Status Quo was very popular at the time and was the perfect choice to start the event. This was the very first song they kick-started the entire Live Aid event with. In front of, not only the huge crowd but also about 400 million viewers world wide.
Thom Magnusson Those were the days when there was artist and fans and everybody didn’t have an opinion either liked it or you didn’t and then you carried on🤟🤟✌️🎸🎼🎟🤗🤟
To get on a crew list that day was harder than getting a Cup Final Ticket ,so many volunteered to work for free to get this done , the worst part was seeing thet BBC news report that kick started it all , the best bit was Bob geldof face to face with the Somalian Prime Minister for a photo shoot ,shook his hand pulled him close & said " Youre a C***" , always love Bob for that !
All of you need to see John Fogerty perform this song with his band. John wrote this great rock' n' roll song. It is on one of his later records decades after leaving Credence Clearwater Revival his first band. They were huge in the late 60s. Everyone knows their big hit "Proud Mary."
I was there and bought a ticket primarily to see Quo as they were one of my all time favourite bands...their first gig since what was meant to be their last show the year before (I was there too). It was a magical day and still remains my favourite gig. Quo still tour and we saw them last year in London with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Still great, still rocking...and I hope John Fogerty received all the credit due for writing such a perfect opening song for such a global event.
This takes me back. Thousands of us slept on the concrete outside Wembley to get a good spot when the gates opened. Next to no sleep, anticipation rising, then Quo came on and when the first piano bars were played it was almost like the excitement exploded. Great start to and unforgettable 10 hours.
Won't ever forget this day. Was 18, almost 19, woke up early to watch the start on MTV, back when they played actual music, and actually felt like we could change the world through music and love.
So. They hadn’t played together for a year at this point. It was 12pm midday. They were first act of the day kicking off the biggest televised event of its kind in history... and they did that. Had the crowd bouncing in about 2.4 seconds. I have much respect.
You should do more by them - so, so many stonking great thumpers! I remember watching the LiveAid live on TV and thinking "yep, the Quo's still got it" - they were a fairly old band by this stage (started in the late 60s). Growing up in the 70s they were one of my absolute favourite bands (Quo, Slade, Queen & Smokie, and a few Aussie bands like AC/DC, TMG, Hush & Skyhooks).
Hush used to practice at our High School (Cannington W.A). It used to cost us 50 cents to watch them rehearse during lunch break. (When their amps worked that is) So... Kudos for mentioning them and Skyhooks. Not often do we see them commented on. (And TMG, JPY, LRB & Stevie Wright)
Status Quo is one of the biggest bands in Britain. Unfortunately, they never seemed to catch on in North America to nearly the same extent. More hits in England than the Beatles and Stones combined. Sadly, two of the members in this clip have passed on....Rick Parfitt (pink shirt) and Alan Lancaster on bass. They still continue touring with replacement musicians. The lead guitarist, Francis Rossi with the green guitar, is now 72 years old and still in excellent health. They have many live dates lined up for 2022.
This is what an audience that enjoys and celebrates a concert looks like instead of watching it on the display of a smartphone. Not everything was better at that time, but concerts definitely were.
I remember that day clearly, watching it on tv. I was 17 years old. I remember the people rushing in to see who could get to the front. I also remember the Quo starting the concert, they were perfect to get things going. I remember Phil Collins performing at the concert then jumping on a plane to get to the US concert where he performed too. An unforgettable day with so many big names. Fantastic. I'm proud to say I was around to witness it, even if it was just via tv.
Respect from the UK!!!!!!!.......... probably our best live collaboration of bands ever!............ unfortunately those days of the music meaning more have gone
They had a huge career in the UK where they were from. Dozens of hits over decades. In the USA they only had one hit, their first single, "Pictures of Matchstick Men" in 1967.
1985 I was doing discos, I had a mobile disco show playing 60;s and 70's music in the late 80's. Before this I could play one or two Status Quo song Down Down and Caroline. After this on Live Aid I could play Status Quo all night. Saw them as the warm up act for Queen. What a show. Status Quo and Queen all in one night.
I love how everyone scoffed at the idea of this band opening such a big charity event. This was the first song of MANY that day. Queens performance being most notable. But a "cartoon" band like this smashed it right out the park
I watched the whole concert when this aired. So many awesome bands and artists that day. Check out U2. Their performance of Bad is what got them attention.
When you talk about pressure, consider the wider audience. This concert was broadcast live around the world via satellite. What did they estimate? One out of every three television sets on the planet was tuned in, to watch this event.
oooohhhh yeeeaaahh!!! what an amazing gig that was... absolutely loved it then even though I was only 13 lol and watching now brings back so many memroies and so many amazing bands... What fun seeing you react to this for the first time, hello :o) subbed, wish you well and away to watch some more ...much love and repsect from Bonnie Scotland xoxox
What everybody forgets is that Status Quo just had finished their “End of the Road” Tour. After 22 years they had they decisief to stop touring. It was Bob Geldof who deceided that Live Aid Europe could only be held, start with Status Quo. The greatest rock band of Europe at that time.
They are so amazing I love them so much. And I love that you like them too because they are brilliant and so in sync with each other. They have put out so many songs over the years and the fact they have been together since 1965 is just incredible. Really miss rick so much. RIP to such a legend. They are just the best. Watch the video of them at Alton Towers 2004. Just so brilliant !! 😍
I was at the Philadelphia show at JFK Stadium. I remember it being really hot that day. Probably over 100 deg. The fire company was there to hose us off like cattle 😀
Not the world's greatest band and never ever pretended to be...no messages. no preaching, no deep and meaningful lyrics - just heads down, arse up, no-nonsense 12 bar blues and rock and roll - and millions around the world absolutely adore them. Even as an Australian I got to see them about 6 or 7 times down here (first time in 1976) and met hundreds of their British fans who literally follow them all over the world when they tour. Never played a show less than 2.5 hours and was a party from start to finish. We always walked out of their shows sweaty, exhausted and our ears rang for days - and we were so happy. Status Quo ARE rock and roll and I love them!
This performance in 1985, Status Quo were finished working together, they had reformed especially for this performance. However on the back of this in 1986 they reformed with new bass player John Rhino Edwards and on drums Jeff Rich, as Francis Rossi wouldn't work with Alan Lancaster (Bass player) anymore.
I love status Quo rip Rick you are sadly missed what a great band and so full a cheer in every song I managed to get there greatest hits on dvd for 50p what a bargain
I am first. Yaaahh! Glad to see you smiling. I remember watching it Live. Didn't like Status Quo but you should watch Queen's part at the concert. Freddie Mercury had the crowd in the palm of his hand.
it was funny i heard an inside thing that the bands where arguing who was going to be last then they asked whos going on first every band not me and status quo didnt bat an eye they stepped up and they went on. at that point the north america seen had heard of them but not caught on to them and they shocked everyone they played such a great set it started in the morning here and i think for status quo they got the much needed recognition on the world stage and its just pure R and R
I use to listen to this band all the time, when I was stationed in Germany and even bought some of their albums. I lost track of them when I returned to the States. They were completely unknown here in the U.S.. This is literally the first time I have heard this band since leaving Europe 40 years ago.
They’re still going although the line up has changed. Live Aid was the last performance with original Bass player Alan Lancaster until a reunion in 2013 and Rick Parfitt sadly died a few years ago. The reunion with the first time the original Status Quo line up in had played together in over 30 yrs. Here’s a link to video of the reunion concert if your interested. ruclips.net/video/QQBgtZv3rlo/видео.html
As a Quo fan since I could walk, this was a milestone, they'd stopped touring the year before (I was at the end of the road final gig at in Milton Keynes) and were in effect defunct this concert sowed the seeds for the comeback although with a different line up as Lancaster was left out(Spud had already left) and this has split the fan base to the present day. Great live band and still going strong.
Quo where so high on cocaine on this day all the other artists on the live aid bill did not believe they could get up on stage and perform. For Quo it was just another normal day at the office. RIP Rick; a true rockstar
Thanks for reacting to Status Quo. Great. Also its worth trying "Whatever You Want", "Down Down" etc. And, out of interest, their "Pictures of Matchstick Men" from their earlier Psychedelic period.
After a short psychedelic phase, Quo were a bit lost and disillusioned. Then they heard The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues” and thought - Yes! - that’s the direction for us. There is a vegetarian Status Quo tribute band called “Status Quorn”. ( true, not a joke)
If you really want to react to a performance from Live Aid in 1985, and I apologise if you have already done this but you should really listen to Queen's whole 20 minute performance if not then certainly that version of Radio Gaga - absolutely faultless by Freddie Mercury and the crew.
Status Quo was very popular at the time and was the perfect choice to start the event. This was the very first song they kick-started the entire Live Aid event with. In front of, not only the huge crowd but also about 400 million viewers world wide.

I always wonder if her second time viewing she had a tear in her eye..brits are stereotypal bad lovers, no passion...live and learn
This band were truly unbelievable back in the 70's 🤘
@Nick McAvelly yeah, i think there's also Don't waste my Time from the same show, at the Marquee in London.
One of my all-time favorite bands. A huge shame that they weren't bigger here in the states. The same could be said with another UK band Slade.
a bit strange they werent bigger in the US really, given how painfully boring their music is
@@GroovingPict not more painful than your stupid statements

The Frantic Four.
RIP RICK.
Oh I remember that day. I was 16 and glued to the TV all day watching it.
I was the same as you,my friend.
@@IanMcgrath-wn7fd annoyingly my cousins were at live aid but my uncle didn't think I'd want to go.
Me to.
I was 16 too!
I was 11 and did exactly the same
This was the perfect song to open Live Aid, I watched Live Aid from start to finish.
Status Quo are a British institution, there are lots of great songs in their catalogue. Great reaction to the opening of Live Aid.
The knew how to give a party
The perfect band and song to start the concert with, I watched it live on tv at the time.

Say what you want about Status Quo, but they knew how to cheer a crowd. Their performance at the Knebworth 1990 festival is also fantastic.

No nonsense, head down, mindless boogie........ And that a great compliment. Stunning at live shows in the 70s.
Amazing. Ten seconds in and her head is bobbing to the mighty Quo. Why so many of us have followed them for sooooo long. Great post.
What a fantastic day back in '85. Quo were a brilliant band here in the UK. God rest dear Rick Parfitt's soul, taken way too early (red shirt).
