to seeing all the things you make.
Love to see you going around Amsterdam! I've never been to those yarn shops, even though I live in Rotterdam... Maybe I should go, because all the good yarn shops are gone here. The Wol met Verve skein is beautiful!
Love the mini tour and was lucky to have visited all 3 stores this summer, I know everyone talks Stephen &Penelope but over the years I have been visiting it has become very expensive and we can get similar in Uk, however loved the other 2 and a Christel Seyfarth kit came home with me after spending time in De Afstap . Dutch apple pie mix also weighed the luggage down as it is a total Hit with family and friends 🍏🍎🥮
Love the tour. I am from Louisiana and I had to giggle. Nice on the "Buhda" description of the mohair yarn! You sounded like a "southern girl". Love the vlog! Thanks♥️
Love that!
Wol met verve is wool with dye. You make me want to visit those yarn shops. I actually live quite close to Amsterdam, but going to such a big city intimidates me. Maybe this year I'll bicycle that way 😊
I love Wol Met Verve yarn! My LYS here in NYC stocks their sock yarn base, which I love ❤️ Loved seeing all the yarn stores in Amsterdam!!
Doing something ‘met verve’ means you’re good at it, are bold and courageous, even add a bit of sass to it. Also a reference to paint/dyeing.
Dankjewel
Watching this with captions in bed as hubby sleeps and it said "Welcome to the Caribbean podcast" 😂 silly captions! 🧶 Thank you for showing us bits of Amsterdam, I've not yet been but it looks so beautiful 😍. My father is from Holland so I do want to go!
The captions are definitely doing me dirty, I can't imagine they're very true to form
Nice to see you go to shops in Amsterdam. Hooks and yarn is where I sometimes went. I bought yak wool for gloves without fingers for my husband. It so warm.
This video's made my heart oh so happy. ❤️ I was in Amsterdam for just a few days back in July and Steven&Penelope's was one of my many highlights on my short stay. I left my heart alongside the Kaizersgracht.
I love these kinds of videos! I think you might have helped me decide that I also want to do a knitting podcast and film youtube videos again - will sit down tomorrow and get on with it. been dreaming about it for such a long time and now it's time to finally do it! :)
I've been to Stephen and Penelope's a few times on trips to the Netherlands. Love it! Also met Sylvia of Wol met Verve at Breidagen (which is a twice-yearly Dutch knitting festival--well worth attending) a few years ago and she is a charming and interesting person to meet.
ahhhh loved this video and getting to watch you knit while enjoying tea!! It is always awesome to see other people knit :)
Rebecca what a fun time you had! Wow! I think in general your prices are much better than in the US. ! Thanks for taking the time to share this trip with us! I did manage a trip to Rhinebeck this year and that was my knitting dream come true! ClaudiaSJI
Loved this video! Came at the right time for me as I’m heading to Amsterdam and the yarn shops next week! ❤
Thanks for taking us for the tour! This was an inexpensive one for the viewers. 😅
Hi Rebecca, thanks soo much for the wool shops tour in Amsterdam. I've never been there. Loving your 'real' podcasts. Much love from Shetland xxx
I like that you do more affordable options 😊
Thank you for sharing the tour! Great yarn purchases! 🐑❤️🐑❤️🐑
Just found you this morning and I want to thank you for such a welcoming, cozy and relaxing podcast. After watching a few episodes you're already a favorite 😍
Thanks for taking us along on your journey! Loved the shops and your purchases! I’m exactly the same, I see it I love it, I take it home and dream about what I can make with it😂
Everytime I go to Amsterdam with my mom(I'm from the Noord Brabant province, so not so often), we stop by de Afstap and Stephen& Penelope. I especially love the marie wallin british breeds (working on the chestnut cardigan atm), it just smells deliciously of sheep 🙃
I LOVE the Verve yarn! Goodness! I am seeing a gorgeous rustic Hap in this yarn!
…So I went to their website and this is what they say about their name: “Wool with Verve?
What does that actually mean? Searching for a name for the brand and the webshop we came to this wordplay. With 'verve' we refer to 'verven' or 'verf' which means 'dyeing' and 'dye. In Dutch, verve also means enthusiasm, spirit or energy.”
Love the side trip into trivia. ❤
Loved this little yarn shop tour. I'll be moving back to the Netherlands next year and this is making me excited to go yarn shopping.
I had to laugh about the wol met verve. I am Dutch and I thought it was someone's name. I have never used that word or heard it haha. So, totally understandable that you didn't either!
Thank you for this. Much enjoyed. Verve is also an English word with the same meaning
Such a fun episode! ❤
Wol met verve means something like wool with panache 😂. Loved your little yarncrawl! Oh and now you’ve looked up the ‘verve’ and I got it right 😅
where did you live during the three years you were in the Netherlands, I'm curious about it. (if you want to share it of course 😉)
Groetjes
Doei
😘🌷
Thanks SO much for this one Rebecca, it couldn’t have come at a better time for me as I have just last week been to the Glasgow school of yarn. I missed out on all the yarn stores in Edinburgh as I was there on Monday and sadly they were all closed.😢 but I am heading to Amsterdam next week 🎉
Great shop tour, thanks for taking us with you. That Wol Met Verve colour is beautiful. The grey object that you were knitting, is that your Kinross 4Ply? Thanks for the introduction to Wee County Yarns, on your recommendation I've just got a skein for swatching, so far it's lovely.
Thank you. I live in the Netherlands, but in the eastern part. To Amsterdam that's almost 3 hours train ride. But I want to go visit Stephen and Penelope (buy Stephen's new book and some yarn). Now I know some more yarn stores I can visit there too. I hope I can do that in a few hours time.
Lovely yarn shop tour, glad to hear you had a goed time. Could you please say the name of the Scheepjes yarn company on your next video to help clear up some confusion. I studied in Rotterdam for 6 months back in 1997, so my memory of Dutch is very scant.
No worries on the word 'verve'! That's definitely not a word that used much and I wouldn't ever use in it a sentence (or honestly be able to give a good description of the meaning).
I really need to make time for a yarn shop day in Amsterdam during my Christmas break! All the shops looked so lovely.
Your Dutch is great, verf is dye and Sylvia made a fun play on that word. Verve is a word that is not commonly used, it’s a bit of an ancient word ahha. Hope to see you in Edinburgh at the SYF or as you called it es wai eff 🤣
By the way, Busy Knitter is another good podcaster to listen to.
Thank you Rebecca
My new penchant is 100% mohair or wool/mohair blends they're so luscious 😍
Hi Rebecca, Verve is also an English word and has the same meaning as in Dutch.
Highly recommend using a more water resistent yarn for a shawl, mohair is perfekt ans super strong but nylon holds water and a wet shawl isn't the nicest, I learnt the hard way that anything superwash or water attracting wont work for accessories here, very rainy Gothenburg.
'Verve' is the kind of word we Dutch don't use every day either, so it might be you never even heard it. It is a bit old fashioned.
Verve = passion. It’s hard to translate to English 😊
Ohhh bedankt!!
@@the.creabea but it is definitely meant as a wordplay on verf, since it is hand dyed yarn. So you were not wrong at all to link it to verf :)
