Imagine the fruit garden you could start with all the seeds from the fruit you're trying. I'd buy seeds from you! If that isn't already a thing, it should be. Happy travels. Thanks for another great video!
I occasionally share seeds as a patreon perk , but I'm too busy with fruit hunting and performing to get into the seed biz.
Looks like a very crudely drawn mangosteen.
it does!
@P L shut up!
0:50 It looks like something they would eat in "The Lord of the Rings" because Barbara Remington's cover art for the first Ballantine paperback edition of the trilogy features a tree bearing fruit that looks a lot like engkala...or pink eggplant. I always loved that painting! =)
Hey J! Wondering if you are a "super taster"... I love your ability to verbalize flavors and textures and that you show preparations for some of these crazy fruits. PEACE
I haven't done the test, but I don't think I am
looking forward to the rollinia video. i'm currently growing a tree in my yard
oh nice. you won't be disappointed
I can devour a big bowl of engkalak. It goes well with salt and chilli or adding some soy sauce. Taste a bit like avocado or buttermilk.
BTW I'm from Borneo
omg its a real life pacha berry from pokemon
I had to look that up, but you're right!
Ur the first youtuber to ever respond to a comment for me
sorry for the geekout moment

Oh wow, i live there! First few seconds into this video i was like "wait i recognise these places" and i confirm! It is my hometown.
To me, engkala fruit tastes more like a sweeter avocado ngl. It doesnt really have a sourcream taste. It has seasons so we dont always find these.
We have weirder fruits apart from these engkala fruits, cant really name all of em rn but they are totally rare. We have the dabai, which looks like an olive but black on the outside but yellow on the inside. Idk if it tastes like an olive cuz i havent eaten any olives before. But if you wanna try em out you can come back to Sarawak! Just like some other fruits, the dabai fruit has its own seasons. Usually produce fruits during durian seasons
By the way engkala is pronounce as ungkalla
kinda looks like a giant pink acorn
In Brunei, we call it 'Pengalaban'. It tastes like avocado. My late father once grew it beside the house. We boiled the ripe pink fruit and ate it with a little salt.
Hi Jared, we met in Innisfail in March. This is the first of your videos I've watched, because I've just harvested a bucketful of engkalas. I liked your idea of vegan dairy product parallel. Best wishes. PS since the trees are tall,I cut the tree down to access the fruit.
Your description of the fruit tastes is spot on. We normally eat it with rice.
I wonder if this would be a good one for an avocado toast alternative. It looks like something I would definitely try as such if I ever saw this cute little Smurfy looking fruit.
If I was lactose intolerant I would add these to dishes or something
my biggest struggle with your channel is fighting the urge click the next video.
"ooh whats that, ooh whats that, ooh whats that"
Jared: It's green inside, I don't know how I feel about that.
Also Jared: I prefer avocados xD
You got a thumbs up for your face in the thumbnail alone.
I have been waiting for this review since last time you tried the Dabai because this one looked pretty. If soaking doesn't make any difference I would pefer pink. But whenever you say "It's not a bad taste" in high pitch I am not sure if I want to eat one. LOL
some say it's not edible raw, tasted fine, but who knows...
Jared, your so awesome. You have inspired me to go and try out exotic fruits from places around the country and I'm even collecting seeds to plant. So can you do me a favor and tell me a good website to buy exotic fruit seeds/cuttings?
Ate this just now.
Forgot completely about this video and expected it to taste like a garcinia would have.
Oh how surprised I was when this tastes nothing like it.
the white flesh tastes like a young coconut flesh with slight bit of avocado taste toned down tenfold.
That by itself is not that weird.
the weird thing is more of the aftertaste. It's unpleasant. Indonesian calls this "langu". It's like the aftertaste of a raw carrot, but stronger.
I've eaten a lot of strange tropical fruit, but this one is just plain weird.
"Don't you wanna click on the bunnies? Don't bite me!" 😂
interesting flavor profile haha... buttermilk and avocado!?! Are you going to show rollinia deliciousa biriba? I'm excited to what you might show next week!
Such an odd one. Yep, Rolinia is coming up next.
0:24 Awwwwh!😍😍😍
Awesome! Looks like a mangosteen-radish hybrid, have you had Rainbow Glo Fruit (Flogae Appmea) yet?
Never heard of it, can't seem to find anything with that name either. Have a link you can send?
Jared Rydelek Probably cause I was bullcrapping you. Jk, love your videos.
+FruityRisk Productions ha ha. I'll review that right after I review the moon Melon
Is it okay if I send you a RUclips message?
Sure, go for it
it remind me of a pepper of some kind... but it's structure is like a cherry.
Am I the only one who has a total crush on Jared? Love your personality!
aww shucks
No, I've got a crush on Jared, too.
it extremely rare, but you can find it in part of borneo island, taste like avocado, basically the same family with avocado
I love Buttermilk. They sell it by the carton in Finland.
I’m having dreams about this fruit. I need it!
one of my fav fruit ...so yummy
kalang kala👍👍😍😍enaaaakkk
It may contain saponins which are lightly toxic so you probably shouldn't eat them raw
Ah that's why. I've seen reports saying you can and can't, it being lightly toxic makes sense then. Thanks for sharing.
sir jared comeback to the philippines there are so many weird and exotic fruits you dont try to eat and review...like in my place in southern tagalog region called calabarzon the last letters zon comes frm a word quezon and thats my province...you should check there the other fruits like lipote,dampol-same as small berries, kalumpit, and many other...dont know the english name of those but i think u must see and review! thanks!
Hopefully I'll get a chance to one of these days!
3:09 that dimebag tho
I thought you were going to say it was related to the Mangosteen, it looks verrrrrrry similar.
Yeah it does
And sword swallowing!? I've always wanted to know the secret to that
There is no trick to it. You just need to have years and years of practice, lots of nerve and a very very good teacher.
If you coloured the body blue it would look like a smurf head.
its such a cartoonish looking fruit!
Those grubs in the intro gross me out every time, but the fruit table after makes up for it.
Glad I captured that feeling accurately. Markets in south east asia are disgusting on one table and divine on the next :D
@@WeirdExplorer But them grubs are so yummy! Deep fry them and tastes better than french fries
We actually use lukewarm water not boiling water and usually eaten with rice. Not really a stand alone fruit
This guy just found a real life pokemon berry
you should review blackberry jam fruit (Randia formosa) =)
That's on my top ten must try list :) I haven't seen it yet though
I have an irresistibly powerful urge to spread that on toast.
This is kalangkala fruit in borneo
Is it sweat?
The way to prepare this fruit is by soaking it in hot/warm water until it becomes soft. Dont soak it too long. Dont boil it either or you'll ruin the fruit. Some people enjoy eating it with a bit of salt. Pls do remember that when it comes to South East Asian fruits particularly from Borneo, dont try to compare it with the likes of Apple, Orange, Grapes, Pears, Strawberry, Watermelon etc. If you do that, chances are you'll never going to appreciate the unique taste of SEA fruits.
Most of the current local generations(born from 90's onwards) didnt eat this kind of fruits (Engkalak, Dabai, Embang, Lakum etc) anymore. They're used to fruits from the west and their taste buds already ruined by refined sugar.
theoddfellas yasss dabai is delish!!!!
Have you ever try a fruit call abiu
yes! I reviewed that wayyyy back, ep 3 or 4 I think. It's good, like a sweet jello.
awesome!
I see a cempedak at 0:33
yup!
Buah asli kalimantan, haha rasa mirip alpukad tapi lebih enak ini
I feel like it looks like something you would find in Pikmin :)
You definitely don't look like you enjoy the taste of it!
It would be great to cook with, but on its own was too much. Not bad... just odd. Like eating sour cream with a spoon..
I have seen this cruldely mangosteen
So much I haven’t seen
Maybe spread one on toast??
Im trying to track down some seeds or live plants of this species. I hope someone who can help me sees this comment. ;)
It reminds me of a boil I once had, especially when the squeeze was applied :(
Looks like a pink acorn.
It tastes creamy and rich... a bit like avacado flesh
You have to soak the fruit in warm water for few minutes. The flesh will be soften and then enjoy with a dash of salt. Yummy
When you squeeze it, it looks like a giant pimple. Lol 😝
This kalangkala
Engkala-watdafuqisdat
Dude, you can eat it with soy sauce.
Love ally our videos but I can't listen to this smacking review
