being generally handy & working in the landscaping industry the last 10 years my pocket knife has been EDC. I tend to clean my nails with said knife cuz dirt… got a few confused looks while on the phone sharpening said knife just to shave off the hangnail bugging me all day. A decent sharp knife is useful for anyone regardless of occupation

Echo is 100% right that relationships often aren't conducive to one person bettering themselves. If the other person doesn't think they can, or just straight up won't, then they will try and drag the other person back down a lot of the time. Due to insecurity, jealousy, comfort all these things are true. The truth is though, if someone genuinely heart of hearts loves you, they will be stoked to see you succeed and they will likely try and imrpove with you, so you can both be happier.

As someone with a background in Psychology, I can definitely say that both of you are absolutely NAILING IT when it comes to relationship, parenting, and general self-improvement advise. I can't say enough about how inspiring it is to see the deep level of intellectual and rational discussions you two have. It really is a joy to listen to! A lot of my liberal friends are probably hesitant to watch ya'all's videos when they see how mean and huge you two look, but I keep telling them that you two are really worth listening to and that you guys got some serious brains and high-level intellectual skills backing up all the martial skills and physical prowess.

A lot of people despise working out and if they see me/others always doing that it gets under their skin. They can’t see it is a commitment to growth(improving endurance, mental capacities, consistently putting the time in to reach goals etc.) They just basically want to make others feel small when they feel urked by seeing others working out.

As someone who has been (and no longer) in an abusive long-term relationship, it's devastating to want to pursue your passion and grow as a person and your partner actively tells you "it's a waste of time" and "you're going to fail" and "your place is at home with the kids." I now use that stuff as fuel for the fire to keep me going. But it does happen, and I believe it happens more than we think.
Jocko would be an outstanding psychology professor at a university. If I had a professor like him, I would have considered going to his lectures as time and tuition money well spent.

With more "controlling women", you will find they regret the success if it comes at the cost of the direction they had envisioned. Seen it among my friends. They willingly sabotage their partner just for the "told you so".
This is great! It's where Jocko breaks it down from the stark over-view of massive ownership and military background and all the up front and direct assault talk... or tones... To point out that "being more direct" than you already are is better done in small doses. It's not a true test of vision to find a bleeding elephant in snow... SO when you started from a place of lazy and easily talked over, constantly afraid to say anything of substance... a small step forward is all you need to be more assertive and direct than you began. Direct (btw) does NOT indicate anywhere about being a "wang rod"... Being a wang rod is being a wang rod, and there's nothing productive to get out of it. It's not helpful and certainly not necessary... We all need to grow and change. That's a fact of life. It comes with a certain baggage of getting more self assured, assertive, and wasting less time (even in casual conversation) with beating around the bushes or avoiding an issue. BUT that self growth and change ALSO must include learning to CULTIVATE change and growth in others... instead of stifling them and trying to impress upon the world around you with a shear force of will. That's not "getting after it". That's just smashing it to sh*t... and you'll end up with nothing, same as before you started. While we're on the matter, it's worth pointing out that self examination in pretty much every avenue is the more productive angle to take most of the time... We can change ourselves. It's not hard... and we are the only ones who CAN do that. Nobody else can change you from who you are, and for the record, you have ZERO (or a little less) chance of changing me from who I am... period. At the same time, part of who we are also includes the relationships we carry (or drag along with us)... How we engage in those relationships, from romance to friends/associates to employers/employees, to customers... is a functional part of who we are. It's going to have to be examined to understand how those dynamics may have to change as we grow. It's worth saying... because at the baser nature, competitive humans (and we're more competitive than we like to admit) consider anyone who grows around us, a competitive threat... It's really as simple as that. Even spouses can easily slip into this mindset, because at it's basest nature, part of that relationship is as much about how you reflect on your spouse as how your spouse reflects upon you. {like you really wonder why someone is ever called a "trophy" or a "catch"} It doesn't have to doom a relationship, simply that you're on a growth path, and the dynamic is going to change a little bit. Like Jocko said, if you're on the right path and doing it well, she should be stoked... The change should be a good thing. AND no, it's not a disaster if the first reaction isn't exactly "stoked"... It's a time to cultivate a little into that relationship (provided you feel it's important... which you should). Forgive yourself. Damn... You're only human. If you're working on yourself to be a better human, you've recognized already that you're flawed... F***! We're all flawed... I'm a trainwreck... I doubt I know a single person who isn't some fashion of trainwreck (if we're being honest here)... Forgive yourself... but learn from it. It's a pitfall... and you adapt, revise as needed, improvise the solution and overcome. I like the football analogy, and I'm rarely a fan of those... but that works. However, I can directly tell you when your casserole "could use a tad more garlic... I think... but it's still good." It's especially easy to say it directly in so many syllables when I know you/have known you... What's not productive is "This casserole sucks."... even if it only sucks a little bit, the comment does NOTHING but defame the poor cook's character for making the thing. There's no incidentals, no chance at improvement, not even an identifier of what's afflicting this casserole or my tastebuds... AND what if the entire rest of the table tastes PLENTY of garlic??? Well... I've identified quite simply that I"m probably either suffering hay-fever or coming down with a cold... simple, direct, functional... nobody needs insulted. What if there's been tons of the damn garlic already put in it??? Then our supply of garlic is probably "going off"... and should be replaced. That's likely on me, because I usually (in my house) do the shopping for that sort of thing... regardless of who's actually making the casserole... SO there's a big difference between getting more direct, a sense of avoiding the pitfall of "beating around the bush" too much, and just being a wang rod. Don't be a wang rod... It's not hard, and there's no excuse. ;o)

It doesn't have to doom a relationship, simply that you're on a growth path, and the dynamic is going to change a little bit. Like Jocko said, if you're on the right path and doing it well, she should be stoked... The change should be a good thing.
AND no, it's not a disaster if the first reaction isn't exactly "stoked"... It's a time to cultivate a little into that relationship (provided you feel it's important... which you should).
Forgive yourself. Damn... You're only human. If you're working on yourself to be a better human, you've recognized already that you're flawed... F***! We're all flawed... I'm a trainwreck... I doubt I know a single person who isn't some fashion of trainwreck (if we're being honest here)... Forgive yourself... but learn from it. It's a pitfall... and you adapt, revise as needed, improvise the solution and overcome.
I like the football analogy, and I'm rarely a fan of those... but that works.
However, I can directly tell you when your casserole "could use a tad more garlic... I think... but it's still good." It's especially easy to say it directly in so many syllables when I know you/have known you... What's not productive is "This casserole sucks."... even if it only sucks a little bit, the comment does NOTHING but defame the poor cook's character for making the thing. There's no incidentals, no chance at improvement, not even an identifier of what's afflicting this casserole or my tastebuds...
AND what if the entire rest of the table tastes PLENTY of garlic???
Well... I've identified quite simply that I"m probably either suffering hay-fever or coming down with a cold... simple, direct, functional... nobody needs insulted.
What if there's been tons of the damn garlic already put in it??? Then our supply of garlic is probably "going off"... and should be replaced. That's likely on me, because I usually (in my house) do the shopping for that sort of thing... regardless of who's actually making the casserole...
SO there's a big difference between getting more direct, a sense of avoiding the pitfall of "beating around the bush" too much, and just being a wang rod. Don't be a wang rod... It's not hard, and there's no excuse. ;o)
