    Most dash camera companies will only offer a CPL filter for the front cameras in their dash camera products. The three dash cameras used in this video only have front CPL filters available.

    Fantastic video and very informative. I've had the A229 Duo for a couple weeks now and felt like it really needed the CPL to help cut down on reflections and improve the overall video detail. I just ordered one from Amazon and look forward to seeing the difference in person.

    Overall which camera do you like better between the T130 and A229?

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  2 года назад +2

      I really like the idea of having QHD front and rear cameras, so the A229 Duo is great for that alone. My A229 Duo's rear camera does seem to have a "soft" focus problem which may be limited to just my sample unit. If you don't need the interior video from a T130, then I would think the A229 Duo would be a good choice.

    Hello nice to meet you, my name is Chuck.
    After seeing your test drive footage, I think I’m just down the road from you. Lol
    I’ve got a question about Viofo Hardwire Kits;
    I’ve been using Viofo dash cams for the past 3 years, but I have never used, or needed the hardwire kit for parking mode. For my application, I just leave it in regular recording mode. I would like to do some testing with a hardwire kit.
    Should I connect the hardwire kit USB power connection to the GPS mount, or the camera body, and does it matter?
    -Chuck

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  2 года назад +2

      If the GPS module has a power connection port, I usually connect the power to that location. That way I can remove the dash cam with one less thing to disconnect from it if I need to remove it. The A229 Duo with its new 5-Pin connection to the GPS logger module, will power down the GPS module when the A229 is powered down and the HK4 is connected to the GPS module.

    I have 50% tint on my front windshield, do you know if the manufacturer (or dashcam community) recommends *against* using a CPL filter in this case? I know that for night-time driving it makes light more difficult for the camera to see.
    Reason I ask is because I see a weird rainbow effect towards the top left every time it's on and it disappears once removed. I made sure the dots aligned to each other when installing the filter too, so I didn't attempt spinning the circular filter to a different position.
    In your experience, do you think I may have received a defective filter or could the tint in conjunction with the filter be causing this effect?
    The answer to this question would be helpful to other customers who have front tinted windows (presumably, southern states).

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  Год назад +1

      Using a CPL filter when the window glass has a tint installed can greatly reduce the amount of light available for the dash camera. I've found that the round CPL filters may require a slight amount of rotation/adjustment on the front camera lens barrel to get the best filtering. You can place a sheet of blank white paper on the dashboard (just below the position of the dash camera) and shine a flashlight directly on the paper. Using the VIOFO app's "Live View" feature, you can see how much of the white paper's reflection appears in the live view. You can try rotating the CPL filter until the white paper's reflection in the front windshield is the "most reduced" and that's the position for the CPL filter. On my VIOFO T130 dash cam, I had to rotate the CPL filter about 3 to 5mm from the alignment marks to get the "best" CPL filtering. Make sure you press the CPL filter fully onto the front lens barrel. If the CPL is not fully pressed on you may see it appear in the recorded video field of view.

      @@RetroCarGuy530 As always, I appreciate your prompt reply and overall engagement with your audience.
      You presented a great idea with the paper and flashlight trick but the biggest comfort for me was seeing confirmation that you needed to make adjustments regardless of the alignment dots. I will try that before giving up on it.
      I do more night-time driving than day and it's mostly dark rural roads that I drive on, so even if I get the filter situated perfectly for day-time driving, because of the tints, I may just opt to go without altogether (because I'm not willing to take the filter on and off for day vs. night conditions)
      Thank you, sir.

    Was the CPL filter difficult to install? I’ve having the hardest time wrapping it around the front lens

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  4 месяца назад

      It can be somewhat tight to fit on the front lens the first time. It's a friction fit/held CPL so the material inside of the CPL ring needs to slide onto the front lens and hold it.

  • @PurpMcSquirt
    @PurpMcSquirt Год назад

    is it just me or is there more visual grain/noise with the night time CPL? Could be that the camera is increasing ISO to compensate for the darkness from the CPL?

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  Год назад +1

      Using a CPL at night will reduce the amount of light entering the lens, so the camera will increase the ISO to try an compensate for the lower light level.

    How can we get power from the auto dim mirror? It beats running wires all over. Thumbs up.

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  5 дней назад

      The auto dimming mirror power supply will usually be a 12 volt power supply. These dash camera (as do most dash cameras) run on 5V power. It will require a hardwire kit from VIOFO to convert the 12V power to the 5V power the dash camera requires. The mirror power supply will likely not provide constant battery power and switched accessory power to allow the dash camera to fully support parking mode operations.

      @RetroCarGuy530 Thank you. But I don't want it on when parked. Just when driving. Viofo does not supply or have this connector. I had this cam in my MACH E , and a co called DONGAR made the connector. But since Volvo doesn't have a big following for these DONGAR does not make them. They are GREAT connectors. Thank you so much for your reply to me. Cheers

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  2 года назад +2

      I've had an A129 Pro Duo in my wife's car for the past couple of years. It's worked well. The focus of both cameras has remained clear and crisp. The rear camera cable for the A129 Pro Duo is a thicker cable which might be a bit more difficult to route through the car compared to the thinner coaxial cable used by the A229 Duo. The nighttime footage from the A229 Duo at QHD is just a bit brighter than the UHD video from the A129 Pro Duo's front camera.

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  2 года назад +2

      Both are good dash cameras. The A229 Duo has the advantage of being the newer dash camera model so its support life span from VIOFO will likely be longer than the A129 Pro Duo which has been out for a couple of years now. If it's financially feasible to purchase directly from VIOFO's website, you could purchase the A229 Duo that way. I have my affiliate links for VIOFO's website in the video's description section.
