driftcars on ice with rally tires is stupidly fun! and yeah, the grip is really wierd, the oversimplified way trick i found was "just add angle and throttle" (on a car with a proper lock kit) and it pulls itself out of soo much stupid situations.
Buying a first RWD car in winter felt exactly how you felt. The progression from not being able to do a donut to linking slides and getting closer the edges to meeting strangers just like me and doing tandems with them on a ring road around a huge shopping mall complex. I went out every night when it was snowing. Sometimes I was so in the zone that I've spent hours on the same parking lot. It was 2016, we were not bothered by mall security nor police unless. At night everything was closed, nobody lived there, nobody walked the dog there, nobody cared. And nothing was damaged, unless someone messed up a wheel on a curb. However still last winter police cars started showing up and just sat there during some snowy nights. Also the mall security have become way more aggressive to a point if they see you they try to actively block you with their car and tell you to "get the fuck out".
Live in NJ so while we dont get enough frozen lakes, we will get parking lots from time to time and thats where I learned so much of my driving. This experience is on a whole other level and I hope I can make that happen in the future!

for anyone who haven't tried this type of racing its epic. you only need studded winter tires to get going. stud-less gets kina lame after a while. but if you have 200hp+ getting the rally ice tyres are epic and loads of fun :D we do this in norway a lot, as we dont have circuits and trackdays available this is the second best or simular :D

You have to change the tires becouse the studs in the tires break off
If you have to much hp you will go through tires
